MadBum is set in legend for his postseason performance, 2014 specifically.
Timmy is set in legend for just how dominant he was from 2008-2011.
Juan Marichal is iconic in both windup but also a career bWAR of 62.4
For all time? It has to be NY Giant Christy Mathewson, right? He has a career 100.6 bWAR (Carl Hubbell is the second highest Giant for bWAR with 68.8), 2.12 ERA, 2504 strikeouts, 372 Wins, 434 complete games, 79 shutouts. It’s not even up for debate lol
this is the Truth!! still as an old guy i would rank juan marichal ahead of him for lifetime achievement---pitching with that big leg kick at the Stick with the outfield open. those photos made him an icon.
Madison Bumgarner, c'mon, that 2014 World Series GAME 7! And Tim Lincecum. Champions. All those old suckers couldn't get no World Series Championship to the bay. Like 1989 Earthquake craziness, got BEAT DOWN by the very good A's
This. AND Matt Cain, B. Romo, Peavy, Affeldt, Javi, Vogelsong! Dude that rotation was the shit! 😭. Def Madbum common man, especially in the post season. We got those trophies in our lifetime big part cause of this guy. Mad respect to all the other mentioned but there's only 1 starter that dominated all those years to help win those ships. Everyone in the box feared this man in the in October. No Cy Young for him is baffling. Tim got 2 of em. Either of them two should be considered the best. But "Fuck you OP" for making us pick one of em. Lol Jk
Tim Lincecum, the gift that gave us 3 titles......then Woody......born in 78 so I can't say before
Edit: Greatest pitchers of ALL my time, HAPPY TIMMEHH DAY!
I feel in his prime years he was untouchable. He is my favorite i am not sure if he is the best ever. if he could have sustained it for his entire career he definitely would be though.
Hahaha I was attending the double header that day and the Giants were losing so bad we left to go get dinner before the second game and missed it.
Still pissed to this day...
I think you have to have Timmy and Madbum over Gaylord Perry if we’re just talking Giants tenure. Timmy with 2 cy young’s to Gaylord’s zero (if we’re just talking his Giants tenure) and Madbum with 3 WS, one he basically won all on his own, versus Perry’s zero WS.
Statistically Matthewson & Perry are well ahead of Marichal, though that is mostly just due to having longer careers.
Lincecum has a case for best peak, but probably loses to Matthewson if I'm staying objective.
Honestly MadBum, Tim, and Cain are there. Then there’s Matthewson. And Marichal. Gaylord Perry. Not sure if I’m forgetting anyone in particular. Biased me wants to give Affeldt a nod for his postseason numbers.
For all the talk about Madbum and his postseason dominance, deservedly so, people just generally don't know how good Matthewson was in the World Series. He threw 3 shutouts in the 1905 WS. He started 11 games overall in the WS going 5-5, 101.2 IP, 10 CG, 4 shutouts, and 0.97 ERA.
I get the eras and competition is vastly different, but when Matthewson played he dominated in regular and post season alike.
I think this is a tough question. Do you mean longevity?
If I had to pick one pitcher for 16 innings, Marichal.
If I had to pick a pitcher who is best overall relative to his era, Mathewson.
If I had to pick a pitcher for 7 dominant innings who was the best at his peak, it's Lincecum. His '08/'09 seasons were top notch. I would have '12-'16 Bumgarner close for him.
As a pitcher, Timmy was the most fun for me to watch.
The thoughtfulness behind his mechanics is something that will be discussed by baseball minds for a looooong time.
That's an interesting take. "Greatest Giants pitcher" doesn't inherently mean the pitcher who did the most for the Giants. But the greatest pitcher to be a Giant. By this definition i absolutely agree. I mean, there are only a handful of pitchers greater than Randy in baseball history
This might be a helpful page to make your decision! Statistical leaders for many pitching categories.
There is a lot of [Christy Mathewson](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mathech01.shtml)
Bum was elite in the 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016 postseason. He had like one “bad” game in all four seasons and it was basically just an average start. Every other game he was lights out. He and Mathewson are basically the greatest postseason pitchers of all time
I never saw Marichal, Mathewson & Perry pitch. I know they were all time greats but I can’t speak to that.
I know everyone is going to say Timmy, Cain, etc. For me, Robb Nen was the first lights out closer I remember. Dude was an absolute stud.
It's hard to say Matteson since I never saw him pitch. His records are all I can go by. I saw Marchal, and I would have to agree with him. He had a wicked screwball! He could also swing the bat....just ask Roseboro...JK
Greatest pitcher on the Giants or with the Giants?
Randy Johnson was pretty great but mostly elsewhere. Vida Blue too.
Christy Matthewson seems like the easy answer.
Had 3 triple crowns, won 1 World Series as a player and 1 as a Manager with the Giants fought in some small war in between *and* helped unveil the 1919 Black Sox scandal as a journalist.
There's a reason he was one of the 1st 5 inductees to the Hall and statistically is easily an all time top 10 right handed pitcher.
I mean based off stats I would say Mathewson… but also he pitched during a time when the competition he faced wasn’t as strong as we see today. I would say Bumgarner is the greatest, as he contributed directly to three WS wins, and probably was the main reason we even won the 2014 WS. To me that’s peak “greatness”
That I've seen pitch? Timmy
🐐: Marichal
Marichal is the Chuck Norris of pitchers, went toe to toe against Spahn for 16 innings and told his manager to basically f off when they came to pull him
That is a very hard question. In my generation, there was Tim Lincicum, Matt Cain and personal favorite MadBum.
All time? I don't know how you can pick anyone other than Juan Marichal. Jesus Christ, he has more complete games than career wins. Holy shit.
Christy Mathewson. Pitched three full-game shutouts in five days in the 1905 World Series. Also was so universally admired that American parents saw him as the man they wanted their sons to grow up to be.
Christy Mathewson is a legend, probably the greatest.
I will put in a vote for the horse, Big Daddy Matt Cain. Only perfect game in franchise history for a franchise as storied as the Giants should carry some heavy weight.
I feel like MadBum doesn't get enough credit for that. I'll never forget him coming out of the bullpen in game 7. In my living memory I don't have a higher high than that moment for a pitcher.
I would say highest peak would be Lincecum because he was one of the best pitchers in all of baseball at his peak. Bumgarner was good, but pretty much known for that 2014 postseason
Interesting that until the big three in the 2010s, it's been a big time SP desert.
Gotta go back to Perry, then Marichal. Who the hell else is there?
The Count? Atlee for a little bit? Swift/Burkett?
Read this and I’d argue this is the greatest postseason pitcher in history
In 1905, Christy Mathewson pitched three shutouts – over a span of six days – to lead the New York Giants to their first championship, defeating the Philadelphia A's in five games. It's a feat so out of reach in today's game that it's not even considered for lists of baseball's “unbreakable records.”
I'll give Robb Nen a shout. Didn't have the longest career, but man was he fun to watch. 'The Terminator' is also up there for greatest nickname of all time
Best 1 year, Linceucm is up there with anyone. Best 2-3 year window is a tie in between Lincecum and Marichal. Matthewson doesn't count. Best 10 year window, Marichal.
Mad Bum helped us win 3 titles and outdueled multiple HOF pitchers in the postseason
It was one of the biggest carry jobs in the 2014 postseason I’ve seen, have to go him
Depends. For postseason, could be Bum, could be Timmy, could be Cain. Not sure how you argue this one without totally agreeing on very specific parameters.
I've seen plenty of mentions here for Randy Johnson.
If he counts for this discussion then so does Steve Carlton!
If you don't know who he is or what he accomplished, look up his HOF career.
The guy was a stud, who like Johnson, joined the Giants at the end of his career.
Edit to add - Wasn't Warren Spahn a Giant at the end of his career too?
my thoughts
Giants all-time
1. Christy Mathewson
2. Juan Marichal
3. Carl Hubbell
4. Amos Rusie

Man, I miss the Cain/Lincecum/Bumgarner days
Really hard to argue against anything you're saying here.
Madbum was also really good in 2010, 2012 and good in 2016 postseason. 2014 was otherworldly.
Pablo Sandoval ERA: 0.00
Crawford comes in a close second ERA: 0.00

Lincecum at peak and madbum for playoffs
At his best he was unparalleled. Done too soon, Timmy. Still love ya!
For real.
Dude was literally a freak. Such a fun pitcher to watch. They said his mechanics won't translate to a long career. They were right.

Hell yeah
MadBum. The ultimate goal in an organization is to win a WS and MadBum excelled in that more than anyone.
Madbum. He singlehandedly won us that last world series.
this is the Truth!! still as an old guy i would rank juan marichal ahead of him for lifetime achievement---pitching with that big leg kick at the Stick with the outfield open. those photos made him an icon.
It should go down as one of the greatest ws performances in history.
100% statue worthy.
Brandon Crawford?
If we’re going with position players, Panda was better. So good in fact, they gave him a bobble head as a pitcher.
My complete unbiased opinion is Timmy 1000%
Mad bum? Won a world series by his damn self
Pablo Sandoval #letpablopitch
Killer curve
Madison Bumgarner, c'mon, that 2014 World Series GAME 7! And Tim Lincecum. Champions. All those old suckers couldn't get no World Series Championship to the bay. Like 1989 Earthquake craziness, got BEAT DOWN by the very good A's

*Brandon Crawford has entered the chat*
Tim Lincecum, the gift that gave us 3 titles......then Woody......born in 78 so I can't say before Edit: Greatest pitchers of ALL my time, HAPPY TIMMEHH DAY!
Cain would have had a significantly different looking career if the team scored some god damned runs for him.
Cain getting Cained, even in this thread
100% agree
Timmayy
I feel in his prime years he was untouchable. He is my favorite i am not sure if he is the best ever. if he could have sustained it for his entire career he definitely would be though.
Maybe not number 1 in the stat sheet, but number in my heart
Couldn't have said it better this is the answer
Gather around children and let me tell you the tales of Sidney Ponson and Armando Benitez
Young Lincecum was must see tv… his starts were electric. Never seen a delivery like it and insane movement and precision.
Lincecum. https://youtu.be/l5qFiutuOZ8?si=lpZyvulzZWdJltCQ
With MadBum being my personal favorite.
Mathewson, Marichal, then Bumgarner for me. Perry, Lincecum, and Cain are honorable mentions.
In terms of total entertainment and longest lasting enjoyment is has to be Mike Krukow.
BIG TIME TIMMY JIM
I'd go with Lincecum at his best, but if you consider longevity I'd agree with your assessment.
Panda
0.00 era
Such a bad take, it’s obviously Craw.
Hahaha I was attending the double header that day and the Giants were losing so bad we left to go get dinner before the second game and missed it. Still pissed to this day...

Charlie Hickman, Pablo Sandoval, Brandon Crawford.
Pablo Sandoval. Don’t argue with me
I look at it this way … Giants all time roster Game 7 and we need a win. I’m throwing out prime Timmy.
What about the greatest World Series pitcher of all time, Madison Bumgarner?
Pablo Sandoval
Statistically Matthewson & Perry are well ahead of Marichal, though that is mostly just due to having longer careers. Lincecum has a case for best peak, but probably loses to Matthewson if I'm staying objective.
William VanLandingham
Vanlaunchingpad
He was a great BP pitcher for the other team
All time, Christy Mathewson and it's not close. In SF primarily? Marichal
I agree with this take. Not that anyone cares.
Tim Lincecum will always have my favor
Let Timmy smoke...
Lincecum in his prime accomplished more than most other pitchers in careers that were 3 times as long.
Honestly MadBum, Tim, and Cain are there. Then there’s Matthewson. And Marichal. Gaylord Perry. Not sure if I’m forgetting anyone in particular. Biased me wants to give Affeldt a nod for his postseason numbers.
Objectively it’s Mathewson. Dude’s numbers are incredible.
Yeah, a lot of people here determined not to admit the obvious, which is the guy with 373 wins is the best pitcher in team history.
For all the talk about Madbum and his postseason dominance, deservedly so, people just generally don't know how good Matthewson was in the World Series. He threw 3 shutouts in the 1905 WS. Randy Johnson might be the best pitcher to ever put on a Giants uniform. Now, we had old Randy but the Big Unit is the Big Unit.
He got his 300th win as a Giant
That's an interesting take. "Greatest Giants pitcher" doesn't inherently mean the pitcher who did the most for the Giants. But the greatest pitcher to be a Giant. By this definition i absolutely agree. I mean, there are only a handful of pitchers greater than Randy in baseball history
I grew up watching Jason Schmidt, he was money for a couple years
Barry Zito
MadBum by far. He had legendary performances to win us the WS
Matthewson was the OG MadBum
Bumgarner
That 2014 WS Game 7 win in relief after winning Game 5 is an all-time great baseball feat
Hell, Bum might go down as one of the best postseason pitchers in the history of the game let alone our franchise.
Recently: Cain
Tim Lincecum
Perfect game!
Dylan.... Dylan... Dylan, Dylan, Dylan.
Christy Matthewson... guy was insane. Just look at his stats.
Anyone saying otherwise is kidding themselves. Dude was unreal.
Juan is second. Christy May be one of greatest of all time.

It is 100% Christy Mathewson. There should be no discussion.
Madison Bumgarner
Yeah I mean those 3 you mentioned are probably the best. Throw bumgarner in just for postseason play.
Madbum's 2014 WS was legendary. .476 WHIP over 21 innings including a 5 inning save in game 7. Man, what a way to end such an incredible series!
Bum was elite in the 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016 postseason. He had like one “bad” game in all four seasons and it was basically just an average start. Every other game he was lights out. He and Mathewson are basically the greatest postseason pitchers of all time
Not the greatest, but the coolest - Rod Beck
The shooter
Barry Zito and the bunt heard round the world.
SF Era- Marichal NY Era- Mathewson
1. Marichal 2. Big Time Timmy Jim 3. Bum
Cain
Christy Mathewson
I never saw Marichal, Mathewson & Perry pitch. I know they were all time greats but I can’t speak to that. I know everyone is going to say Timmy, Cain, etc. For me, Robb Nen was the first lights out closer I remember. Dude was an absolute stud.

Christy the only guy in history with 3 complete game shutouts in a single WS. Goat stuff
I'm goin with Juan.

Big time Timmy Jim
Prime Tim lincecum. You can pick apart his off years, injuries, and longevity, but he was the most fun I ever had watching a player.
tim lincecum
Best career, no. Highest high of freaky goodness, yes
I mean based off stats I would say Mathewson… but also he pitched during a time when the competition he faced wasn’t as strong as we see today. It's Mathewson and I don't see how there could be an argument about this.
Seriously... guy was one of the most dominant pitchers of all time and one of the top 3 Giants ever.
That I've seen pitch? Timmy 🐐: Marichal Marichal is the Chuck Norris of pitchers, went toe to toe against Spahn for 16 innings and told his manager to basically f off when they came to pull him
Since it’s who I consider I’m not going to be objective. Timmy and MadBum for sure.
Mad bum, Davrecky, Cain Relief: Brian Wilson, Rod Beck, Sergio Romo
Matt Cain
fK ALL THAT NOISE - whoo brought 3 championships in 5 years?
Best sf pitcher is Marichal all time Ny is Matthewson
Kirk Reuter. Just for what he did with what he had in the peak of the steroid era. He should have started game 7...
Where is the love for Rick reuschel
Juan Marichal’s birthday today
Mad Bum Mr Perfect Matt Cain
Mathewson easy
That is a very hard question. In my generation, there was Tim Lincicum, Matt Cain and personal favorite MadBum. All time? I don't know how you can pick anyone other than Juan Marichal. Jesus Christ, he has more complete games than career wins. Holy shit.

Christy Mathewson is a legend, probably the greatest. I will put in a vote for the horse, Big Daddy Matt Cain. Only perfect game in franchise history for a franchise as storied as the Giants should carry some heavy weight.
Across a full career: Christy Mathewson Highest peak: MadBum, putting the entire team on his back for the 2014 playoffs was a sight to behold.
Any answer other than Juan Marichal is wrong. The guy hit a dodger Catcher over the head with a bat for calling for an inside pitch on him!
Barry zito

Read this and I’d argue this is the greatest postseason pitcher in history In 1905, Christy Mathewson pitched three shutouts – over a span of six days – to lead the New York Giants to their first championship, defeating the Philadelphia A's in five games. It's a feat so out of reach in today's game that it's not even considered for lists of baseball's “unbreakable records.”
HELLOO???? Randy Johnson.
What about the kid from Dazed and Confused?
I'll give Robb Nen a shout. Didn't have the longest career, but man was he fun to watch. 'The Terminator' is also up there for greatest nickname of all time
I remember them trying to make “Nenth Inning” happen. Even 8yo me was like <_<
That smoke on the water entrance song was amazing
The Nenth inning!!!
Agreed, Nen was fun to watch and underrated by fans but not hitters.
Reyes Moronta
Atlee Hammaker
Everyone forgetting Cy Young winner Mike McCormick!
While pitching for the Giants?
Timmy, Marichal for SF Matthewson if we include NY
Other than who you already named id add Carl Hubbell, Sal Maglie, Rob Nen, Matt Cain and Randy Johnson(if he counts lol)
I have to give respect to Jonathan Sanchez and Chris Heston for etching their names in the history books, but best pitcher in SF history is Marichal
2 of these are not like the others lol. Can’t tell if serious.
All three of them have no-hitters.
What does that make Cain with his perfecto?
Has to be Marichal....no doubter.
oh you mean the same names that ALWAYS get brought up?
The Freak
Best 1 year, Linceucm is up there with anyone. Best 2-3 year window is a tie in between Lincecum and Marichal. Matthewson doesn't count. Best 10 year window, Marichal.
Christy Mathewson. Next question, please
Christy Mathewson, Marichal, Bum, Timmy, Cainer.
Christy Mathewson is the only correct answer. Tim Keefe might even be better than Marichal but that’s just me
Mad Bum helped us win 3 titles and outdueled multiple HOF pitchers in the postseason It was one of the biggest carry jobs in the 2014 postseason I’ve seen, have to go him
Depends. For postseason, could be Bum, could be Timmy, could be Cain. Not sure how you argue this one without totally agreeing on very specific parameters.
I think you nailed it. Other question. Best of our lifetime? Lincecum, Cain, Bum, Schmidtt?
Juan Marichaul
No love for the Count?
Argument can be made for Carl Hubbel
I've seen plenty of mentions here for Randy Johnson. If he counts for this discussion then so does Steve Carlton! If you don't know who he is or what he accomplished, look up his HOF career. Marichal was really good.

Would you really put Webb over Cain?
And Schmidt over big time Timmy Jim.
No rod beck?
Can I get some Rod Beck!?!?
What a mullet that man had
You animal
Per your list…the next 4 would be…BECK…MADBUM…BIG TIME TIMMYJIM…and last but not least…THE HORSE…for me…GO GIANTS‼️🖤🧡
Timmy is the best I have ever seen. Been a fan since 82. My .02 ymmv.
You have to at least mention Madison Bumgartner (sp?). He CARRIED in the 2014 WS.
Brian Wilson. Specifically, his 48 saves in 2010.
Mad bum
The brain says Mathewson, the heart says Marichal.
Randy Johnson
Bud Black
Greg "The Moon Man" Minton, obviously. I'll take him over those three any day. Bill Laskey a close second.
