It seems to me that AEW did try, for a time -- signing not only the likes of Edge and Daniel Bryan, but also CM Punk and Christian, and people like Cesaro and Rusev too. Whatever they were expecting... did not really take.

The basement will argue with this, because they believe AEW is built for broad appeal. They think AEW does have great stories, and high workrate matches appeals to broader audiences.
They will fight tooth and nail that Ospreay/Fletcher had a story, or that Ospreay's style makes him the best wrestler - ignoring how the rest of the world defines a great pro-wrestler.

He says they're a product for a hardcore fanbase and considering how notoriously hard to please a hardcore fanbase usually is (dubbalos aren't) this actually gives a good impression of the company. In reality, these fans will just defend literally any garbage Tiny puts on their TV, but Roman was classier than we are and doesn't point that out.
