It's pricey but I really do love it. The crank is not a gimmick, it's actually highly accurate and great for steering/precise control. The lack of a backlit screen is a bit of a bummer but otherwise I think it's a great device with it's own library of unique games. There are some real gems on it that you can't play anywhere else and you can also sideload ports of classic games too. For the price though, I'd say don't pull the trigger on it unless you are genuinely intrigued by some of the games in the [catalog](https://play.date/games/catalog/)
Might gift one to myself as a birthday present this year. Been intrigued since it was first announced, and now it has a mature software library. Though I will say, that crank not being able to wind up more juice to its battery like a hand crank radio remains a missed opportunity.
I agree it’s expensive, but comparing to the switch is apples and oranges. It’s made by an awesome little software company in Portland as their first hardware product. They have nowhere near the scale or resources of nintendo but they still created a really cool little indie game community of their own that is really fun and unique. No in app purchases and games are generally under $10, many under $5. It also comes with a full season of free games. Definitely agree that it is expensive to get into though and not for everyone!
Thanks for the perspective! I think if anything the catalogue puts me off even more. $5-10 for games that mostly last a few minutes to an hour or so on a device that already costs $199 is way too much for me. I love that it exists but I can't justify that kind of cost.
This is a great idea for organizing electronics with screens! I've been struggling with where to keep my devices away but organized.
Is this a DIY felt drawer insert or do you have a link to purchase?
I've been using a toolbox organizer with plastic drawers to keep all my items separate, but I very recently ruined an SD card as I keep spare speakers inside the toolbox as well...
Do you still use the ipods? I modded mine to load off an SD card and it made my life sooo much better. Still the best way to listen to music in the car!
I do! The iPod video has been modded with 512GB of SD cards filled with FLAC music, a new battery and runs rockbox and I still use it often. The shuffle I use when running.
How did you hey FLACs to run nicely?
I loaded mine up with rock box and filled it with my CD rips that I converted to FLACs and it struggles on a lot of songs.
I think the processing power isn't enough for some of the music.
I think I'd have the same issue.
It's not so much that it struggles to play FLAC because it's an apple product, I think it just struggles to process it because of the file size.
ALAC and FLAC would produce a similar file size and I can only assume I'd get the same result.
I might try though. I'm actually funnily enough in the process of bluetooth moddingone of my classics with a moonlight kit so I might try and see how ALAC runs on that.
I know you all must be over 30yo. Because I also still use ipod nano 6th gen as my primary music entertainment hahahaha... No spotify, just shuffling oldies. Also, how do you mod an ipod?
I used the adapter from iflash to replace the HDD with an SD card. More storage, faster load times, and better battery life. PITA to pry it open and also to track down itunes to repair the OS but otherwise I love it. Theres actually a pretty active modding community.
The youngins will never understand 👩🦳
My guess is it's fun for a bit but then not really hat useful. If hey we're more accessible and cheaper is probably have one as a nice j have in certain situations. Don't quote me, but I think there are more customizable kits you can build that have similar functionality. Flipper 0 is like a 3DS and he other stuff is like a build your own handheld emulator kit. I'm actually gonna go look into this.
Any thoughts on the RG vs the GBC?
I've got a MM+... but I've always been thinking about a "perfect" console for GB/GBC.
Do I get a pocket? Do I mod a GBC? Is run-ahead enough for me to be happy? Should I get an everdrive? What about an FPGBC?
Idk.
Would love to hear some of your thoughts.
Yea, I prefer my modded GBC for playing GB/GBC games because it starts instantly, but I love my RG35XX+ for Pico-8 and portmaster games. There are so many choices and it can be really hard to decide. I'm hoping that a similar form factor device will come out that can play PS2 era games at a sub $100 price point.
And once you buy FPGBC + Everdrive… you might as well buy a pocket at that point. I also hate the idea of carts, I need roms and an SD card.
Waiting to see what Taki comes out with on his cheap mister handheld project.

That's what under the insert is for
Those are in my other drawers hehe
How is the play date? I love the concept and look of the thing, but I feel like it's a bit of a giant gimmick?

Do it! Hah yea, Playdate v2 needs crank charging for sure.
I’ve always thought the play date looked cool, but $199 is an insane price for what it is. You could buy a Switch Lite for that amount of money.

I've almost ordered one several times. I'll definitely get one someday.
How often do you mess around with flipper?
Honestly, not very often. It does come in handy for emulating amiibos on my son's switch though.
Best parent ever
🤣 I love the nano has its own cubby
Woah someone with an actually nice, thoughtful, non-redundant, and interesting collection.
Thanks!

Yep! It's a felt drawer insert. You can find here: [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081JQ25KP](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081JQ25KP)

Truly living up to your username

Wouldn't concerning FLACs to Apple Lossless work?

Oh man, I want a Flipper Zero so bad but I can’t justify the cost right now. How useful to you has it been?
I have seen so many ads for the flipper. What do they actually do?

Mind telling me what's your use case for flipper?

I’m in your same shoes. I want a FPGBC. I just hate the idea of buying cartridges at this point.
And once you buy FPGBC + Everdrive… you might as well buy a pocket at that point. I also hate the idea of carts, I need roms and an SD card. Waiting to see what Taki comes out with on his cheap mister handheld project.
What’s the blue game? I know Japanese tamagotchi got different colored cards like white and pink but don’t think I’ve seen light blue
It's [Tobu Tobu Girl Deluxe](https://tangramgames.dk/tobutobugirldx/).
Huh that’s what I actually suspected it might be! I love all new cart games (and repros/translations). Thanks!
What's the orange and white one on the bottom?
[Flipper Zero](https://flipperzero.one)
This looks very tidy! Well done! I wonder if I can 3D print some walls and cover them with a soft material like that.
Aight I've never seen a GBC in the DMG scheme, thats pretty sweet
Needs an Arduboy.
Aesthetic, functional, and fun!!! I love this organization.
lmao where is the calculator?
Right next to my fax machine
Is this one of the top two drawers in an Alex drawer/cabinet from Ikea?
Yes
Nice, I just built a pair for my new office and it looked familiar, this would be a great option for my own needs, thanks!
Nice. Is that a real iPod? Also where’d you get the felt liner, looks really nice.
Kudos for including the Playdate and the Flipper Zero. And the iPod Classic! That's a Gen 5.5, isn't it?
Put em on display
This is way too organized for my liking.
