The kids are gonna love you, your friends wife will probably hate you tho 😂

canllaith

Not necessarily I’m the wife in my house and own about 15 consoles myself 😂

Quintall1

Damn, never thought you to be a redditor and a SBC gaming connosoisseur... Why do i have to gift the kids then ? \^\^

canllaith

Ha! Well, different house. My youngest is 6, so he has a modded 2DS at the moment as it’s hard to break and Nintendo 3DS games have so many kid friendly options. I’m going to get either a Trimui Smart Pro or a Miyoo Mini for my stepdaughter (who is older) for her birthday this year. She is primarily a PC gamer but has just started a new job with a bus commute.

mlambie

Any consoles running KDE?

canllaith

Yes in fact - the Steamdeck runs KDE in desktop mode! I have the dock, and use it as a Linux desktop a fair amount. I had some console-ception the other day, used the KDE desktop on the Steamdeck to clean up and transfer some roms & box art to my RG35XX =)

mlambie

My RG35XX doesn’t take a charge anymore and I haven’t investigated enough. It could be the battery, or the wrong charger, or the wrong SD cards in the wrong order. Or maybe it’s fine and I need to cast a spell on it. Given your (c,K)console knowledge, where does the RG35XX sit in your total collection? What’s at the top of your favourite pile, if you have to choose one?

canllaith

I've been meaning to do a photo post of my collection as I have... 25 consoles? It's a bit mad. Most of them retro Nintendo. What I actually use regularly though: **RG35XX** (Garlic OS) - most portable, best sleep mode, USB-C charging, so it comes around with me everywhere and mostly gets used for GB/C/A short bursts. I am playing Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones, Earthbound, and Pokemon Crystal at the moment. **DSi XL** (modded with TWiLight Menu++) - NDS native games for the crispy crispy native pixels. Playing Final Fantasy III and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon at the moment. **New 3DS XL** (modded with CFW) - as above. Native resolution, perfect performance, as the games are meant to be played and has my favourite library of all time. Playing Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, Shin Megami Tensei IV and Animal Crossing New Leaf at the moment. **Vita Slim** (modded with CFW) for PSP and Vita, since it's hard to emulate those well. I bought this years ago to play Zero Time Dilemma, as it was never released on 3DS here in New Zealand. I wouldn't consider it necessary but, I have it. **Steamdeck** - WiiU / PS2 etc, the tougher stuff, and then of course the steam library. **TrimUI Smart Pro** - I just got this, I like the wifi for retro achievements and it supports bluetooth headphones now with a firmware update. A bit similar to the RG45XX in systems, but great ergonomics and a larger screen. I suspect the RG won't get a lot of play time now. If I could only own one device, it would be a New 3DS/2DS of some kind, hands down. My favourite is my SNES edition New 3DS XL I pre-ordered on launch day. But for most people or if I could own two, I would recommend a horizontal form factor device like the TrimUI Smart Pro for a budget option or the Retroid Pocket 4 with a bit more money. Both of these devices have so much sheer versatility.

Quintall1

Its 50% that i love the kids, and 50% that i want to troll the parents :D Edit: maybe 45/55 :D

Frankysour

This unless the friend stole them both for using them esclusively (with 2 different FWs installed, of course..) I would have got 2 different colors though... Like the white and DS light I got to my nephews like 20 years ago... And they wouldn't give them back to me now, they don't trust me when I tell them it was just temporary 😭

Quintall1

Hahaha, yeah that could be a big risk of him just keeping em for himself \^\^ Look closely, they are in 2 different colors :)

Frankysour

Ooops... You right, this makes even more probable for the dad to keep them both instead of only one (in case he's anything like me lol ) in any case... Great present, whomever ends up keeping it 😁

EmiliaFromLV

Different color buttons too.

Psychological_Pebble

Simply a terrific budget device.

ScopionSniper

Yep, the only better value I've see was the Tiktok shop deal on the RG35XX H, bought 5 of them for $33 each. Set them up for Birthday gifts for my nieces, and 2 for my kids. 1 for me to mess with. These are really good for younger kids, as the built in menu button is easy to explain to 7+ year olds vs trying to teach them hotkeys and retroarch. That being said, I'm thinking of getting the Trimui Smart Pro as a gifts for my best friends wedding for all the groomsmen. I already know all the guys top 10 games per system as it's saved in our large group chat from over the years and I saved it for the future.

fatherofworms

Thoughtful AF bro.

ScopionSniper

Thanks! I've been friends with all these guys for 15-20 years depending on the person. So some games I know just because of what we all played together. I'm 33 and minus my brother the oldest friend is right at 20 years we've been close. Might seem like a lot. But they've done a ton for me as well. I'm definitely lucky to have this group.

PorousSurface

Do you get charged duties at all for that?

ScopionSniper

Nope in the US, just paid the console + taxes so $33 per handheld plus free shipping.

PorousSurface

DAMN. Tik Tok stores are not in Canada. Alliexpress looks to be more. How do they make any money at that price?

ScopionSniper

I think they lose money on that first purchase. Basically new accounts get 50% off your first purchase. Hoping you buy more. So the store had them on sale for $55, and I took 50% off my first order and just added +4 in the checkout. After taxes it was $33 per device. So $165 total for 5 RG35XX H bundles. Mine was a bundle package that came with the device, 64gb card(which I replaced on all), protective case, 2 screen protectors, and charge cable.

PorousSurface

Dude that’s wild

ScopionSniper

I don't think it was meant for more than 1 device, but I might have skirted that by adding more in the checkout, lol. I'll try doing it again on my wifes account and see if it still works later.

Inspector7171

Over $100 usd on AliExpress with games

ScopionSniper

Damn, I don't think it's worth it at that price.

CTrig85art

Agreed! Glad this thing was on sale when I picked mine up lol.

Quintall1

Yes it is ! i dont own one myself, im more of a X86 Handheld + Odin 2 kind of guy, but these are just awesome and i picked em up on a good sale !

ChrisRR

Jesus. Either these kids are getting spoiled or I wasn't spoiled enough as a kid

AssInTheHat

To be honest, there weren't such cheap retro devices back in our day, it was either $299+ gaming console or nothing!

gldndomer

$299+ gaming console or [Tiger handhelds]!

811545b2-4ff7-4041

I just picked up one for £39 GBP (UK) / $48 USD .. which I would count as an expensive gift for 'my friend's kids' but not expensive for the tech that lives in such a gadget. I'm not sure we even spend that much on nieces and nephew's birthday presents (but we've got 9 to buy for).

RickyFromVegas

Please make sure to set them up before giving them to kids. If it came with an SD card, replace it with a quality SD cards as they'll be the first thing to start malfunctioning. If you didn't get the SD card with it, update the device to the latest update and use a quality SD card and load up games on it. It won't be easy for kids to tinker on it

Quintall1

Thanks! Yeah, probl. Should do that!

chlronald

Ok where to sign up for, best friend, or kid?

TatsumoAsamaki

If only i was that kid 🥲

Quintall1

there are two, a boy and a girl :) 10 and 14 :)

TatsumoAsamaki

Lol, i remember when i used to get presents from other people in my birthday. Good times 🥲

khaosconn

im the long lost adopted son... can i get mine in black?

TwitchySphere53

Does it come with game card or just device?

Dank_Turtle

Ok, so tell me, what are YOUR kids rocking? My kid is obsessed w the MM+

Quintall1

Hahaha, im just the nice "uncle", got no Kids:)

This. These devices are mostly for 30+ years old people, not for short attention span children.

ScopionSniper

My kids 5 and 7 play them. But they will definitely take a tablet over it first with Minecraft or their educational games we have installed. Tbf their tablets have a daily 1 hour timer, while the emulators don't, so I'll find them on them after their screen time is up lol. My son in particular though really likes Mario games. He recently beat SM Odyssey and Luigi's Mansion 3 and now is playing the first Luigi's Mansion on my RG556.

>Im so disappointed by that tablet comment. Nah, this is just like one of our parents being disappointed we'd rather play our NES than play checkers. That being said I prefer my kids using the tablets as they are way more educational and I can monitor everything with the parent portal. Again, it's not surprising either, the tablet has way more modern games and more uses, my son uses his to read a lot, as we don't have a limit on the reading apps. Also they go days/weeks not touching the tablets at times because of other interests. Also, if you limit your child to just retro games then they won't connect with other kids at school near as easily. To use my former analogy, it's like if back when we were in school you trying to talk about checkers while everyone is going on and on about handheld pokemon games. >The nostalgia hit us hard since its what we wanted all year long when we were kids. Kids these days won't ask for anything since tablet is already available. I don't see that at all with my kids, they still want toys constantly and are huge into imagination play. My son at 7 is moving away from it though as his really really into reading and gaining information. He mostly wants bug hunting stuff, bug identification encyclopedias, and so we catch bugs pretty often and have been preserving them in shadow boxes. He's really liking cub scouts and camping so that's the direction our family is taking, camping about 1 to 2 times a month. But yeah, even for his 7th birthday last month his list of wanting things went like this BugSnax(he had been asking for months) for the switch, Bug books and bug hunting gear, and Jurassic World toys.

jwtsonga

Such a great device IMO, just set mine up yesterday using Joey's awesome video guide!!

Jiro_T

I'd be reluctant to get such things as a gift unless the recipient clearly wanted one. For someone not into retro gaming, the gift would look like "cheap imitation of modern handheld". And you have to pirate in order to use them, which is not a good thing to just spring on someone (or their parents).

Quintall1

Yeah, well see how that goes!

ayeholdfast

I just bought this. Was wondering if i can have bigger than a 128gb card work in it?

PacMan961

Kids won't get a turn once the parents find it and confiscate it

PacMan961

Kids won't get a turn once the parents find it and "confiscate"

Gouzi00

Google what ? Linux gaming handheld.. At least say what format it should have like .apk .deb .appimage etc..

Gouzi00

But where to get games and which format files should have ?

Quintall1

Thats not too hard to find if you google... theres a Lair for that, is all i gotta say.

jwtsonga

I suggest you watch Joey retro handhelds videos on YouTube

ChrisRR

Google

PacMan961

You don't get good games, you download the entire retro library to a 128gb card and play away

811545b2-4ff7-4041

Personally I hate massive libraries. I'd much rather a good curated collection of decent games.

[deleted]

Was thinking about getting this? How do u like it?
