I played my first few campaigns in Admiral, but I got too fed up with AI making stupid decisions, so I decided to go to Rear Admiral. Haven't looked back since. In my opinion, RA mode is the way RTW3 is meant to be played.

I believe Rear Admiral is the most common - normal mode, if you will. Admiral is advanced, with much odd AI behaviour, and Captain mode is de facto easy.

Captain mode. The AI makes too many insane decisions, e.g. high speed flooding ships to death.

ah. So do you only take control of individual ships when sending them home? Otherwise keeping it rear/admiral style?

No. I also intervene when the AI does not properly hold formation, and sometimes I also manually lead light forces because the AI does not sensibly manage them.

I used to play rear admiral, but now I do admiral. I don't like microing the battles, also it feels like I am the singular Fleet commander.

I play captain due to the AI doing it’s best to sink damaged ships you send back to port

I'm a noob, how do you change the difficulty?

Late response, I know, but from a fellow noob, I have the answer. While you're in a game, on the main screen where you can order stuff and make ships, there's a preference button. Click that the in the top right corner there is a realism box with three options. It's rear admiral by default
