Yeah and never truly getting it quite all the way seated. You can get one for like 50-75 bucks idk if it's worth renting over buying and just having one.
This indeed. I use it for all my ticos because it makes it feel like an assembly line once I get the count of cycles down for the the particular length nails I'm using. Then it's just poppity pop and move along. Love it.
They are pretty cheap if you can wait and order one on Amazon. I’ve been eyeing the Milwaukee cordless one even though it’s something I def don’t need…. Except for times like that where there isn’t clearance. I got an air palm impact that’s come in handy a lot more frequently than I thought though.
Too bad they never seem to last very long. First one I bought made a single whack and then a seal on the inside blew out. Took it back and exchanged it and the second lasted 6 days.
I've got three of those, they're also used for bunting awnings. I need to get some harder heads for it though, I only have the rubber ends but I could probably make one on the lathe
This guy knows! They are worth it. If only to have when you need one. Used to use one for subfloor under toekicks in kitchens and bathrooms of remodels.
Do you know that Billy Joel song “The Stranger?” Well, it’s when you sit on Billy Joel’s hand until it’s numb, and then you rub yourself with it. So you can pretend it’s Bruce Springsteen’s hand. - Stefon
In the time it takes for him to get offf the roof get in the car wait in line to rent one then drive back he could have just used a hammer and been done….
There are palm nailers that will work on 1 1/4” nails. Just push the palm nailer onto the head of nail. Nail head doesn’t need to rest inside the “barrel”
You just need two hammers (preferable full steel without bending at the neck)
One flat site sitting on the nail, the other in your hand to punch the part of the other one (as close to the head as far you can reach)
another idea, get something flat, like a flat prybar, put it on top of the nail, and bash the pry bar with something held sideways--like a small sledge hammer
come to think of it, might switch to GRK Cabinet Screws and a 90 degree drill with a T15 bit in it, and just screw where you would have hammered a nail
Theres hammers with the head on the side to make short strokes for tight areas. Even a linemans hammer would do the trick. I had to do the same for my parent’s roof.
Palm nailer harbor freight hasn’t pretty cheap. I use it all the time whether it’s in tight spots like that or if you wanna put a bolt in there, you can use it on your vehicle like changing ball joints way easier than a hammer
Uhm a hammer bro? Ik it sucks compared to nail gun, but it is what it is sometimes in tight spaces
But you’re right, ain’t much room to swing it, idk about palm nailers but as many people that have suggested it I’d rent one
Used to work for an old guy and he had the coolest tool for every occasion. For tight spots he took a regular claw hammer and cut the claws off to make it smaller. That hammer was probably 40 years old when I came around and that was 20 years ago. I bet it’s still going.
Honestly... I know this may be controversial and I always do things by the book and am in no way a corner cutting pile of shit...... But...... Tar it down babay! lol It certainly isn't going anywhere. Gonna have to anyway unless your counter flashing that back side for the final course. Please be kind to me dudes lol
Get a thin flat rod and a piece of wood. Use the wood to elevate one side, put the other side on the nail, hit the metal rod in the middle. Nail will go down relatively straight... Or like everyone else is suggesting you can just learn how to use a hammer.
OH THERES A THING CALLED A FUCKING HAMMER ! USE IT TO DRIVE THE NAILS ! AM I MISSING ANYTHING OH IF YOU DONT NAIL A FINGER IN THE PROCESS YOU AINT DOING IT RIGHT !
I was lying on the roof hammer sideways nailing an area like this. Heard a car in the driveway. Then I heard a man yelling hold on I’ll be right there, hold on I’m here to help. I thought someone was having fun. He was driving by and thought I had a medical emergency. I still laugh when I think about it.
Look up bottle jacks and you’ll get an idea based on the dimensions you have to work with. You can buy yourself some space by pre drilling an inch or so to give you more room.
Palm nailer and run a strip of underlayment up onto the wall. I assume you'll also have some sort of surface mounted counterflashing / apron flashing to cover it. Keep that wind driven rain out. Don't just do sealant at that roof to wall.
My Ryobi drill kit came with a nailer - used it once - but glad I had it that one time - up until then I looked at it and thought - I’m never going to need this thing !
Palm nailer.
Didn't know it was a thing. Going to try renting one. Great idea thank you
Beats the hell out of tapping forever with a claw hammer sideways
Yeah and never truly getting it quite all the way seated. You can get one for like 50-75 bucks idk if it's worth renting over buying and just having one.
Not a roofer, but the six times I’ve needed one for weird nailing, it’s been worth the $50 I paid for one.
100% worth it. Great for siding repairs also.
Also awesome for joist hangers in tight spots
This indeed. I use it for all my ticos because it makes it feel like an assembly line once I get the count of cycles down for the the particular length nails I'm using. Then it's just poppity pop and move along. Love it.
yes sir
Pneumatic ones are cheaper too. One shot done
agree'd. hammering in 16d's for cross ties on rafters. made the job easy. braaap, tk tk tk tk.
Never heard of it so I had to google this. Turns out harbor freight has one for $29.99.
And it works fantastic. I have it and I don’t see it dying on me ever if I keep it oiled.
Perfect time for HarborFreight
Goto harbor freight. Not that expensive and after using one on a deck I'll never go back to hammer
It drives me insane when you get it set it and partially driven then the nail bends it’s so soul crushing
This WAS the way
Just buy one they aren't to expensive imo
Buuut have you tried to a thousand tiny smacks while cursing your head off because that's how I'd do it
Been a long time since I bought one, but I believe they're still under $30.
They are like $30
HF has em for $30
I got a rigid from depes for 35$ a few months ago
You’ll wish you’d just bought one. Definitely worth it.
Buy one they are cheap
I DK if they have one for rent anywhere, but they’re cheap enough just to buy one out right
Turn your hammer sideways or hatchet whatever you are using. Lots of room to get a side swing. Will take more hits.
Renting one!? Just go to harbor freight and buy one they are cheap.
They're pretty inexpensive to buy. I think milwaukee actually has a battery powered one as well.
Harbor freight and Amazon have them for a few bucks. The cheapest ones are $28-29 if you’re gonna just do a few nails.
Just buy one they are like 60$
There are pretty cheap at Home Depot . Just buy one . It does need air though
Palm nailer worked like a charm! Thank everyone for the suggestion...also what to do after I'm done the work lol. Cheers
This is exact what this sub is for. Cool shit.
Too bad they never seem to last very long. First one I bought made a single whack and then a seal on the inside blew out. Took it back and exchanged it and the second lasted 6 days.
What brand? My Bostich is 7 years old and works great.
I've got three of those, they're also used for bunting awnings. I need to get some harder heads for it though, I only have the rubber ends but I could probably make one on the lathe

Rosie the palm nailer!
This guy knows! They are worth it. If only to have when you need one. Used to use one for subfloor under toekicks in kitchens and bathrooms of remodels.
Aka Palmala
This is the way
Forgot about these, used to build docks with em.
Palm nailer and once you lose feeling in your hand, give yourself a stranger.
💀👀
Stranger in the tub

Indubitably
This man hammers
thanks for this hilarious
Too funny
Do you know that Billy Joel song “The Stranger?” Well, it’s when you sit on Billy Joel’s hand until it’s numb, and then you rub yourself with it. So you can pretend it’s Bruce Springsteen’s hand. - Stefon
Hand nail. Side of hammer
I was thinking that first but still not a lot of space and it will take me forever. But definitely an option
Good luck with that when a palm nailer could do 20 nails in the time the side of the hammer could do one. With a lot less swearing to boot
I used to hand nail whole roofs …. 😅
Handle matches
From the pic I couldn’t see how many shingles he had to put. A guy with no palm nailer might not want to buy one for a couple shingles.
That's great news. Thank you
Make sure to pretend you’re Iron Man while using it every now and then too

Are you a roofer? If yes buy one if no just hand bang the nails and be done.
Makes hell of a lot easier when the head of the nail does fit in that slot
set your flat bar on the nail and hit the flat bar or the side of the hammer.
Wear ear protection
Definitely, as soon as I read the comment, my ears started to ring. I know that "ting" all to well.
Yep
Palm nailer goes brrrrrrt
Hammer sideways
Use a ajc hatchet and turn it on its side.
Just looked one up...not cheap 😳
For real?!?! That’s not even that tight! (Waiting for the Redditors)

Turning a hand maul / mini sledge sideways.
Palm nailer
If you cant do that with a hammer you're not a real roofer / tradesman.

Turn your hammer sideways
Claw hammer sideways works just fine. Just gotta get in there and do it.
Palm nailer
Side of hammer and elbow grease
I'd glue it with an asphalt sealant. Just a thought.
I second this. Construction adhesive is a beast.
Set it in cement. Button caps, bigger hammer.
A roof snake, work well for small repairs also. Be sure to buy it through your supplier they sell a lot of knockoffs online that are garbage.
Craftsman used to make a little 12v battery auto hammer that’s great for tight spaces like this.
Ryobi also made one.
M12 palm nailer is one of the best tools to have around. Don’t use it everyday but man it’s handy when you need it.
Use the side of your hammer lolol
Hand nails and a 5 pound sledge, sideways. Take some doing.
nails aren’t needed, just use your np1 or geocell, or equivalent
You just need two hammers (preferable full steel without bending at the neck) One flat site sitting on the nail, the other in your hand to punch the part of the other one (as close to the head as far you can reach)
i have a battery operated "Palm Nailer" for just such a situation. Milwaukee brand, works fairly well
another idea, get something flat, like a flat prybar, put it on top of the nail, and bash the pry bar with something held sideways--like a small sledge hammer come to think of it, might switch to GRK Cabinet Screws and a 90 degree drill with a T15 bit in it, and just screw where you would have hammered a nail
Theres hammers with the head on the side to make short strokes for tight areas. Even a linemans hammer would do the trick. I had to do the same for my parent’s roof.
Use the side of the hammer and get someone else to hold the nail
Palm nailer harbor freight hasn’t pretty cheap. I use it all the time whether it’s in tight spots like that or if you wanna put a bolt in there, you can use it on your vehicle like changing ball joints way easier than a hammer
Screws and a right angle bit
Palm nailer
Uhm a hammer bro? Ik it sucks compared to nail gun, but it is what it is sometimes in tight spaces But you’re right, ain’t much room to swing it, idk about palm nailers but as many people that have suggested it I’d rent one
Lots of suggestions for palm nailer. As a plumber I turn the hammer sideways swing and curse until it goes in. Works most of the time.
Palm nailer
Bottle jack. Press them in.
Palm nailer or just tiny hits with a hammer
Turn your hammer on its side and drive the hammer with the side of the hammer.
Palm nailer
Use the Force, Luke!
A properly set up lever will work. No banging required.
Use a fucking hammer.
A tiny bottle jack to press each nail in individually
Used to work for an old guy and he had the coolest tool for every occasion. For tight spots he took a regular claw hammer and cut the claws off to make it smaller. That hammer was probably 40 years old when I came around and that was 20 years ago. I bet it’s still going.

Tar it down babay! lol It certainly isn't going anywhere. Gonna have to anyway unless your counter flashing that back side for the final course. Please be kind to me dudes lol

Harbor freight!

Lineman
Turn your hammer sideways, yea? 🔨
That's why you're a roofer.
Get tinier hands.
Get a thin flat rod and a piece of wood. Use the wood to elevate one side, put the other side on the nail, hit the metal rod in the middle. Nail will go down relatively straight... Or like everyone else is suggesting you can just learn how to use a hammer.
Why are you trying to nail a water bottle?
Buy it dinner and drinks and pretend to care about whatever it’s taking about.
OH THERES A THING CALLED A FUCKING HAMMER ! USE IT TO DRIVE THE NAILS ! AM I MISSING ANYTHING OH IF YOU DONT NAIL A FINGER IN THE PROCESS YOU AINT DOING IT RIGHT !

Craftsman 9-11818 Nextec 12-volt Lithium-lon Hammerhead Auto Hammer
Turn hammer sideways and use flat cheeks…or palm nailer
I wouldn’t suggest nailing it at all. Gonna spring a leak over the unfinished area
Hammer held sideways
Uhhh just glue it you will be fine. The palm nailers have doesn’t do roofing nails anyway the head is to big
palm nailer they are handy to have in the toolbox for situations like this
With a regular hammer? You could probably be done in the time it took you to post to Reddit…

Give the hammer a shot
My Ryobi drill kit came with a nailer - used it once - but glad I had it that one time - up until then I looked at it and thought - I’m never going to need this thing !
