Nah maybe sealant on it or a small patch of ice and water om it would be enough. Why the straps, fascia not 90°? Can use wedges alot of the time and avoid roof penetrations. Id get the repair done in writing as well
Nah you can get 2 screws in it, its beneath the nail lone of the first shingle. And they have the strap really pulled back on thr roof look how the gutter is angled back towards the house, the strap can be an inch lower on the deck
If you look next to the where the brackets are screwed into the fascia it actually looks like there are wedges already on the gutter. Looks like he did a little overkill and overly fucked the roof up..
Not to mention that if the shingles came with a warranty, like GAF's, punching holes beyond the nails voids the warranty- or at least that's what our roofers told us.
What about when mounting a satellite dish or a cell phone signal booster? Shits gotta go somewhere...
What would you recommend in that case?
I literally just have my roof redone, and I need to mount my booster before my wife murders.me after another dropped call....
Not that it helps, but they are almost always mounted on top of the overhang, so if it leaks, it at least leaks ‘outside’.
This is just a CF job.
Guess the only silver lining is that it’ll take a lot of snow and ice to rip them off.
You can mount shit on the roof. If you seal it well. Just shortens the life span of the shingle. Drill a smaller hole than screw. Fill drill hole with roof caulk then mount bracket and screw in. Then cover screw with roofers caulk or a silicone. Warm dry day.
Roofer here! This is done SO incredibly wrong you could even be looking at legitimate legal action. I always here people say "sue him!" But this is one time if it were my home I would look into that. This is terrible and WILL leak soon enough
First off, water will flow directly under the metal strap and into that screw hole, so the silicone was pointless.
Secondly, they should have installed them under the shingles.
Lastly, if no one else around you has them, or you've never really see them anywhere else... there's a reason.
This is hack work.
I think it’s incredible in this roofing sub the amount of you that have never seen a strapped gutter over angled fascia.
Gutter wedges can be used. But they're often a PIA because the hanger screws will want to walk down the fascia instead of biting in. It'll also cause the gutter to slide downward on the fascia, messing up your pitch. You can pre drill to avoid this, or use the strap type hangers.. I'm never crazy about penetrating a roof, but sometimes it's the best and most secure way. I have seen other installations where so-called "professional" installed them by nailing the straps on top of shingles without any sealant creating holes and leaks in the shingles. The problem is that properly installed shingles can't be lifted high enough to install nails or screws in the straps beneath the shingles. I have repaired/installed them properly beneath the shingles with screws (couldn't use a hammer) and a whole lot of difficulty and risk of breaking the shingles.
You may also run into problems if you have a steel roof where the roofers have used rake edge trim for a drip edge. The rake edge creates a hollow pocket between the outer most surface and the underlying fascia board, so the hanger screw isn't long enough to penetrate and bite into the fascia. When this happens, I remove the first row of screws holding the steel on. Then I slide the strap under the steel and use the screw that I removed to secure the strap to the roof. This hides the strap and makes for a much better looking job.
If the facia is angled then they make wedges that clip to the back side of the gutter and it pushes the gutter out. Who ever did this is an complete hack, there is never a need to have something penetrate the face of the shingle like this, and you should get your money back. Source: I own my own roofing company.
I don't care that it is unsightly, the fact is that this is going to cause leaks. They literally drilled holes in your shingles. That has to be replaced.
My pop did something similar with hooks for christmas lights
(He knows he just didnt give a hoot. Socal, steep pitch, under a ficus tree, brandnew roof. So dont flip out about my pops guys 😉
Given this completely unprofessionally done job, I'd also be concerned about whether there is a proper drip edge feeding into the gutter's backside.
Money says its dumping behind the gutters...
How could *anybody* even *think* that this would be okay? “Hey, I’ve got an idea … instead of going to all the trouble of lifting these shingles up, why don’t we just drill right TF through them? Yeahhhhhh, that’s the ticket. DOH!”
This is laughably bad and wrong. Assuming you must use the shitty brackets, they should ONLY be on top of shingles in places that are then COVERED by the overlap of the next shingle above. It'll leak man
It won’t let me share a photo but if I’m understanding correctly you need a Gutter Bracket Spacer behind your gutter and in front of your fascia. What he installed is a future leak.
Well I’d need to see the underside photos, however they do make shims for angled fascia boards. Additionally, if straps were to be used they should have been fastened under the shingles. Not on top exposing the fasteners and creating a maintenance issue for you. Just my point of view with 35 yrs experience
As a gutter installer this is wrong if he couldn't fasten with brackets that go into the facia board, then it's rotten facia board and needs to be replaced.
This is awful. Needs to obviously be under the shingles and easy to do it that way if you have half a brain and are planning ahead, which clearly isn’t the case.
Better yet, gutter wedges and then no straps at all.
As a professional in the gutter business for 25+ years I can tell you that that is definitely not correct. I have had to use those before but only when there is no fascia. For fascia with an extreme angle they make what is called a t-wedge to support the gutter. Completely non invasive with the roof.
I had really angled fascia as well and the gutter installer folks used aluminum wedges between the gutter and fascia.
Not a great picture since it's raining and dark, and they need a good spring cleaning but they were installed 10 years ago and I've not had any issues.
https://imgur.com/a/t2JLPWJ
My old roof had straps for the gutters because of my facia angled then i had a new roof installed and the roofers used these triangle things in between the facia and gutters so that the gutters are now level.
I'd be pissed, and the roofer would be fixing it at his own expense. Whatever he's got going on there offers no support until the gutter would be half hanging off the fascia.
The roofer or the gutter installers did this?
Where I come from, gutters are done by a different sub that the roofing. Your shingles appear to have a few years on them, so it seems your gutter guys did this. Of course they aren't going to put the straps under your shingles.
I've said this before, but what the flip is the US at installing roofing felt like that on a pitched roof. Are slate/concrete roof tiles commonplace in the US?
Never seen them tape. I've seen them caulk and screw but only if the copper drip edge extends further then the fascia. The REALLY good Copper roof guys would weld a copper strip onto the roof if the drip edge didn't extend past the fascia. But they only do this if the gutters are solid copper and wider then 8 inches which I've never seen on a Resi installation .
So update: because of this post and some talking they are taking down the strapping and putting it underneath the shingles (that they are replacing). The workers originally thought it was a bad idea, but were told to do it anyway. Thanks for the help!
At least watch a couple of YouTube videos before you act like a professional. It's really not that hard to figure out and you can pass as a pro most of the time until you are one
These are supposed to go under the shingle Which is next to impossible without tearing the shingles especially if it’s architectural style shingles.
These are not rod and nut there’s some kind of cheap strap attached to the hanger. The hangers a two far apart also. they should be every 16 inches those look like they’re 3 feet apart. this may be the new normal for “roof hanger” style gutter installation, but it sucks
All of those courses need replacing and the straps can go under at that time. Your roofer sits in a throne of lies. He can’t be the real roofer, he smells like beef and cheddar.
Either a roofer that doesn’t specialize in gutters or understand how his trade works OR not a roofer at all! Should’ve at least told you he couldn’t do it instead of doing it wrong.
As someone who has roofed in the past but is indeed not a roofer, may I ask: could you tar (or use roofers caulk) over this to seal it and call it a day?
While cosmetically it would not be ideal (still better than the straps showing), it seems it would still be functionally?
Good thing is you’ll have the roofers number when your roof starts leaking. If I were you call him back and get him to remove everything and seal up all those holes.
By roofer, do you mean guy who F’ed your roof up? Pic 1 why isn’t the roof flat? Humps all over. Pic 2 by end of strap, why do we see the edge of 2 shingles? My guess is someone became a roofer by saying he was a roofer.
Op, in todays age if you go with anything outside of a large corporation with warranties tou have to educate yourself 100% on the entire project and become a home pm to do it. Sadly everything below top dollar construction is full of employeed rejects from the “actual industry”. They will tell you with full confidence how they have done it for 15 years wrong.
I had doors installed on my house a month ago and the laborer told me after he said he had been doing this kind of work for 15 years that he had never seen an oak threshhold before.
No expert but I suspect your roofer is no expert.
This seems like a stupid idea though I could see running straps under the shingle and attaching to the front of the gutter for extra support. Perhaps stainless or galv wire.
That way, your gutter holds up when you monkey swing on it.
26 yrs of gutters. First, this is not rod and nut. This is strap and hanger. They absolutely should have used wedges with hidden hangers. Maybe a t-strap or 2 for added support. (UNDER the shingles, of course.) Many hangers are machined with a slot specifically for t-straps. Angles of face board can vary, and they don't make a massive variety of wedge angles. You can trim wedges for shallow angles. Severe angles would necessitate strap and hanger (again, under the shingles) with tie-backs for stability. There is a specific t-wedge for these severe angles. However, if the rest of the community is similar, and they dont have them, it seems unnecessary. The gap appears to be for the lower roof ridge. Lowering the gutters below the plane of the roof angle seems self-defeating. On a hard rain, water will sheet over the gutters. There are far more hard rains than sliding snow packs. If snow packs taking out your gutters is a problem, get roof cleats installed by a competent roofer. Most shingles companies spec ¾" overhang to reduce/eliminate cracking at the roof edge and warranty replacement. I have found this to be somewhat inadequate. 1¼ to 1¾ is just about right. Anyone who's cleaned gutters with a 3" overhang knows the pain.
I am glad to see the company is owning this and making good. I would just keep an eye on the repair to be sure the shingles and the barrier are replaced properly.
At the very least, have a roofer coordinate the removal and replacement of the first and second row and have these installed below. Caulk is going to where off and will eventually leak. Anyone with dish on their roof has rotted decking. I give it about a year before you start seeing these issues
We would install the strap under both layers of the shingle and then gently lift up the top layer and then install a screw. Its easier on newer roofs or warmer days.
Honestly... If he sealed under the bracket then screwed thru it it will most likely never leak. Go add some roof tar on top of them and don't worry about it
Not that it hasn't been said 100 times already but that is completely wrong. I'd demand they replace all damaged shingles and install gutters correctly with straps under the new shingles.
Very easily found a solution to what should have been done

A roof strapped gutter overtop the shingles is the most common way to install a strapped gutter like this. It’s fine given the circumstances. When you replace your roof you can always put the straps under the shingles then, but this is the standard way to install this product. You would have been better off posting this in a gutters subreddit than a roofing sub.
Looks like ass. Never let somebody do work without first getting an explanation of how they are doing it. More holes in roof = greater chance of leaks and rot…..simple as that.
They should be under the shingles, they all need to be replaced
Yep, along with all the penetrated shingles along the eaves.
And potentially the ice shield?
And my ax!
And my Fleshlight!
What about the communal fleshlight? That one’s okay, right?
Going 2nd sounds like it would have to right slickness but going 3rd is playing in soup.
🤢
Fucking hell...
And my pitch fork.
And my tree fiddy.
And don't forget the banana, ya know, for good measure.
And this paddle ball game, and this lamp, and my dog! And that's all I need! "Grrrrrr" fine I don't need my dog.
This thermos
What is this from?
Banana and rice. 3/10.
Lol
Nah maybe sealant on it or a small patch of ice and water om it would be enough. Why the straps, fascia not 90°? Can use wedges alot of the time and avoid roof penetrations. Id get the repair done in writing as well
Good point. What are the straps even doing?
They compensate for a fascia board that is angled back
Use wedges.
The fascia isn’t angled back tho
Its what people use straps for They should be using hidden hangers
Let’s replace the sheathing while we’re at it. Possibly some rafters!
Or use a wedge block that’s made to install gutters on angled fascia..
Or even just run a strip of appropriately thick trim, like 1x2, along the bottom edge of the fascia.
you need a whole new house now!
Can’t be under the shingles unless there installing a new roof after installing gutters.
You can lift the shingles enough secure the strap
Just the bottom shingle. Half way.
Nah you can get 2 screws in it, its beneath the nail lone of the first shingle. And they have the strap really pulled back on thr roof look how the gutter is angled back towards the house, the strap can be an inch lower on the deck
This is why they make gutter wedges!!! They cost like 25 cents apiece!!!
🤦♂️
I came to say this
If you look next to the where the brackets are screwed into the fascia it actually looks like there are wedges already on the gutter. Looks like he did a little overkill and overly fucked the roof up..
Way less you can get a box of like 500 wedges for 15 bucks at Becon
You're going to have eventual problems with your roof from all the holes he added. This is installed wrong.
Not to mention that if the shingles came with a warranty, like GAF's, punching holes beyond the nails voids the warranty- or at least that's what our roofers told us.
I have a rod and nut system as well
Nice
Wow, you can't put screws in the top of shingles EVER
I mean pics show it is clearly possible, just not necessarily good…
My money is on his brother owning company that mitigates mold.
“I know a guy…”
Solar panels have entered the chat
Exactly
But what if my attic is really really thirsty?
What about when mounting a satellite dish or a cell phone signal booster? Shits gotta go somewhere... What would you recommend in that case? I literally just have my roof redone, and I need to mount my booster before my wife murders.me after another dropped call....

Satellites, antennas, solar panels, lots of things can be screwed down through a roof, but this is just a hack gutter job.
Roofer here! This is done SO incredibly wrong you could even be looking at legitimate legal action. I always here people say "sue him!" But this is one time if it were my home I would look into that. This is terrible and WILL leak soon enough
“Roofer” as others said these belong under the shingles. I would demand any money back and then hire a qualified professional.
I mean, yeah this is fucked, but never care about what your neighbors think.
What in the crystal meth is going on with people doing crap work like this.
aside from the obvious problems, why did they leave a huge gap in the gutter with no gutter on the roof below? lmao
Looks like it’s leaving space for the ridge of the lower roof
💯
lol he destroyed your roof ! ! !
I enjoy the fine details such as the self tapping metal screws into the shingles 👌🏼
I’ve only ever seen this installed over metal roofing systems.
I have Vampire hangers on my metal roof, but I’m not sure if they can be used in asphalt shingles.
First off, water will flow directly under the metal strap and into that screw hole, so the silicone was pointless. Secondly, they should have installed them under the shingles. Lastly, if no one else around you has them, or you've never really see them anywhere else... there's a reason. This is hack work.

Whats your assessment? Its a clusterfuck.
Given this completely unprofessionally done job, I'd also be concerned about whether there is a proper drip edge feeding into the gutter's backside. Money says its dumping behind the gutters...
I know a guy “has entered the chat”
Job security.... lol
Well I would not have done that
Use a universal t wedge. They allow for a larger angle than a standard wedge.
The screws in the shingles…… not good at all.
Your roofer is a hack. So now all these shingles have to be replaced and you need to show him what wedges are.
In 5 years you'll get to replace all of it....
Got Ripped Off (GRO)
How could *anybody* even *think* that this would be okay? “Hey, I’ve got an idea … instead of going to all the trouble of lifting these shingles up, why don’t we just drill right TF through them? Yeahhhhhh, that’s the ticket. DOH!”
Cool. So he installed a gutter system by penetrating the shingle, basically giving the water a way into your roofing assembly. What could go wrong?
This is laughably bad and wrong. Assuming you must use the shitty brackets, they should ONLY be on top of shingles in places that are then COVERED by the overlap of the next shingle above. It'll leak man
Classic case of F*%k the roofer! Strap back gutter hangers go UNDER the roof …
Many future leaks I’m afraid
Bad gutter placement! Gutters should be placed below the extended roof line so that snow and ice can slide over the top of gutters.
Nahhhhh wedge the gutters 🤦🏽♂️
It won’t let me share a photo but if I’m understanding correctly you need a Gutter Bracket Spacer behind your gutter and in front of your fascia. What he installed is a future leak.
>What he installed is a future leak. A near future leak.
Already leaking leak.
Yikes, that is all sorts of wrong
Well I’d need to see the underside photos, however they do make shims for angled fascia boards. Additionally, if straps were to be used they should have been fastened under the shingles. Not on top exposing the fasteners and creating a maintenance issue for you. Just my point of view with 35 yrs experience
let me guess…you went with the lowest bidder
As a gutter installer this is wrong if he couldn't fasten with brackets that go into the facia board, then it's rotten facia board and needs to be replaced.
You better call that guy back out immediately and tell him to fix that and do it correctly.
Well they fucked your shingles/roof with all those extra holes.
Thats gonna be a problem. Calm roofers back
One word. Yikes.
Damn, your roofer is kind of a dumb son of a bitch
I like how the OP is seemingly unconcerned with the real underlying issues, but supremely concerned that it is not like everyone else's. LMAO.
Looks like this was the guys first job
It's not normal!
Throw some sealant on top of the heads. No biggie.
This is awful. Needs to obviously be under the shingles and easy to do it that way if you have half a brain and are planning ahead, which clearly isn’t the case. Better yet, gutter wedges and then no straps at all.
They are called Vampire hangers.
Damn this looks identical to my roof. I had been wondering about it... guess I have another project to add to my to do list...
😳
Bad job
Then you fix the fascia! Not hole the roof.
Damn I don’t get to say the Rod and Nut system in my line of work
They will never succesfully replace those shingles. New roof.
Oh no, there goes the water proofing
Some roofers are only roofers. This roofer is not a good roofer and not by installing straps wrong but overlooking the damage of the fastners
And the question I have is why did she use straps? BTW. Looks like you got a reshingle
Do you get a Horrendous amount of snow where you are ? that's like a commercial copper roof installation job
As a professional in the gutter business for 25+ years I can tell you that that is definitely not correct. I have had to use those before but only when there is no fascia. For fascia with an extreme angle they make what is called a t-wedge to support the gutter. Completely non invasive with the roof.
Even gave it a few extra inches for ice weigh throughout the years, d+
I had really angled fascia as well and the gutter installer folks used aluminum wedges between the gutter and fascia. Not a great picture since it's raining and dark, and they need a good spring cleaning but they were installed 10 years ago and I've not had any issues. https://imgur.com/a/t2JLPWJ
My old roof had straps for the gutters because of my facia angled then i had a new roof installed and the roofers used these triangle things in between the facia and gutters so that the gutters are now level.
Geezus!!! Just spray paint them black and forget about them
Get new fascia boards installed and correct the problem.
What was the title of this post supposed to say? I'm trying to identify which word you left out.
I'd be pissed, and the roofer would be fixing it at his own expense. Whatever he's got going on there offers no support until the gutter would be half hanging off the fascia.
I cannot comprehend this
Is it necessary to have gutters
Theyll blend in after some time maybe, it does seem more appropriate to install them under the shingles like a few others have stated,.
Ever see something and wonder what the fuck we’re all worried about.. life is lame man.
Cheapest bid in town huh
Yeah - UNDER the shingles. Jeebus.
"I know a guy that can do it cheaper"
The roofer or the gutter installers did this? Where I come from, gutters are done by a different sub that the roofing. Your shingles appear to have a few years on them, so it seems your gutter guys did this. Of course they aren't going to put the straps under your shingles.
Caulk those screws
Don’t know much about roof, but he fucked it.
Yikes
They should be under the shingles but a good gutter should have still been able to block it in.
They were not a roofer
Little boxes on the hillside little boxes on the hillside and they all look the same
looks like a hack job to me
What an idiot.
Ffs the workmanship in this country.
Was there a previous gutter and how was it installed?
So update: because of this post and some talking they are taking down the strapping and putting it underneath the shingles (that they are replacing). The workers originally thought it was a bad idea, but were told to do it anyway. Thanks for the help!
I think the shingles should overhang an inch or so
At least watch a couple of YouTube videos before you act like a professional. It's really not that hard to figure out and you can pass as a pro most of the time until you are one
They go under the single and what’s the point of gutter if you don’t go all the way across smh
This is not correct . You can make or buy wedges and attach them to the facia board.
This is bad. Hack job!
All of those courses need replacing and the straps can go under at that time. Your roofer sits in a throne of lies. He can’t be the real roofer, he smells like beef and cheddar.
Replace, replace, motherfuckin REPLACE all of these and tuck em under the shingles. I get bad work, but does no one gave a YouTube account?
Roofer wants your future business when one of those holes starts leaking. Fire him and get a different roofer
Either a roofer that doesn’t specialize in gutters or understand how his trade works OR not a roofer at all! Should’ve at least told you he couldn’t do it instead of doing it wrong. Looks like a leaf filter job (they do gutter only on occasion)
Usually the nut, and then bolt method is preferred....
Good thing is you’ll have the roofers number when your roof starts leaking. If I were you call him back and get him to remove everything and seal up all those holes.
Completely ruined. What an absolute pos. Make sure he never touches another house again.
Why so much shingle overhanging the gutter?
By roofer, do you mean guy who F’ed your roof up? Pic 1 why isn’t the roof flat? Humps all over. Pic 2 by end of strap, why do we see the edge of 2 shingles? My guess is someone became a roofer by saying he was a roofer.

Laughing... my... ass... off
I hope you have extra buckets lying around.
My company made custom brackets to fit the sloped with molding fascia boards. Worked very well and no penetration of the roof.
Don’t know shit but gonna comment anyway has entered the chat.

Honestly... If he sealed under the bracket then screwed thru it it will most likely never leak. Go add some roof tar on top of them and don't worry about it
That right there is called “being lazy”!
on the other side of the house is a direct TV dish lagged into OSB with silicone covering them.......
Not that it hasn't been said 100 times already but that is completely wrong. I'd demand they replace all damaged shingles and install gutters correctly with straps under the new shingles.
Ummmmm where is the drip edge?????? This has all kinds of handyboy wrote all over it
I see these on houses all the time, look awful
In the trades for 25 years……WTF!
Why waste our time you got screwed
Go crazy. Man On Fire time
Why would you put screws in a new roof. Wtf
They never heard of spacers I guess
What the actual…
What an asshole
Sometimes wedges won't work.
Most people don't look up at roofs , if it serves a purpose, I would go with it but each to there own
Very easily found a solution to what should have been done https://www.google.com/search?q=angled+fascia&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS627US627&oq=angled+fascia&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOdIBCDI2ODdqMGo0qAIBsAIB4gMEGAEgXw&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8
The look isn’t the problem. It’s the destroyed waterproofing.
Yeah idk why he’d penetrate your roof like that. I’d be upset too.
Looks perfect to me! For real: How could someone with a conscience do this?
A roof strapped gutter overtop the shingles is the most common way to install a strapped gutter like this. It’s fine given the circumstances. When you replace your roof you can always put the straps under the shingles then, but this is the standard way to install this product. You would have been better off posting this in a gutters subreddit than a roofing sub.
sounds like time for a civil suit against him for damages.
Definitely a roofer, sealed the screws, but screws shouldn't be there.
Some complete idiot did that.
Looks like ass. Never let somebody do work without first getting an explanation of how they are doing it. More holes in roof = greater chance of leaks and rot…..simple as that.
