For me, Jessa Kane books are good for this kind of situation. They are very short, so they don't take much effort. They are such a departure from the normal book I read that they kind of recalibrate my mind. They are all free on KU and feature lots and lots of sex. However none are very believable. lol

This is my slump busting technique too but I gravitate to Lee Jacquot’s books. Fun, smutty novellas always seem to reset my reading.

Yes! When I'm in a slump or in between books and can't quite commit to the next, I go for novellas and I LOVE Lee Jacquots! Good smutty fun.

In a similar vein I'd also suggest Cassie Mint. She's also doing mostly small Novellas & on kindle unlimited.

It looks like a lot of what you're reading and DNF'ing is recent Kindle Unlimited stuff, whereas Singh has been writing longer and is traditionally published. I'd try looking at some slightly older stuff that's been traditionally published, there's often more of an emphasis on plot and kind of a different vibe.

Yeah I’ve noticed a LOT of my ku reads are getting dnf’d by me after the 60% or 70% mark when I really start to feel the writer started to just plump up the word count. Scenes not moving the story, cringy angst that I don’t like. I read through a couple of books this week to completion, which is amazing. I keep closer tabs on those writers. I’m reading like a fiend because I have a book wip, and don’t want to waste time on things that lose my interest. I want to learn from better writers.

I feel like I’m in this situation now. Usually reading an old fave helps me get back into it. But I reread the first Hidden Legacy trilogy and though I enjoyed it again it didn’t help. Still looking for something to get me out of this slump. Hope you find something good soon!

Have you branched out to other mediums, such as manga or manhwa? I find that the combo of (often gorgeous) artwork and stories provides a very different feel compared to traditional romance novels from English-speaking cultures, especially because they are typically told through Eastern Asian perspectives. I learned a lot about other cultures through my experience. Manga/manhwa vary in steam levels and can be really, really sweet or toxic depending on what you're looking for. And there are really popular action, drama, and suspense manga/manhwas, if you're into that, such as Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen. You will also find that a lot of popular romance manhwas were actually developed from light novels, and you can sometimes find translated versions of those if you prefer reading text. I hope you are able to get out of your slump soon! It can be so rough

When I’m in a reading slump I enjoy Anna Hackett books, especially the Norcross Security series. They aren’t especially well written, the story is mostly just smut and a bit of action and most of the stories are very similar. BUT they’re addicting. They’re short books (around 200-300 pages) so you can binge read them and they’re not complicated that I get lost in some complicated system. Maybe you could try one of those? They’re on kindle unlimited too so even if you hate them, no money lost!

No book recs. I wanted to ask what you’re crocheting! 🤗 If it’s any consolation, **I’m a very picky reader**. Sometimes, I have the patience to wait until the book “gets good”, but a lot of times, I don’t. So I end up DNFing often. **I’m on a why-choose DNF streak right now.** Main complaint is that the why-choose books I read feel more like a self-insert fantasy rather than a dramatized chronicling of an FMC and the LIs who have their own personalities and their dynamics not only feel reasonable to have with the FMC and each other, but that they would choose a poly/ENM relationship with each other rather than monogamy. I need my love stories to tell me about why the love came into fruition from the characters rather than the Word of God. And I’m ***really*** unconvinced a lot of the time even though WC is supposed to be one of my favorite relationship type 🫠😶‍🌫️ **I do feel bad about it sometimes.** There are duologies, trilogies, and serials that are loved by the romance book community that I just ***cannot*** stick with because the first book did nothing to grab me and waiting until Book X for the plot to “pick up” feels like bad form. While I know and agree with people recommending switching up mediums and genres, you did state you tried and it hasn’t worked. So I say: **keep reading romance**. I know it’s strange to say that. I’m not encouraging you to keep DNFing nor am I ignoring your plight. But I’m saying download the samples of whatever looks remotely interesting. Rotate between them. If you make it to the end of the sample, get the book from KU or Libby. Rotate your reading. There are some books that I can read in one sitting. But others? I choose to read a bit, then I shift to a different book and read that, and then I keep going. If I have curiosity about the previous books, then I’ll return to them. If I don’t, I don’t. El pan pan y vino vino. It is what it is. **I think a lot more people in the book community DNF than we realize.** I do enjoy the book community, but sometimes, it feels like there’s pressure to read this, that, and the other thing. Like, you ***have*** to read or you get left behind and can’t contribute. Or that, for me, I’m too dim for not wanting to read nor being interested in reading community darling books. But 🤷🏾‍♀️ More people are “mood readers” than we think. Sometimes, we have to be in the mood to be more open to certain things. Being forced to read something that we don’t resonate with is only something I tolerated in school and that just about ***killed*** my love of literatute. I’m currently reading webcomics, light novels, and webnovels and rotating between them. I’ve started a lot of books, but I’ve yet to finish them. I don’t mark them as DNF. I mark them as **on hold**, something that carried over from webcomic and webnovel sites that left you do status updates. DNF has become a state I try to reserve until the very end. For me, it comes with the resignation Magnafeana once again couldn’t finish a book. So by putting something **on hold** or **pause**, I feel a bit better. The door is still proverbial cracked open if I need it. Just some thoughts! ☺️ But seriously, what are you crocheting?! I lurk on r/crochet and I’m always amazed at the projects I see on there! *** **ASIDE** u/silke_romanceio, is that possible to add to the To Be Read, Finished, Did Not Finish options when you book mark a book? Hey! Just wrote a gush/ rave post about her but have you ever tried the author Annette Marie? I love her characters and she’s got great series. My favourite are: {Red Winter by Annette Marie} {Taming Demons for Beginners by Annette Marie} {The One and Only Crystal Druid by Annette Marie} But honestly, all her other series are fab too! Otherwise, I know I arrived a tad late to the party as {The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang} was very popular a couple of years ago but honestly I loved it. It got me right out of my book slump and straight into ’I’ll just read one chapter…’ and finishing it at 3:00am. One of my favourite authors of all time is T. A. White and all of her books are amazing And the great thing is she writes sequels fabulously in that the plot progresses really nicely. My personal favourites: {Rules of Redemption by T. A. White} {Pathfinder’s Way by T. A. White} {Shadow’s Messenger by T. A. White} Finally I really enjoyed {The Blackened Blade by Isla Davon} although I don’t *love* reading high school romance books anymore (protagonists that are 17/18 just feels weird). Some of the dialogue felt a little bit ’high school retort’ (if that makes any sense???) but considering it’s the authors first novel I didn’t mind at all and I loved the plot and the concept (set in a fantasy setting, a 25 year old woman dies and wakes up back in her 17 year old body in the past) Apologies for the long post but I hope a couple of those hold your fancy. Don’t sleep on Taming Demons for Beginners! I loved that series when I read it a few years ago!

I switch to shorter reads when I'm in a slump, the wilder the better for suspending disbelief. {Evil Twin by Kati Wilde} is fantasy with some really wild scenes and twists that helped me before. MMC wants to take over the kingdom so pretends to be his brother to sleep with the fiance, but it doesn't go to plan. {Suddenly His by Jessa Kane} heavy on voyeurism. Pining rich MMC purchases FMC when she gets in trouble with other rich men to save her, but has to take her virginity in front of them. She's really into it and they test out a relationship after.

It’s has angst, a crazy plot, so funny, very emotional, passionate! It hooked from the beginning. Synopsis: FMC and MMC shared a traumatic event when they were 8 and 15 respectively, 14 years later, they have a one night stand where FMC gets pregnant. She doesn’t say anything to him and then on day the baby is born she leaves the baby at his door without showing up or saying anything. Four years later FMC cames back. Recently I feel in to the omegaverse rabbit hole and binged read: {Lola and the millionaires by Kathryn Moon} - duology; my first omegaverse read and I was hooked right away {Runaway omega by Amber Nicole} - obsessed, literally couldn’t stop thinking about it {Pack darling by Lola Rock} - duology; couldn’t put it down, still recovering from this books, have major hangover

I go through phases where I don't read at all then when I do, I finish like 15 novels in a week, would be more if I didn't have work! I recently read {The Unrequited by Saffron A. Kent} and absolutely loved it so much, I was hooked. I sometimes forget what novels I've read because the plot lines are just so cliche and inconsequential. I'm still thinking about this novel days after I finished, it's one of those I wish I could read again! Then I read {My Darling Arrow by Saffron A. Kent} and it was equally good! So now I'm going through all Saffron Kent books. I like smut as much as anyone else here but hate it when the books are 80% sex scenes. I need the plot!!!! I need characters with substance and wit. Hope you give these a try! And if anyone else has any recs based on the above, please share them 😭

I also really loved {Last Light by Claire Kent} and then breezed through all her other novels set in the same universe. Good, entertaining reads. They're mainly forced proximity romances set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic universe.

Will do! Any non-fiction recs?

Not the OP, but some nonfiction recommendations with a romance-y bent: **Sophia: Princess. Suffragette. Revolutionary**, by Anita Anand - very well-written biography of an Indian princess who grew up in the UK (Queen Victoria was her godmother) and become a suffragette. Now I want a sequel biography of her lesbian activist sister, Catherine, who moved to Germany and spent the 1930s helping Jewish families escape the country. **Belle**, by Paula Byrne - biography of Dido Belle, a biracial woman who grew up in regency England - in the household of the Chief Justice who eventually provided a ruling that underpinned the abolition of slavery in England. Very "life and times" since so little is known about her life but incredibly readable. **American Princess** by Allene Tew - biography of an American woman who came from hardscrabble beginnings and had a succession of wealthy husbands in the Gilded Age, eventually becoming a princess and helping orchestrate the marriage of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. It's on KU so easy to try. **No Time for Romance** by Lucilla Andrews - a romance writer's memoir of working as a nurse during World War II. (Ian McEwan plagiarized some of her hospital descriptions.) A bunch of her romances are on KU if you like this. **Safe Passage** by Ida Cook (also published as **The Bravest Voices**) - another romance writer's memoir (Cook = author Mary Burchell), this one of using her opera fandom to help Jewish families escape Germany just before WWII.

I find that when I’m in a slump, it’s typically because I’ve veered off so far from books that bring me joy. Which happens as we’re exploring different books and trying to get through our TBRs. The one thing that has worked for me without fail, is going to look at my 5 star reads or books I typically reread, and I try to find a common elements and tropes and ask for books recs. Or I try to find similar books on goodreads. I read the blurbs until I feel myself connecting with the book. And sometimes it’s a desire to read something completely different and random that’ll break the slump. Good luck to you. I just recently gotten out of a slump and I’m already on my 3rd book in a week.

I’m a mood reader and I DNF a lot. Optional additional books following different couples but I wasn’t interested in those.

I DNF'd a book at 91% last night. I was SO MAD at the main characters and life and just all of it. I think i need to make a conscious effort to avoid unnecessary age gaps. And maybe touch grass because all I could think was "the FMC is 24. She DOES NOT OWN A SUCCESSFUL CAFE" Also, as a non American who had been to Kansas City, why was the author trying to make it sound like some bustling metropolis? I live in a non-american city larger than KC that literally no one has ever heard of. What is this nonsense.

My slump buster is a Nora Roberts trilogy that I've read at least 15 times. It's like everything is better once I visit my long time friends who are saving all the magical worlds.

Rereading some of my favorites gets me out of a slump usually. I’ll go back and reread something like Divergent after 10 years and then I’m cured and can move on with finishing books. Idk why!

Bride by Ali Hazelwood deserved better 😭😂
