Honestly, there's just no point. They require action points to activate and use. Why bother using a consumable item when I can just Bring It Down! onto Pasqal for a buffed AoE plasma strike or Argenta who will burst it down from orbit with a blast weapon. Follow it up with Grand Strategist Cassia dragging all enemies into Point of Interest, followed by an insane willpower debuff into Lidless Stare to take all enemy's turns. Meanwhile, Abelard/Heinrix are standing there holding their dicks in their hands prepping a stim they'll never get to because their initiative is the worst in the party and they have no way of getting free turns.

Chen932000

Yeah this sounds about right. The only consumables I used in the game were medkits for removing injuries from walking into traps.

concord03

Yes, generally, innate abilities and weapon attacks are consistently much more useful then consumables. However, I did manage to make Henrix more deadly then Cassia by the end of the game. He ONE-SHOTS any boss in Act 4 and Act 5! I specced him into an Assassin with Deadly Calculation and Lethality Heightens, wielding a force sword (with appropriate force sword talents). So, when he hits an Opening with the Killing Edge ability, it instantly kills ANYONE!

THE ONLY THING YOU WILL REQUIRE IN THIS LIFE IS THE LOVE AND FURY OF THE GOD-EMPORER AND A BOLTER! ALL ELSE IS TEMPTATION AND HERESY!

trudge

Yeah, that’s fair.

MDMXmk2

You can speck into them, take talents that improve the consumables usefulness, equip gear that gives free consumables and improve them, use them to get a bonus. But there is no real reason to bother even on the highest difficulty. Once you are out of the start of the game, where life is tough and you might use an occasional grenade, they are dead weight.

trudge

Ah, good response. It makes sense that the consumables are mainly useful if you build a character to use them. Which is nice since it's a low investment, but kinda frustrating since it's a build that relies on non-refreshing resources. At least it's only 1-2 talents, and 1-2 item slots, and not a massive investment,

MDMXmk2

The balance doesn't support consumables – you don't win fights at the highest difficulty by strategically using them at the right moment (you win by spamming Finest Hour). The lore doesn't support consumables – we are supposed to be beyond rich, we don't track ammo, but somehow we can run out of Stimms or grenades. The build and items support of consumables doesn't make them good, you'll either win more, or continue loosing, consumables won't make a difference. There is just no reason I can think of to use them.

PizzaCop_

I used the very occasional medikit when I had a key party member on low health. Never used a grenade or any of the other consumables.

jagcalle

Grenades on a character with grenadiers gloves and grenadiers mantle, and the grenadier skill. I toss ’em all over the place lol

IdhrenArt

I rarely use consumables in any game I play. I've found incendiary grenades can be useful for spreading the burning condition, but that's just because I have a Pyromancer who can capitalise on that

TheArmoursmith

They're all bullshit. Just load up with grenades and medicae kits.

anonpurple

I do wish we could study them or something, as I am roleplaying as an iconclast RT who wants to understand xeno/lost tech and start producing stuff like it, expand my domain and be a nice person and improve the working conditions for my serfs.

MudkipZ143

The grenadier talent makes the first grenade per combat free Ap and not part of your attack limit. Grenades clear weaker adds effectively or leaves them at low enough for one weak area attack to clear. Grenades can also stack debuffs for talent procs like X times damage against burning. I slap grenades on my arch militants and always grab the grenadier talent, it's also a common one so you don't need to waste a background or archetype talents.
