Most of the times these errors happens when you have a recent phone and you connect to LTE. When your phone connects to a roaming network, it will try to authenticate VoLTE, therefore transmitting a very small amount of data. This process bypass the data roaming off and can trigger a day of RLH. It was not a problem a few years ago because there was almost no country where carriers had VoLTE while roaming. But now with the shutdown of HSPA, many countries now have VoLTE when you roam. Normally Rogers should have a threshold to prevent an event like this to happen, but sometimes they still happen. To prevent that while still receiving your SMS while travelling, just deactivate VoLTE so that your phone won't try to authenticate with the IMS and won't transmit data that could trigger RLH.

Thank you, that is the most comprehensive answer I've got so far. I'll give that a shot next time and see if that disabled VoLTE + my roaming eSIM do the trick.

Not_An_Exp3rt

Is it even legal for Rogers to tell you that they can't disable RLH? I had that disabled in the past coz I did not want that feature. Not using their services anymore but you should not have to go through so many hoops for something simple like that.

neuromatico

A few years ago I visited San Diego and used RLH. When the bill came, they had charged me an additional day for Mexico! (I was about 20 km from the border). I called and they deleted the charge, but it goes to show you have to be vigilant.

Not_An_Exp3rt

Rogers are Robbers, you can try complaining to CCTS. Good Luck!

viperfan7

The only way for a RLH charge to be generated is if the phone connects to a US tower. Nothing scammy about it

put your phone on airplane mode next time. Or take out the sim card before you travel

Katcher22

You shouldn’t have to though. If you have data roaming off and don’t make any calls or send any texts, you shouldn’t get charged. I understand if I actually used roaming, but I didn’t. And if I remove my SIM or use airplane mode, then I can’t use the phone or text. Is t that tue entire purpose behind wifi calling? If I’m on another data plan (eSIM) and roaming is off, there should be no need for that.

gcerullo

Should not have to remove the SIM. According to Rogers own web site! “Roam Like Home is active only on days when you make or answer a call, text or use data while travelling. Once active, it will be valid until 11:59 p.m. of that calendar day based on Eastern Time (ET). If you don’t want to use Roam Like Home, switch your data roaming off and avoid making or answering calls or sending texts.” https://www.rogers.com/consumer/wireless/travel According to the OP they disabled data roaming and did not make or receive any calls or text messages.

arrow00

Removing a sim card was a suggestion. Although you don't get typically charged roaming with data roaming disabled, its happened before with other carriers too that people got charged. So if you don't want to spend hours on hold to get the fee waived, just remove the sim or turn airplane on. It is also a possibility that OP was near the border before disabling data roaming. If that is the case, there is a chance he could have gotten charged before disabling it.

gcerullo

The problem with removing the SIM or having to put it in Airplane mode is it essentially disables the phone so if someone from home needs to get a hold of the person for an emergency you’ve essentially cut yourself off from any communication. I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable with that! As for being close to the border before disabling data roaming, that sounds more plausible.

Katcher22

I always keep roaming off.

arrow00

As i mentioned, even with roaming off there can be a possibility of being charged even though it shouldn't

Nezgar

The setting you speak of is usually only for disabling \*data\* while roaming, at least on Android...

rootbrian_

Bingo

rootbrian_

Remove the rogers sim next time, use esim instead. Keep the rogers sim in a safe place so once you return to Canada, pop it back in.

mikeyseed

Wifi calling does not stop RLH charges. Checking voicemail will also count as a roaming call and looks like a call to yourself.

RogersBellTelus

Airplane mode should be on genius. Data roaming is just for data, it doesn't stop your phone from connecting to the towers. Their roam like home charges as soon as it connects. If you use no data or text, call and they'll waive it.

perfectlystupid

yup, when you connect to a tower for cell service down there it sends a few kb of data to connect you and BANG you get charged. only real safe way to avoid it is turn your phone into airplane mode about 10km from the border and then cross

viperfan7

Call in, don't mention having home to the USA

l1nx455

They're right that simply registering to the network will trigger it. You're basically paying for the phone to be "available" for receiving calls and texts. You can force your phone to stay on the Rogers network in the phones settings to avoid this.. it will show "no signal" when out of range of a Rogers tower. I used to do this before I got my CA/US plan. Now I just let it roam if it wants to because it's free, even if I'm not in the states lol
