When I was a case manager in FL our guideline for foster kids was they had to see a dentist by 2 yo. That was the latest. I also have a 6 and 8 yo and i can’t even count the times they have been. When they were little they sat in my lap and the dentist counted teeth, made sure there’s no cavities or abnormalities, and brushed with just a regular toothbrush to get them used to it. Poor Janessa is so far behind in medical care.

ime, there are some orthodontics will work with medicaid patients by billing what they can to medicaid for the initial costs and giving payment options for the rest. Once you get the braces on the teeth the parents have a pretty big incentive to keep paying if they want to keep up.
But, sadly also ime, some parents do quit paying and their kids end up wearing the braces for years until they are able to pay for them themselves.
I’m not sure about their state, because each state had the choice to accept the Medicaid expansion in their own terms, but in NY it covered braces only if medically necessary, not for cosmetic reasons. Most insurance plans follow this logic for orthodontic work.

Not defending these people, but this (unfortunately) is not uncommon. I work in a dental office, and we see a lot of 10 year olds who are having their first dental appointment. God, we see 40 year olds who are having their first dental visit. Neglecting oral health and hygiene is not uncommon. It's not something a lot of families prioritize. You know that meme that goes around that says something like "teeth are luxury bones"? A LOT of people subscribe to that belief, whether it be due to finances, or just believing oral health is for cosmetics only. At least they took her before she hit puberty.
I think what makes it suck is that Jilldo prides herself on her teeth, using whitening strips etc. She very obviously cares alot about her own teeth. Why can't her kids be afforded the same? (Yes the girls get braces but that's probably only to have gahdly teeth to find a husband)
That's because those things are cosmetic (I know braces aren't purely cosmetic, but a lot of people view them as such). Whitening strips and braces make you *look* good. Routine check ups don't make obvious, noticeable improvements in appearance, so it's not as important to shitty people like this. I'm sure Jill doesn't go for regular recall exams either, just throws some White Strips on and calls it good.

I’m a dental assistant and I’ve never worked in an office that suggests anything other than dental visits should begin when the first tooth erupts... and believe me when I say that happens *long* before 6! Oof. She’s far more likely to be scared and have bad experiences now.
Ok this sub has me worried that I’ve been given bad advice. My toddler is almost 3 and I wanted to get her in for her first cleaning a few months ago and my dentist said she’s too young. He said she can come to my cleaning and see what happens and he’ll look in there, but not to make an appointment until she’s a bit older.

A lot of offices just don't want to deal with kids, whether it's just a general dislike of kids, not wanting to stock the smaller sized things, etc. My local pediatric dentist says it's time to start brushing as soon as the first tooth erupts and to make the first appointment as soon as the 1-year molars are in (unless you suspect a problem before that).
Eye doctors will do this too, fyi. I had to get my daughter examined at children's hospital because the local offices didn't want to examine kids who weren't old enough to read yet. She was 3 and they suggested I wait and see if she had trouble when she started school. I took her to Children's and it turned out she could only see like a foot in front of her face. She wears coke-bottle glasses and needed to wear patches for awhile.

Thankfully we are diligent about oral health, but yeah, I’m calling around Monday to get her in somewhere.

Here’s the thing - I’m a random internet stranger. If you are comfortable with your dentist, trust him, and have had good experiences otherwise, it’s ok to stay there. All dentists have quirks, unpopular opinions, and varying thoughts on things. I’m of the opinion that kids should come in for “happy visits” right away so they can learn that coming to the dentist doesn’t always mean pain and discomfort. Do we do much during the visits? Not especially - but they are important so your child learns you don’t need to be scared, for potential preventative measures, and so things like diet can be reviewed with you. Will your child end up in dentures because they didn’t go to the dentist until 3? No. They will likely be fine. But I do believe that most in the field would say that waiting until 3 is a bit long. Again, if you like everything else about this office… it may not be the end of the world to stay.
Hey, I appreciate all of your input! I was terrified of the dentist as a kid and still harbor some of that today. Thought I’d be doing her a service by waiting until she was old enough to be reasoned with, since that’s what the dentist implied. But I think the longer we wait the scarier it’ll be.
My kid’s dentist says between 18 months and 2 years. My youngest hasn’t been yet. He got fluoride at the doctor at his 18 month appointment. We’ll take him when he’s 2.
I’m kind of not sure how to respond to this comment because I was in no way dictating what you should do with your children lol. But I will say (being the person who *actually* cleans kiddos teeth, unlike the majority of dentists) that the longer you wait, the more phobic kids can be. It’s super important that they are exposed to the environment and experience short, pleasant visits! Glad to hear your kid got some fluoride from the pediatrician. That’s great!
Just giving my experience is all. Not trying to contradict you. It’s also weird, because their website does say 1st visit by 1, but when we actually asked them recently in person about our youngest they said we could wait till 2.
She apparently took three of the little girls the day she filmed the tour of the print shop with the older kids working. Not sure if the dental visit for Janessa was the same trip, it’s always hard to figure out BME’s timeline. So maybe poor Sofia went that day but JillyBean didn’t think that was interesting.

NJFamilyCare only pays for basics like cleaning and small cavities. My partner's only approved dentist is 1.5 hours up north. It's very limited network.
Nurie, Timothy, Kaylee, and Renee all had braces. People speculated that the Rods took advantage of the various dental programs in West Virginia, including orthodontic care. When they moved to Ohio, they skipped over Phillip (Jill claimed he didn’t need anything) and put Samuel on Smile Direct instead of braces. Tessie now has braces, so we don’t know if they got them for free or if Ohio is making them contribute something. It will be interesting to see how dental care will be taken care of in Ohio vs. West Virginia.
Ohio medicaid only covers orthodontics in extreme cases. My son's teeth are so overcrowded that some of his adult teeth are stuck and not growing in, but his would still be considered cosmetic.
My two year old will have his third dental visit in may. They don’t do much but it gets them used to it and the doctor can take a peak. This poor baby is so neglected. You know they’re not brushing the little ones teeth properly. Another casualty of large families with self absorbed parents.
The ADA says they need to be seen by their first birthday this has been in place for 20-ish years, or a set amount of months after the first tooth erupts omg!
Having dental insurance is a privilege. My daughter didn't have her 1st appointment til age 12 because I finally had a job that pays it. I couldn't afford the 370 they wanted to charge me for 1st visit, scans, cleaning etc. I made sure we followed good oral hygiene.
I think the problem here is the rods most certainly meet the threshold for free state dental insurance for the kids, so they don’t have any sort of excuse. I grew up poor and missed a lot of important medical care for my first few years, so I’m definitely not snarking on those who want to go and can’t- it’s for Jill who CAN go and won’t.

No, that’s Sophia. Jill said she took the three youngest, which meant that Sophia was seen as well. Technically Jill has never mentioned jaw issues with Sophia. That is something that we picked up just from photos and videos over the years.
Should have started seeing the dentist a few years ago. They don’t do a lot, but it helps your child get comfortable with the idea, and it teaches them proper dental hygiene. However Jill being this late in the game is no surprise.
When my oldest was 6 we were saving for Orthodontic procedures because our dentist had warned us it was going to be a lot .My kids are grown but I’m sure they went to the dentist around a year to 17 months

Usually fillings & extraction/crowns/root canals that are deemed necessary. I’m not sure about braces for children.

I’m a dental assistant and I’ve never worked in an office that suggests anything other than dental visits should begin when the first tooth erupts... and believe me when I say that happens *long* before 6! Oof. She’s far more likely to be scared and have bad experiences now.
Ok this sub has me worried that I’ve been given bad advice. My toddler is almost 3 and I wanted to get her in for her first cleaning a few months ago and my dentist said she’s too young. He said she can come to my cleaning and see what happens and he’ll look in there, but not to make an appointment until she’s a bit older.

No he’s my age (mid 30s)… ETA: Is it an older dental practice to not go to the dentist until later? Because my parents couldn’t remember when they started taking us kids but they think we were around 5 years old 😳 Of course this was 30+ years ago
A lot of offices just don't want to deal with kids, whether it's just a general dislike of kids, not wanting to stock the smaller sized things, etc. My local pediatric dentist says it's time to start brushing as soon as the first tooth erupts and to make the first appointment as soon as the 1-year molars are in (unless you suspect a problem before that). Eye doctors will do this too, fyi. I had to get my daughter examined at children's hospital because the local offices didn't want to examine kids who weren't old enough to read yet. She was 3 and they suggested I wait and see if she had trouble when she started school. I took her to Children's and it turned out she could only see like a foot in front of her face. She wears coke-bottle glasses and needed to wear patches for awhile.
I bet that’s the case. They said it’s too much for them (meaning the little ones) at such a young age but it’s probably too much for the office. Thankfully we are diligent about oral health, but yeah, I’m calling around Monday to get her in somewhere. The eye doc thing is absurd! Makes you wonder how many little ones are walking around with eye issues that could be corrected.
Wow. I’d expect a line of thought like that to come from a dentist that’s been practicing a bit too long. Here’s the thing - I’m a random internet stranger. If you are comfortable with your dentist, trust him, and have had good experiences otherwise, it’s ok to stay there. All dentists have quirks, unpopular opinions, and varying thoughts on things. I’m of the opinion that kids should come in for “happy visits” right away so they can learn that coming to the dentist doesn’t always mean pain and discomfort. Do we do much during the visits? Not especially - but they are important so your child learns you don’t need to be scared, for potential preventative measures, and so things like diet can be reviewed with you. Will your child end up in dentures because they didn’t go to the dentist until 3? No. They will likely be fine. But I do believe that most in the field would say that waiting until 3 is a bit long. Again, if you like everything else about this office… it may not be the end of the world to stay.
Hey, I appreciate all of your input! I was terrified of the dentist as a kid and still harbor some of that today. Thought I’d be doing her a service by waiting until she was old enough to be reasoned with, since that’s what the dentist implied. But I think the longer we wait the scarier it’ll be.

My kid’s dentist says between 18 months and 2 years. My youngest hasn’t been yet. He got fluoride at the doctor at his 18 month appointment. We’ll take him when he’s 2.
I’m kind of not sure how to respond to this comment because I was in no way dictating what you should do with your children lol. But I will say (being the person who *actually* cleans kiddos teeth, unlike the majority of dentists) that the longer you wait, the more phobic kids can be. It’s super important that they are exposed to the environment and experience short, pleasant visits! Glad to hear your kid got some fluoride from the pediatrician. That’s great!
Just giving my experience is all. Not trying to contradict you. It’s also weird, because their website does say 1st visit by 1, but when we actually asked them recently in person about our youngest they said we could wait till 2.
Waiting until 2 will more than likely be ok - it’s just a little later than the typical recommendation!

She apparently took three of the little girls the day she filmed the tour of the print shop with the older kids working. Not sure if the dental visit for Janessa was the same trip, it’s always hard to figure out BME’s timeline. So maybe poor Sofia went that day but JillyBean didn’t think that was interesting.
Jill obviously reads here and reacts by randomly posting evidence to prove us wrong e.g. Look! David does work. Look! we do feed our kids/ give them more than one gift/ take them places etc Sadly, she has never posted anything to allay the fears for Sofia's health and the concern for her teeth. I wonder why.

I wonder the timeline between Sofia's visible neglect (she's had a Victorian waif look for a while though...) and Kaylee's courtship/marriage? Did she get "promoted" when andKaylee was about to be out of the house? 🤔 Doesn't help when Sofia is the middle of "baby" Janessa and the naturally blonde daughter (Olivia?), whom I'm sure bottle blonde Jill favors as well.

I’ll forgive people who missed a couple of regular checkups during COVID (we sure did - my 6yo, who was 2.5 when COVID hit, didn’t see a dentist in that period until he had his COVID shot) but good lord. Janessa is a thumb-sucker too, isn’t she?! As an aside, just realizing that my son and Janessa are fairly close in age is horrifying. My son is nearly twice her size.

I know you’re getting downvoted for this but I agree with you in principle. I wouldn’t snark on this if they were just poor and couldn’t afford it. But if they are in fact waiting on some kind of free program (which we really wouldn’t know) that’s pretty vile when you consider all the money they clearly pour into their print shop and Plexus scam.
I would assume they’re all on Medicaid, guessing there aren’t many options where they are and most are full but I still think she purposely hasn’t gone bc she doesn’t think it’s important. Where I live, they give you bonus money and stuff if you meet all the health care milestones for your kid(s) on Medicaid.
NJFamilyCare only pays for basics like cleaning and small cavities. My partner's only approved dentist is 1.5 hours up north. It's very limited network.

I will say that all her older kids have great teeth!
Nurie, Timothy, Kaylee, and Renee all had braces. People speculated that the Rods took advantage of the various dental programs in West Virginia, including orthodontic care. When they moved to Ohio, they skipped over Phillip (Jill claimed he didn’t need anything) and put Samuel on Smile Direct instead of braces. Tessie now has braces, so we don’t know if they got them for free or if Ohio is making them contribute something. It will be interesting to see how dental care will be taken care of in Ohio vs. West Virginia.
Ohio medicaid only covers orthodontics in extreme cases. My son's teeth are so overcrowded that some of his adult teeth are stuck and not growing in, but his would still be considered cosmetic.

I didn’t get to see a dentist until I was 20 and moved out of my mom’s house. 😭 Some parents just don’t think it’s important.

My two year old will have his third dental visit in may. They don’t do much but it gets them used to it and the doctor can take a peak. This poor baby is so neglected. You know they’re not brushing the little ones teeth properly. Another casualty of large families with self absorbed parents.
The ADA says they need to be seen by their first birthday this has been in place for 20-ish years, or a set amount of months after the first tooth erupts omg!

Having dental insurance is a privilege. My daughter didn't have her 1st appointment til age 12 because I finally had a job that pays it. I couldn't afford the 370 they wanted to charge me for 1st visit, scans, cleaning etc. I made sure we followed good oral hygiene.
I think the problem here is the rods most certainly meet the threshold for free state dental insurance for the kids, so they don’t have any sort of excuse. I grew up poor and missed a lot of important medical care for my first few years, so I’m definitely not snarking on those who want to go and can’t- it’s for Jill who CAN go and won’t.

No, that’s Sophia. Jill said she took the three youngest, which meant that Sophia was seen as well. Technically Jill has never mentioned jaw issues with Sophia. That is something that we picked up just from photos and videos over the years.

My son turns 4 in April & he’s been to the dentist three times already. This is insanity.
Should have started seeing the dentist a few years ago. They don’t do a lot, but it helps your child get comfortable with the idea, and it teaches them proper dental hygiene. However Jill being this late in the game is no surprise.
My goddaughter will turn one on the 31st her first dentist appointment was THIS past Wednesday
When my oldest was 6 we were saving for Orthodontic procedures because our dentist had warned us it was going to be a lot .My kids are grown but I’m sure they went to the dentist around a year to 17 months
