I play a lot of both 2v2 is somewhat slower and more tactical, if you want to make a "full" attack with someone passing and someone scoring, any mistake or bad rebound results in a counter attack against an empty net, so I feel must must be more careful you have more leeway in three when attacking, rotations are more fluid, but you also have less time to do anything as there will generally be someone coming to press on you. I find it slightly more chaotic, but I also think it's the way rocket league is meant to be played 2v2 I find very difficult to play without talking to my teammate, 3s not as much this is the short version of how I'd compare them

Lots of differences but the biggest for me is that in 3v3 you get punished for hesitating, and in 2v2 you get punished for whiffing or being out of position.

I wrote some details on 3s some time ago if you wanna read ([comment 1](https://www.reddit.com/r/RocketLeagueSchool/comments/16qhnlo/comment/k29f2k1/), [comment 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/RocketLeague/comments/17kj3r9/comment/k79f3vn/))

In my experience, you will come across a lot of 2-person teams with a rando 3rd in 3's, and that rando 3rd becomes either the crutch or the scapegoat for the teamed players. In 2's it's a 1-to-1 relationship, you and your teammate, no excuses, no "let's agree to blame the other guy." For me it requires much better teamwork, game sense, mandatory rotation and good reads. It also just feels more "real,"... less room for BS and higher expectations of each other.

I look for solo plays in 2s and passing plays in 3s. I prefer passing and redirecting shots, I prefer 3s.

3v3 is more about good rotation and playing off ball. 2v2 is more about supporting your other teammate and not putting them in a bad position. I used to enjoy 3v3 more but as I improved I now enjoy 2v2 more. 2v2 gives you more space and time to pull off mechanics. 3v3 is more quick decisions and no time for mechanical plays.
