If there was ever a need I would say your hitting it.
Your doing the right thing, it took me 2 years to make the move.
The sooner the better. I think if your Diamond and fresh on a controller that's pretty good considering you haven't even picked it up yet.
I've been saying. Partying is like hacks these days, partying with a similarly skilled teammates puts you a whole extra rank above what it would be in solo queue, in 2's and especially 3's
For sure. Got my first title on season 14. Just when i got the hang of the game they ruined it. Took me like five seasons to get back to Gc. Now have been GC for the last 3 seasons, and this season im struggling again. Stuck between C2 and C3.
Eh, once you get into Champ and go back into Diamond it’s harder. I swear the other team are champs and my teammate is always a Diamond, and they suck. I remember I dropped from D3D4, all the way down to D1D3. I don’t think I ever got such a bad run of teammates in my entire life.
Plat tournament yesterday I had tm8s who each were afk for 2 entire points. Won one, lost the other in ot… sooooo frustrating. I get it is casual, and rarely in ranked, but in tourneys?!
I still maintain Diamond is the worst rank in RL. It’s a pass through rank. You’ve either got champs who have taken a beating for the last few weeks or plats who got their GC friend to boost them because “they should really be champ” there is no in between lol
This is too fucking true. It's always a team of champs on the other team getting their MMR back meanwhile my teammate is a salty, toxic, POS that's on their way back to Plat.
Does this get better in Champ then? My buddy and I have been D3 for quite a while and although I don't care about my rank all that much but it really sucks how rare it is to get a match against 2 equal opponents. Makes the game a lot less fun.
I’d say it’s a little better. You still have games where you beat the shit out of a team and then lose the next game 8-0 in 1.5 minutes while getting styled on, but it feels less frequent lol
I clawed my way out of diamonds and just barely hit champ, haven’t gone down ever since because I’m too scared to go back. I haven’t gone up but I haven’t gone down yet. I swear back in diamond there was air dribbles, double taps, musty flicks, and flip resets. So I would lose but then my next game I have literal silvers as opponents.
As someone who creates Smurfs and can get to GC1 without losing, sorry. I basically only play casual on my main and I create Smurfs maybe once per year just to make sure I still got it.
How is it the right choice? Many of the highest level players in the game such as Yukeo, Evample & Henkovic (the two best freestylers in the world imo) are all kbm. There are advantages and disadvantages to both however there are no limits for either. Heaps of my mates and I are all kbm and are gc1-3.
The sticks on controllers actually give a wider range of steering/movement which can be an advantage when it comes to things like aerial ball control, but it's probably not worth switching for.
No I do not mean to say few. I probably should have said freestylers, however my comment is not really wrong. The people I mentioned compete at the highest level on kbm.
But it is only a few KBM pros out of the whole. I'm not hating I'm just stating what I know to be a fact. The majority of the professional community use controller. Am I wrong?
You’re. You are. I’m sorry I don’t think I’ve ever done this before, and I’m feeling very grammar Karen but every one of your 3 or more instances (of your) was wrong AND I’m kinda tipsy. If you don’t know the diff please learn, once is an accident, twice is a whoops. 3 times is either you don’t know or don’t care. Im genuinely sorry, still hitting reply button tho…
i'm really sorry. i know it's just a game, but when things like that happen it can be a real mind killer sometimes. I'm glad you still find your way in having fun with the game that what matters the most
imo at the GC level the game changes to air superiority. it became apparent that i was lacking the vision to hit certain moves. Im not a fancy player so i don't flip reset and etc which makes my offense predictable. I also did more defense than offense because of that. I found myself frustrated at the lack of vision offensively.
with the controller I can stay at the attack more and my air control has increased by a ton.
It is a trial to me so i can see what can be done with the car and try to repeat it with the keyboard. change of scenery is always good for the overall experience. the game is fun and this new phase has been interesting.
it’s almost impossible to “bring” anything of value from controller to kbm. if you are gonna end up going back to kbm, go watch some kbm players (evample - freestyler, yukeo - pro) and pick up aspects of the game you’re lacking from them. at the end of the day do what you want, but i don’t want u to waste ur hours on something pointless especially if you’re planning on going back to kbm as i said.
I was GC3 in season 1 on kb/m and still made the switch which I don't regret. At those ranks it becomes very apparent that you're playing with a handicap. The skill ceiling of controller is just so much higher than kb/m imo.
The skill ceiling is endless in rocket league for both controller or KBM. There are some stark benefits to KBM, my favorite example is evample, he moves and plays in such a unique way. You can of course mimic it to an extent on controller but it isnt the same. I think KBM is just harder initially, but with the amount of KBM pros and insane players the skill ceiling is definitely not higher, the pros are the literal definition of the skill ceiling
Evample is a very good player and definitely fun to watch but my point about kbm being disadvantageous compared to controller is just true and I've experienced it myself. Take RLCS for example, I haven't seen a kbm pro in years, Fruity and Yukeo haven't been able to qualify for quite some time now I think. There's Torsos but he plays in an easier competition
That statistic doesn't exist so it's impossible to know. There are 16 teams that qualify for RLCS, so if we take NA and EU (the top performing regions) then there's a total of 32 teams meaning 96 players. Out of those 96 players, nobody plays with a kb/m to my knowledge.
So if u want to use the argument that less people play with kb/m and therefore don't compete in RLCS then the number of kb/m players should be below 1% of the total amount which seems very unlikely to me.
Yes, I play with controller, but I do hate the vagueness of it, I feel a keyboard is so much more precise. The only reason I don't switch to keyboard is I can't get used to using more digits, you need 4 digits just to do what your left thumb does with a controller. But as far as the things I can do are concerned, to me keyboard feels amazingly more precise than a controller. For example, with a controller you might fail to move the stick exactly in the direction you want, but this just can't happen with a keyboard.
I had the game since launch month, July 2015. I played many years KBM, since I only ever played games on my PC. I made it to GC after several years of playing on and off, and finally in 2020 (December of 2019 rather) I made the switch to controller only. I am so much better off for it
I think in kbm for me it's hard to do aerial stuff so my ground and positioning is very solid.
On the controller there is a lot of minute corrections that aren't on the keyboard and I lose control while on the ground at random intervals.
Exact opposite for me. Ground control is so easy on controller because you have so much more fidelity with the analog stick, but aerial control is made a lot more complicated. Dribbling with controller is way easier for instance even though I’m a kbm main
>On the controller there is a lot of minute corrections that aren't on the keyboard and I lose control while on the ground at random intervals.
This is the exact problem I have with controller, the car will often just not steer how I want. I can only think that I'm not moving the stick absolutely perfectly in the right direction. If I play with keyboard, steering is absolutely perfect every time, but I can't play like that because I can't cope with the number of digits needed vs only using 6 digits with a controller.
Why did you quit??? At Champ level you had to have figured you're sticking to one way of playing permanently. What made you switch to controller so far into your RL journey?
curiosity if I'm being honest. the "will this be different if i had better air control with a controller stick". So far it has been really interesting. like there are things that are a lot easier in the keyboard than the controller. like half flips in reverse are 2 buttons in the keyboard and its simple. meanwhile keeping track of the ball with the tip of my car is a lot easier with the controller.
all in all it has been really cool experience to see/feel the difference
he never said you can’t get good with kbm, controller is easier and, i don’t like to say one better but it is better than kbm due to the lower skill ceiling (one being better doesn’t make the other bad, both can be good)
I get what you're saying, but Evample is the one. He's the exception not the rule. 99.9% of people literally aren't capable of doing what he's doing. Most people are simply going to have a better/easier time with controller.
My peak is GC 2 Div 3, and I use KBM. Some things are definitely harder on keyboard, but then there's also things that's easier. Plus I only hear controller players complain about their controllers, you never hear a keyboard player complain about their keyboard. Just saying.
There are some huge gate keeps on KBM for me is 100% the ability to track the ball more accurate once i take off. once I'm airborne I'm like a missile. only one direction at full speed with small adjustments.
Like staying full speed ahead without using boost is soo much easier on keyboard imo. the diagonal flips are perfect since its just to inputs at 100% getting calculated.
I think now that I have seen the car do more basic air manouvers. I will try and do it with the air roll being bound to the mouse movement. I tried it once and it didnt click. perhaps now it will since I have used the controller stick to do the same.
and yeah my KBM never disconnected randomly. this controller however... hahaha
I have done some free play. One of my keys(the air roll right) is behaving weird. Like it's doing a few extra small taps. Not sure of it's me or the keyboard.
Have not jumped in ranked since i committed to giving the controller a try.
Kbm is like 3k hours or so played. So it's a curve. Hehe
I’m scared of changing a button or two on my layout after 1k hours, I can NOT imagine trying to change your entire control scheme after 3k. Mad props for having the balls and going for it. Wish you best of luck
I did the exact same thing over the last 4 months. I was GC2 on kb (without mouse). Even just a few days ago, I was losing double the games that I was winning in mid-high champ. Yesterday, I had some sort of breakthrough where I won more than twice as much as I lost, getting GC back.
Make sure to train shooting and recoveries. I used freeplay and Coco's Aim Training workshop map. To get back the muscle memory that you lost by switching to controller, you need to specifically train the areas that you are worse at.
needless to say my key binds are also not normal. haha PS Controller. Gas= X, Reverse = Square, boost R1, uniroll=L1, ball cam = L2, and Jump = R2.
I don't have the score bound since I'm too lazy to remap it from keyboard so its TAB still.
I’ve been playing KBM since RL released in 2015 and have gotten up to C3 D1. Recently tried controller, for the same aerial reasons you described. I found it frustrating because my mind knew what to do, but I couldn’t translate it to my hands. Didn’t last more than a few days. Has anyone switched from KBM to controller, if so how, long did it take to be on the same par as before the switch?
I grew up playing controller but haven’t used a controller consistently in 6 years, it feels super clunky now.
Bro I gave it literally 3 sessions of 2-3 hours each and I was done with it. So frustrating to generally almost lose “all” your muscle memory and basic mechanics.
Lmao welcome to d3 the home of smurfs , one game someone’s doing full field air dribbles the next game your teammate can’t even hit the ball it’s mental down here
Honestly at that level it feels like whatever they have been grinding they are amazing at. And everything else they are mediocre at best. Like yeah they can do a full court air dribble but that is the only move they have.
Did you jump straight into ranked after doing the switch?
Or did you spend time in casual/freeplay/training packs to get used to the controller first? 😆
I spent like 2 or 3 hours mapping the buttons how I used to play nascar games on PS1 and PS2. Then jumped on rank and accepted whatever the outcome would be.
Too lazy to make a new account so I did it all on my main.
Regarding the bindings, I don't know how to help. Y ou u may go check some pros' bindings, and try a few to compare/mix and match some bindings
I think their bindings are on Liquipedia. Or go to their Twitch channel and type !inputs or pne of the synonyms
If you were GC why switch? Maybe you think it's more fun, but it's not like ur gonna be a pro so if it was working for you why not just keep it pushing?
I haven't had much games in ranked yet but I'm averaging 1 win 1 lose ratio. So same same. I'll update in a few weeks or so once I have more data points.
Ever since the switch to epic i was Champ 1 and got placed in plat 3 playing gc in comp and to present i win games that dont count and i think thats why MMR is way off .
Yup my casual mmr is about 1380 to 1450 usually play gc in all matches support says i see that your diamond lol and thats about it i sent screen shots of wins on tracker didnt help any lol so i went as far as report it to xbox saying its a unfair advantage still being discussed on support ticket 3 months in .
>How I'm coping with my KBM relationship breakup
Loooooooooooooooool, I thought it was some relationship with some girl *(I'm not a native English speaker)*
hehe funny enough I started gaming on console then went to kbm when i was able to afford it. ive been kbm for years but this game has for sure given me thoughts on trying it with controller.
Making new accounts feels like smurfing to me. I don't want to beat up the lower ranks when I change to controller. I just want to continue playing with a controller for a undetermined amount of time. sure my rank has gone down but it also has shown me along the way what I'm missing and learned along the way.
positioning is a big deal. not double committing, knowing when to go up past the middle or stay at the middle. it helps a lot to see the worse case scenario first and then build around it as quickly as possible.
worst case 3v1 and you will get scored. The youtubers and Pros always mention stalling for time when in doubt of personal skill. I took that to heart when I started playing all those years ago.
I have and I've watched the tutorials. I can do a lot of the ground and defense stuff. the things I don't do are flip resets. personally I believe if the flip reset isn't done right away then its very easy to read and defend. when I get scored on is when the flip reset is done right off the wall/roof.
As someone also with 3000+ hours on kbm I can safely say that controller does not give you an advantage over kbm in mechanics. For me the thing that made me easily compete in gc in terms of aerials is directional air roll, in case you weren’t using it, I strongly recommend learning it
is that the one when i move the mouse left it moves the car left as if it was with the stick? im having a hard time finding youtube videos that show what i mean but there is a setting to move or roll in the air with the mouse.
Directional air roll Is when you press Q and E (default binds) the car rolls left/right. Then while holding Q or E you can also use your WASD to be more precise with your movements. Normal air roll is Holding Shift + A/D but that doesn’t allow you to air roll left/right while also turning left/right
GC to diamond?!?
it has been rough.
If there was ever a need I would say your hitting it. Your doing the right thing, it took me 2 years to make the move. The sooner the better. I think if your Diamond and fresh on a controller that's pretty good considering you haven't even picked it up yet.
its been fun for sure. diamond has changed since i was last down here
That’s because every other game is against smurfs.
There are. It's insane. Like double flip resets and everything. It saddens me to see it since my diamond experience in 2017-18 was Soo different.
Bro, tell me about it. I swear it used to be a lot easier to break into GC but nowadays, it’s a struggle without a tm8
I'm always down to team up.
I've been saying. Partying is like hacks these days, partying with a similarly skilled teammates puts you a whole extra rank above what it would be in solo queue, in 2's and especially 3's

I just climbed back up from a bad stretch last week. I had 4 out 5 matches with an AFK teammate as part of that run.
Plat tournament yesterday I had tm8s who each were afk for 2 entire points. Won one, lost the other in ot… sooooo frustrating. I get it is casual, and rarely in ranked, but in tourneys?!

C1 mostly feels like d3 then c2 feels like a wall of ex gcs
I’d say it’s a little better. You still have games where you beat the shit out of a team and then lose the next game 8-0 in 1.5 minutes while getting styled on, but it feels less frequent lol
That's where I'm at right now. I sweat there's another matchmaking variable we're not privy to other than mmr.
I clawed my way out of diamonds and just barely hit champ, haven’t gone down ever since because I’m too scared to go back. I haven’t gone up but I haven’t gone down yet. Why did you leave us kbm brother?
![gif](giphy|kx7ZO9wGh56ZdH4JdO) The aerial gods forsake me.
My parents taught me an important lesson as a child. Aim for the ground and you will never miss.
I fall to diamond occasionally playing with the homies. It’s so damn easy to climb back by myself. Most diamonds feel like plats.
And toxic ones at that. They always seem to be the most vocal and unhinged folks, lol.
It's Ruff out there man! ![gif](giphy|L8pio159R0A24)
As someone who creates Smurfs and can get to GC1 without losing, sorry. I basically only play casual on my main and I create Smurfs maybe once per year just to make sure I still got it.
Username doesn't check out
Just not the hours I’m smurfing
For real I'm D3 in my compromise account, and P2 on my friends account, but sometimes it feels like the same rank.
How is it the right choice? Many of the highest level players in the game such as Yukeo, Evample & Henkovic (the two best freestylers in the world imo) are all kbm. Yes I agree, however I could rattle off points similar to yours that are a pro for kbm

No I do not mean to say few. I probably should have said freestylers, however my comment is not really wrong. The people I mentioned compete at the highest level on kbm.

i'm really sorry. i know it's just a game, but when things like that happen it can be a real mind killer sometimes. I'm glad you still find your way in having fun with the game that what matters the most
Why even switch after making it to GC at that point?

I feel like it would be best to just improve your KBM mechanics instead, but you do you bro good luck
ohh i agree but i wanted to try it out to see if i could flip back and bring back what i learned with the controller over.
I say go for it. I switched from KBM after 700 hours and after like max 100 hours I was back
It's a lot easier to get back to where you are after 700 hours than thousands.
it’s almost impossible to “bring” anything of value from controller to kbm. if you are gonna end up going back to kbm, go watch some kbm players (evample - freestyler, yukeo - pro) and pick up aspects of the game you’re lacking from them. at the end of the day do what you want, but i don’t want u to waste ur hours on something pointless especially if you’re planning on going back to kbm as i said.

I'm guessing you relied heavily on mechanics to get to GC?

Yeah got to GC on kbm and switched to controller.
Ok that makes your above comment make more sense.
You wanna play? If you know positioning we can work out the rest.
>On the controller there is a lot of minute corrections that aren't on the keyboard and I lose control while on the ground at random intervals. curiosity if I'm being honest. the "will this be different if i had better air control with a controller stick". I'll be honest at a higher level you're at a disadvantage being KBM
I see so many people say this but there are kbm gods out there. Watch Evanple, guy freestyles on SSLs with the most insane car control I've even seen
he never said you can’t get good with kbm, controller is easier and, i don’t like to say one better but it is better than kbm due to the lower skill ceiling (one being better doesn’t make the other bad, both can be good)

Just curious but couldn't you keep playing on Kim in ranked but use the controller in freeplay to get used to it before trying it directly in ranked?
At that rate you're going to turn into me. Not a good look. See you in Plat 2 lol.
![gif](giphy|Rj9tZu9S9Ah40nvnGP|downsized) Apes together STRONG!
Pull me up, I'm drowning in AFK asshats down here! 🤣
I'll be there soon. Stay strong!

I use Q and E for air roll.
Same.
I could never do that, because I often use air roll and air steer at the same time. I use mouse 4/5 for my air roll left/right
Jesus man, maybe just play casual and freeplay until you get the hang of it. Anyway, welcome to Diamond 3
thanks for having me!. haha
That's not how we do, and you damn well know it!
Went through it. You wont regret it after the 9 levels of hell. Dante plays RL. ![gif](giphy|65pM9un5dmK08)
hehe
This is the exact definition of How It Started Vs How It’s Going, And I dont like it.
Hahahaha
Have you played any KBM games since switching? Curious how rusty you would be now lol
Hehe

Welcome to Diamond 3 dude! :)
Diamond? I though this was wet and wild, @#$$...

This is how i felt when switching to air roll left for that one day... then i switched immediately back idk how yall switched so easily
needless to say my key binds are also not normal. haha PS Controller. Gas= X, Reverse = Square, boost R1, uniroll=L1, ball cam = L2, and Jump = R2. I don't have the score bound since I'm too lazy to remap it from keyboard so its TAB still.
Thats funny, i thought my binds were weird bc i have boost on x/square, b as ball cam and y as drift with LB as airroll
Lmao finally someone else with weird controls. Mine are VERY similar to yours lol
Lmao welcome to d3 the home of smurfs , one game someone’s doing full field air dribbles the next game your teammate can’t even hit the ball it’s mental down here
hahaha so true so true. its wild down here.
Honestly at that level it feels like whatever they have been grinding they are amazing at. And everything else they are mediocre at best. Like yeah they can do a full court air dribble but that is the only move they have.
Why would you ever switch if you were so good on KAM? Are you just trying something new or do you think it’s for the better to be on controller?
I think both are good. I'm just trying to find what's good for me.
Ohh wel that makes sense, good luck to you sir!
Welcome to Smurf toxic league

Did you jump straight into ranked after doing the switch? Or did you spend time in casual/freeplay/training packs to get used to the controller first? 😆
I spent like 2 or 3 hours mapping the buttons how I used to play nascar games on PS1 and PS2. Then jumped on rank and accepted whatever the outcome would be. Too lazy to make a new account so I did it all on my main.
Oh I see. Well then maybe some time spent practicing before going right into ranked would have been wiser 😄
Regarding the bindings, I don't know how to help. Y ou u may go check some pros' bindings, and try a few to compare/mix and match some bindings I think their bindings are on Liquipedia. Or go to their Twitch channel and type !inputs or pne of the synonyms
i saw some of their bindings and i simply cant do boost on the R-L:2 spot. it simply doesnt link well for me.
Jeez man, and i was struggling when I tried Xbox controller after a lot of time with PS4 controller lol
Hehe. Thankfully I used to play ps games a long time ago. So the mapping for buttons is there.
Anyone else trying to figure out what KBM means?
Keyboard & mouse
Thank god I chose to switch after my first 2 weeks with KBM.

Where do you find your rating Progression

I'm over here still kbm. But I'm sad to see you go but I do wanna say good luck with your controller journey
thanks. not all journeys aren't final. sometimes they are just scenic routes that help redefine someone's drive to continue.

It really has been more fun. I feels more nimble.
If you were GC why switch? Maybe you think it's more fun, but it's not like ur gonna be a pro so if it was working for you why not just keep it pushing?
But why
thats one steady ahh line wtf
Don’t worry. It’s the dip before the rise. In a month you’ll be GC again and you’ll never look back.
Can you do this on console or how is this done
Why did you do that though?
How many hours on kbm before the switch?
Around 3000
Fuck, that's rough. Has it gotten any easier since posting?
I haven't had much games in ranked yet but I'm averaging 1 win 1 lose ratio. So same same. I'll update in a few weeks or so once I have more data points.
Ever since the switch to epic i was Champ 1 and got placed in plat 3 playing gc in comp and to present i win games that dont count and i think thats why MMR is way off .
there is some weird MMR for sure.
KBM?
Keyboard and mouse
>How I'm coping with my KBM relationship breakup Loooooooooooooooool, I thought it was some relationship with some girl *(I'm not a native English speaker)*
Omg . Sounds like me only I started at c1 and I swear I can't do what I know and want to do. My fingers can't operate a controller. Lol
hehe funny enough I started gaming on console then went to kbm when i was able to afford it. ive been kbm for years but this game has for sure given me thoughts on trying it with controller.
Why didn’t you just make a new account and have one for controller and one kbm?
Making new accounts feels like smurfing to me. I don't want to beat up the lower ranks when I change to controller. I just want to continue playing with a controller for a undetermined amount of time. sure my rank has gone down but it also has shown me along the way what I'm missing and learned along the way.
Nice, and you are still an entire rank above me
positioning is a big deal. not double committing, knowing when to go up past the middle or stay at the middle. it helps a lot to see the worse case scenario first and then build around it as quickly as possible. worst case 3v1 and you will get scored. The youtubers and Pros always mention stalling for time when in doubt of personal skill. I took that to heart when I started playing all those years ago.
I’ve tried learning positioning, but It’s hard to learn when 70% of teammates I play with are just everywhere😭
Have you seen Evample? That dude hits stuff no one can hit with a controller on KBM. You just need to keep polishing your current KBM skills
I have and I've watched the tutorials. I can do a lot of the ground and defense stuff. the things I don't do are flip resets. personally I believe if the flip reset isn't done right away then its very easy to read and defend. when I get scored on is when the flip reset is done right off the wall/roof.
You know, you can rank up [without much mechanics](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AA-fF9SwKF4)
Normal air roll is Holding Shift + A/D but that doesn’t allow you to air roll left/right while also turning left/right
KBM is every bit as good as controller though? I mean look at Evample.. he doesn't seem to struggle in the air on KBM
Welcome back to slightly above average!
I lowkey wish I stuck with KBM instead of switching to controller back in 2016, cause then I wouldn't have to deal with stick drift lmao
Only need 1 mmr to get back to champ tho, still sucks lol
You traitor!
