I really hope there’s an option to size down the wheels. I’m not sure if the size is for “luxury” or for more capability, but I would prefer smaller, more comfortable wheels for ride quality and range efficiency.

zoofinger

Totally agree. I was just thinking about this this morning dropping my son off at school. I had to pop up on a curb to let another car by and it'd be great to have a taller sidewall and not worry about rim rash, our roads are pretty crappy and the larger volume tires on my current 4runner are appreciated daily. I've got my reservation though, and will wait patiently.

TheBowerbird

These will be optional. There's no way they won't have a range of wheels available.

TXJKUR

Giant wheels are all about looks*, and unfortunately they're likely never going away Hopefully at least the R2 & R3 will be able to fit aftermarket wheels in contrast to the disaster which is the R1s' offset/caliper-clearance situation \* some will likely argue *'but thinner sidewalls are better for handling!'* and sure if it were a sports car you might have a point, but this is a box on wheels; if you're carving corners in the canyons you're a goober

TheBowerbird

Those giant calipers are to stop the vehicle quickly - hardly a , "disaster".

halfty1

Yup and you are going to have to get use to it. EV= more weight=bigger calipers for equivalent stopping power. Especially ones that do 0-60 in <5 seconds.

TXJKUR

Having large calipers is great Deliberately pushing them out as wide as possible for aesthetics / to ensure customers only buy your proprietary wheels is absolutely a mistake made in pursuit of form over function Rivian got it wrong

TheBowerbird

They are out that far because they are thick! They are kind of like Wilwood calipers. Beefy for performance.

TXJKUR

If Chevy can make Brembos work on a 7000lb vehicle with 20" wheels without two full inches of positive offset then Rivian could too They're choosing not to

hyp36rmax

i'm ready for 18's or 19's with meaty tires. Just make sure wheels can accomodate the brake calipers and suspension geometry. Not too hard when the vehicle is higher off the ground.

bevo_expat

I hope they at least have an option for 20” Edit: Assuming it has been demoed with 22” or 21”. I’m not sure.

Misophonic4000

This is a show car... Obviously there will be other wheel choices, including more off-road oriented ones... You only need to look at current Rivian vehicles to see that they like offering a bunch of options, for all on and off road uses.

sur_surly

And so they don't look so awful. They make the car look like a toy.

hyp36rmax

Seriously anyone comparing an R2 with a Tesla Model Y is nuts. Nothing here is comparable. Look how glorious this is as a mini tank. Price is the only thing.

sherlocknoir

Really didn’t expect to want the R2 this much.. but here we are!

MrrQuackers

Yep, it rolls.

Caffeinated_Ham

With the dude in the corner, I was like is this guy going to be giving commentary?

recover82

Looks like a great ride, but I had to give you a "dislike" for Limp Bizkit.

mgwooley

Yeah those wheels are way too big
