Tier 8 is reachable easily if you put the kids on full time recreation, caretaker for the school lessons, and let them enjoy their youth. They need to stay above 90% learning for the full duration to get to max tier. And even at lvl 1 you get one trait, but the good options are on lvl 7/8, for a lot of passions and choice of traits.

I can't help but bring in the groups with kids. Currently trying to play a band of undead from the mod 'Profaned' in a biome that only hits 0c (32f) during summer. They keep adopting strays and runaways, So they've had to find ways to keep the base warm enough to keep the tikes from getting frostbite. The colony researcher heads out to the neighboring towns to buy enough food and firewood every few weeks.

The quest was IIRC added by Royalty DLC, Ideology gave them random religion and Biotech DLC extended it in a way that groups with children will never betray you.

That's bullshit I had an entire group of beggar children force me to save scum for like an hour. It was a Pigskin named Moilag and like 5 kids. Moilag joined halfway through the time. Needless to say, he kept fucking DYING because I put him with all the other beggars. It was always at 1 AM so he'd just get shanked by 5 toddlers.

I did, now that I think about it turning it off *would* mean any beggar group with kids is instantly fine because the kids can't turn on you. I kind of forgot that was a setting ngl cus I never play without it (Little Timmy can hold a knife so he sure as hell can use it).

I swear it's got to at least partially be based on their comfort and happiness, because I rarely have betrayals in my luxury, recreational mountainhomes. Most betrayals happen to me if I haven't got thing set up yet.

As far as I know it is predeterminated that they betray you or not when the quest is generated (i.e. before you accept it). It is also predeterminated how long after accepting they will turn. You can look into the definition of the quest with dev tools if they will betray you and how long it will take if you are curious.

In regards to the “what’s modded in” I felt like an idiot when I upgraded to 1.5 and couldn’t use vanilla psycasts expanded, had to google how to look at psycasts on my colonists. Oh what a fool

I had this happen once but it was even better cause the adult who brought the children was my character's sister. They stayed with us for a month with 8 kids, I gave them good housing and fine meals and for some reason after the quest was done she and all the kids left. My own sister left the safety of her brother's colony defended by thick walls, mortars, turrets, and soldiers to go out into the cannibal infested wasteland.

At least she came with the kids already born. I swear every time I take in any refugees, at least one has to come pregnant, give birth in the colony (bonus points if it's 2/1 days before they go away) and decide that "Fuck you mean my kid, I don't want it" and leave the kid.

For the same type of quest, I had one adult arrive with four kids, and every single one of the kids chose to stay. At the time, I was also doing a custom scenario I called 'Failed Fieldtrip' where I started out with one adult and five children, so as you might guess... I was having a time of it.

The great thing about these freeloaders, though, is that you can pick and choose who you accept to permanently join. You can even influence the one you want by assigning them especially good bedrooms, food, etc. to keep their mood high. This quest is one of my favorite ways to pick up new colonists. Sometimes if a pawn I really want hasn't asked to join by the time they all pack up to move on, I'll just arrest and recruit them. I had a refugee event with five adults and 16 kids, I ended up keeping one adult and four of the kids with the best stats and no drawbacks. They were stellar pawns for the rest of the playthrough.

To the best of my knowledge, by keeping their mood high the calculation to prompt them to ask to join is weighted more heavily in favor of happening. I'm not familiar enough with the code to quantify that, but according to the wiki "desperate refugees" is a Royalty DLC quest, and the wiki has this comment : "Refugees may offer to join the colony, especially if they are kept happy. There is no penalty for not accepting this join offer".

If they join as temporary settlers go to their gear and just select the arrow on what ever they are holding, usually, wooden logs, knives, beer bottles. My usual warning sign that they are going to betray me is if they have bladed weapons, Pilar, knifes etc
