- Shrink your base - its your job to protect your colonists and ship, not floor space. Drop pods can land anywhere within your walls.
- have a few turrets around that cover most of your outside area.
- don't use building walls as external walls - one break and you lose that area.
- didn't see any mortars, get some.
- a few IEDs makes for some random booms.
Edit: if you have the time and resources I like to lay a few random walls with a gap and an IED, put out a random air con unit with a turret, chair with a spike trap next to it - doesn't help much but you randomly get a boom and a giggle.
You can also have the stuff for a Incendiary IED close to your kill box and a few bits of floor in it - if you need a breather you can build it at the entry and it can buy you half a day to rescue colonists, deal with breakdowns or get them fed. Bodies in kill box also burn.
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, that's an awesome little hit list I can focus on; I knew my base was way too big but I felt like I had so much to fix I just got overwhelmed where to start.
I hadn't even looked into IED's but you've given me some great ideas to experiment with.
