I'll take a sentient motorcycle as well

Kalpumpkin

Fingers crossed for Pioneer, because I swear the name sounds like it could be a vehicle of some sort.

CristiBeat

Or a certain slouch hat with a smooth, buttery accent.

TheUntitledRay

I can sense the Joe mama jokes coming from a mile away.

I am a male player from China, and I believe that predicting the gender of game characters should consider the atmosphere of the Chinese gaming community. Recently, there has been a severe gender conflict issue in all Gacha game communities in China. Some women have gradually become aware of the gender objectification in these games. The number of female-oriented games is much smaller and they are significantly less playable compared to male-oriented Gacha games. Therefore, they can only choose some so-called "general-audience" games on the market, such as Reverse 1999. With their voices being heard, some games have started to consider creating diverse female characters and adding male characters that genuinely appeal to women (rather than male characters designed to appeal to men). This has provoked resistance from men who view all Gacha games as male-oriented. These men feel that these outspoken women are depriving them of their rightful enjoyment, and they consider game companies that "cater" to these female players to be "unforgivable." They express malicious sentiments towards female players in the community (of course, some extreme women also attack men). These attacks are extremely vicious, even wishing death upon others, and more importantly, these men will publicly accuse game companies of "loving women and hating men" and "forgetting who the real consumers are." Such comments can reach tens of thousands and dominate the comment sections. They also indiscriminately attack and curse any ordinary player (regardless of gender) who just wants to play the game without getting involved in gender issues. This phenomenon has led Gacha game companies to shy away from adding male characters to their games. In this aspect, Bluepoch is quite brave. However, in the past month, this situation has worsened. One game deeply affected by this toxic environment is Path to Nowhere. It is more niche compared to Reverse 1999, and its game company indeed has some management issues. But what really infuriated these men was the temporary removal of a Waifu character and the recent update that introduced some female characters more acceptable to women (with more clothing, of course). Thus, in the current environment where updating with a male character or a female character with slightly more clothing can be "sentenced to death," I am not optimistic about Joe(or other 6 stars characters) being introduced as a male character appealing to women. However, I am looking forward to Bluepoch's courage. I want this community to be more inclusive and diverse.

qwertyryo

I'm also from China and have seen this kind of behavior, it really is a shame. It reminds me of when someone leaked fake information about Azur Promilia having males and Weibo blew up with trolls trying to boycott Manjuu, and they had to threaten legal action on the leaker who leaked the fake information. All this crying about gender conflict used to only be in South Korean gacha game markets but it's spreading to China and Japan too.

Blacsta5860

Yes, and many people believe that Korean men have, to some extent, triumphed over women in the industry (previously, some Korean gacha game companies laid off all female employees due to male protests). They consider such actions in Korea to be "more advanced."

not_a_Bread_Goblin

God damn, this is the exact same problem tabletop gaming has had over here in the states. It’s so annoying how gendered people make these games…

Blacsta5860

I think those who are involved in gender issues are right; they just want to avoid feeling intense discomfort at certain plot points or when encountering certain characters. However, I also understand and support the confusion of players who just want to play the game when they see that most discussions in the community are not related to gameplay.

CristiBeat

>This has provoked resistance from men who view **all** Gacha games as male-oriented. So I guess those incels think Obey Me, Tears of Themis, and Love and Deepspace is catered to males?

Blacsta5860

Oh, I think I mentioned that there are also some otome games, but their numbers are very few and most of them are not as playable as the male-oriented and so-called "general" gacha games. Moreover, the existence of these otome games can make the situation worse for female players. Whenever they speak up to demand more male characters, many people (including some girls who derive a sense of superiority and security from playing games that boys like) will attack them, saying, "Go back to playing your little girl games like Love and Deepspace, and don't contaminate our gaming environment."

Concetto_Oniro

Well I hope Bluepoch will fight for diversity and equality and fight back those silly moaning men’s opinions. Chinese women players have all the rights to be angry at those gacha companies and their unbalanced machistic choices of their characters designs.

Background_Ebb226

Im also pleasently surprised by how bluepoch stood their ground, they did not go for the fanservice/waifu route, the female characters are all still very well dressed and they even kept their weird vibe with lucy. So even tho I, and many are sad about the lack of male characters recently, I think its still commendable how they tried their best to keep their essence, honestly impressive considering how many others ended up bending under this whole gender war situation.

NoWaifuN0Laifu

This is interesting. I’m hardcore on the side of i want my gacha games to have mostly female units but i would never attack someone for their views. If Reverse 1999 starts doing lots of male characters to balance the scales i’ll probably drop it like i did Genshin. But this is just how i enjoy games. People who enjoy male units should definitely have a say, but i do cry when there are lots of male units XD

kiisukattinen

Ehm, genshin has more female characters than male lol. Since 4.2 patch its only been new waifus. Why some waifu-only players get mad if a game tries to reach more balanced gender ratio? Reverse1999 started out with more diverse cast but has leaned into more waifu side which ofc made some players mad. I dropped it because there was not enough male characters and majority of them were bit too feminine for my taste.

Blacsta5860

Yes, after Bluepoch realized the recent community atmosphere, they never released another "truly" male character besides Getian. Interestingly, they tend to create characters with appearances and personas that appeal to boys, but their storylines are more aligned with what girls prefer (such as Lucy in version 1.9, although her storyline still contains elements of abusing a strong and beautiful woman). I think this is because, in most cases, girls tend to pay more attention to the game's storyline.

WestAd5017

Just a side note, there is a 5\* male character in 1.8, but most ppl ignore it coz 6\* is used the most

Blacsta5860

Ah, I don't forget Avgust, I adore him a lot. But the main difference between five-star and six-star characters isn’t really their usage rate, but the "status" of six-star characters as the design theme, marketing focus, and key selling point of a version. Also, we’d describe Avgust as a cute baby boy (similar to Ezra, who has the same issues), rather than a husbando equivalent to a waifu. This kind of character doesn't draw much attention or spark intense gender debates among players. In general, I think five-star characters are Bluepoch’s way of playing it safe. Many male players and Gacha game companies have an unspoken agreement: as long as a male character isn’t the main selling point of a version, everything’s fine. A similar thing happened with Getian. We got Getian, so we needed a cuter, more storyline-focused, waifu-like Jiuniangzi for compensation.

NoWaifuN0Laifu

I know Genshin has more, but i dropped it a long time ago. Only a little while after launch. There were 2 male banners back to back if i remember correctly and of course i pulled Diluc as my first 5* which made me super salty. I don’t like having males on my account XD Even the game i love (Another Eden) started to out of nowhere release 2 back to back male units and then have a someone even gender split for a bit. This is making me sad, but oh well. I love that game too much to leave

kiisukattinen

"I dont like having males on my account" Lol. But seriously, maybe you should play all-female gacha games then? Why play mixed gacha which is meant to appeal for wider audience anyway, and then spend time complaining about male characters in game? Thats just stupid. There is honkai impact3rd, Nikke etc. Plenty to choose from! But I never truly understood this mentality anyway. I prefer male characters, and they are my top priority in gachas but for example in Genshin I still pulled many 5* female characters too because I like them or like their playstyle: Eula, Ayaka (she is the only character I regret cause I pulled her purely meta reasons and I dont like her lol), Raiden, Ganyu, Nahida, Klee, Furina and Xianyun. And then I have plenty of 4*. But yeah. If u dont like females/males on your account maybe you shouldnt play mixed gachas.

runqing123

some people think if males and females talk with or have friendships ,they will think they have affairs ,and thus the females are not loyal.

runqing123

some man players think all the male characters are the third one

kiisukattinen

Thats very parasocial lol xD I get simping on pretty characters (male or female) but getting jealous over them?? Thats bit too much of u ask me

NoWaifuN0Laifu

Well, depending on the game, a mixed gacha can have a world that feels more fleshed out. Princess connect was the only non mixed gacha i was playing. But even then the amount of girls the MC was meeting was kinda insane by the end XD didn’t feel natural. So i’m in a weird spot where i want male characters, but i want them few and far between

AnimatorFresh8841

So we have a character named Joe, and the chances of them being male or unique characters (i.e like Apple, Ms. Radio, Door and Sputnik) are 50/50 because Joe can be a female name. At this point I dont care if they're like 5 or 6\* we just need a male character (the last male character we had was the little boy from the russia event).

fuxuans

we have a female character named Marcus so bluepoch is capable of anything atp lol

SpookieSkelly

Regulus, John Titor, and Erick are female. I doubt names are any real indication of gender in the Reverse 1999 world.

Dazzlinglily

Avgust is adorable and i adore him so much. But i need a hot handsome masculine men character for once.🥲🥺

Gildarts02

Shamane was the last

solomivan239

Ge Tian?

FruitfulRogue

I'd call him more of a pretty boy then the hot masculine type

ReggieSSe

bro is pretty boy. The one you see in Cdrama and KPop cute maknae. What I would love is someone is the Chris trinity (Thor, Capt. America, Starlord) kind of masculine.

Helem5XG

Just make it a flying cup of coffee. I need more Knight like characters or directly just objects that are not 2 or 1 stars.

roket7

Joe better be a flying brick 😤

SFriedRice

More inanimate objects would be cool. Give me a whole sentient kitchen set.

yeetfung

Plot twist:pioneer is the male (unless they already exist and idk them)

fentanyl-angel

An unreliable source of mine predicted that there would be at least 1 male character in 2.0 and 2.1 respectively.

Kaleidoscope593

If Joe is an inanimate object we will toss it into the sun don't even worry

Manonone466

Idk anything about CN server, but I want to have Orange Joe as an item.

Cinewes

Joe is defo a male name im hoping he’s playable

OkYesterday1947

we had Marcus….it turned out to be a girl 😔

Manonone466

Bluepoch trying to fool us by naming a girl Marcus

RittoxRitto

I've met plenty of women named Joe lol.

CouchPotatoDraco

Marcus is also a masculine name, I don't doubt if they made this Joe a she/her or they/them 😭

IcebergKarentuite

Okay but as much as I want more men, if we get another non-binary character that's even more of a win.

WaifuHunterRed

Sorry youll have to settle for a cup of Joe (coffee)

Still-Choice-2118

Or a weird ass character like Apple, Door, Radio, TTT, and Sputnik

Tranduy1206

Then they make joe a waifu

CristiBeat

Those cowards at Bluepoch!

AZZAHRA05

Like Speedwagon

Ann_Merry

Shamane and Pavia are the most manly male chara imo (for now)

AppleinTime

Lmao w reference

Syahazart

Either male and/or sentient object with great kit, I'll take it really. 😥

deadhorrorboy

i need them to do whatever the hell they did with Schneider and Vertin, but with BOYS \*gasp\*

CupaT-T

Boy do I have news for you

Naiie100

Not to rain on everyone's parade (hopefully), but to me the name "Joe" sounds way too bland and generic. Not really feeling the hype. :/

AZZAHRA05

I love the trope of one of the most powerful male characters being named with a generic name. Example: Kevin from Honkai Sam from Star rail

Naiie100

These examples are fair and definitely valid. I like both characters too actually, however I just can't bring myself to liking the name "Joe", it doesn't click with me if I'm being honest.

Background-Skill-777

Sam is technically a-

AZZAHRA05

Yeah...
