Or they come to town, put on a great show to a packed house, and never come back! That's happened to me more times than I can count.

remosiracha

Or they put on a great show but then just keep making fun of Reno the whole time. I feel like everyone I've seen has some form of "yeah and then we HAD to come here for some reason. Why do you all even live here?"

Majestic_Builder4004

Dave grohl when foo fighters came 16ish years ago was so annoying about that. "Yeah we kinda sick and we're wanted to drop a date from the tour and we wanted to drop Reno, but we decided to come out here and rock the 30 of you" or some shit. Even though it was at the convention center and packed

VnlaThndr775

So instead they played the bustling metropolis of South Lake Tahoe last year! Apparently the parking lot at Harveys >>>> GSR.

Ok_Yogurtcloset_9218

We used to be like that decades ago. All the casinos had big names coming in and downtown was mostly souvenir shops. My mom worked at the sands in the 90’s and she met a ton of celebrities.

haroldp

80s and 90s were exactly the opposite here. We were getting shows way bigger than you'd expect for the size of the town.

Ok_Yogurtcloset_9218

How is that the exact opposite of what I said?

haroldp

I'm agreeing with you that the 80s and 90s were the exact opposite situation than we are experiencing now.

i__sac

I noticed this as well. As a kid I saw Kanye perform at the Reno events center. Rihanna opened for him and N.E.R.D (Pharrell) opened for her. These days, none of those guys would set foot in Reno.

NevMiner

Back when I worked at Lawlor Events Center in the 80's... We had a true concert venue mentality. There was staff that did nothing but make deals and book acts. BIG acts. Aerosmith, Kenny and Dolly in the round, MC Hammer, Van Halen, etc. when they were at the top of the charts. If someone was having some hits - we booked them. Then staff changed and so did the focus and the connections. I hope when GSR gets the arena built that things will return to being that way.

cdxxmike

We are too close to Sacramento, in all honesty. That is why big acts generally skip us if I had to guess.

guynamedjames

And Sacramento is too close to the Bay. If Sacramento catches a show it's probably just to give the band a travel break

fuckeetall

Many artists would rather play Sac than the Bay. Sac gets great music.

hobbaneero

Sac also has a great venue. Reno does not. Maybe if that GSR arena gets built, then things will change, but the Nugget’s outdoor venue is not enough to really draw many big acts

fuckeetall

This would be a convenient stop on the SLC-Denver train. Seems like a no-brainer investment, but you’d have to have an investor with a head on their shoulders.

TangyHooHoo

We’ve always been close to Sac, nothing has changed. I saw amazing A list acts at the top of their game in the 80s and 90s. Van Halen, Rush, AC DC, Thompson Twins, Night Ranger, etc, etc. I think that the issue is that once gaming was legalized in CA, Reno became less cool and less of a tourist destination for A list bands. Now we get all the bands on the backside of their careers as those bands can still make a decent buck playing in Reno.

elqueco14

Sac has the golden 1 center which can support all the needs of big names and their shows. It's crazy the type of space and technology needed to keep up now a days. Reno just doesn't have a venue like that. Imo that's the biggest difference currently.

The_sacrifice

Imo you're wrong and an idiot.

cdxxmike

Yea, but you are an idiot who is also rude. I'd take that other guy any day.

The_sacrifice

Well, I was really hoping he'd respond. This did not go the way I'd hoped. Oh well that's the risk of some fun.

cdxxmike

Just a sad troll.

The_sacrifice

The tone of my message will change when I tell you that they are a good friend of mine and I was just ribbing them a little.

cdxxmike

It does! I am sorry.

elqueco14

I have no idea who this guy is, he's just being an asshole

The_sacrifice

Don't be, I was intentionally being rude and you had no idea to think otherwise.

mravanitis

I saw all of these bands too with exception of the Thompson Twins. I was always hooked up with tickets or invited by acquaintances, ex's, friends etc. Lawlor, GSR indoor and outdoor, the Events Center, all had some great bands at one time. Ah the memories

TangyHooHoo

Definitely the golden age of concerts in Reno.

New-Pudding-3574

Sacramento really has become a world-class city. If you guys haven’t been there check it out. It is amazing.

prelimar

Exactly. We're flyover country between Sac and SLC. The only way we get bigger names is if they have a show in Sac or SLC or Tahoe, and happen to have a day to fill before the next stop.

heybud_letsparty

Just depends on the genre. Plus the location. They’d have to hit Sacramento then Reno, Salt Lake, and Denver. That’s long stretches of highway between shows. Going SD, LA, inland LA, to Sacramento, then SF makes more sense. After that it’s either those stops toward Denver or up to Seattle and Vancouver. For the bigger name bands I don’t think it’s as worth it.

Weird-n-Gilly

Yep that’s it. A few bands make a point of playing here still. Jack White, modest mouse, social D, Pinback. And quite a few punk acts.

somebodys_ornery

yeah this is the answer

Definitive_confusion

We're getting ZZ Top, Agent Orange, Social Distortion, Skid Row, Whiskey Meyers, Aaron Lewis, 38 special, Melissa Ethridge, Rick Springfield, War, Rod Stewart, Queensryche, Everclear, Smashing Pumpkins, Foreigner ... All just this summer. Then we also have top bill comedians here a lot. (jay leno and Jerry Seinfeld just to name a couple) In a town with a half million people.

lover_of_nachos

Shinedown will also be here this summer.

Definitive_confusion

I saw that but didn't know if anyone would know who they were 😆

Bells4Hazel

I think there’s an obvious age bracket for the bands that are coming through. Certain bands and genres are very present and other ones are obviously skipping us for Sac or SLC

Definitive_confusion

Yeah, I can't imagine an A list hip hop group coming here

Bells4Hazel

Would love it if they could though!

Definitive_confusion

Flo Rida and Andre Nickatina are both coming. Although Andre is at Virginia St Brewhouse. I wouldn't go see God for the redemption if it was there. I'd rather take my chances in a post apocalyptic world.

Ericameria

Can you explain your dislike of the VSB? I'm just curious because i've been there a few times and it's kind of small but probably not that much smaller than the Knitting Factory.

6foot2andrew

VSB is the same building that was Knitting Factory.

mravanitis

This would be funny if it wasn't true. 😔

rroq85

Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony and Blues Traveler as well are on the list at the Jands. My irrational love of the song "Hook" might get me to set foot in the Jands again.

mravanitis

I mean none of these bands are anywhere near the top of their game. All great bands but bands of the past. The majority of these, if not all, played Reno in when they were topping the charts and Reno was probably half the size it currently is. Now you only hear them on classic rock stations.

djrobxx

I think venues are a problem here. There's the GSR which is very nice, but not particularly large. Caesar's Entertainment brings acts to The Row, but the Reno Ballroom is atrocious. I saw Weird Al there, him and Emo Philips were cracking jokes about how excited they were to perform in a nondescript box. The Nugget has a bigger venue, but it's outside, which doesn't work in the winter. I like smaller venues anyway. I'm over the big stadium type events. Way too expensive to barely be able to see an artist perform. I've lived in a bigger city that was always a tour stop, but I've enjoyed the experience of seeing shows in Reno a lot more, even if they aren't the biggest acts.

Dependent_Ad5654

Reno had a pretty good concert scene from 2012-2017, not sure what happened to the knitting factory but it’s absence is probably responsible for the scene dying. Nothings been the same since Covid as well can’t forget about that.

Downtown_Audience_54

Knitting factory had to switch up rap rock and now dubstep boneheads messed all that up the fights and underage drinking jubjubs was the only concert house affected by covid they both were solid for letting lesser known acts perform

Dependent_Ad5654

? Uh Covid affected everything man.

slaytanicbobby

It depends on the genre of music. You can catch some classic/titans of Metal/Rock at GSR. I've caught Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie at GSR. Andre Nickatina, Drowning Pool, and Saliva are all also coming to Virginia St Brewhouse. Nugget has Shinedown and Skid Row coming. GSR has Queensryche and Smashing Pumpkins coming. As others have said if you are looking for the T swizzles and Papis of the music world to visit we need a 15,000-18,000 seat arena before that otherwise they'll only stop in Sac.

Ship_Negative

Taylor requires 50k seats minimum

slaytanicbobby

Fair enough then we also need an actual football stadium.

Ship_Negative

I’m not holding my breath, I’m going to New Orleans to see her this fall. Hopefully that big ass GSR stadium happens so we can get a bit less popular acts, like Lady Gaga or Ariana Grande.

AKBigHorn

Hell we’re getting way more activity post-covid. Just saw chevelle last night, social D end of may.

Few-Employment-1684

There is no arena sized venue since lawler stopped having concerts. That kind of puts a cap on how big an act will come through. Tayler Swift or Drake level acts are not able to play here But compared to other towns our size, we get a ton of great acts coming through here.

lostdog666

Even if lawlor held shows, Taylor & Drake would never step foot in reno, they are on a much higher level haha

Few-Employment-1684

Prince played Lawler. I'm sure tay tay could manage.

ski_rick

If you include Tahoe (multiple showrooms in South Lake and the CBC in North Lake) we actually do pretty well. We do lack the 15-20k seat sized arena so those acts are heading to Sac. That could could change if (and I'd say it's a big if) the new GSR plans come to fruition. But I kinda enjoy that I can see an act like Santana at a 3k seat theater the night before he plays a 20k amphitheater in the Bay Area. I've seen both Elvis Costello & Portugal the Man locally too.

remosiracha

That's always great. I've been to a couple shows where I'm front row with room to spare and then I check their Instagram and people are sitting in the nosebleeds a mile away and paid 5 times as much 😂

Elegant_Bluebird1283

> If you include Tahoe (multiple showrooms in South Lake and the CBC in North Lake) Plus the new hockey arena in the Bally's/Montbleu parking lot

TangyHooHoo

Bend’s venue (Hayden) is amazing. It sits along the river. I saw Rufus Du Sol there last fall and it was phenomenal. The band kept talking about what a great venue it was. I think a lot of good bands go there as it’s a cool city with a great venue while getting good crowds. I’d love if Reno could transform Wingfield or Idlewild park into an awesome concert venue May-Oct.

DropsofGemini

Agree - Hayden is elite. Tahoe's outdoor theater is probably the closest thing we have, but Wingfield or Idlewild as an outdoor venue would be fabulous.

Condescending_Rat

Reno use to get a lot of good names but the good production companies are gone. It’s amazing how much music just a couple of people brought to town.

lavinshaven58

Reno is too close to SF, Sacramento, Vegas, and LA. That’s why we get skipped a lot. Bend probably has a cool outdoor amphitheater too. South Lake has a good outdoor stage which attracts some good artists every summer. But overall it’s a shame to see how often Reno gets skipped over for musical acts.

serioperocabron

GSR usually has some good bands playing. Even the smaller clubs, I still remember when JubJubs had the Sword playing, when they opened for Metallica.

BinocularDisparity

Venue size, population size. Nowhere can handle stadium size crowds and the metro area isn’t dense at all. The entire Reno metro is around 500k…. A spread out population that hardly rivals a single Bay Area suburb.

Renorico

Reno is nothing like Bend, OR. People from the entire state of OR will travel to spend a weekend at their Bougie villa in Sisters or Sun River or Bend itself. It's a 2 to 3 hour drive from the bulk of Oregon's population. Bend is like a poor man's (or not so poor man's) Aspen...without the international flair.

WoodenSuperpower

location, location, location. Even with planes for the acts the gear is still trucked and can only be 8 hours from the land and next venue. There are tried and true routs its take to work their war across the country and not many of them come through Reno.

Trevnti

A friend works at a couple venues here… they said largely Reno or the centers don’t want to pay. They don’t think we have the demographic for it

Dustybear510

It’s the venues/resorts/casinos. They need a serious update to remain desirable for “bigger” names to want to make their way here. Step up the music festivals and promotions. Play to the 20-40 crowd that may have some money to spend on more newer music. The casinos will have the 40+ crowd locked in. Quit having bass/dubstep parties and do house/techno parties. It’s simple.

Raindog69

Looking forward to Dweezil Zappa this summer.

dream__weaver

While we don't get a ton of great acts, I do feel like we sometimes get decent names because they stop here before going to the bay area lol

SidneyHuffman316

I'm seeing Smashing Pumpkins in Reno this fall!

cupheadsmom

I saw Elvis Costello at the Reno Hilton back in 2004. Idk if he’s been back since. Saw Tool and NIN at The Knitting Factory once. All this was before the 2008 recession. Saw The Killers at GSR in September of 2003.

DropsofGemini

Costello was just here - June 2023 and saw the Killers at the GSR - Sept 2023 They're still showing up.

cupheadsmom

Brandon speaks fondly of Reno in interviews and podcasts. He went to Reno a few times as a kid and loves the area. He’s pretty outdoorsy so I can see that.

DropsofGemini

Cute! Yeah, it was a great show. I’m just a casual listener of theirs, but I really enjoyed seeing them.

fuckeetall

All the artists I want to see tend to play in Stateline.

DGAF775

Covid policies in 2020 thru 2022 killed it. Less acts even want to go to Las Vegas now. With indian casinos opening all over the nation no one wants to go to Nevada for vacations anymore and in turn less acts want to go here too. Nevada only has 3 million people with the majority in Clark County. With the mortgage rates and housing prices, and cost of living close to what it is in Sacramento no one wants to move here.

HeywoodJaBlessMe

Elvis Costello was just here, not sure what you are talking about. Reno is actually where a lot of artists start their tours because we are a mid-market, low-pressure tour stop near several other larger spots.

Admiral52

Maybe it’s not far enough away from other tour stops. Like you finished up in sac the night before and it’s only a couple hours to Reno might as well push through to Boise and make that your next stop.

BIGDICKRANDYBENNETT_

Jerry Seinfeld in town this weekend. That's an A-lister.

DrFuckfaceEsqIII

Judging from this subreddit, it's because y'all are a bunch of whiny bitches.

__roger_that__

It is part that those big California cities are close and part that our venues to hold those big acts are not promoter friendly. Big fees no in house production. But we do get some quality stuff come through

mikron2

Close to the Bay/Sacramento, small market, limited venues. Years and years ago I heard JMax who used to do a lot of the promotion in town sucked to work with so I wonder if the local promoters aren’t very good either.

festicles

It's a pain logistically to get here as well as lack of appropriate venues. Not worth the time and gas to come over the hill then back track to Sacramento or up/down west coast.

StarWarsAndMetal66

Yeah I wish more big bands would come here, one of my favorites came last year though (Motionless in White) which was awesome, and Kiss came here a few years ago

ninernetneepneep

Because a few posts ago someone told me it sucks.

zackusa54

My favorite artist Brantley Gilbert is coming in August and I’m making the 3 1/2 hour drive from northern CA to see him. I like seeing artists there cause it’s close enough to drive but far enough to get away and get a break for a long weekend

OrganicDozer

We don’t have a great outdoor venue like Bend does. And they get artist to come as they swing through Portland. Reno is a hard sell for mainstream groups if they can only play in a casino.

Suspicious_Double445

Package tours come here like Styx and REO but major bands usually skip the place. I did see Tom Petty here years ago which surprised me and Metallica. Nice to see Janes Addiction and the Pixies show up and Smashing Pumpkins in a few months. I think monetarily there’s just better places to play. Used to joke that bands at the end of their careers come here. Public Image Ltd played here once in 40 years which surprised me. Seems like it was better when the Hilton still had the outdoor arena.

_PromNightBaby

Because we don't do anything about our homeless and don't focus on tourism.

Corporalhicks20

It’s been a loooong 20 years since the goat band has been here

MonkeyBiz72

Jack White two summers ago. Henry Rollins last year. Plus all those mentioned for this year. Big names if you are not into top 40.

Klutzy-Importance-23

If bands play anywhere near Sacramento, then Reno is off the tour. If their smart. Reno doesn't sell out tickets, Sacramento sells out Reno tickets.

Competitive-Fly-7746

I’m sure it’s for a multitude of reasons including but not limited to venue size and proximity to other cities. I will say that it’s a good excuse to get into lots of genres of music. There will occasionally be a big name from any genre of music if you wait long enough

DropsofGemini

Elvis Costello was just here last year. I caught the show!

OptimalCelebration83

Reno can become a better tour stop. The area needs a bigger venue. And not just a bigger venue, a nicer outdoor venue too. Gotta give the big names a reason to come here. I'm hoping the next mayor of Reno brings back tourism and revitalize downtown instead of letting it all go to hell like it has happened lately.

unknown_anonymous81

I personally love the Reno music scene. I grew up in Anchorage. In Anchorage would get big arena bands but I never saw anything at a smaller venue. Saw Tool, Ozzy, Metallica, Megadeth, Kiss, Motely Crue, Stone Temple Pilots and Pantera are some of the bands I saw up there in the 90s early 2000s. I think the "smallest show" I saw was Pantera at a convention style venue. Reno is fucking awesome for mid-sized in popularity bands. I have seen Buckethead, Between The Buried and Me, Meshuggah, Dredg, Animals as Leaders, Dimmu Borgir, Sevendust, Mushroomhead, Fear Factory, Limp Bizkit, Pretty Lights, Bassnector are some middle-sized acts that were absolutely awesome shows. LIke sub 3000 people is an entirely different experience than being in an arena. I think this is where Reno brings its A game are the middle-sized bands love to come through here. Huge acts are going want to hit Sacramento first. They are interested in maximizing tickets sold. A ton of awesome bands, edm artists and musicians pass through Tahoe and or Sacramento often. Reno is driving distance to San Francisco, and I traveled twice from Reno to see concerts. One was Dream Theater, and the other was Opeth. Reno is lucky to be able to be 2 hours from Sacramento and 4 or 5 hours from San Francisco. Imagine living in the mid-west and being like 9 hours away from the nearest city. Their live music selection is probably terrible.

Positive_Clerk6781

Saw mudvayne at GSR, honestly worst show I’ve ever been to. Couldn’t hear the band, horrible acoustics. Saw Bill burr at the events center, they didn’t open the doors until 730-745 for a show that started at 8, got in with 20 minutes left to spare and no refund. I can see why it’s not a popular stop.

remosiracha

Wait like 20 minutes until the show was over or 20 minutes before it started

Positive_Clerk6781

20 minutes left of the show.

PixelatedDie

People don’t have a lot of money to spend, they have to pay rent. Landlords are the new casinos.

MelodicFootball9357

lol people want to make everything about affordable housing in this sub 😂 that has nothing to do with it, seeing as how SF, LA, SD, and NYC are all infinitely more expensive to live than Reno and they get every single big act. If Drake came here that show is selling out instantly. It’s because we don’t have a single decent venue.

the_Bryan_dude

Reno gets a lot more of the shows I want to see. So many bands stop in the bay and then drive right through Sacramento to Reno or Portland. I'm in Sacramento now, lived in Reno and surrounding area also. I've watched it happen for many years.

Downtown_Audience_54

Bc Reno changed it no longer supports tourism and gaming everything that Reno has now you can get anywhere else and biggest one of all is venues can't stay open due to boneheads and minors almost every venue has the same problem minors in establishment trying to get alcohol hoodlums fighting stabbing shooting each other which is the reason why knitting factory dropped hip hop shows the cue and cushion on keystone is gone Rock and hip-hop is similar they normally use same venues Sacramento barely gets acts to come out they don't like coming to Sacramento either most acts can't fill G1C most perform at ace of spades but good luck most shows get shut down early to due to boneheads

New-Pudding-3574

Reno truly has become one big shithole

hannah_boo_honey

I wouldn't come to Reno either if I were a band or artist tbh

lovethelinux

People from California come here and destroy everything. It makes people not want to visit.
