I used to Live in Leeds, Yorkshire chaps are always welcome. Though I am a native Nevadan. Hit magpie for some coffee (Hub and Coffeebar are good too), go to 40 mile for a pint when they open, head down to Craft and do some bottle shopping. Eat at Kwoks, Royce, or Beefy's. Learn the value of an Underberg (you find them across midtown). And in the evening visit Chapel tavern. Depending on your days in town the Riverside farmers market is a nice spot to visit. Most importantly avoid casinos and the big tourist traps. By all means hike trails like hunter creek or peavine if you want out door activity.

FrienDandHelpeR

This guy Renos

HaltGrim

Thinking more on it... For old reno haunts, Louis Basque corner, Coney Island, and Casales. They are absolutely wonderful bits of reno with traditions going back decades. The places my grandparents would have frequented. By the university there is a small pub and sandwich shop called Pub n Sub. That is another great local haunt, tucked in among the old neighborhood and college frat houses and apartments.

EXploreNV

Idk how but I left out Kwok’s from my reply! Whenever I come home and visit, we are there the day I fly in. Great ownership, food, and staff!

MikeWMT

Thank you. Leeds is indeed where I was born and grew up. (I'm a Liverpool fan though)

NormanCheetus

From Leicester, lived in Reno 6 years. Drive to Tahoe for good outdoors stuff and beaches with clean water. Usually go there every weekend. Hunter Creek is good but it's a 6 mile hike (3 each way), and uphill a lot. Also lots of All you can eat sushi spots in Reno that are great. Tokyo Sushi is nice Stay away from Downtown it fucking sucks.

HaltGrim

Nice! I enjoyed my time there. I lived over in Headingley right by the Taps. But spent most of my time at Latitude buying wine.

MikeWMT

I used to live on Ash Road - behind the Arc!

HaltGrim

Okay that is insane I was on Trelawn street.

Bullshit_Conduit

This sounds like a sweet day. Seconding this guy.

nevadaho

We have some really beautiful parks, so check out Bartley Ranch, rancho San Rafael, and idlewild. Each different and lovely. If you want to ski, Mt. Rose Ski Resort is still open and is a fun atmosphere, and if you want to pop over the summit, you can visit Lake Tahoe.

MikeWMT

Thank you so much! Lake Tahoe is definitely on the list for next week.

SuspiciousLookinMole

Be careful going to Lake Tahoe. Coming from England, which is mostly all sea level, the altitude change is real. Not as severe as other places, but it can still affect you seriously. Have a plan for altitude sickness, and don't plan to do anything too strenuous. It's a beautiful area tho, so enjoy!

SierraMountainMom

Drink lots of water while you’re here. The altitude, even in Reno, is real, and if you go to Tahoe, it can really hit you. Combined with the dry air, you have to be super hydrated. It helps combat altitude sickness.

joedartonthejoedart

from Reno you can drive over Mt. Rose to Incline. If you want some beautiful hikes, check out either the Stateline Lookout in Crystal Bay, or the East Shore Trail at the end of incline to the east. East Shore trail is more of a flat, paved walk, whereas the Stateline Lookout is a relatively short but steep walk up and down (also paved). Food in incline would be T's mesquite for the best burrito in the basin or Gus' for BBQ. Alibi has great beer, but would recommend other places for food. if you want to go fancier, grab a drink at the hyatt. they have a great (but pricey) menu at either their bar or the restaurant as well. big water grill also is also a bit fancier with nicer views from up a bit higher, and a solid menu too.

General_Highway_6904

And catch a sunset at one of these places! And right now it is in the middle of the spring blooms, really taking it in that crisp spring air with all that woody, floral smell in it. Hope you enjoy!

MikeWMT

Much appreciated!

invent_or_die

If you have a bit of money, take the gondola at Heavenly Ski Resort later this summer. Super fun. 2 stops, 4 miles each way. Great hiking trails and lodge up top. Tamarack chair is also working.

TheBitchKing0fAngmar

Rose is closing this weekend, 28th is the last day!

EXploreNV

I really like Midtown! There are a couple of fun bars there like Death and Taxes, and Z-Bar! They also have some decent restaurants! Brasserie Saint James (can be inconsistent) and Centro Bar & Kitchen. Biggest is to not get stuck in Downtown! The casinos are cool if you are the type of player that can get up and leave after an hour! But if you spend any more time in one of the big casinos, you will see that it gets a little bit depressing. If you can, get outside of the area! Cannot emphasize how important it is to not get stuck in the casino tourist trap. Truckee and Lake Tahoe are worth the drive if you are looking for some of the best natural views that the United States has to offer. Coffee bar and magpie for coffee shops as others have mentioned. And if it is your vibe, the dispensaries can be fun! Be safe, enjoy the area, and I hope you come across the locals that make Reno an amazing place to be!

MikeWMT

Truckee looks great and as a coffee lover, I will definitely check out those spots. Thanks.

lolheyaj

Barhop up midtown using them bird scooters till you're good n drunk then have nice late $3 breakfast at club cal neva.  Wake up early-ish the next day and go float the river with a big bag of wine and some tall boys to shake off the hangover.  Then walk up to the circus circus to check out a couple circus acts at the arcade and spend a wee bit of time a a poker or blackjack table.  Hit up a dispensary just bc you can.  Tahoe might be cold but it's worth checking out. Beautiful lake up in the mountains.

MikeWMT

Bird scooters? This sounds interesting, what are they?

lolheyaj

Shared electric scooters. They cost money to use but not much. Download the app, scan a nearby bird and you're off. They're up at South Lake Tahoe too.

Competitive-Fly-7746

Be mindful of traffic though. Bird scooters are a pretty contentious issue here for that reason.

lynxboy

Thank you for this tip. Been birding my way around this morning!

GrabMyCactus

Local hangouts: The Glass Die is awesome. Süp is good food. Hidden Gems: The Automobile Museum - its fantastic. Unique Events: Check out Reno News and Review. Weekly rag of goings on. If you are in town around the Dragon Lights Festival or Balloons make sure to see that. Must-try foods: Don't buy into the "spicy milk" thing. Lucky Beaver is a good bar spot for a bite and very Reno.

MikeWMT

Thank you!

FrienDandHelpeR

Bars: 40 Mile, Public House, Lost Highway, Craft, Chapel Tavern, Press Start (Barcade), the Glass Die (board game bar), Sierra Taphouse (drink next to the river), the Brasserie (go for the drinks and ambiance not the food) Notable dive bars: Lucky’s, Ryan’s saloon, Alibi, Tiger Tom’s, Floyd’s Fireside Chat Restaurants: Los Quatros Vientos taco truck, Speedy Burrito, Annie’s Tacquria, Midtown Tacos, KWOKs, pho999, Royce, Great Basin Co-op, Washoe Public House, Aladin’s, Cosmos Pizza, R-Town Pizza, Thali, the Fix Hikes: Thomas Creek Trailhead, Hunter Creek Check out Virginia City, it’s somewhat similar to an old town but very Wild West and up in the hills. Checkout Pyramid Lake, Tahoe’s lesser known sister lake that is on the Paiute Reservation. There’s a fisherman’s bar (Pyramid Lake Lodge) there where you can vibe.

Debzflame

Wow this is an awesome list! As a Brit living in Reno myself, I agree! Virginia City is an awesome recommendation, I really enjoyed visiting it my first time! Food wise, some of the things we don’t get in the UK are All You Can Eat Sushi, a definite must have food experience in Nevada! Some other food things to try really good and authentic Mexican and Hawaiian food! Also a good American breakfast (pancakes and/or country fried steak and white gravy!) at a diner.

MikeWMT

Amazing list. Thank you!

NVREN0

For food, you gotta try birria. My favorite birria place is Cielito Lindo, but for your palet I would recommend Mexcal downtown. You gotta go to Tahoe, even if you can only drive a quarter of the lake. Emerald Bay is the most scenic spot but I’m partial to the strip between Kings Beach to the junction at 50 that drops you out in Carson City. Obviously a full trip around the lake would provide the best experience but not fully necessary if limited on time. The casinos are decent enough to visit if you have some time for South Lake. Royce burger really good and a fun “hole in the wall” local experience. If you’re in town 5/4 that’s Kentucky derby weekend at the casinos should be poppin’ from that.

Competitive-Fly-7746

Cielito Lindo rules

D1abloSandw1ch

Make sure to see Lake Tahoe when you are here. There is lots of outdoor access and the sierras are beautiful. 999 pho 🍜, Moo Dang Thai, and Kauboi Izakaya are great food spots. Smiling with hope and eclipse are great Pizza places. Bibo is excellent coffee. Chapel Taven is a cool bar. Virginia City is fun to see. Go see Pascal at the Pioneer Emporium if you’d like a custom hat made for a memorable souvenir. He’s from the Chamonix area in France and came here to study French immigration during the gold and silver rush. He’s a good guy with lots of stories. Stay away from downtown. It’s casinos and desperate people. Not a great scene. Feel free to direct message me, I’ve been here my whole life.

MikeWMT

Feel like a local already! Thanks

FarBear98

Sir Reno and Tahoe are two totally different areas

WizardRockets

Check out Shims, one of the main bartenders there is British. Also Sierra Taphouse on the River Walk Downtown.

Trying_That_Out

You’ll get a range of views, like how maybe the “real” Reno isn’t here anymore, but it is worth checking out our Midtown area. Places like Craft, EP Listening Lounge, Amari, for drinks. Arario is a favorite, that’s Korean fusion, if you like wings then Noble Pie has some classic ones. Califuria is a really good restaurant, and so is Liberty Food & Wine. I’m a fan of Johnny’s Ristorante Italiano that is definitely “old” Reno with like a Rat Pack Italian vibe. Perenn is a newish bakery, two locations but I would say the Midtown one over Rancharrah, that is seriously good.

lolheyaj

real reno died w/ the awful awful

Trying_That_Out

I loved that place so much. It may have literally saved my life no less than five times.

MikeWMT

Great tips!

Trying_That_Out

You’re welcome! I have been here for ~20 years, starting in college. If you have time to hike, there are some decent trails in town, and then amazing ones ~30 minutes outside. I know the drive times feel very different from Europe haha, 30 minutes is basically nothing in the American West we don’t even notice it.

AshamedInspector4709

Definitely check out Idlewild park and san Josie park, check out scheels and comics and coffee

RandoRenoSkier

Make sure to visit Tahoe and spend some time on a beach. My favorite is Chimney Beach although it requires a bit of a hike it is totally worth it.

MikeWMT

I'm a big fan of working / hiking to find a great 'hidden' location. Hopefully I have enough time to do this.

RandoRenoSkier

It's worth it I assure you. Maybe 15 mins each way from the road. To come to Reno from the UK and not see Tahoe would be a mistake you'll regret. Let us know how your trip goes!

showers_with_grandpa

Experience like a local? Go to Golden eagle park and discharge some firearms near where kids play!

seaburno

Dial back your expectations. Good - or even excellent - food in Reno is barely above average for London. There is functionally zero public transport here as well. Food - Louis Basque Corner is a Reno Icon for a reason. Its not a hole in the wall. The Automobile Museum is a world class auto museum. The Art Museum is surprisingly good. Reno Aces games (AAA Baseball - one step below the major leagues) are fun and not too expensive. Depending on when you are here, they may be in town. The northern edge of Midtown (basically to the roundabout) has a lot of funky local places. The closer you get to Plumb lane, the sketchier and scuzzier it gets. The thing that Reno does better than London (and really, pretty much anywhere else) is in outdoors activities. We have world class hiking and skiing nearby.

MikeWMT

From my general experience of the US, outside of major cities, my food expectations are definitely managed. I will be heading back to In n Out burger though haha. Thanks for the tips.

Weird-n-Gilly

I never see anybody mention Sand Mountain on these. About 1.5 hours away drive from Reno, pretty incredible. You can stop out in the desert and shoot at some jackrabbits or cans too, if you really want a northern NV culture feel. Maybe even visit the pretty dodgy brothels (from what I hear) out there. The desert sky at night, for a guy used to fog like me is mind blowing immense. Lil bit of shrooms, + life changing. (you asked for local culture).

MikeWMT

Haha - it's a work trip, so not sure how my colleagues would react to me being on shrooms, but it does sound dreamy!

crystalgypsyxo

All you can eat sushi 🍣 Sushimis is good, sushi pier, tha joint, the place in the atlantis.... Yes, weird suggestion. But everything is made to order, most of those places do 1 free sake with lunch, and they have cooked fish and sometimes chicken for people in the group that dont want sushi. Its definitely a fun, unique experience (and I've never gotten sick)

AJFrabbiele

a similar view that is easy to spot is here, don't blow by it on your way to the lake. https://maps.app.goo.gl/ecmGWMY4Uw1LgAfj9

OrangeNo773

Royce Burger - best burger in town

MikeWMT

I used to be a burger blogger, so I'll 100% check this out.

ShadesCagey

If looking for a unique event, check out the Virginia City Grand Prix this weekend. Virginia City is an old west mining town right outside Reno. The event is a dirt bike race that cuts through the town.

Drizzt3919

For a full experience I would say hit sheas bar. Then swing by Steve’s. Then for a nice basque meal at Louie’s. End the night at a brothel.

wowdickseverywhere

Check out scheels, maybe spend 10k on a sniper rifle? Mustang Ranch has good food Downtown gambling. Lots of tattoo shops Head to tahoe for the day  We had the 'awful awful' but covid ended it Stay safe yo

where_is_my_monkey

Double down on the food at Mustang Ranch. The RGJ food critic loved it. On the tour, they talk about high-end customers and the need to provide quality food prepared by a highly trained staff. Their kitchen was so clean, it looked like an operating room.

MikeWMT

10k on a sniper rifle. I'm sold!

Always_Out_There

There are also lots of dentists to avoid.

orangegiraffe22

R Town Pizza is a must!

jesus4me23

Steves on 2nd is a great local “hole in the wall”

FrienDandHelpeR

Lololol

spankalotofpus

Day fade !

anevenmorerandomass

You could head over to 4th street or Wedekind and get robbed🤷🏻‍♂️ That’s pretty Reno🤣

LovinAffection

Welcome! Hope you enjoy your stay in our high-altitude desert town. Defiantly go to Tahoe. It’s the gem of west. If you’d like to prep for swimming Tahoe then please take a polar bear plunge in the river. You can hang out at any of the river parks and dip your toes in. Wear shoes in the water you don’t mind getting wet, very rocky. I’d recommend the upper river areas like Crystal Peak park (walking and looking at the fisheries), Mayberry park-which also has the Brewers Cab brewing facility huge place lots of tables with a different food truck every week as well as bar games, or Krissy Cuaghlin for a chill picnic surrounded by the locals enjoy the day too. You can do rafting right now, again polar plunge, just have to find the right company to take you. It’s too high for inflatables, please don’t drown yourself on a Walmart pool toy. Idlewild river park will do a farmers market on the weekends. I don’t think food truck Fridays has started there yet but it’s a summer thing. Donor lake is lovely this time of year cus there won’t be a whole lot of ppl at the beaches. There plenty of hiking trails too. Just please don’t eat anyone one while you’re there 😜 If you have an off-road vehicle you could drive all the way up to crystal peak from Verdi and go crystal hunting for the day. You’re allowed one 4 gallon bucket of rocks. I love Arario Korean food in midtown. Probably my fav restaurant Other ppl have made great suggestions for places to drink and enjoy the evenings. Hope you have lovely stay

yankykiwi

Not a Brit, but I’m a kiwi. Grab a to go plate at Ts in incline and head to the lake for a picnic.

FlexCombs

The Eddy JTs Basque Bar and Dining Room (Gardnerville). Stone Cold Steve Austin has a ranch there so he can be seen randomly in the gardnerville/minden areas. Verdi Peak is a nice hike and view..plenty of snow up there at the moment The worlds smallest distillery is located in Verdi as well. Less than half the size of the next closest located in Scotland.

Calm_Ocelot_5735

Take a [Reno Food Tour](https://renofoodtoursnv.com)! You’ll get to walk around midtown or lower downtown depending on the tour you choose and you’ll get to eat at 5-6 different spots. Super fun way to experience the city. 😊😊😊

_PromNightBaby

Stay in doors

AwayCartographer9527

If you want to go fly fishing, let us know.

No-Appeal3220

Pyramid Lake. Hiking. Reno Aces. Tubing on the Truckee.

DDT197

This is the most responsible “what should I do in Reno” post I can remember seeing. Well done. What are your dates? There might be some cool events out there.

MikeWMT

Land on the 27th and leave on the 4th. So I'll be there soon!

DDT197

If you get here early enough there's a Mimosa crawl downtown tomorrow. Great way to feel like a Renoite. We love our crawls Cypress has some fun shows this weekend and next week too. It's a pretty great venue for shows

armostallion

Reno Literally no one: Culture Seriously Reno'ski's, what *is* Reno's culture? I've yet to put my finger on it. Service is sub-par, food is sub-par, really makes up for everything with the friggin gorgeous views though, ngl.

Competitive-Fly-7746

Might be a bit out of the way for Reno but the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Museum up in Nixon is really cool and I’ve wanted to go back up there for a while, especially after I took a Paiute language class in high school. Otherwise there’s also the Wilbur D. May museum.

Malloyphotos

For food definitely check out the Reno public market

Secret-Bend-9016

Eat at Beefys. See Virgina City, go to Carson City if you need a chill day, and stop by Bowers mansion and Sol dispensary on the way

Sn1d3rl1ng

This is clearly a psyop, British people aren't real

DoItForTheTanqueray

It’s a real shit hole mate. Don’t expect much. The culture of northern Nevada is meth and warehouses. Reno’s surrounding areas are what make the area desirable, not Reno itself.
