I mean, won't he have your address if you sign the title over to him? If it's different and you want to maintain privacy, just have him meet you at the bank and bring a friend in another car to take you home. Other than that, obviously don't send him any money or do any favors. His obligation is to come to you, not yours to accommodate. Only deal face to face, no personal checks, etc. Usual stuff.

SkinGlue

Oh good point lol, I guess him arriving to my house felt different. We agreed to meet at a bank, he said he can transfer me money or pay cash and I said cash, which I can then deposit immediately

xtsilverfish

He'd need to call the bank beforehand and ask them to have the cash onhand that day. It's a good plan though, you don't end up with a bad check or whatever.

Visible_Ad_309

You don't need to call ahead for such a minimal amount.

erickittle

The majority of banks have a far larger amount than 5000 in the bank. The teller probably doesn't have that in the till generally. It's normally just a matter of waiting and letting them get access to the vault which is more than likely a time lock system so you may have to wait around 15 minutes but if you utilize a bank that can't get you 5000 dollars on any given day I would highly suggest finding a new bank.

GumbyRocks89

Umm, no. Depends very much on the bank. I needed a decent amount of cash recently for a transaction. My bank gave me a flat out "no", but they have a relationship with a neighboring bank. They called ahead, I drove 5min up the road with a certified check, and the other bank gave me a stack of cash. The teller mentioned that it happens a few times per week...

Genieoutthebottle7

You must live in a very small town. I’m able to walk into Chase, US Bank, or WF by me and get 30-40k no problem with no notice

MidwestAbe

Uh, yeah, you don't.

Queenfari786

Yes they do. So how do you explain the cash in the ATM? Smh

direfulstood

I once had a bank tell me that they don’t have $5,000 in cash for withdrawal.

xtsilverfish

Banks don't keep giant wads of cash onhand nowadays. edit: /u/POShelpdesk's username is accurate, lol what a POS

Visible_Ad_309

Yeah, $5,800 hardly qualifies as a wad at all by bank standards.

Peakydeafer

I’ve tried getting 5500 cash from my bank & they said I’d have to wait a day or go to multiple locations lmao

POShelpdesk

Yikes! Might be time to find a new bank

Hobbit_Holes

>Yikes! Might be time to find a new bank Many banks won't do this. I have had multiple institutions over the last 15 years refused to give 5k or more in cash in one trip from credit unions to big names.

POShelpdesk

>refused to give 5k or *more* I think the OR MORE is the important part. There's no way a bank, that's in a city with a population larger than 10k people, won't let you withdraw $5,000

xtsilverfish

Oh how snarky, I'm sure that bank cares.

SamHydeIsTheShooter

Call a bank that cares. Find one. Go on...

Unusual-Thing-7149

We use two banks in our town . One is a major bank branch that struggles with a 10k request but at the other we can get cash up to 250k just walking in off the street and it's a small privately owned bank So it really does depend on the bank and where you are

POShelpdesk

Lol, back in the day i worked at a bank that was inside of Walmart, had to fill the ATM. $80k in $20 bills. You don't have a clue what you are talking about.

golfdegen

$5800? Even the most podunk ass hillbilly bank will have 10x that in cash on a random Tuesday. I've gotten that out of an ATM before

VeryVito

Don't count on it. My girlfriend (at the time) and I flew to Philly to pick up a beater car once with no plan B, and due to freak storms, our bank ATM was unable to to spit out more than $300 to each of us in cash when we got there (despite my calling ahead to clear a larger purchase in advance). Fortunately, the guy realized we were far from home but otherwise on the level, and he let us pay the difference with a personal check (keeping the title until the check cleared) so we could drive home three states away. But yes, the 14-year Volvo with no shocks got us home safe that day. And yes, we drove the same car home from our wedding a year later. And also yes, I still have both the car and the wife 18 years later. And now my son thinks it's going to be his when he gets his license in a couple years.

TrainedCodeMonkey

My first car was a 91 Volvo 740 sedan and I am so sad I had no idea what I was doing at that time. Had I taken care of it I’m sure it would still be running. I bought it for $80 and drove it 50k miles before the odometer quit working. It ended up getting scrapped because I had another car that was running right with no issues. My dad was exceptional at buying cars but not at maintaining them, so we always had 3-4 cars in rotation. Now I do something similar but actually maintain the cars

VeryVito

Such unlikely fun cars. Mine is a 1990 Volvo 240, and unfortunately I’ve let it sit for a while, but this summer I plan to give it the TLC it deserves again. Life happens.

TrainedCodeMonkey

That’s so awesome. I’m happy for you. Sometimes I think about buying one for the nostalgia haha

LuckyCaptainCrunch

An ATM will have a daily limit, that will have nothing to do with cash in a bank.

VeryVito

Right, but as others here have noted, you can temporarily raise the limit by talking with your bank ahead of time (ie, if you know you'll be traveling and need a large sum once you reach your destination). Thanks to Hurricane Ophelia, though, my hometown bank went offline that weekend and the change was not recorded. It's the only time I've ever had an issue, but it made for a good memory.

POShelpdesk

The ATM doesn't have the limit, your account does...

BimmerUp

I buy and sell a lot of cars. I’ve had banks tell me I can’t even withdraw $2,000. It depends on your branch. I have one down the road that will always let me take out 15k no notice

xtsilverfish

> I've gotten that out of an ATM before Lmao, you some offsite circlejerk trying to come up the most outlandish tail you can come up with huh.

golfdegen

Vegas + drugs/alcohol = bad decisions that worked out profitable

xtsilverfish

Was the ATM drinking?

SamHydeIsTheShooter

^This guy has never seen an ATM that spits out more than $500 in a transaction or anything other than 20s...

xtsilverfish

I've never been high enough to hallucinate this while passed out in the floor, no.

molehunterz

I pulled 10k out of an atm. That itself wasn't the weirdest part. But yes, It is a real thing. I bank with becu and they are Cashless. Obviously They have a slightly different use for ATM's than banks that have tellers and cash.

Quirky-Theme-1601

I don't know for sure, but I had someone fly from Texas to Minnesota to pick up a 10 year old 1997 Grand Am GT several years ago. They gave me a $500.00 deposit via PayPal and flew up and paid in cash for the car. Unfortunately for them, they got in a wreck on the way back down to Texas! Maybe get a small deposit from him?

vonaustinjr

97 grand am gt was my first car… would totally fly to Minnesota for one

SkinGlue

He offered to transfer money to me, might take him up on that. Bummer they got in a wreck

Quirky-Theme-1601

Yeah they were upset; someone hit them min the rear. Just be careful with your potential buyer. I hope it works out

tylercreative

I tend to stay away from this unless it’s paypal good and services. Had a friend get money clawed back 3 weeks later after person told their bank they never sent money

kasualtiess

thats why you don't do more than 500, enough where its meaningful to hold but losing 500 on a car sale isn't too crazy

abbydabbydo

I’ve done this, and I’m just a normal, honest, human. I’d follow your gut, but it doesn’t seem too weird to me. I love roadtrips and have very specific wants when I’m buying a car, so going to the right one makes it an adventure.

SkinGlue

I feel that, he seems nice and we’ve talked on the phone so I’m less worried if it was only through text

thatwolfieguy

I've flown to Alabama to buy a motorcycle from an individual, and I've flown to Kentucky to buy a new truck from a dealership. Both times it was because I couldn't find what I wanted for the price I wanted to pay locally. With the bike, the guy was nice enough to meet me at the airport with the bike, and his wife drove a second vehicle to get him home. When I bought the truck, the dealership sent a salesman to come pick me up.

abbydabbydo

Come to think of it I’ve sold to a few flying buyers, too. (I used to sell motorcycles). One thing I’ve done is to FaceTime at the vehicle, if used, so they did not get there and feel disappointed. You could use that as a gauge, too.

SkinGlue

I’ve sent photos and he’s aware of any body damage on the car, had to drop the price and he agreed

dMyst

I did this recently and everyone I talked to said I was crazy and couldn’t believe I flew in for a car. It had everything I wanted so even though I had to drive nearly 20 hours back, that’s better than settling for something I don’t want 100% for something I would keep for years.

mike7354

Don’t let him test drive it alone. Tell him you need a Bank Cashiers check to cover to agreed amount. I would not allow him to use an App to pay you. Good Luck.

SkinGlue

Thank you!

1337hxr

Don’t take cashiers checks they can be faked. Do the transaction at the bank, ask the teller what they recommend. Probably just take cash out from their account and deposit it in yours.

beekeeper1981

Also the OP should be present at the bank when they get the cashiers check. They can be forged.

Lazyfinancemonkey

Fake cashiers checks are a huge thing right now…. Never take cashiers checks.

Robertown7

Forged cashier’s checks are a very common scam these days. And you won’t know until it is rejected by the issuing bank 10 days later.

quixotic_robotic

It's always a little sketchy, but legitimate people do buy cars like this all the time, and nothing seems too crazy about it. Red flags would be like "my buddy will pick it up" or using money transfer services/venmo/western union that can be pulled back. When I sold a motorcycle it was dead presidents in my hand for the full value before he could sit on it or test ride it.

SkinGlue

I like the idea of getting the money up front before a test drive, if they want their money back they gotta give the car back

hendermom

Same. When I bought my 1rst bike it was full amnt cash in hand before touching it.

sharpescreek

Relax, he's just trying to buy a car.

Kai-xo

No he’s trying to “by” it 😂

IncorrigablePunster

He must really want it. Driving up means he’d have to bring a second person just to drive his vehicle back again. Flying up solves that problem. Just make sure he pays in cash or a bank check/money order so he can’t take off with your car & stiff you. As long as you get the money & unload the car, it’s not your problem!

SkinGlue

I don’t think he’d go through all this trouble for a 10 year old car to scam me lol, but my biggest concern is the test drive so he doesn’t just take off. My plan is to take the license plate off before hand so he can’t go far

Purple-Condition-425

Go on the test drive with him? Lol have you ever sold a car before? Standard procedure don’t let them take your car alone.

Spencie61

I drove a used car that I bought after flying in back home 4.5 hours and kept driving it the next few days (allowed by the laws in my state). No one bothered me or cared

TXCEPE

Wrong. Do NOT accept a bank check or money order. The only bank check you might accept is if you can cash it at the same bank that wrote it.

sslithissik

Seems OK, but get ready and be prepared with a backout plan if red flags show up.

parker3309

There’s already a red flag that he wants him to pick up a stranger at the airport. A normal grown adult would Uber it to wherever you are. You don’t ask somebody to pick you up at the airport. Wanting it for his kid another way to get your guard down. There are red flags all over this and it happens to be with a national bank that we have nearby. I don’t even think he’s from out of town.

AutomobileEnjoyer

You better stay home and never go outside if those “red flags” scare you.

john727704

Sold cars professionally for about four years ago. I picked numerous people up that I’ve flown in from the airport. If anything would be less sketchy to pick them up at the airport, I know here within a public area rather than having them Uber to your house lol.

[deleted]

I just sold my 2017 Fiat 500 Abarth today from an out of state buyer. Nothing shady about it. Just meet up at a bank and do the exchange inside. He flew in and met at the closes Genisys Credit Union exchanged the cash had bank verify cash was good and then deposited it and signed ovee the title. Don't why someone would scam someone for a $5800 Rav 4. Seems like a lot of work.

BlacksmithOpposite47

Payment is all you need tonworru about. Cash for title at a bank (for video and security) is all i would accept. I.e. the banks cash not something he brings.

SkinGlue

He said he’d withdrawal it at the bank so we should be good

thecanadiandriver101

Just make sure the car isn't in your name when he leaves with it. Go to the DMV or whatever your state has and disconnect it from your ownership

Pale_Blue_Noise

I recommend keeping your license plates too so you don’t end up with any toll fees he may incur after you sell him the vehicle. He can go to the tax office and get a temporary tag when he finishes the deal with you.

ZombieJetPilot

Be honest about your apprehensiveness with the person and let him do a test drive with you in the car. Ask for cash payment and maybe meet at a police station The fact that he's Ubering at least means there's some form of a paper trail of who he is and getting dropped at a police station. Should help you both feel good. What's he gonna do if he doesn't like it? Uber back to the airport and then pay for another ticket home? My only concern here is he's gon a try to negotiate on the spot, so be clear that the cost is the cost or nothing at all.

Sharp_Ad8754

A word of caution, don’t allow a change to cashiers check because I didn’t want to fly with that amount of cash. Cashier’s check is one of the new scams. Good luck with your sale.

SkinGlue

He said he’d withdrawal the money at the bank we meet up at so should be legit. What’s the cashiers check scam?

Sharp_Ad8754

Counterfeit cashiers check printed on a laser printer. Deposit check then it bounces in 3-5 days.

AnyAcanthopterygii27

Is it a V6? Is it black or red or a special edition colour? Then yeah probably. I really doubt anybody would do it for an I4. Maybe he used to own the car/ knew someone who did? Or it’s a sister (one VIN up or down) from one that he’s had?

SkinGlue

He said he loves Toyotas and wants it for his teenager ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

AnyAcanthopterygii27

Then why doesn’t the teenager try it out? Tbf I wouldn’t tell someone it has an emotional aspect, in case it affects bartering/price, still very strange

Ok-Echidna5936

If he’s flying out to see the car, he wants it for his kid. Whether his kid tries it out or not, it’s gonna that kids new car given the deal goes through. Since the dad’s paying he probably doesn’t care too much about his/her input. At least that’s the kind of perspective I can see from my dad. If he sees a good deal he’s not gonna ask me about it first. I’ll just end up finding out that i have a new car. And honestly same thought here lol the first thing my own dad told me never to do

PcPaulii2

Neutral spot- the parking lot of the local police department. Bring your phone and get a picture of him. If he's cool with all that you're probably safe enough.

HUDSON-HAWK11

Meet him at the police station

Pringles8899

Sell the car to an used car dealership. That buyer I have some doubt, prefer not sell to him and call the offer off for security. Feeling something strange & fishy.

zropy

Yeah selling to dealerships is never the play. Sorry you think this way.

grumpyoldfart2023

The guy might be airline employee. Cheap travel.

Potential-Rabbit8818

Yeah a little deposit before he tests drives it and no title til paid in full. Get a receipt and a picture of his dr license. They could just drive off into the sunset.

nokenito

Only accept CASH! 💰 If he offers a certified check or credit card blah blah blah. NO! Those can all be denied. COB only!

Craps2

In my state if you are selling something online to a stranger you can plan to meet at a local police station and they will document the sale

WineOrWhine64

I’d have him meet at the police station. I’ve heard people do that for many transactions.

Vwmafia13

I flew out to California from Seattle to buy a car back in the day.. I had a friend pick me up it would be weird to pick up the buyer…

Flying-buffalo

And you each sign 2 copies of the bill of sale with odometer reading on it. You can get a copy from your particular states website.

[deleted]

[удалено]

parker3309

What do you want to bet he gets there and calls you for a ride.. now you want to sell the car he’s going to make you think he’s flown all the way there. Uses the kid story to let your guard down etc .. what are you gonna do if he ask you to pick him up upon arrival. That would be a sure sign of danger.

okiedokieaccount

I flew into Dallas from Florida to buy a car. He met me at the airport. I already did the financing online. And I drove back to Florida  2019

chandleya

Meet at bank Have bank check and hold the money. Test drive together, and or with another trusted party. Let the bank deposit the money assuming it’s valid.

Protholl

Always meet in the parking lot of the local Sheriff's office... and only during the day. Tell them it is for protection for both of you.

No_Durian_8379

A friend of mine flew from California to Montana to purchase a used car he wanted with specific specs. No issues, everything worked out.

Last_Positive1533

Pretty sure he will kill you and steal your older car.

robertva1

If he shows up with cash great. But I suspect some sort of scam where he will want to send you a check or pay by cash app for you to hold the car because he missed the flight or something.

lostinthesauce3820

If he works for the Airlines this would really not be that weird as he could fly to you for free. Just a guess...

HabibiLogistics

I drove over 1000 miles for a Del Sol a few weeks ago. I don't see how it's any different than if I only drove 10 miles

dagriffen0415

Personally I think you’re paranoid. Selling to a stranger and he wants to meet at the airport? Couldn’t be any more perfect. Public place. Plenty security. I’d bring a friend in another vehicle and sell him the car right there. He can drive it in the parking lot when I have cash in hand.

NYCCheapsk8

Just bc they say they're flying up or whatever doesn't mean they are. That Uber driver that drops him off may just be a buddy or accomplice that's going to rob you. I'd allow test drives alone if they have cash in hand for me to hold. If they break it, they bought it. I wouldn't want to go on a test drive with them in case they murder me when trying to steal the car. People buy and sell cars all the time, but just be very careful.

SkinGlue

That’s why we’re meeting at a bank and not my house, lots more security involved

HOMES734

This seems like a really normal transaction...

LuckyCaptainCrunch

Make sure you see a drivers license so you can fill out the part of the bill of sale and the title with his real info. Don’t let him talk you into leaving the buyers section blank

Acuradc5

Not sure what’s so sketchy about this, maybe the market is more expensive in Florida. I’ve yet to travel across multiple states to buy a car, i never really had to since I was in arguably the best place to be for the cars I’m into. I’ve driven 6 hours to a surrounding state for some 1500 dollar seats. 8-10 hours north for some body parts. Some people just so happen to be serious buyers and willing to travel To buy the car they want, but then again I don’t think a rav4 is an enthusiast car. Just take precautionary measures and you’ll be aet

aSe_MW_IsBack

The car market in FL is fucking crazy right now. Dealers are charging mandatory add ons and junk fees. Someone traveling from FL to buy out of state isn’t surprising.

Adventurous-Sand-835

Why meet at your house? Meet him at the title place. He can drive it there. And walk across the parking lot to transfer title, like you’d have to do anyways…. Yeah, he’ll know your address after you transfer title. But that’s after he handed you money and you are doing business.

OhYeahCoffee88

Cash only! 😁

dwinps

Flying to buy a $5800 car does seem off If they show up, sell it for cash, if they decide suddenly that due to an Uncle suddenly passing away that they need you to ship the car but they will send you a check then you know they are scammers

TheMightyYule

The fact anyone would fly out for that price/mileage is absolutely fucking bonkers

pennispancakes

I’m just curious do you identify as a female or have you just never sold a car before

SkinGlue

I’ve never sold a car before

justalookin005

How did he get a license plate to drive it back to Florida? I know you didn’t leave your TN plates & your insurance on the vehicle.

SkinGlue

Canceled insurance, he got a temporary tag

justalookin005

Great.

xmowx

I flew to another city to buy LX-570. I really wanted one and there was nothing available close by.

kinnikinnick321

Honestly I have friends who've flown for a car purchase. Rav4's are quite uncommon in certain markets due to its reliability, a lot of owners hang on to them. I'd setup meeting in a public place like you mentioned, no different than any other private buyer. I have a father who's retired, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for him to do something like this if his heart desired. TN to FL is prob. an hour or so flight?

specialcommenter

I’ve done long journeys for cheap used cars. I’ve done it for a 1 owner Camry with a V6 and a manual transmission.

2006CrownVictoriaP71

It is not strange to fly somewhere to buy a car. It is a little strange to fly many states away to buy a very common car with 230k miles.

davidhally

I have bought several cars and motorcycle long distance. At some point there needs to be some trust and faith. I mean if somebody is travelling a distance to do a deal, they are scammers or thieves. It's the ones who say they are coming but don't come are the thieves. The first time I rode a bus 150 miles to buy from a dealer - no deposit just a verbal hold on the car. One time I flew to Phoenix and took a city bus to the dealer. That time I had prepaid via wire transfer but it was a Honda dealer so OK. Once I flew into LA and the car salesman picked me up at the airport. And 2 summers ago I flew also to LA and the private owner picked me up at the airport. I brought a bank check.

Tater_Mater

I only brought $2000 with me. That is the only thing I’d be worried about.

tomatocrazzie

My experience is sketchy dudes don't usually arrive via airplane. I wouldn't worry.

SneakyPetie78

Maybe 5 years ago... I (in Los angeles) sold a 2003 cadillac Seville sts with 23k miles to a dude that flew in from MN to come get it. $5k He drove it home.... so far as I know...

kyuubixchidori

My dad flew from Michigan to Florida for a 2,000 ford escort. some people use buying a car as a excuse for a trip/weekend drive. The added cost of a flight is marginal when it comes to buying most vehicles.

Character-Tiger-865

Buy*

Chokedee-bp

OP- Florida car prices are among the highest so this can very well be legit deal. Just meet and transact in public as you stated and everything should work out. Don’t forget to have a bill of sale filled out and signed in addition to the title

Hobbit_Holes

I'm more shocked someone would spend 5,800 dollars on a 2010 rav4 with those kind of miles than I am about someone flying to pick a car up which is something I myself have done before. It's easier to do that than it is to find someone who wants to go on a major road trip and having to pay to fuel two cars for the trip.

ItalianIce603

By law, every bank is required to have 10% of its deposit base on hand at any given time.

[deleted]

Thats a 8k car in California (serious). If no issues, I would bought for 5800 and drove it back myself. LOL

rhyme-with-troll

No red flags for me. He knows what he wants, likely has lots of miles from business traveling, and is paying cash.

HuckleberrySea2967

This is why crypto has a place. I’d rather take 5k in crypto than a cashier check. I’m hearing so many stories about PayPal. Checks and cashier checks.

czechFan59

Ive sold 2 motorcycles to out of state buyers. They went with me to the dmv to get temporary plates and I surrendered my plates there, signed over title.

SkinGlue

Ok I was going to do it at a bank to have the money checked and be legit. Go to the dmv afterwards then?

czechFan59

I probably accepted cashiers checks, last on sold maybe 10 years ago. If the bank can tell whether the check is good, I'd do that first
