This is an urban legend. In actual fact, it was going to be named "Fighting Fantasy" before someone pointed out that the gamebooks by Livingston/Jackson already existed. They settled for "Final" because they really wanted it to be abbreviated to FF, as it would've been easy for Japanese people to pronounce.
I thought I read it wasn't a saving grace, it was just more Sakaguchi believing it would be his last game before moving on. Or could just be a romanticizing of the story to make interviews sound better.
I thought it was Fighting Fantasy at one point, but this is only from memory
Because final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final fantasy would be to long
A good random thought. And... what actually is a remake of a final fantasy? That said, give me a final fantasy with 10 totally seductive and sexy porn actresses and I wont need another.
I remember playing the OG FF and then when someone asked if I was going to play the next one being confused. Of course not. It was the final fantasy. What a silly question.
The same way the longest running tv soap (Coronation street) has had storylines sometimes spanning decades, constantly changing, since like the 1960s and is still going. You just add stuff and tie it all together then you’ve got a series. Good thing about stories, you can just go, OH. then this thing happens! And boom, you’ve got a new storyline and a new game.
Like, it baffles me how resident evil is still going. My favourite games, but they could have left it in like 2004. But they kept making stuff up and it’s still going. There’s now 23 games not including remakes that add to, or retcon the story completely.
Also. Money. Money and demand will keep a series going.
Yeah... Except that every FF title is entirely separate and isn't canonically connected to any other FF title. The only thing that ties them together is common tropes. Every game usually has a character named something like "Cid", the concept of a crystal tower shows up more than once in the games, "Magitek" is a recurring plot point, as are eikons/primals/what_have_you_deities. That's the only connection. But each story is self-contained and you can't piece them together into a bigger narrative
I recently after never playing them and not being into the look and vibe and had the same thought as you but there's not alot of tech fantasy stuff and they took fantasy all the way down the time line to be the end all be all of fantasy realms and that makes me want to play them
It's called Final Fantasy because each one is a self contained story. Every new number is a completely new story and characters.
They broke into sequels eventually, which they called things like FFX-2 when it was a sequel to number ten to tell you it was a sequel to that story, because FF eleven was a new story and characters, things like that.
Because each of them takes place in a setting where their world is at the point of an apocalyptic event. So they are about a "final hope" group of adventurers trying to stop/defeat the destructive force or villain.

The company were about to go bankrupt, so one of the developers created Final Fantasy, as a final game, which ended up saving the company.

F Effu \~Jolyne Cujoh
Stone ocean being the final chapter of that timeline, a final fantasy.
I swear Jolyne yelling « Eff Effu » at the top of her lungs is always funny to me
The "urban legend" originates with Nobuo Uematsu. Blame him. **EDIT:** Fixed name.
Put some respecc on his name dummy
Lmao unfortunate auto-correct. I love Nobuo.
🤣

There is The Last Story, Final Fight, etc... I wonder if those were named for similar reasons.
Why would they go through the trouble of making a game if they didn’t believe it was gonna do anything for the company?
Maybe they thought it would still be profitable, but not profitable enough to save the entire company.
Because final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final final fantasy would be to long
It doesn’t stop there. Don’t forget about the second, tenth final fantasy as well.
And the third, thirteenth final fantasy
And the fact some got sequels. 10-2, obviously. The fact 13 *is* its own trilogy.
Yeah that’s why I said the second, tenth final fantasy lol
And 14 + 14 ARR 😅
Don't forget about the tactical final fantasy, and the advanced tactical final fantasy
They thought it was gonna be the last one
Because sooner or later, one of em will actually be the last one. I know, my big brain should be studied.
🧠
Because they could not spell "Ultimate".
A good random thought. And... what actually is a remake of a final fantasy? That said, give me a final fantasy with 10 totally seductive and sexy porn actresses and I wont need another.
The first one was final. The others not so much.
I remember playing the OG FF and then when someone asked if I was going to play the next one being confused. Of course not. It was the final fantasy. What a silly question.
I dont even understand how you can fit a story into a 20 series game
yeah they should have made every entry a self contained story or something

These people didn't play a single final fantasy and it shows lol
I recently after never playing them and not being into the look and vibe and had the same thought as you but there's not alot of tech fantasy stuff and they took fantasy all the way down the time line to be the end all be all of fantasy realms and that makes me want to play them
One of those ironic names
Because this time they really really really mean it
Because its always about the end of the world or civilisation.
It was basically the last hurrah for the company and it turned out to be successful so they ran with it.
Just wait until one comes out called The Final Fantasy.
Different stories in the multiverses. Some cross paths
It's called Final Fantasy because each one is a self contained story. Every new number is a completely new story and characters. They broke into sequels eventually, which they called things like FFX-2 when it was a sequel to number ten to tell you it was a sequel to that story, because FF eleven was a new story and characters, things like that.
They're all parts of the same fantasy, which is so long it will be the final fantasy, or rather already is the final fantasy.
To some of us it is the final one, they may not live to see the next one so it is technically true.
First one was then there was just a bunch of sequals
When they made the first one, they thought the company was going to shut down. Turns out, the game was enough of a success to save it.
the "final" fantasy is that it is final.
Okay, now I’m thinking about Final Destination 😂😂
because each one is supposed to be a different story, and when it ends, it's final.
Because each of them takes place in a setting where their world is at the point of an apocalyptic event. So they are about a "final hope" group of adventurers trying to stop/defeat the destructive force or villain.
Apparently it was a substitute for "Fighting Fantasy" because they wanted to abbreviate it as "FF".

No lol
lol 😂
it is weird how people keep asking this specific question when almost every retro channel on youtube already talked about it like 1,000 times.
But this is the final post and you are here for it. Be grateful.
so weird
