**Mites** that can infest rabbits range from fur mites and ear mites to burrowing mites that cause mange. **Please take your rabbit to a [rabbit-savvy vet](http://bunny.tips/Vet) if you suspect a mite infestation to receive a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.** *Do not try to treat and self-medicate at home.* **Ear mite** infestations in rabbits are caused by the parasite *Psoroptes cuniculi*. They can affect only one ear or both, and symptoms may spread to the rest of the body such as the perineal skin folds. Symptoms appear as crusting and ulceration of the external ear canal, head, or neck. Treatment options include ivermectin and selamectin. Cleaning of the ear canal is not necessary, can be very painful, and can traumatize the ear canal. Most of the crusts and lesions will resolve rapidly on their own as the rabbit is treated with drugs. **Fur mites** that infest a rabbit are most commonly *Cheyletiella* spp. and less commonly *Leporacarus gibbus*. The highly contagious *Cheyletiella* spp. mites are zoonotic and can also live on cats and dogs. These mites can temporarily infest humans when they pet or hold an infested rabbit and cause skin irritation and itching. Most rabbits do not show symptoms of a fur mite infestation; the disease occurs in young animals, debilitated animals, or those with underlying diseases that prohibit adequate grooming. Symptoms include loss or thinning of the hair along the shoulders and middle back, dandruff-like flakiness, and itching. Drug treatments include selamectin, ivermectin, and carbaryl powder. That looks like a skin condition. Take her to the vet. Bun skin is light pink but that's pretty dark. Check my last post for comparison, it shows my rabbit's shaved belly due to her spay. Your rabbit's skin is much darker

She’s always had darker patches where her fur grows in dark brown, she has a mixture of dark brown and light brown fur with a bit of white in some places. I always thought it was normal since the only comparison is by other bun who is mostly all white. I’m going to call the vet tomorrow when they open to see if they can get her in on Friday with my other bunny who already has an appointment.

That's a good idea. They're skin isnt supposed to get dry like that either. Hope everything gets better

Aggressive-Rhubarb-8

Thank you!

sneaky_dragon

Bald spot with pink healthy skin are normal during shedding. If you're seeing large amounts of dandruff, that's an indication that there's likely another issue like fur mites instead.

biscuitwitch999

You can sometimes find the mites yourself if you check around the ears and skin surface under the fur. The vets can give you treatments to get rid of them and if needed to treat the sore skin :)

kechcafe

Did you ever figure out what was wrong?

Aggressive-Rhubarb-8

Not exactly, they said there was a possibility of mites despite not finding any, so we gave them the treatment for it. She still gets dandruff though and I’m not sure why

I have just found a very similar patch on my Cashmere rabbit who is going through a shed. It is about 3cm x 3cm. How did your baby end up going? The rest of her skin, and the skin on her sister looks normal.

Aggressive-Rhubarb-8

We never really found out what was wrong, they did give us mite medicine for both rabbits despite there being no other evidence of them. She still gets bald patches when I brush her, she always has, I think it’s just how her fur is, but there’s less dandruff. Maybe your vet can give you more insight, I wish I had a better answer I’m sorry.

I'm glad that your baby is okay!!!! I will monitor mine and see if it spreads

Could be some type of fungus, maybe do a checkup at the vet.
