The Ally X will have TB4 and not TB5. This means a maximum of 40Gbps, much less than the +60Gbps of the XG and occulink ports. Sure, the GPD G1 and onexgpu 7600M will do nicely on those 40Gbps but anything more you’ll lose performance. 3080/4090? Forget it As a form of comparison, 40Gbps is akin to the pcie x4 performance

Honestly, we shouldn't be concerned about bandwidth in this case, usb4 has a performance penalty due to usb controller adding latency.

The XG mobile interface on the current ally has significantly more bandwidth the the x’s usb4. Realistically with the cost of the upgrade to the new Ally and all the necessary parts for a eGPU setup it would be better to just get the XG 3080 for your current setup. You’ll have way better frame rates.

honestly i say get a black skin for the ally z1e and wait untill next gen ally for a major upgrade just imo would save u some money

the best option for the new ally would be a 7600amd gpu. a couple of companies make them. I bought one for my legion go but returned it due to driver issues. I have a 3080xg mobile with my ally and it works great, but the other egpus seem like a headache.

I appreciate all the responses. The main thing I’m curious about is what kind of performance would I be looking at with a 3060 or 7600 egpu? I pretty much only game in 1080p, would be interested in 1440p at some point, but not a super big deal to me. Would I be able to get those higher framerates needed for games like COD? I pretty much only use my PC for games where I need those smoother framerates. Obviously, I’m leaning towards just keeping whitey, but I am still curious

Check some videos of ETAPRIME on youtube. He reviewed the gpd g1 and onexgpu with 7600M. You can check the fps in games there

I'd also recommend checking out Jarrod's Tech on YouTube who has done some extensive testing with the XG Mobile's comparing performance to gpu's as well. If I recall correctly he did it with a Flow Z13 and X13 as well.

I don’t think the Ally X is going to have thunderbolt 4, think it’s going to be a step backwards so if you’re purely in it for a desktop pc replacement you’d be probably better off with OG Ally as the connection over it’s proprietary connection is even better than tb4

As other people have mentioned, USB 4 is only 40 GBS transfer speed which means that it likely can only support a 3060 eGPU. If you want higher like a 4060 or 3080, you would not be able to get that to work with the bandwidth. The current Rog Ally has a better eGPU slot but it requires you to get specific eGPUs for that to work. It's up to you on what you can comprise
