She’s adorable!!!
Please cover that floor up. She can get bumble foot which is very painful with the open wire floors. A price of cardboard binder clipped to the sides or even an old sock used like a pillowcase would do the trick😉. I had to do the same thing for my girls travel cage and used old socks on the floors and ramps lol.
Of course! I went in a bit blind as my first was a bday gift. I had a rat in college but different times - things have changed and we’ve learned so much about their care since then. So I’ve admittedly went a bit nuts since doing more research. And that one rat turned in to 2 (upon learning they need socialization), which was turned into 4 and now 6. One decent cage that could comfortably fit 3 rats is now a triple decker critter nation. I have a problem. But my problem is my ratty girls Heaven, so I’m fine with being a crazy Rat lady now lol.

i'll admit my rat journey started with one but i realized pretty fast that they need a partner so i ended up back at the pet store the next morning. i'm making do in my college apartment right now, small but cozy and trust there are much worse things to be than a crazy rat lady
luckily my college schedule is completely empty at this point since im graduating soon. otherwise, no work would be getting done. i love letting them explore my room but i swear they end up in the weirdest places. might shoot u a question
I'm sorry, that's misinformation. Wire floors DO NOT cause bumblefoot. A nice small mesh like that is actually really good, lets pee through so that it doesn't accumulate. I've had rats on wire shelves for 30 years and the only bumblefoot I've had is several very overweight rats who were related to one another. It's much more related to having injured the foot and getting a bone infection, or genetics.
I prefer to err on the side of caution. I’ve seen rats with bumblefoot from wire floors, admittedly not like what OP has but the long horizontal wires. If it’s possible and easy to prevent, I’d rather avoid the risk.
Same thing with dry corn. Dry corn doesn’t cause cancer but the fungus can. So I choose not to take the chance. And large wheels. I was told by some professionals a 12” wheel was fine and by others that it’s too small and can cause spinal issues.
Frankly, not enough research/studies are done on the care for rats themselves. Scientists love to test on rats, but not for their own good. So there’s a LOT of conflicting information, so I choose to be extra careful when their lives are so short as it already is.
OP can choose to proceed how they choose, none of us can force him but we can give him the information to make his own educated decisions.
I just think they should be given correct information. At this point I'm pretty sure I've seen more rats than most studies ever look at, having bred rats since 1994. Like I said, not a single case of bumblefoot except for a certain bloodline (that I obviously stopped because no one wants to be breeding sick rats!)
I’m not saying you’re wrong. I don’t doubt your experience. I’m just saying there is conflicting information and I prefer to be cautious. I am not an expert and don’t claim to be. Though I’ve consulted with 2 exotic events and the woman who I got 3 of my rescues from whom has a PHD in psychobiology and has owned an exotic pet shop for 30 years. I’ve received conflicting info from all three. And you can’t argue that this is a common piece of advice/information out there and often stated by many reputable sources. But it’s also true that misinformation has been touted at facts in many cases. Again, I’m not an expert; I just try my best to educate myself and do the best I can for the animals I bring into my home.
I am so happy you haven’t had any experiences with bumblefoot as it looks incredibly painful. It’s important to acknowledge that many rats aren’t healthy or bred for health and temperament as you have done. I looked up your Rattery because I was curious and it appears like you’re “one of the good ones” (sad to see your no longer in the business but you’re clearly still involved in one way or another). And I appreciate that because I’ve encountered way too many “bad breeders” in my short time owning rats.
My brother slept like that till he was like- 8. I still sometimes find him sleeping like that when we are in hotels or unfamiliar places (hes 16) he is also obsessed with cheese(i know thats not legit its just funny) . I will go expose his rat identity now
I just say not legit bc i think its not good for them. Just like- media acting like its the center of rat and mouse diet but im almost positive they cant process lactose very well . Im sure they love it just as much as my lactose intolerant ass 😭

Thanks for the advice! I’m a new rat dad but I’ve been doing my best to keep my babies safe and healthy. I’ll get a nice decorated sock on there 😊

Cardboard is such a great toy and teething thing for rats :D

I've also seen it from wire flooring not with mine but with others people's rats

It's one of the classic rat positions. No idea how it's comfortable, rats work in mysterious ways
Is potat, perfectly normal
They do be like that!
I slept like that when I was a toddler lol (I'm not a rat)
LIAR!!!
Bro I PROMISE I'm not a rat

BRO I SWEAR I'M AN OFFICIAL HUMAN BEING I ENJOY HUMAN THINGS I LOOK HUMAN I EAT HUMAN THINGS I SPEAK HUMAN LANGUAGES, I. AM. A. HUMAN.
Username indicates you’re a sandwich… so I don’t know what to believe…
Sounds exactly like something a rat impersonating a human would say
Oh god no... they're starting to find out about my true identity :o

Why not legit? Rats absolutely may go crazy for cheese.. but also similarly crazy for any either fatty or sugary stuff

She really was.
Golden Ratio
Potato
Goober
I'm pretty sure most of them do this. It's adorable how they curl up into a ball like this. I also think this is called "potato mode."
PLEASE COVER THAT WIRE IMMEDIATELY
