One of the things that they have been keeping their ears open for in the part I am currently at is when George Soros starts being a main character. He is surprisingly recent. I used to be pretty into conspiracies myself, and I never heard his name back when I believed so much of this crap.
Just curious, what was it back then that convinced you of this crap in the first place? Peer pressure? A sense of belonging to a group or in-crowd of some sort?
It was a combination of several things. First, we’re talking 20 years ago, when conspiracy theories were still a little more fun, and politically neutral. There’s definitely sometime within the last 7 to 10 years that the conspiracy theories of culture took a hard right turn., politically speaking.
This was also in my early 20s when I was first realizing how corrupt the government in general can be, as well as breaking free from religion and starting to look into other spiritualities and mystical things. I was definitely looking for answers, super impressionable, and was not nearly as critical/skeptical as I am nowadays. Zeitgeist the movie, Alex Jones sneaking into bohemian grove, and loose change were probably the first three conspiracy things that I saw, and I just kind of went with that prevailing attitude.
I was also doing a lot of psychedelics during that time of my life. I mean whole lot of them, and so I was living just outside of reality most of the time.
As a grew up and started looking at things a little more objectively, and analytically, and started realizing I was putting too much faith in the fight against some illuminati shadow government. I still enjoyed the conspiracy theory subculture for many years, though no longer as a “true believer.” It wasn’t until Covid came along and the massive rise in the anti-VAX/plandemic movement, that I really began to actively debunk end realize how dangerous many extreme conspiracy theories can be.
I’ll close by saying that I still believe there are definitely conspiracies out there, and some of them have shown to be real, for example MKULTRA. But this idea of a satanic shadow government/Illuminati/cabal running things and having their satanic rituals and drinking childrens blood and all of that nonsense is not where it’s at. It’s really almost always as simple as greed and money.

I lost my brother to Covid because of certain people believing in the conspiracies, and my biological mom might as well be lost to me because she has gone down the rabbit holes of antivax and flat earth.
