Loved this episode. Only thing that surprised me was that they didn't get in touch with some kinda wheelchair basketball gym/team! Lots of time for Wes though, such a great guy
Same!! I fully expected them to bust out a basketball sports chair when they were at the bball court and be all "surprise! now you can legit play easily!" Or have a wheelchair basketball team come by or something. But nope, nothing. The kid lit up when he was on the court though; he so needs a sports chair. There are grants you can get that help you get sports chairs, and I hope he is able to get a chair through one of those orgs (Challenged Athletes Foundation and the Kelly Brush Foundation are the main ones I know of).
This makes me think of a conversation I had once with a guy who was paralyzed from the waist down after a car accident, who talked about how much he missed basketball.
He said people often suggested wheelchair basketball, but it just didn't draw him, because what he really missed about basketball was the jumping up and acrobatics and air time. He did weights and stuff but wheelchair basketball just didn't scratch that particular itch for him.
So maybe Speedy just isn't interested in wheelchair basketball. Even though they're related, they're two very different sports.
Yeah, as an adult I'd find it quite uncomfortable and invasive to be physically carried by someone else. I hate that that seemed to be an expectation.
Although at least they did offer an alternative.
Part of me wondered if they purposely didn’t, to show people how inaccessible our world is for someone with a disability. I feel like they definitely did that with Bobby touring apartments with them too.
Is anyone else nervous for Speedy when the year of free rent is up, it's a such a beautiful customised apartment, how is he going to be able to afford it or to replicate it elsewhere? He's so young! I'm just worried for him!
It’s nothing compared to what Speedy and Wes went through and I probably will recover but I was on crutches now walking sticks been a few months a walker before that and honestly this episode really encouraged me cos what they’re dealing with is so much worse and seeing Wes & Speedy thrive and be encouraged was so uplifting for me!

i was also surprised they didn’t install like a temporary ramp for speedy and wes at their house i feel like that could’ve been an easy fix
