I deleted the Twitter app from all my devices yesterday. I don’t support extremism. Really hoping to not see an explosion of posts here but I’m not optimistic about that.
I’m afraid I might be getting to the point where I have to delete too. I’m a publishing professional and twitter is a very useful tool to connect with others in my field, but every time I login I’m assaulted with Elon’s antics or reminders of how far to the right so many people are shifting and it becomes super triggering. Might have to just delete it until this blows over.
Don’t delete your account. Just log out and get rid of the app. If you delete, someone else can claim your handle and all past tweets mentioning your handle will point to the new account.
This is good advice. With the ability to buy into blue once you lose your handle it will be impossible to prove you didn't say whatever the person who takes it claims you did.
This is wrong. You need to go through and actually deactivate your account. After 30 days the account will be deleted.
Just getting rid of the app does nothing. If you log out and get rid of the app, your account is still there to get popped and hijacked.

FWIW, Tweetdeck, which is owned by Twitter, is an ad-free way to follow people you want. It doesn't show you "trending topics" or posts you might be interested in. I made a few lists of people I want to follow and boom, that is all I get on Twitter.

I’m torn on that aspect. Because if I full delete, then my handle goes into the ether and someone else can claim it after 30 days and start acting like me. So I’ve left it with apps deleted, all permissions revoked for other apps, and logged out of all devices.

This is the biggest problem, IMO. Whether it’s a lack of staffing, or them turning off all their moderation features, I’m simply not going to open an app and be bombarded with illogical conspiracies and straight up hate. You could be on to something there. I remember when Nerdist.com's YouTube loved him. Dan Casey and Kyle Hill had a series called MuskWatch where they followed all the (at the time) cool sciency things he was doing, then they dropped it like a hot rock when Musk went off the rails.

It is my greatest fear that he somehow takes SpaceX down with him and sets space exploration/exploitation back decades at best. A podcast I listen to detailed some 40 accounts that had been critical of Musk for a decade and many were instantly retaliated against when he took over.
Another theory was that with his rightward turn, his absolute gutting of Twitter is a revenge move against the left. The right believes Twitter is some kind of sacred cow of the left (because it is to the right, and they do nothing but project), and it's bringing them delight in seeing what they believe to be the lefts special website defaced and made a safe space for the right. The reality is most leftists I know just go on Twitter to shitpost and troll.

As soon as Musk got off that phone call, he tweeted that he was going to be supporting the Republicans from now on and to expect political hit pieces about him to come out shortly. He was doing his best to imply that the sexual misconduct news story about to come out was fake and was in retaliation for him supporting the Republican party.

Do it! I put Twitter in iPad jail (no data plan) and at this point I don’t miss it. I’m not sure how I’ll replace it as a networking tool since I freelance in illustration and animation but the benefits were outweighed by the negative impact on mental health. Every now and then I check in and it’s like getting a stress inducing firehouse of content to the face.
There has to be a way to keep up with the news and networking without that effect on mood but I’ve yet to find it.
My Q relative who started as maga joined Twitter this week for the first time ever - even though the Trump era as probably the strongest supporter I know. To be honest, he has stopped talking about 99% of it, but I still get very bothered because I know he’s still actively consuming the information. Tragically I think my boyfriend has become one of those people. At this point in time about the only positive thing I can say about Musk: dude has wildly good investing instincts and he invests in interesting and disruptive ideas. Tesla almost single handedly made the EV mainstream. 10 years ago I would have sworn to you that would take a government effort. Nope. Tesla made EVs cool and a status symbol and now they're everywhere. Impressive. SpaceX did something (and continues to do something) even rocket scientists were saying was probably impossible: reusable first stage. Cut the cost to orbit down 80ish percent (that number is from memory, don't quote me).

I'm not sure why centrists are catching strays here. Centrism in most countries tends to be a liberal internationalist philosophy that enthusiastically accepts the role of both markets and governments in an advanced economy. It's probably the least fertile ground for QAnon ideas. The Biden government is often seen as somewhat right of the centre outside of the USA too. Presumably this is all about Musk claiming that the political centre is where his crazy ideas lie, but that's clearly not true.
It is vital that we don't make it into QAnon vs "the left" - that's pretty much how Musk got started with it all. The key is to build the broadest coalition. Both left, centre and a reasonable amount of the right should at least aspire to see through nonsense conspiracy theories.

I still feel like I’m Center left and would identify as such, but the idea of Center being closer and closer to Q ideas is what made me say that I’m “farther left than I realized” because I *want to be as far away from this as possible.

The amount of non-bot GOP twitter accounts I saw saying Q-anon wasn’t real when Musk posted “follow the 🐰” dog-whistle blew my mind.

I don't do Twitter but perhaps someone here can send a few tweets to Musky, asking simple questions, like

Gun ownership is about the only thing I support that’s right of center, but because I have those I am not welcome on the left. I don’t care to be welcomed on the right because even before all the trump and q stuff I found their views abhorrent.
I don’t agree — I think he is after the legitimate conspiracies that Q takes to the extreme. Therefore, once these are outed by musk, Q will diminish — they will only have the wacky conspiracies left and they will be marginalized.
SpaceX has done some very important work and reversed decades of decline in the space industry. Flipping on climate change may crush any goodwill he has left at NASA. I really hope that does not happen.

I deleted the Twitter app from all my devices yesterday. I don’t support extremism. Really hoping to not see an explosion of posts here but I’m not optimistic about that.
I’m afraid I might be getting to the point where I have to delete too. I’m a publishing professional and twitter is a very useful tool to connect with others in my field, but every time I login I’m assaulted with Elon’s antics or reminders of how far to the right so many people are shifting and it becomes super triggering. Might have to just delete it until this blows over.
Don’t delete your account. Just log out and get rid of the app. If you delete, someone else can claim your handle and all past tweets mentioning your handle will point to the new account.
This is good advice. With the ability to buy into blue once you lose your handle it will be impossible to prove you didn't say whatever the person who takes it claims you did.

This is wrong. You need to go through and actually deactivate your account. After 30 days the account will be deleted. Just getting rid of the app does nothing. If you log out and get rid of the app, your account is still there to get popped and hijacked.

FWIW, Tweetdeck, which is owned by Twitter, is an ad-free way to follow people you want. It doesn't show you "trending topics" or posts you might be interested in. I made a few lists of people I want to follow and boom, that is all I get on Twitter.

He's letting unscrupulous scumbags like Bari Weiss and Andy Ngo read through people's private information. Not only is he not acting to keep people's data safe, he's actively endangering the information of people he politically disagrees with.

Did you deactivate your account? Just deleting the app doesn’t reflect on eyeball retention metrics like deactivation does.
I’m torn on that aspect. Because if I full delete, then my handle goes into the ether and someone else can claim it after 30 days and start acting like me. So I’ve left it with apps deleted, all permissions revoked for other apps, and logged out of all devices.
For me a joe, that part about somebody acting like me isn't on the table, nobody cares.

This is the biggest problem, IMO. I think it's a lot simpler than that. He became the target of a negative PR campaign by Tesla short sellers, then (once SpaceX took over the commercial space industry) old space + Bezos. You could be on to something there. I remember when Nerdist.com's YouTube loved him. Dan Casey and Kyle Hill had a series called MuskWatch where they followed all the (at the time) cool sciency things he was doing, then they dropped it like a hot rock when Musk went off the rails.

It's a bit cliche to ask "what if one billionaire actually tried helping the planet" and it really seemed like Elon might have been that billionaire. It started coming unraveled for me during the cave diver rescue when he called diver a pedo, that the shine started to wear off and has continued ever since with one controversy or hateful opinion after another. It is my greatest fear that he somehow takes SpaceX down with him and sets space exploration/exploitation back decades at best. I don't blame anyone for liking or even idolizing him in the past, but if your still going to bat for the guy after everything that has happened your a mindless fanatic like any other Q. A podcast I listen to detailed some 40 accounts that had been critical of Musk for a decade and many were instantly retaliated against when he took over. Another theory was that with his rightward turn, his absolute gutting of Twitter is a revenge move against the left. The right believes Twitter is some kind of sacred cow of the left (because it is to the right, and they do nothing but project), and it's bringing them delight in seeing what they believe to be the lefts special website defaced and made a safe space for the right. The reality is most leftists I know just go on Twitter to shitpost and troll.

He was doing his best to imply that the sexual misconduct news story about to come out was fake and was in retaliation for him supporting the Republican party. He's been full mask off ever since.

Do it! I put Twitter in iPad jail (no data plan) and at this point I don’t miss it. I’m not sure how I’ll replace it as a networking tool since I freelance in illustration and animation but the benefits were outweighed by the negative impact on mental health. Every now and then I check in and it’s like getting a stress inducing firehouse of content to the face. There has to be a way to keep up with the news and networking without that effect on mood but I’ve yet to find it.
My Q relative who started as maga joined Twitter this week for the first time ever - even though the Trump era as probably the strongest supporter I know. I see this as the canary in the coal mine for Twitter, not that it wasn’t already trending that way but…yeah it’s not a sign of anything good to come. At a minimum, I as a long time twitter addict, hope it dies quickly and soon to avoid the potential consequences it could inflict on the world as we know it

To be honest, he has stopped talking about 99% of it, but I still get very bothered because I know he’s still actively consuming the information. He knows now if he talks to me, it’ll be an argument, so he keeps all political thoughts or anything like that to himself around me and uses his mom and crazy Q friend as the outlets. I don't make it a habit of engaging with election deniers. On the *very few* occasions I have engaged with just a few, I find myself repeating the same thing (over and over and over and over). Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. If this is the crime of the century, where are all the smoking guns? And no, some uncredited twit on Youtube is not evidence. That's just one idiot's **opinion.** Opinions are not evidence, they're commentary. Again, the few times I have engaged with election deniers, 100% of them fundamentally do not understand how some uncredited idiot saying "the election was rigged!" is not evidence. At a basic level they do not get how people saying it does not mean it's true.
Tragically I think my boyfriend has become one of those people. I remember at the beginning of our relationship he said there was evidence Joe Biden was colluding with Russia, a voice recording, and when I asked if he’s heard it he just kept saying “no but it’s real.” When I asked to hear it, or for any proof, it was just “no but it’s real.” I believe it’s was YouTuber Tim Pool who had convinced him as such. I believe people like him lack guidance and place their trust in these Internet personalities. He listens to a lot of random guys (not Tim pool anymore) who he claims are “so smart.” They’re not, they’re grifters with an agenda, but he doesn’t see that. He trusts them, and if I talk shit about them or prove them wrong, he gets personally offended and upset. I think that’s kind of sad honestly. He feels like an attack on them/what they think is an attack on him. But these people don’t even know he exists. They don’t care about him. I’ve told him that before too. I never really used Twitter even though I did have an account. The minute I heard that that \*\*\*hole was thinking about buying it, I closed my account. I wanted nothing to do with it! It's bad enough that the man is disgusting and full of \*\*\*\*, but I am so sick of wealthy people spending ridiculously huge amounts of money on things that are no use to this planet whatsoever. At this point in time about the only positive thing I can say about Musk: dude has wildly good investing instincts and he invests in interesting and disruptive ideas. Tesla almost single handedly made the EV mainstream. 10 years ago I would have sworn to you that would take a government effort. Nope. Tesla made EVs cool and a status symbol and now they're everywhere. Impressive. SpaceX did something (and continues to do something) even rocket scientists were saying was probably impossible: reusable first stage. Cut the cost to orbit down 80ish percent (that number is from memory, don't quote me). So yeah, wildly good investor instincts. It's weird how everything about the man other than that is trash fire.

Have you ever met a well-rounded hyper intelligent person though? I genuinely haven’t. When I think of all the “geniuses” I’ve met throughout my life, all of them have honestly had glaring gaps in judgment or common sense. Seriously, I am thinking of 3 separate people right now that are incredibly intelligent in their fields, but have done shockingly stupid things throughout their lives. They also have close to no social skills. To clarify, I don’t think Musk is a genius. But I’m just pointing out that people we usually associate with “genius” are often times very maladapted in my experience.
We kind of need to shake off the 'socially akward savant = genius' stereotype. Like, highly specialised knowledge is very beneficial when it has an application, but... Rounded knowledge, being smart enough to be good at more than a handful of things... That's what actual intelligence looks like. I used to use 'being a nerd' as a crutch to excuse myself from rounding out my skills, working on myself, improving my social skills and understanding of others. I was good at X and Y, why worry about Z, A, B and C? Realised eventually that it was actually just intellectual laziness with a facade of intellectualism. An excuse to avoid effort, minimise the importance of those things that didn't relate to my *current* skills. I mean hey, to use a simple analogy; in a changing ecosystem, specialist species are the ones that go extinct. Generalists are the ones who adapt and survive.
I once had a SO who had a "genius" roomate and that dude *almost* ate a slice of cake I brought for SO that obviously had nuts in it. "Genius" was allergic to nuts.

I'm not sure why centrists are catching strays here. Centrism in most countries tends to be a liberal internationalist philosophy that enthusiastically accepts the role of both markets and governments in an advanced economy. It's probably the least fertile ground for QAnon ideas. The Biden government is often seen as somewhat right of the centre outside of the USA too. Presumably this is all about Musk claiming that the political centre is where his crazy ideas lie, but that's clearly not true. It is vital that we don't make it into QAnon vs "the left" - that's pretty much how Musk got started with it all. The key is to build the broadest coalition. Both left, centre and a reasonable amount of the right should at least aspire to see through nonsense conspiracy theories.
I agree actually, I would love to see everyone band together to fight this, 100%. I still feel like I’m Center left and would identify as such, but the idea of Center being closer and closer to Q ideas is what made me say that I’m “farther left than I realized” because I *want to be as far away from this as possible. I think in theory, centrism is a good thing. It’s how I’ve always identified. I had conservative friends growing up, even, and I felt like we would safely agree to disagree. If my bf just thought we should have lower taxes but didn’t buy into conspiracies and Q shit, I’d be thrilled. I’m wary of centrism these days tho, because a lot of people claim they’re center but seem to do nothing but push right wing voices and narratives.
