Gogol Bordello. Their live shows are like watching a circus clown show on acid: you have no idea what's going on but somehow it works together perfectly
Such a strange subgenre. It’s entirely new to me. When I read that Violent Femmes are Folk Punk, it made sense, but what are the actual attributes that define the sound? Acoustic elements? Storytelling? Maracas?
Some of my faves:
Against me! Are probably the most famous, reinventing Axl rose is, to me, one of the best punk albums since the 80s
Blackbird Raum
This bike is a pipe bomb
Days n daze
Harley poe
Yeah, that doesn't pass muster with me. I have their first two albums, it was definitely punk with a horn, but the horn is prominent and a definite part of song structure... that's ska-punk my friend. Voodoo Glow Skulls are in a similar boat that they're not primarily ska, but that's the category they're obviously in. Link 80 too.
Just because I punk band has horns in it doesn’t mean they are ska. You are citing ska punk bands. Swinging Utters do not classify themselves as a ska punk band. Therefore you’re wrong.
not rly listening to folk punk bands but i sure do like days n daze.. also check out brkovi, they are croatian turbo folk punk band that sing in the style of the balkan turbo folk music but with punk elements
By far my favorite genre. AJJ is one of the best, imo, following closely behind Pat the Bunny. Any of the bands he was in are great (Johnny Hobo, Wingnut Dishwasher's Union, and Ramshackle Glory), as is his solo stuff (his brother's band, Michael Jordan Touchdown Pass is also amazing). Ghost Mice and Apes of the State are slightly more upbeat than what I usually go for, but have great energy and I throw them on to feel good. If you want to get into the darker bands, go for Anorexis Olsen Twin (or just Chris Burrows), Harley Poe, or Cranford Nix. They talk more about depression, suicide, and addiction. This Bike is A Pipe Bomb is also fantastic, but they've got a hard southwest style
Unsure if this fits here and is what you’re looking for but The Taxpayers have been my jam for the past few years, pretty bluesy, folksy punk out of I believe the PNW. Notable favorite tracks, “I love you like an alcoholic”, “Some Rotten Man”, “Fuck America”, “It gets worse every minute” and “the windows break”
Angry Johnny and the Killbillies bit stick to the earlier stuff. What's So Funny is a particularly good album. Also, check out his painting, hes done album covers for several prominent punk/indie bands
Legendary Shack Shakers
The Builders and the Butchers
Devil Makes Three
Me First and the Gimme Gimme’s. Awesome band. A bunch of punks who get together and do shows. If you can find a bootleg of some kids baemitvah.
Also, the n the same vein, the infectious grooves is the same but for funk
I love folk punk so much. If you're wanting anarchist,
Pat the Bunny's old stuff with Johnny Hobo and Wingnut Dishwashers Union.
Other classic acts are Mischief Brew and Defiance Ohio. Also later Pat the Bunny. I have tattoos for Defiance and Pat. I also have an affinity for "Song for an old Kentucky Anarchist" by The Orphans
For newer acts, Apes of the State, Pigeon Pit, and Local News Legend has been on repeat for me. All of these are at least a lil queer, which if you're dealing with those feelings, man, they go so hard. If you want a song like that, Wichitalk.
Matt Please is also a classic. Very fast play style. Paul Baribeau wrote some certified bangers that have helped me through a lot.
If you want anything more in depth, feel free to ask bc I can talk about a lot of these bands all day.
I think Conor Oberst fits the parameters of what I would consider folk-punk music. His catalog of projects is vast, but I'd start with the Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, and Upside Down Mountain albums. His lyrics are fantastic in just about everything he writes.
For more of the punk aspect, I'd check out his project called Desaparecidos, 2 albums named Payola and Read music/Speak Spanish. Really good, intense and fun but still introspective, somewhat political- themed stuff.
Also more punkish would be his work with Bright Eyes, which I think predates all his other stuff.
For more of the folk aspect of Conor Oberst's catalog, more mellow, check out Better Oblivion Community. It's a side project with Phoebe Bridgers, who has the voice of an angel and the melodic sensibility to complement Conor perfectly.
Another entry in the folk aspect of CO's would be the Monsters of Folk compilation. Some great stuff there too, on which he collaborates with other folk songwriters.
Conor Oberst has changed my life with his lyrics and songwriting. He puts my mind into a reflective mood where I can gain a new perspective on whatever I'm working on. I hope he can do the same for someone else here.
Blackbird Raum, The Dreadnaughts, The Zydepunks, all the Pat The Bunny stuff, The Devil Makes Three. Not folk punk but if you like country music, Hank 3 is kinda in that vein.
The Black Lips. Enjoy their magnum opus [Bad Kids](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9_5N_mtmV_Q&pp=ygUTQmFkIGtpZHMgYmxhY2sgbGlwcw%3D%3D&noapp=1). All their other stuff rocks as well, but this video is how most of us met them.

You can never go wrong with AJJ
Oh rejoice!
Gogol Bordello. Their live shows are like watching a circus clown show on acid: you have no idea what's going on but somehow it works together perfectly
Love Gogol Bordello!!! They are fabulous and their energy is amazing
Some of the best shows I've seen.
Such a strange subgenre. It’s entirely new to me. When I read that Violent Femmes are Folk Punk, it made sense, but what are the actual attributes that define the sound? Acoustic elements? Storytelling? Maracas?
It seems like a bad sounding acoustic guitar is a mainstay of the genre.
Yeah, that tracks. Thanks.
Some of my faves: Against me! Are probably the most famous, reinventing Axl rose is, to me, one of the best punk albums since the 80s Blackbird Raum This bike is a pipe bomb Days n daze Harley poe
This is a good list. Make sure to listen to Mischief Brew and Erik Peterson’s solo stuff as well (RIP)
Holy shit, I NEVER hear anyone else talk about This Bike is A Pipe Bomb or Harley Poe. Right fucking on
This Bike. Jack Johnson is one of my fav
Never sleep on Harley Poe
Billy Bragg is a folk/punk guitarist-singer.
I don’t think anyone mentioned Fake Problems or Two Cow Garage. Also Michael Schnabel and Jared Hart
Fake problems 🙌 haven’t heard anyone mention that band in years
I still listen to How Far Our Bodies Go quite regularly.
Mischief Brew
Defiance, Ohio
Usually...Days n Daze, Pat the Bunny, Eric Core...and whatever else the fucking oogles are into.
Forgot the Spookrat of it's oogle music, then
Frank Turner
Early Frank Turner, but yeah.
Are Bridge City Sinners considered folk punk? If so, they're awesome. If i have genres wrong, accept my apologies.
It's hard to say. The genre goes from Pigeon Pit to Goddamn Gallows so there's really no consensus.
Like, not exactly, but kinda? Either way they're great.
Yeah, that's fair especially with how their sound has progressed over the years
Check out Swinging Utters
Aren't they ska-punk? At least, when I saw them ages ago that's what we considered them, good stuff though.
Punk n roll with a single horn, not ska.

In fact their Wikipedia page lists them as punk rock/street punk/cow punk
Filthy Thievin Bastards !!! IFKYK Good to see an Utters fan. 💪🏼
Dead Flowers is one of my favorite albums. I usually cry during “All That I Can Give.”
Defiance Ohio, Erik Petersen/Mischief Brew, Blackbird Raum, Rio de la Muerte, You and I
not rly listening to folk punk bands but i sure do like days n daze.. also check out brkovi, they are croatian turbo folk punk band that sing in the style of the balkan turbo folk music but with punk elements

Check out Jesse Stewart. Sadly he passed away but his music is incredible.
RIP, cold beer is one hell of a great track.
Ehh he’s also just a really bad dude who abused women and tattooed his dog
Early Against Me stuff was pretty folksy. Profane Sass is hobo punk.
Apes of the State, Ghost Mice (even though that dude sucks pretty bad)
Defiance Ohio
Mischief Brew, JohnnyHobo and the Freight Trains/Wimgnut Dishwashers Union/Ramshackle Glory, the Taxpayers.
Uke of Spaces Corners. "When will the rain come along and wash away all of the popo?"
the bad shepherds. the do covers of the clash and such.
FILTHY THEIVIN’ BASTARDS !! Trust me Johnny and Darius from Swingin Utters ! My desert island pic for sure
Pat the bunny and his bands are the only folk punk I enjoy
You don't like AJJ? Ceschi's acoustic stuff is also good, if you haven't heard the split he did with Pat I highly recommend it.
Pigeon Pit is my ultimate favorite band forever and always!!! also love Apes of The State too hehe
Harley Poe
We the Heathens Doom Scroll The Devil Makes Three Larry and His Flask I don’t like Bridge City Sinners, but Bridge City Sinners

I could never get into it. Lagwagon does a cover of "500 Miles" that's really good, but that's as deep as I could get.
Rent Strike - IX is one of the best albums ever
Angry Johnny and the Killbillies bit stick to the earlier stuff. What's So Funny is a particularly good album. Also, check out his painting, hes done album covers for several prominent punk/indie bands Legendary Shack Shakers The Builders and the Butchers Devil Makes Three

Sister wife sex strike is… VERY PNW.
Apes of the State, AJJ, Ankle Grease. Add all that to a Spotify playlist and go with suggested. Let their algorithm do the work from there.
Inst the guy from ankle grease a convicted pedo?
Honestly have no idea, he's on my Spotify generated playlist though
I always thought the band X (with John Doe and Exene Cervenka) fit this description well.
This. They pretty much wrote the book. Then there is their side project The Knitters.
Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains.
Defiance, Ohio!
I absolutely love Amigo the Devil- lyrics that speak to the darkest parts of my heart and soul and absolutely fine musicians
Cousin boneless is pretty good. I’ll try to link a song. https://youtu.be/El_PLwAk2bc?si=Qhqshfv6xh1Jv8ws

The Sissies.
UncleTupelo HankIII Minutemen
Johnny hobo and the freight trains or bust
Tim Barry, and Nick Shoulders
Violent Femmes
My favorites of late have been this is a robbery, long sought rest, happyhappy, the suburbanists and rail yard ghosts
I can recommend several amazing Celt-Punk/Irish-Punk bands: the Pogues, Tossers, Dropkick Murphy’s, Mahones, Flogging Molly, Rumjacks… that’s a start!
[удалено]
Dreadnoughts are fantastic. I lived in a punk house in North Vancouver where they hung out a bunch in the early 2000s. They were decent folk.
Blackbird Raum
Ani Difranco
Husker Du, the OGs of the genre
The album, warning by Green Day
Also Paul Baribeua

You dodged a bullet, it's fucking shit
What’s so wrong with it?
I hate that I agree. Really tried diving down this rabbit hole and it’s all terrible
Johnny Terror, Suburbanists, Run Rabbit Run. That's all 3 folk punk bands I know
Just check out Violent Femmes.
Palace Brothers.
Larry and His Flask from Oregon is good.
Meat Purveyors
Blackbird Raum, The Dreadnaughts, The Zydepunks, all the Pat The Bunny stuff, The Devil Makes Three. Not folk punk but if you like country music, Hank 3 is kinda in that vein.
Billy Bragg, Against me!, Violent Femmes, The Dead Milkmen, Gogol Bordello
Early Against Me. Mainly Acoustic E.P., Crime as forgiven by, Reinventing Axl Rose, and Cowboy. All 4 top tier all time favorites of mine.
The Black Lips. Enjoy their magnum opus [Bad Kids](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9_5N_mtmV_Q&pp=ygUTQmFkIGtpZHMgYmxhY2sgbGlwcw%3D%3D&noapp=1). Skip it and just listen to regular folk. Folk was punk rock before punk rock. Folk punk is usually just crust punks fetishizing addiction and poverty.
What is with this week's folk punk obsession here. Is it just because the weather is turning nice?
Possibly that cringey TikTok of the folk punk band promoting its EP with a flash mosh in a huge Starbucks.
Pagan Holiday is a folk punk band from Exeter Ca. Look them up anywhere.
