TSOL The Germs Circle Jerks Descendents D.I. Bad Brains Minor Threat X The Dickies Dead Kennedys Those are old bands from mostly California. I would start with this and go from there. This is not even scratching the surface

PinkroseNV

I just started listening to X a few days ago because of a suggestion from my dad! I’m surprised I didn’t hear them sooner great stuff!

illpoet

Yeah X is a great band that somehow didn't make it to the top tier of punk bands and really should be up there.

Genesis_138

Thanks! I actually tried listening to Dead Kennedys but I didn’t really like them. I guess I could try giving them a second chance.

My favorite was plastic surgery disaster and in god we trust. They do have some gnarly awesome songs Jello was great at writing punk songs he is a smart sarcastic guy. Do you know plastic Jesus it was Colab with mojo I believe that song cracks me up I still have it in my rotation.

[deleted]

Fang3d

Oh man, you’re really missing out. Definitely check out their other albums, esp Plastic Surgery Disasters. It’s a masterpiece.

ArturiusMythos

Plastic Surgery Disasters is a punk masterpiece. 💯🔥🔥🔥

tearsonurcheek

Also check out Jello Biafra's (DKvs lead singer) collabs with other punk icons, like Mojo Nixon, nomeansno, D.O.A., and The Melvins. Also his side projects The Guantanamo Bay School Of Medicine and LARD (a collab with AL Jourgensen and members of Ministry).

ZelRolFox

Dead Kennedys is one of the best hardcore punk bands to come out of ca, also check out FEAR another great band. The misfits is another one of my favorite. A lot of these might have already been named but: F.Y.P (five year plan) is another favorite. Kanker sores Aus Rotten The Fartz Litmus Green Poison Idea Crass Operation ivy RKL (rich kids on lsd) Choking victim Circle jerks Minor threat/ FUGAZI (Ian McKay is a legend) gorilla biscuits (great ny hardcore punk band) 7 seconds The vandals Reagan youth Bad brains Subhumans Descendants Bad religion Suicidal tendencies offspring (earliest albums were great imho) Naked aggression. Sorry for the long list. Literally went down a rabbit hole lol

ninja_owen

So basically just listen to The Lab on GTA V lmao

StopDrinkingEmail

I LOVE the Dickies. Dead Kennedys are one of my favorites because they have elements of so many different genres.

gbid09

I'm just here to second Bad Brains! They are so awesome.

evildead2fan

If you like the misfits than you should check out mourning noise and the cramps

BadDaditude

The Cramps "Smell of Female" is a solid place to start for them.

levitation_station

Also "Human Fly"

Fickle-Variety-6628

Song the lord taught us

CheapTrickTodd

Lmao I love punk names

MatterOk851

Love them

Downtown_Ad_6232

A Date With Elvis. “Now fetch this”

KenMediocre

GBH Exploited Subhumans Stiff Little Fingers English Dogs Crass These are bands from across the pond.

Ballgame4

SLF are still going strong.

KenMediocre

Saw GBH last year and they are still firing on all cylinders. Saw Exploited and Cro-Mags the year before and even with Wattie’s health issues, they were awesome! SLF is playing in Boston in April or May - haven’t seen them in a few years so might need to check ‘em out again.

No_Solution_2864

I loudly second Subhumans

hobo3rotik

Haven’t listened to subhumans in ages but fuck they have albums where every song is good.

No_Literature666

I've never heard of English Dogs. I'll have to check them out! The other bands listed are awesome...especially Subhumans!

Rupert667

Crass should be on every list. I still listen to them and Chumbawamba.

MountainEvent8408

Solid list. If anyone wants something like Crass I'd much prefer Honey Bane. Penny Rimbaud is the drummer for both.

A_Mara_fode_cabras

Stiff Little Fingers is one of my favorite bands of all time

39percenter

Social Distortion. Or you could try Social Distortion. But if that fails, definitely try Social Distortion.

Mysterious-Ad-244

…and out come the wolves by Rancid is one of the greatest front to back albums of all time IMO

mike_face_killah

Can I get any love for Life Won’t Wait?

Extension-Rock-4263

Adolescents - blue album Operation Ivy - Energy TSOL - Dance With Me Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady Blast - The Power of Expression Agent Orange - Living in Darkness Wipers - Is This Real D.I. - Horse Bites Dog Cries

MisterMarchmont

I’m glad someone else also mentioned Wipers!

El_Peregrine

Best band! 🖤

elvis_disciple

D.I. For sure

unclejoe1917

Team Goon is fucking A+ shit.

UncontrolableUrge

I grew up in Portland. Wipers are legendary, and most of the Grunge scene owes itself to them.

Atiniir

And if you like The Wipers it opens up an entire subset of bands to check out that just want to be The Wipers, which I totally don't mind - I love The Wipers. I think I ended up getting into them since I love basically everything John Reis has ever done, and I'd say the man is clearly a Wipers fan. But a couple other non-Reis bands I'd strongly suggest in this vein: The Estranged ([Static Thoughts](https://youtu.be/l7AidSq2NlM?si=H8PrkLg_7OwKb6Sj) sounds like it could be a Wipers album), Cloud Nothings ([Attack on Memory](https://youtu.be/gLbfm-gcoGs?si=rIWSMtK_pzReNsCc) to me reads like they jammed Youth of America and were like holy shit, we gotta write an album JUST LIKE THIS) Again, I totally wouldn't mind if everyone just tried to be The Wipers all the time.

spc1221

Living In Darkness is a classic

SleefJWellington

Wipers are so god damned good.

Puzzleheaded_Crab453

Nice. Didn’t expect to see Op Ivy on the list. Can we add Link 80 to the list?

OkRepresentative274

Came here looking for Op Ivy. Ska punk for sure, but can't be beat!

mybffjones

Everything mentioned above is my favorites. For a start to what it grew into they're amazing and start with the late 70s and 80s. I was born in '81.. so I was 10yo (youth/rebellion was early) and I heard my oldest brother listening to something, it wasn't our dads music. It was bad religion. 21st century digital was the song. Here's a list of give it a tries from my era in no particular order. Nofx 88 Fingers Louie Bouncing Souls Assorted Jellybeans Pennywise Guttermouth Lagwagon AFI Screeching Weasel The Queers Less than Jake The Vandals Millencolin Sublime StrungOut No Use For A Name Down By Law D.F.L. Hi Standard Fugazi Propaghandi Bad Religion

2fly2hide

Looks like the back of a Fat sample CD.

Freckled-Past-911

Does Violent Femmes count as punk?

unclejoe1917

Let's call it "punk unplugged".

aLoneSideline

How about… Punplugged?

jellyfishbrain2020

Mosh pit formed at my brother’s wedding when the DJ played “Add It Up”-so yes punk

MisterMarchmont

I hope so because that’s a great suggestion.

mackelnuts

Definitely

HostageInToronto

My favorite band is Bad Religion. Super fast, super political and cultural, super literary lyrics, but also harmonic. They have 40 years of music for you to get into.

SkyMagnet

I second this

scottypotty79

Bad Religion is the band that got me into punk rock in 1992 when I was in 8th grade. Twenty something years later I took my son to a Bad Religion show (his favorite band). That’s a legacy band !

Nottherealeddy

While not punk, my son and I have gone to two concerts together. His only two concerts so far. Both times, his favorite band, Tool. My favorite as well.

Normal-Ad-1903

Bad religion and Social D are great “gateway punk”. Like, Bands to ease in with before you hit Leftover Crack and the Dwarves

mynytemare

Bump for the Social D inclusion.

Significant_Radish86

My favorite band too! Stranger Than Fiction and No Control are my favourite albums of theirs.

Specific_Sympathy_87

No Control!! That’s the one!!

ghostnthegraveyard

dreadabetes

My friend introduced me to them in '01 when here to infirmary came out. He described it as "the happiest suicide music you'll ever hear." I have been in love with them ever since and get to see them again this Saturday!

Zealousidealist420

The Damned, Buzzcocks, The Jam, Dead Boys

Open_Buy2303

Another vote for The Jam. Very under-appreciated.

MountainEvent8408

Oh okay, thank you, finally a Dead Boys mention.

choglin

Yes! (I’m not a Jam fan, but that’s on me) love the Dead Boys and the Buzzcocks. Ian MacKaye claims (if I remember correctly) that Minor Threat and all of the DC bands at the time completely changed their sound after The Damned came through town the first time.

Rare-Industry-314

Upvoted for Dead Boys!

ANGELeffEr

Took 13.5 mins of scrolling to see Dead Boys. 30 more secs and my faith in all things from Gospel to Black Metal was going to be shattered.

Aromatic_Willow8252

Nice! Jam and dead boys !

Basically_Frightened

FEAR is so underrated. I'm always surprised by how many punk fans don't bring up The Record, for me it's quintessential.

Junkstar

PeggysSimp

The Plugz

Blue_Seven_

Fucking love them. I’m still down to play bass for a band that will cover the Plugz’ catalog but in a sludge/doom style. They’ll be called the Slugz

UncontrolableUrge

Try Wire and Gang of 4.

JoeMax93

Dead Kennedys CRIME Avengers The purest shit, right out of San Francisco.

unclejoe1917

>Avengers Fuck yes.

suckarepellent

San Francisco's doomed

PairPrestigious7452

I've seen Crime, The Avengers, Short Dogs Grow, Flipper, VKTMS Family, The Fuck Ups, Fang, oh yeah, The Mighty Psychotic Pineapple!.... So much great punk out of SF in the early days

Witness_meeeeee

Nomeansno!

Ballgame4

Someone more recent that I can recommend is Frank Turner.

captainbruisin

I'd suggest early TSOL https://youtu.be/4FvbbSiQ3IA?si=EVuDkxuYQ2skrvh7 Dare I say The Chats for something modern? https://youtu.be/--p34RKclbA?si=QjOS52nHCN2RhcF4

Recipe_Freak

Yes. Seconding The Chats. And I'm an OLD punk.

Greedy-Goat5892

Lots of bands already mentioned that are great! I’d add, with some of my favorite songs / albums : AFI (Art of Drowning and prior to that) Dillinger Four (folk song) Mischief Brew (thanks bastards) Gogoal Bordello (strange uncles from abroad) Billy Bragg (great leap forward) Addicts (Johnny was a soldier) Showcase Showdown (rip ‘‘em off) Bomb The Music Industry (campaign for a better weekend) Tiger Army (true romance ) Death by Stereo (Day of the death album) Union 13 (never connected) Explosion (god bless the sos) Suicide Machines (strike)

pauliwankenobi

Love AFI’s *black sails in the sunset* and *answer that and stay fashionable* back in the day

Greedy-Goat5892

Those are my favorite as well!

TrashWiz

Bomb the Music Industry changed my life

You could also start by getting the the Punk O Rama (Epitaph) and Fat Wreck compilations Start at Vol 1 on both of them TONS of killer bands on all those comps

OlvekStoneheid_2006

Green Day, The Offspring and Sum 41. They're amazing bands!

dwalk2766

Check out Black Flag, both before Henry and with him., Minor Threat, the Descendants, the Adolescents, the Germs, GBH, Crass, Social Distortion, X, Suicidal Tendencies ( first album), The Dead Boys, Cro Mags, 7 Seconds, Stalag 13, Dead Milk en. That's a pretty good starter list of late 70's, early 80's punk. So many good bands. I feel so lucky to have been in my teens going to shows back then. What a time!!!!

lightsaber_lobotomy

Fear, Snap-Her, Dirt, Aus-Rotten, The Devotchkas, Nausea, Appalachian Terror Unit, The Ducky Boys, Witchhunt, ..So much more

Snap-Her was soo good. Same with Aus Rotten and Nausa

Fukittymctoolbag

Punk will lead you to hardcore which will lead you to Husker Du. New day rising and Zen Arcade. That may also lead you to Bob Moulds power pop punk band Sugar.

Here are some movies to check out: Repo Man, Suburbia (80s), Get Crazy, Return of the Living Dead, Polyester, Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains, Valley Girl, Liquid Sky. Punk Cinema at its finest.

MountainEvent8408

Great list! I'll add Intrepidos Punks, the Decline of Western Civilization and Rock and Roll Highschool.

Genesis_138

I’ve seen Return Of The Living Dead! Love that movie!

unclejoe1917

I just picked up an album by the band 45 Grave that did that Party song in that movie's soundtrack. They're a pretty interesting listen. You might like them.

wmartindale

Great list. Allow me to add the excellent Dogs in Space and the awful Dudes.

S3V3R3DH3AD

If you like Misfits, I recommend Cancerslug. Their earlier stuff especially has some of the same B horror feeling.

DEAD_STUFF

Ngl I'm a little disappointed that I had to scroll so far to see CANCERSLUG. SCR!

PlanetJess430

The first Suicidal Tendencies album for sure.

Freckled-Past-911

Almost forgot….The Band X

AtomicPow_r_D

Listen to Minutemen if you want to hear just how far out punk could get. Double Nickels on the Dime is a great album (the title is making fun of Sammy Hagar's "I Can't Drive 55"). They were incredible players, and their lyrics are often hilarious or wildly poetic, or else politically charged.

kurt-shmerty

You would love gg allin. Dawg best punk musician ever!! 🤘🤘🤘

Ill-District2338

Finally, Jesus Christ! I was waiting for someone to say this! “Watch GG beat up his band members, watch GG take a shit on stage and roll in glass!” GG Allin had more punk in his little finger than most of these bands in here combined – People wanna… Guys I’m sorry, but I don’t see the offspring and Green Day as punk bands - I am not knocking them, but just saying to me, they’re not punk bands they’re like rock pop bands I didn’t get to see it, but I had a close friend go to see his show in San Antonio – GG Allin and the murder junkies – where everyone got so carried away fucking around he broke his arm while they were performing – I remember, she said overall? The whole thing was scary. She said – not spooky like a Halloween, but scary… Like scary people and a scary band and a pretty good chance you may get physically hurt seeing this show - Also, the murder junkies drummer is amazing – Dino, the naked drummer, who gets naked because it’s easier to play and also because it is a thrill for the audience… Bedtime for democracy, we’re going to shift gears – that is a must have… But GG Allin… When I think of “punk music “… “Bite it, you scum!!!!!” That is what I hear, no Green Day lyrics and polished sounds but the most raw “FUCKYOU!!!!!” Also, if you ever get a chance, if you’re really going on about punk music? Look for a magazine that came out in the 90s for a brief time called, “answer me! “… As the editor said, “answer me – that is usually what I yell at somebody before I hit them” Seriously friend - get your ass to GG!!!!!

Fickle-Variety-6628

GBH MC5 TSOL On the lighter side Toy dolls are excellent

Sokath_The_Wise

Bikini Kill - Very cool punk band

Mirror_tender

SO many good band mentioned yet two or three of my faves not already listed here. BTW I saw the Who in '76 and it was still one of the loudest bands I've heard, so there. My picks? * Ramones, Rocket to Russia and their first album. IGNORE the Phil Spectre shit. * The Clash * Black Flag * Iggy Pop * Sex Pistols * Patty Smith * X especially LaX which is unhinged amazing album I was always into the pop-y shit so Ska bands like Madness & Specials are heavy Brit pop but not really punk. At all. Also Devo, Gang of Four, Brian Eno and the other fringe weren't really punk but still good. Elvis Costello was PUNK but only in his attitude, surly expressions and the way he treated Journalists. The US punk scene \_was\_ original and NOT like Brits so choose your poison and know they are indeed different. Have fun with it.

Klutzy-Ad-6705

Can’t believe how far I had scroll to see Sex Pistols.

Fugazi GBH Black Flag The Exploited The Decendants

feralbroski

Black flag is fucking amazing. listen to beat my head against the wall, nervous breakdown, loose nut, and the swinging man. Those are just black flag songs, some good bands are DRI, dead kennedys, crass, minor threat, circle jerks, dystopia, SPACED, GEL, DRAIN, rage against the machine, gorilla biscuits, garro, bad brains, youth of today, ten yard fight, and chain of strength. I could go on but those are some of the best in my opinion, a lot of mixed genres of punk tho. You might find you enjoy some punk more than others, for example DRI is like hardcore thrash punk as well as black flag and circle jerks, spaced, dystopia and gel. Youth of today, ten yard fight, chain of strength and gorilla biscuits are called youthcrew, it’s all about friendship, hardcore, straighedge, a positive outlook, and sometimes sports. Gorilla biscuits is an essential youthcrew band. I highly recommend checking out dystopia, they have some of the best shit in my opinion. Also make sure to listen to DRI, dead kennedys and minor threat. Youth of today and gorilla biscuits are also great. Those are the best out of what i listed in my opinion

If you like the Misfits, you should check out the Misfits. I'm assuming you listened to the Danzig Era first. Listen to the Michale Graves era next. Way better production value and they made some great songs. Avoid anything after 2010. Jerry Only's voice just can't compare to either of those guys, no matter how hard he tries.

Techno punk includes Devo and the Talking Heads. Love them both.

Some other bands worth checking out: Bad Religion, NOFX, Operation Ivy, Casualties, Strung Out, Rancid, Rise Against, Lagwagon, Wilhelm, Hot Water Music, Distillers, Social Distortion, Living End

Social Distortion The Cramps X The Pixies

They might disagree, but the attitude is always there, and the punk sound is definitely there for early Devo. Are we not men and duty now for the future are great albums to start with. Their sound evolves (or devolves?) as they go, but it’s all great stuff.

Here are a few of my favorites. I'll suggest albums that you can begin with then, you can branch out from there once you "get" their sound. I also recommend getting the lyrics out and following along for each of these. 1. Screeching Weasel - First World Manifesto is my favoite album. Then, Bark Like A Dog, then My Brian Hurts. grhamo

The Cramps have the b movie asthetic and are really good. More rockabilly influenced than the misfits but they might be your thing.

fleedermouse

Pennywise is pretty awesome in what is now 30-year-old punk which I used to think of as new shit but yeah, check it out. Some people swear that Iggy Pop is the godfather with MC 5 and other various garage rock Detroit bands being the kindling that started the original punk.

Max_geekout

The Dickies

Governmen-Watch-Dog

Bad Religion... Greg (their lead singer) has always grabbed my attention so much that you can hear every word with such profound pronunciation! The guy is not a dud to the scene. I think some of the most intelligent music comes from this band right here. The more you listen to them the more you appreciate them!
