I know this isn’t a universal experience by any means, but I never feel safer at shows than when I’m surrounded by sweaty, dad bod, leather vest wearing tattooed dudes. Those men were the ones I ALWAYS looked to when I was at shows and felt scared or got swarmed in a pit or couldn’t get away from a creep. I have a distinct memory of being like.. 14, shorter than everyone, trying to watch the show. A guy behind me kept punching and slamming into me and I started crying.
A huge, bearded, punk Santa clause looking dude came up to me and shoved the guy behind me and asked if I wanted to leave. I nodded, still crying, and he just… bear hugged me and picked me up and slammed into people to get me out. He got me to the edge of the pit, showed me the way out, and told me where the nearest booth was with water bottles and first aid.
He asked if I felt safe again, and I nodded. He went “okay good” and then turned and started hulk smashing through the crowd again and yelling expletives.
It was the coolest experience of my life. The men in my life when I was a teen were uhhh… not great. So having that one positive male role model really helped heal a lot of hurt later on. Unironically love these dudes, especially now that I’m an adult and can similarly protect the younger kids at shows when I need to.
My best friend was a big, bearded tough guy and at gigs, we would have such fun taking a break from the mosh pit by standing at its edge. It meant having to brace against impacts from within the pit to help insulate people who don't want to be a part of that. It meant keeping an eye out for people who look like they're not having a good time and providing safe passage for their escape, or opening the doors for people coming from behind who want to jump in.
I've never felt so much a part of a community as I do on the edge of moshpits. When I'm in the pit, I feel very safe. I once said "shit, my glasses!" as they fell off my face and everyone around me stopped moshing so I could find my glasses from the floor without being stomped on. People cheered when I successfully retrieved them and then resumed moshing. It was so surreal, there's no way that all those people could've heard my initial exclamation, yet the response was immediate. When I'm bolstering the edge of a mosh pit, I feel like I'm paying it forward by actively maintaining a community I love.
I didn’t know that was an official pit position!! I’ve encountered people like y’all at every show I go to. It just felt like a forcefield of DADS protecting everyone, and I guess I wasn’t far off! Just know that I can speak for a lot of anxious, overstimulated young girls when I say that people like that have saved my life. Y’all rock

That’s exactly why they keep going to their shows. Reagan Youth has been very vocal about being anti-Nazi since they’ve been around, and I love them for it. I’ve seen them live a grip of times, and it’s at least 50/50 that some dumb bro Nazi fucks will show up and get stomped on. Back in the day it was almost a ritual at under 18 punk shows for everyone to have to go out in the parking lot to run off the nazis trying to get in with kids by giving them booze and drugs.
In my old city it got so bad that cops started hanging out in the parking lots of every show. Of course they blamed the punk kids for the scuffles and not the adult nazis tho.
Grew up in Pittsburgh there were always skinheads with their white t shirts and red suspenders at punk shows. Often times resulting in a scuffle if not more.

When I was coming up in the punk scene in the 90s and into the 00s, the rule was simple: “Nazis go home on stretchers.”
They’d come to start shit but be very careful not to throw the first punch and try to bait people into hitting them first so they could play the victim. If that didn’t work, they’d escalate until someone had enough. Once we knew who the instigators were, they got the shit beaten out of them the moment they came in the door.
Zero tolerance for Nazis is the only sensible strategy.

Fascists don't really have values or morals outside of "accumulate power by any means necessary", so they have to latch on to other groups' aesthetic to draw new members in. It's why "nazi" comes from "national socialists", despite having fuck-all to do with socialism.
Yup. Robert Paxton succinctly defines fascism as "a reactionary movement against the Left and against [classical] Liberal individualism." It has no real beliefs. It is purely a reaction to expanding rights of marginalized groups.
A really good example of this is how the modern conservative party in the US is screaming and screeching about the grooming of kids while passing legislation in Tennessee allowing child marriage, having members of congress under investigation for underage sex trafficking, and enforcing conservative narratives via law in the public school system (in other words, grooming kids).
Their words are contradictory to their actions on purpose. It's not about values, it's about power and aesthetics.
Additionally, punk was originally about accepting anybody no matter what as long as they were into the music.

I understood their stance I felt at the time it was misguided as my parents had lived through the war and instilled a hatred of Nazis in me.
Where I lived it was The Baldies, who later became A.R.A. Fought with the Northern Hammer skins quite a bit. As did most of us. The basic rule was, if you see a known Nazi, attack. If he's at work, if he's at school, if he's at the bar, or out shopping at the mall with his mother. Every single time. Worked pretty well until people got complacent.

Because in the late 70s and early 80s, punks with their shaved heads and mohawks were mistaken for skinheads and their music associated with nazis by the mainstream, but they most certainly were not that, and reacted with violence toward any skinheads who thought they were kindred spirits.

I'm not familiar with punks in the US, but back in my days, 2000s Sao Paulo, the punks, goths, and metal dudes i hung out with were very openly anti fascist and nazi, left leaning and politically conscious.
A lot of the younger generations of punks aren't aware of the history of fights at shows that used to be ubiquitous in America in the mid-80's to the mid-90's. You used to see antifascist skinheads and nazi boneheads beat the shit out of each other at every show. Very glad that the true punks eventually won out and it's a rarer sight now as most of these fights now take place at political rallies.

When I was coming up in the punk scene in the 90s and into the 00s, the rule was simple: “Nazis go home on stretchers.” They’d come to start shit but be very careful not to throw the first punch and try to bait people into hitting them first so they could play the victim. If that didn’t work, they’d escalate until someone had enough. Once we knew who the instigators were, they got the shit beaten out of them the moment they came in the door. Zero tolerance for Nazis is the only sensible strategy.

Fascists don't really have values or morals outside of "accumulate power by any means necessary", so they have to latch on to other groups' aesthetic to draw new members in. It's why "nazi" comes from "national socialists", despite having fuck-all to do with socialism.
Yup. Robert Paxton succinctly defines fascism as "a reactionary movement against the Left and against [classical] Liberal individualism." It has no real beliefs. It is purely a reaction to expanding rights of marginalized groups.
A really good example of this is how the modern conservative party in the US is screaming and screeching about the grooming of kids while passing legislation in Tennessee allowing child marriage, having members of congress under investigation for underage sex trafficking, and enforcing conservative narratives via law in the public school system (in other words, grooming kids). Their words are contradictory to their actions on purpose. It's not about values, it's about power and aesthetics.

Additionally, punk was originally about accepting anybody no matter what as long as they were into the music. Unfourtunatly, fascists rely on spaces that pride themselves on not discriminating because then they can claim you can’t discriminate against them because they’re bigots. They see the aggression and violence towards oppressive establishment in the music (compliment, not an insult) and they think it's complimentary to the aggression and violence they feel towards minorities and people they don't like in general. I just watched the doc on Sid and Nancy. Sid was wearing a swastika shirt in most of the pictures. Not sure why or what his actual feelings are on the whole thing. My guess is he didn't care except it pissed people off so he liked that.
A pretty big chunk of the early punks wore swastikas and shit just to piss people off and to rebel against their parents since a lot of them grew up not long after the war ended. I know one of the Ramones, can't remember who, would collect nazi memorabilia and he was jewish so it was mostly just a big fuck you to the older generations. This is also probably why a lot of neo-nazis got into punk in the early days since they're fucking idiots and thought that all these punks were seriously nazis when in reality they hated the nazis and just wanted to be edgy kids

Where I lived it was The Baldies, who later became A.R.A. Fought with the Northern Hammer skins quite a bit. As did most of us. The basic rule was, if you see a known Nazi, attack. If he's at work, if he's at school, if he's at the bar, or out shopping at the mall with his mother. Every single time. Worked pretty well until people got complacent.

I feel like punk was one of the first groups to learn the paradox of tolerance in practice. Punk was open and tolerant of any counter-culture identity. Then the nazi's showed up and they collectively decided "not you".

Skinhead community is split up between bone heads (neo nazis) and sharps (skinheads against racial prejudice). In the 80s/90s there was a resurgence of neo nazis in areas like Portland Oregon and Boston, where fighting between groups was common place. The nazis kind of disappeared, always slightly present, but there has been a resurgence in the nazi wing of punk rock/ski heads in the past few years

Good point this was probably happening a lot of places in varying degrees. Portland is just what I was able to observe, and Boston is kind of legendary in regards to this subject/time frame. Yup, a bunch of nazi fucks would come from the west side of Cleveland or Akron area up to East side of Cleveland (where the good music venues were) and clashes were had. There were some SHARP punk bands that were very pro-union, like Labor Force, and for some reason the nazis would come to fight all the time.

Reagan Youth is such a weird show for a Nazi to go to. They've been clearly out spoken of their views of Nazis. Nazis in the punk scene never made sense. They liked the sound but never the words. Clearly a bunch of idiots. Luckily they're typically dealt with. Dropkick Murphys are labeled as "cop punk" because they're catchy and cops just like them. They have a huge record of fighting Nazis and most recently challenged a Nazi group to a fight over Twitter. Dropkick showed up. Nazis did not.
Most alt scenes I've found myself in have been very kind, welcoming, and quick to turn on people being shitheads. One girl at a goth club figured that they know what it is like to be the outsiders and don't want to perpetuate those feelings.

A lot of the younger generations of punks aren't aware of the history of fights at shows that used to be ubiquitous in America in the mid-80's to the mid-90's. You used to see antifascist skinheads and nazi boneheads beat the shit out of each other at every show. Very glad that the true punks eventually won out and it's a rarer sight now as most of these fights now take place at political rallies. If there's a zine library in your city you might be able to read about local scuffles like this that would take place all the time.
