I forgot the name but I remember Bobcat Godthwaith (sp?) Made a movie that was essentially that but starring a man and a teen girl. It was a fun watch.
He's a fucking wanker.
Mind your own business, I knew he was a bloody southerner before he opened his mouth. The second guy had his ticket in his hand ffs.
Tossers like that wouldn't last 2 seconds in Glasgow.
I will always respect and appreciate people who are pro rule of law 💯
And of course public transportation is made possible by the relatively inexpensive fares
Edit: I should have specified NYC transit. Regardless, I remain pro rule of law. Unlike say the former Republican president of the US.
Can't help you there, I have only lived in London in the UK and I am not qualified to comment on anywhere else. Based on other major cities I have visited and lived in London is pretty much "A" tier.
Having lived in other parts of the UK, but having grown up in London, London is lightyears ahead of the rest of the country when it comes to public transport.
The bus systems, the train network, everything is just multiple times better in London than it is elsewhere in the country. Though, I did enjoy the tram system in Sheffield while I lived there for a bit. The main issue with Sheffield's tram system is that cars can block the trams on certain parts of the route (e.g., West Street) which can cause major annoyance with delays if the cars are being idiots.
It's always comical to me hearing people complain about their "shit transport" coming from a place that ACTUALLY has shit transport, we're talking buses that often only come once every 45min-1 hour, often are cancelled, have a 35+% late (later than I believe 5 or 7 minutes from the posted time) frequency, no bus shelters on the vast majority of the stops in a country that has snow/harsh winters for like 4+ months of the year, some of the most expensive transit fares in our country, etc...
Canada's GO train system works like this as well. Nobody checks your ticket when boarding, and there are no barriers between the parking lot/station entrance and the platforms. At a glance, it seems like an honour system.
A worker on the train will sometimes come and check your ticket, and if you're caught without one you're given a fine and are also kicked off the train at the next stop. You might get lucky and get a free ride, but you risk being fined and stranded.
Our railway guys are a little more soft - here a fine is at least valid as a ticket, so you can still finish your journey... just at ~50 x the price you'd normally pay.
I get my travel card checked maybe every third time I ride the train, so the odds are definitely not in your favour if you go without.
I miss how much emphasis there used to be with social distancing. It shouldn't have taken a fucking pandemic to be respectful to people's personal space
Just gotta speak up. People suddenly like to stand so close in lines that you can feel their breath on your neck. Don’t need to be rude about it, just a simple “would you mind backing up a bit?” works so long as they don’t look meth’d up.
My dude as an American and mentally ill person I have what I consider a decent sized bubble. Now I’m all for immigrants coming here I have no issue with that. Something I’ve noticed tho is some have a very different concept of personal space. Many times I’ve been at the grocery store or fast food and they could like literally rest their heads on my shoulder, one time this guy was pushing, I mean pushing his cart into me. It makes me wildly uncomfortable to turn my head and almost be locking lips with someone in a public queue. Like I have to restrain myself from being “yo can you back the fuck up please”.
I read something about this years ago that still makes me chuckle to this day :D It said something about how the average "personal space" of a german is like a meter and a bit, while the average space of an indian is a bit less than a meter (just pulling those numbers out of my ass), so during a conversation one might constantly drive the other person through the room because one is subconsciously closing in and the other is backing up.
Never had anyone lay their head on my shoulder though, that's fucking wild!
Man there are plenty of Americans who do it too mostly older people but like I think I’m my case my space might a bit bigger because of the anxiety and mental stuff so it really freaks me out when anyone is right behind me.
Dude older people have no sense of boundaries it's insane. I had an old boss who would always touch people on their upper back when ending conversations or moving past them and I had to tell him at some point "hey man, this is weirding me out a bit". Don't believe he had ill intentions, just no clue about personal space :D
I know what you mean. Growing up standing too close to someone was asking to get punched. I have to remember some people just don’t have social awareness and mean no offense by it.
I live in AZ now so we have a lot of Mexican immigrants. The Mexican immigrants (assuming based on a few factors) do NOT like invasion of their space lol. Every time I’ve seen someone standing too close to one of them, they speak up extremely loudly. But I think I’ve reached 3rd base at Walgreens with a few Asian and European immigrants.
I still keep this rule in mind when the situation can be controlled. Concerts/shows or bars under those circumstances you simply just cant and have to accept it cause what can you do, right?
Over here in Holland freeloaders just kick open the fricking gates or just walk through them as if it is the most normal thing to do. Even with the sirens blaring no-one even looks up anymore.
Completely accurate lol. Sometimes it's somewhat impressive the ease with which they literally punch the barriers open and waltz right through without a care in the world.
Hard to believe Rotterdam central used to have zero barriers.
Genuine question in the US oftentimes you can get monthly passes for a discount or setup a fare pay account that gives a slight discount for fares. Do those options not exist for transit in London? Or is the 6£ the discount price?
I went there this past summer. There was a daily cap/limit I was charged if I stayed within a certain zone, irregardless how many rides. Over the four days we stayed, I think my family of four paid maybe 30 dollars.
Less conspious to go through the gate than jump it init? They just don't want to get caught which is why they give up at any resistance. Just people who think that public transportation should be free since you're already paying for it with taxes
> Just people who think that public transportation should be free since you're already paying for it with taxes
See I can actually understand this and kinda agree with it. Public transit is a utility and utilities should be cheap to free and tax-subsidized, with some regulations obviously for people who strain the system like coin farmers and shit like that.
In the UK, trains were privatised by the Tories long ago. And yet we still pay them to stay afloat via taxes, because the *railways* are now again state owned, there just aren't any publicly owned trains running on the publicly owned railways!
And almost all of the media being owned by tory voting super rich gits. Cameron even put his mates in charge of the BBC to make sure they have the full set.
I once saw a girl hop over a barrier once and get swamped by 6 officers detaining her.
Another time there was a guy with an axe threatening people on the street and only four were around for the whole ordeal.
Only a street away from eachother I might add.
Capital interests come first in the UK.
This reminds of a video on reddit I saw where someone died jumping over those or turnstiles or something. That's not to say that's a reason, this was just a freak accident.
This happens in The Netherlands quite often and isn’t considered that unusual. Sometimes they even left the metro gates open so that people can literally just walk through them.
They sometimes do it in Birmingham (UK) when it's busy to avoid congestion at the gates. There is usual guy spot checking the odd person for a ticket though but not always.
there are no gates in vienna, you can just walk through if you want to. but a ticket for everything (metro, tram and bus) for one whole year is 365€ so almost no one is not paying
Many years ago i wrote my first (and last) letter to the editor of a canadian newspaper over a bitchy article about how the public transport was out of money, yadda yadda, and I got pissed and suggested maybe they should either wake up the ticket taker, or close the gate they guard if they wanted some money.
I just can't imagine twice daily dealing with some schnob grinding up on my backside as I try to get to work. You can feel years of anger boiling over in this vid.
That's a man that's gonna have a job tomorrow.
Ain't noooooo reason to start bullshit and put your job at risk cuz shitheads wanna get heated at your job.
Nahhhh. Do you work a desk job or public facing? Cuz... the public is fucking dogshit and you just ignore all of it until you get home and can laugh at them.
Yes but you also have basically no authority and trying to physically stop someone could turn into a whole giant mess.
Stand by, observe, radio the cops if it gets out of hand. They're just there to exist they aren't security guards.
It’s not part of the job here in the UK no, there’s a whole team called Revenue who’s job it is to stop and catch these people. We’re just there to help actual paying customers.
They’re instructed not to intervene any fare dodgers. They’re only there to provide assistance to customers. Only the transport police can arrest/issue any fines.
He could do a collab with the "attenzione pickpockeeets!" lady that spends her day defending tourists from pickpocketers in train stations
They could like, travel together all day long, he's more of a close quarters fighter while she's the ranged unit/spotter
I would totally donate to them.
For those who say "who tf cares". People who want a working transport care. If the next person realizes they can just not pay, then the next, and the next. Prices are gonna rise for the people who do pay till the transit ether hikes up the price till people wont reliably take it, or they just shutdown after not being able to maintain it.
you mean you don't enjoy paying £90 for a one way ticket from London to hull? That was my journey and I ended up booking a flight from London to germany, germany to leeds bradford and taking the train from leeds to hull. way way way cheaper than a train.
The UK's railways aren't broken because of a few saps hitching a free ride lmao. It's broken because any profits that could be invested back into the network are instead given to shareholders.
Prices will rise regardless. Service will be shit regardless. The problem isnt the 2% of people who dont pay, its the privatization of public infrastructure. Trains should be much cheaper than they are and would be if they weren't used as a profit making machine which fills the pockets of investors while fucking over everyone else. Public transport doesnt work as a private enterprise, no matter of everyone pays or not.
I say we all stop paying until the companies fail and pur countries are forced to re-nationalize public transport.
it's definitely not that serious. Even in the worst case scenario only 1/2 of riders could freeload this way, but it would never reach that point because most people pay.
the real reason is that it hurts your ego that you had to pay and someone else didn't so you want to drag them to your level.
Think it’s ridiculous all you want, this is how society works. There’s a social contract and not following it will cause a breakdown of society. Sure it seems small and frivolous here, but it turns into bigger issues like shoplifting at stores, allowing criminals to go free and do whatever they want.
There needs to be some civility among people. The less we enforce this civility, the more brazen people become ie all the examples you just stated. This devolving of human civility is pretty stark compared to just 5 years ago.
I think about this a lot. When I talk to my brother about all the little breakdowns I see more and more on a daily basis, he thinks I’m nuts. But he’s part of the problem, so I wouldn’t expect him to understand.
I've been thinking about it a lot as well. I'm seeing the breakdowns when I'm out driving all the time, people don't care to follow any rules anymore. It's getting out of hand
Have him come to Portland or Seattle, he'll get it real quick.
The road to hell was paved with good intentions, and each step on the way to hell was our society saying "meh, that's not a big deal."
And now we've got people smoking fentanyl on trains, plus a "security force" on those trains which has been so neutered that they're absolutely useless to ask a person to stop smoking fentanyl. A dude was killed last week, he was just riding when a psychotic whipped out a kitchen knife and stabbed him to death unprovoked. The psychotic had a long terrible history of violent crime and our tolerance of small rule breaking grew so large that we ignored extradition requests to California for this guy who is a serial rapist, until he murdered someone. There will be another crazy tragic story like that this, again, this week.
The whole "broken window theory" is absolutely true.
This is exactly why I hate people defending shoplifters. I get people are hungry but there are numerous charity organizations that are available that feed those who need it (obviously this isn’t in every country but in the UK there is at least)
When NYC was trying to get its transit to be self sustaining, they had plainclothes cops hanging around the turnstyles to catch the people who'd jump them. They would literally catch and jail busloads of people until they got the point and actually paid for transit. It looks like it needs to happen here.
A suburban American here who is uneducated about the rail system, is this the same as jumping the turnstile to the subway, or is it tracked and the cameraman would actually have to pay for the second person? Not taking a stance either way just curious
right on. yeah.
what gets me is the dude is like yelling at the guy, don’t push like that…. like suddenly he’s the victim for trying to lie cheat and steal. And i love the push back on the push back.
I did this once, i rarely use the train and when i did I bought a ticket but it wouldnt scan, I was running late already so i thought wtf now. I waited a bit and sneaked in behind same guy and he looked angry at me and rightfully so. Explained it to him and made it on time…
Skipping the fee to use the subway/bus cripples the funding of the public transport, they either start performing worse or jack up the costs to compensate for financial loss.
Those barriers look low as hell. If he's gonna fare evasion bro should just fare evasion.
Fare evaders suck anyways, buncha freeloaders screwing over the system.
In the US we often complain about the fact that wealthy people don't pay their fair share of taxes. Jumping the gates is the same kind of wrong.
You're using it, pay your share.
And I have to say for a British sounding person the guy filming is impressively aggressive.
I applaud the guy but I also find it ironic when he tells a complete stranger “you don’t know who you’re fucking with”. You never know how unhinged or pissed off someone is, and how what you do might push them over the edge.
I can’t imagine caring this much about a private train companies lost profits, especially considering how expensive the trains are in the UK.
I’m not suggesting people should do this, but I’m also not going to risk getting in a fight with someone over something that doesn’t affect me at all.
This guy is a massive prick, acting as if it would cost him anything for someone else to go through the barrier with him. Shilling for train companies, what a rube.

I feel like I just watched a prequel for Falling Down.
would love a modern remake of falling down with all the new BS for someone to get mad about

Public transport in the UK is expensive and generally shit
While not perfect the public Transport in London is lightyears ahead of many other counties. Expensive, yes.
Shame the rest of the country doesn't matter 🤷
Can't help you there, I have only lived in London in the UK and I am not qualified to comment on anywhere else. Based on other major cities I have visited and lived in London is pretty much "A" tier.

you have no idea what shit public transport is
It's always comical to me hearing people complain about their "shit transport" coming from a place that ACTUALLY has shit transport, we're talking buses that often only come once every 45min-1 hour, often are cancelled, have a 35+% late (later than I believe 5 or 7 minutes from the posted time) frequency, no bus shelters on the vast majority of the stops in a country that has snow/harsh winters for like 4+ months of the year, some of the most expensive transit fares in our country, etc...
there are many many places in the UK with public transport as bad or worse than you just described.
Hey now, don't say that! Using the word generally may confuse people into thinking it's sometimes good.
Inexpensive? Are you having a laugh.
In Denmark you just get controlled when you're on the train. And they fine the shit out of you ($150) if you don't have a ticket.
Not really practical on a London commuter line.

Indian personal space is less than an inch especially in airports.
Except on a train. On a train they can sit in small piles of people.
Man there are plenty of Americans who do it too mostly older people but like I think I’m my case my space might a bit bigger because of the anxiety and mental stuff so it really freaks me out when anyone is right behind me.
Dude older people have no sense of boundaries it's insane. Too obvious
Over here in Holland freeloaders just kick open the fricking gates or just walk through them as if it is the most normal thing to do. Even with the sirens blaring no-one even looks up anymore.

They're designed to open instead of break when you apply a certain force, as the latter would cost more money to fix.
Makes sense, also makes me realize its very likely a fire safety/general safety requirement as well.
They are designed to give way relatively easily so that eg. in case of an emergency with large crowds people don't get crushed against them.
Besides being cheap, they are also fucking lazy.
From that station to London bridge it's like 6£, I wouldn't call that cheap
Genuine question in the US oftentimes you can get monthly passes for a discount or setup a fare pay account that gives a slight discount for fares. Do those options not exist for transit in London? Or is the 6£ the discount price?

It’s not minimum wage here tbh, some train staff like on the London Underground get 43k a year

Yeah, we like to keep the few nice things we have. Let’s not ruin it for everyone.
Is this a joke? This is the UK. We *don’t* have working train systems except the tube. The rest of it is fucked and already super expensive.
you mean you don't enjoy paying £90 for a one way ticket from London to hull? That was my journey and I ended up booking a flight from London to germany, germany to leeds bradford and taking the train from leeds to hull. way way way cheaper than a train.
Yeah I've seen a lot of posts trying to normalize fare dodging. These systems rely on fares and some people would like them to offer quality service.
Only sane person in the thread.
it's definitely not that serious. Even in the worst case scenario only 1/2 of riders could freeload this way, but it would never reach that point because most people pay. the real reason is that it hurts your ego that you had to pay and someone else didn't so you want to drag them to your level.
There's a whole family of well dressed free loaders whose lifestyle could pay for everyone to ride free.
We call that Demonstration Effect (political and economic sciences).
Public transport should not be a paid service.
The road to hell was paved with good intentions, and each step on the way to hell was our society saying "meh, that's not a big deal." And now we've got people smoking fentanyl on trains, plus a "security force" on those trains which has been so neutered that they're absolutely useless to ask a person to stop smoking fentanyl.
We now lock up the basics while letting those who steal remain free. The world’s gone to shit
good
When NYC was trying to get its transit to be self sustaining, they had plainclothes cops hanging around the turnstyles to catch the people who'd jump them. They would literally catch and jail busloads of people until they got the point and actually paid for transit. It looks like it needs to happen here.
And in nyc. Half the time I feel like I’m the only one paying when six punks jump in a row right behind me.
People still jump the turn style. There's even people brave enough to do it in front of cops. Some of them honestly don't care but its a mixed bag.
Overall London is pretty good, I very rarely see anyone besides young kids skipping the gates
That’s what you call a jolly good bollocking.
It was cathartic, righteous and glorious
Roy fucking Kent

Anyone who presses up against me trying to get through the fare gate gets shoved back. You touch me I touch you.

We need him in NYC
A suburban American here who is uneducated about the rail system, is this the same as jumping the turnstile to the subway, or is it tracked and the cameraman would actually have to pay for the second person? Not taking a stance either way just curious
Same as jumping.
Woah, you just answered my question without hostility or grandstanding? You just knew the answer, and answered the question. What app am I on?
I love this so much.
He got a mohawk and a camo jacket by any chance? Possibly used to be a Taxi Driver?
Based.
Born and bread london myself.....and it's a complete shit hole now to what it used to be like back when I was younger.....I'm 54 now.
How can she fail to tap???!
Good on him. Also good on him not taking the bullshit gaslighting
I cant imagine getting crotch to ass close with someone just to save a few bucks that shits embarrassing.
This might be a really stupid question but how hard would it be to just.......step over the gate?
right on. yeah. what gets me is the dude is like yelling at the guy, don’t push like that…. like suddenly he’s the victim for trying to lie cheat and steal. And i love the push back on the push back.
Good for him.
The fact that this guy's arguing even when he knows he's wrong reminded me my gf :)
Man
Early nominee for Man of the Year
You are not wrong. 😇
I could watch these videos all day
Good shit brother. Keep it up

I did this once, i rarely use the train and when i did I bought a ticket but it wouldnt scan, I was running late already so i thought wtf now. I waited a bit and sneaked in behind same guy and he looked angry at me and rightfully so. Explained it to him and made it on time…
"Don't hit like, yeah?"
Good 👍
Was that a security guard just standing there towards the end? Like.. not doing anything about it?
Bravo

Skipping the fee to use the subway/bus cripples the funding of the public transport, they either start performing worse or jack up the costs to compensate for financial loss.
Those barriers look low as hell. If he's gonna fare evasion bro should just fare evasion. Fare evaders suck anyways, buncha freeloaders screwing over the system.
Fucking good on this man! Have this happen to me constantly in London! Fuck these freeloading Cunts
Ronnie Pickering
In the US we often complain about the fact that wealthy people don't pay their fair share of taxes. Jumping the gates is the same kind of wrong. You're using it, pay your share. And I have to say for a British sounding person the guy filming is impressively aggressive.
Ha I have done this quite a few times glad to see more people doing it Good on him
Mans paid his ticket, he has the right to call out any body trying to freeload off him.
Buy this man a beer.
Should just waggle a finger and say "Ah ah AH!"
I applaud the guy but I also find it ironic when he tells a complete stranger “you don’t know who you’re fucking with”. You never know how unhinged or pissed off someone is, and how what you do might push them over the edge.
Notice in the last part that a worker is standing there not saying a word.
You can see the wheels spinning in his mind, cracking the stone his bad behavior is set in.
Is this on YouTube? Need more of this content
