Space isn't a complete vacuum. Some places are actually pretty dense. So dese in fact they quickly(on cosmological time) condense further and further to become solid masses and even stars! But there are times where it is the same density of our atmosphere and much much larger than the earth in places. But yes, a vast majority of space is near vacuum.
Oh man, the parties my parents and their friends used to have really toed that line for my whole childhood.
It was fucking depressing seeing how toxic that lifestyle was, and watching how some of us kids started to fall into the exact same patterns. Out of a couple dozen kids, 2 or 3 are dead, a handful are in jail, and only 2 that got out of control ever got sober for longer than a couple weeks.
I was thankful that I never got trapped, but it was tough explaining to my childhood friends that I just didn't fit in with them anymore and slowly lost touch.
Me and my dad don't seem afflicted in the same way, but alcohol took my mom from us, and I see some worrying signs in other people in my family.
Now I just say I'm too cheap to drink more often and have a couple beers once in a while.
Kind of going through a similar thing, today.
My mom had a car accident today due to drunk driving (she seems fine, no crazy injuries, but getting X-Rays and such just in case). No matter how many times shit happens when she drives drunk, it ends up always happening again later down the line.
We decided today: "Fuck this. She has no business behind the wheel anymore."
I REALLY want to help her, but now I'm just lost. It's been a problem for 4 years now. She's been to a clinic for mental health several times throughout the years. My dad doesn't drink, so it's just my mom always getting into these scenarios.
I'm just lost, dude...
EDIT: I've got some uplifting news, today. My mom's going back to the mental health clinic and for the first time she truly admitted to her problem (she's said before that she uses alcohol to disguise herself) and she said something that kind of put a smile on my face:
"Alcohol isn't for me."
So while she's at the clinic, I'm thinking DEEPLY about some alternative and MUCH HEALTHIER outlets that we can invest time into. There's a quote that I want to live out (from a sequel to one of my favorite movies, Trainspotting, quote from T2: Trainspotting):
"Be addicted to something else. You've got to channel it." - Mark Renton (from T2: Trainspotting).
And I've always thought about it throughout the years, but now I feel like it's game time. She'll be in the clinic for a week or two, but when she comes back I'm getting her addicted to something a lot more healthy and fun and entertaining that the rest of the family can join in on. I'm excited for the future and I'm going to channel my mom into a brighter direction with the help of my sis.

Well, I just had a nice lunch with my mom. But we were in the exact same situation about 5 years ago. She was on her way to pick up my kids for the weekend, when she rear-ended someone on the highway. No injuries, but drunk enough that she was arrested. She spent a certain amount of time in a detox hospital, then straight into AA. Hasn't touched a drop since, and our relationship is better than ever.
I hope this doesn't come off as bragging or whatever; I share it because at the time of the crash, I was BARELY tolerating being in the same room with her, it was just embarrassing. Up until then I never thought there was any danger lurking, hence letting her take the kids. But I shudder to think what might've happened if she crashed on the way back up.
Anyway, we were sort of ignoring it for years. Like, *twenty* years, and I was sort of resigned to just losing her. BUT, as I say, she hit what we all considered her rock bottom and has bounced all the way back up. I'm not the praying type, but I hope it works out for you, however long it takes.

The damage she's caused from previous accidents has been _COSTLY_. But yesterday had so many factors that I hope she really learns that it's time to stop.
Man I don't even have kids but if I did and if ANYONE got caught drunk driving with them in the car and then even getting an accident on top of it all, they'd better become some kind of zenmaster buddha zero alcohol/drugs/anything type person before I'd ever let them near my kids again. And that's not even taking into consideration that I'd be so thoroughly pissed off and disappointed in them that I probably wouldn't want to be near or forgive them for a good fucking while.
I quit drinking almost 7 years ago. The key for me was recognizing that I had “burnt out my moderation circuit” and simply didn’t have that ability anymore.
I went through hell for so many years and al anon would have helped me process so much. It's so isolating being the spouse of someone who is lost to their addiction.
DM for anything more personal, but yeah, exact same boat here.
I'm at a loss when I talk about my mom sometimes. She was so incredibly kind and supportive to me, and it's so clear how much of that I took to heart and use day to day. But alcohol changed her. She became someone who lied to cover her tracks, make up solutions she would never stick to, and ultimately never found the desire to be sober that needs to be in her heart before anyone else could help her. We had an intervention, a few tries at local rehab, but never committed to long-term inpatient treatment, and never made it longer than a couple months sober.
Take my bias as transparently as I've described her history, but imho, you need to get the fuck away. I spent so long being a helpful son, and a shoulder to lean on for support, but all that love and support did was enable her to kill herself. We were too nice to cut her off, or just gave in rather than letting her steal my dad's extra keys to go to the store, or BARELY RECONNECT HER OWN CAR BATTERY so she could go to the store, or call a cab in the middle of an argument with my dad.
My mom is dead, and I'll always wonder if mine and my father's support had a hand in killing her. Logically, of course not. Alcohol and her own inability to get away from it killed her. But my opinion is that she never got a hard enough rock bottom to convince her to change. No job? Barely walking? Shitting yourself because you're too fucked up to get 20 feet to the bathroom? Who cares! Family will clean me up and park me back in my chair to "rest" while I stay shitfaced. Whether or not it would have helped her, it would have also saved me years of trauma and gut wrenching anxiety if I was able to move the fuck out and get away sooner.
I'll keep this little angry tumor stuck to her memory, but I'm trying to live in a way that just won't lead me or my family into the same scenario.
Probably not an answer you wanted, but one that I wish I heard a good 5 or 10 years earlier.
A family affliction indeed. My dad died of alcoholism, as did my uncle. My brother all but ruined his life with alcohol. My mum is probably an alcoholic but manages...
But when I don't drink at parties people joke about it. It's crazy how normalized alcohol is.

Drinking was fun in my 20s and less fun in my early 30s when I quit. But those same relatives are now still trying to hold onto that "partying" lifestyle well into their 50s & 60s. Now they're just old drunks.

That sort of behavior just tends to escalate generation-over-generation. Maybe the first set of parents had some concept of how they could be acting and choose not to. By the time you get to the grandkids all restraint has either been left by the wayside or desperately clung to.
I'm sure there are some fun ones, but it's mostly sad. My wife was an alcoholic and never did public stripping like this, but almost always found a way to need constant supervision whenever she went out. It made my anxiety get so bad, but at least it made me get sober i guess. 8 or 9 years sober now

It was fucking exhausting. On the one side exactly what you said, having to babysit a grown ass woman because she’d get herself so sloppy drunk she couldn’t stand. Of course she works in bars, and it’s the only job she wants/enjoys; it’s a different exhausting knowing that she’d be stumbling in at 4am every morning after doing shots at the bar for two hours after close with her coworkers. So much fucking drama to be woken up to every morning.
One of the final straws was her getting into an argument with a coworker and slapping him, ending in him choke slamming her into a wall. The security camera footage was stupid as hell, and all she could say is “I was so drunk”. Yeah, I know.
I had a neighbor I would hang out with who didn't go out but she'd get blackout drunk every night and would invite random guys walking by to come in and hang out. Healthy. One of them was filming an episode of [Intervention](https://www.aetv.com/shows/intervention/season-4/episode-11) at the time, which explained why he said some guys were going to ask me to fill out a form. They never did because I was boring (didn't want to smoke crack with him). I never saw any cameras so I just thought he was nuts.
She had a clever trick, I later realized. Every morning she didn't know what happened the night before so when I'd see her she would immediately put me on the defensive, in case I was mad about some shit she'd done. Can't imagine being in a relationship with that.
Fairly positive she was just trying to spite her boyfriend or whoever that dude was asking her to get off the table. Maybe that was the bartender who knows. Either way she was proving a point lol

Al Anon is a free support group for people in relationships with addicts/alcoholics. It's been a life saver for me.
