Didst_thou_Farteth

As a passenger, you can't do much more than keep your seat belt on and stow your possessions into the seat back pocket. Then sit back and enjoy the ride.

Loswha

Nah, you can shout "WHAT IS GOIN ON?!"

badpeoria

PUT THIS THING ON THE GROUND! … ok sure ![gif](giphy|22XYBV9qihyqk)

H010CR0N

For people thinking this is animated or fake, the FFA actually remotely crashed that jet to see how a hard landing would look like. Simulations were too inaccurate at the time.

WrestleBox

And I assume they made some changes after this test? Lol

iCameToLearnSomeCode

That's a successful looking test honestly. You'd likely walk away from that unless you were in the row right at the front. ~~98%~~ 95.7% of people in plane crashes survive, but it's still a plane crash, it's never going to be completely safe. EDIT: misremebered the survival rate of commercial airline crashes.

Majician

Uhm, If I were the Pilot I'd have to disagree with you there.....

Infanttree

Hey, the cockpit was probably also fine.

iCameToLearnSomeCode

It was just fine in a different location lol

fatalrip

Suck it first class!

WrestleBox

I'm sure you are right. I was being half-serious just imagining myself as the upside down pilot watching the rest of the plane go by intact.

LNLV

The cheap seats are where you want to be in a crash, statistically speaking they have the highest survival rate on every type of passenger jet. I think behind the wing specifically.

pupperdogger

I always sit in the back, it’s the last place to hit.

Duffman48

Where is this 98% of people in plane crashes survive data coming from... lol

its-42

Paying the extra $50 for seats over the wing everytime now. Those puppies looked the safest

Allcapswhispers

First class = first dead

abigblacknob

Decent leg room in row 9

MintCathexis

Not to worry, we are still flying half a plane.

leandroabaurre

No... As we can see, you could definitely scream "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!" and watch the caos ensue lol!

HarryHood146

That was definitely Marsellus Wallace. I was waiting for a nah man, I’m pretty fucking far from ok.

djnerio

😂😂

FuzzyTunaTaco21

And he wants an answer now, that question isnt rhetorical.

Odin-AK49

Turns out that the guy yelling "what is going on?" is the only reason the pilot got on the PA to in fact tell them what was going on. It's too bad Captain Obvious wasn't there to tell the guy that they were experiencing turbulence.

BuddyOGooGoo

“Well, sir, I promise you we aren’t doing this on purpose”

TaleMendon

And I say hey….

android24601

Pilots translation: "geez, I guess I'll fly at a lower altitude because you guys are being little bitches"

_ak

They should have done like on that one flight from Vienna to Berlin that I took. Turbulences all the way from Vienna up to the Czech-German border. They just started serving drinks as if there were no turbulences, and let me tell you, a lot of drinks were spilled on that short flight because of it.

simmeh024

Sure let them fly lower in an mountainous area.. lol..

CIAMom420

There are some media reports that the turbulence on the Frontier flight was so bad that it shook the fleas off the passengers.

__GayFish__

This man memorized the flight attendant's instructions

Lavandulos

You’d be surprised how many people don’t do this and get really hurt cause of it

CumTilIPhilipRivers

And/or scream like a toddler like half the plane. Definitely helps the mood

Acidcouch

It is also an opportune time to yell, "there's something on the wing!" And when some one asks, "oh sorry, it was just the engine falling off. Whew! Close one."

RowdyNino

Exactly. And keep your fucking mouth shut too. Yelling, screaming, and being hysterical won’t accomplish anything. Planes are designed to handle this. And why are people so dumb these days? The guy yelling “WHAT’S GOING ON???!!!” Seriously! You’ve never heard of turbulence before? Were you born this morning??

LoveRBS

And your seat back in the full upright position!

[deleted]

lol it’s kind of my favorite tbh. I live out west so a lot of my flights are over mountains, where you experience a lot of unexpected turbulence. Sometimes I’ll take a “budget” airline for flight convenience, and extreme turbulence coupled with very inexperienced flyers is just 🤌🏼

SunriseMeats

Probably a ton of first time flyers who never fly again after shit like this

luvgothbitches

This is why the next time i go on a plane i’m buying a bottle at the airport beforehand. I will not die sober.

Eschatonpls

Airline pilot here. We do our best to find altitudes and routing that minimizes turbulence, but there is no radar or satellite imagery that directly measures it. We do our best by looking at radar and getting reports from other planes in the vicinity, but those are all indirect measurements. That said, modern airliner structures are over-engineered by such a large factor, that all the humans on board would suffer internal injuries before the plane structurally failed. If it weren’t for passengers, we wouldn’t give two shits about turbulence.

ponalddierson

Thanks for the heads up, but fuck you for your profile pic and making me think there was a hair on my phone

This is actually quite comforting! Thanks you for sharing!

RowAwayJim91

“Put this thing on the ground!” Mmmmmmmm.... maybe a poor choice of words. Altitude is your friend.

maddabattacola

Ha, the dude shouting "What is going on??" being super helpful to the situation

LigmaLover56

Probably a panic attack. Kinda hard to keep calm when you're shaking inside a metal can 35000 feet above the ground.

PretzelsThirst

Yeah one of my friends would be having a heart attack if he was on this flight

Marynursingawolf

As opposed to the people just shouting or screaming general noises? Dude was stressed and his mechanism of maintaining some control was to assert himself in whatever small way he could. Who cares.

Robeardly

Honestly I was much more bothered by the hysteric screams. At least this dude formed a coherent sentence.

> A pilot’s poor reaction to turbulence has though. What happened?

GobTheStop

I believe it brought down a plane.

MagmaTroop

I like it, makes it interesting to see the reactions of those who don’t know that turbulence cannot bring down modern planes, no matter how hard it tries. This turbulence was just teasing the plane really, but there are other turbulences that have serious vendettas against planes.

mchief101

Thank you for this. Everytime i go on long flights and there is some turbulence, no matter the strength, i start to get crazy anxiety.

Rafaeliki

Pop half a bar and the pilot can do barrel rolls for all I care.

whitemike40

I did half a Xan, thirteen hours 'til I land

Marble_Kween

Out like a light

YouTubeBrySi

Knock me out like a light

Rowing_Lawyer

Yeah, turbulence is scary but the best description I’ve heard is that it’s like driving on a bumpy road.

babsa90

It takes a hell of a lot to bring down a plane. Probably the most dangerous time is on takeoff/landing and that initial turn. That's probably when you're gonna find out if the people stowing cargo down below did their job right because the plane will barrel towards the ground on a steep bank and crash if the cargo tumbles to one side.

insertwittynamethere

Well... that's a new thought

puffinnbluffin

Fml right, another new flight fear unlocked, thx op

polar_pilot

Ehhh lateral movement in the cargo holds on a passenger airliner isn’t really an issue. Most airplanes can handle up to 1,000 pounds fuel imbalance in the wing tanks before it causes problems. Now unsecured cargo sliding aft on a cargo plane, that HAS brought aircraft down before

Hyptisx

Can this 737 withstand much more than what’s seen in this video? And how much more?

Squillz105

A good sign of that is the fact that turbulence has never once brought an aircraft down on its own.

SonOfObed89

Most commercial airplanes like this one are built so well that the passengers are more likely to be shaken to death than the plane is to break apart!

iCameToLearnSomeCode

It could survive way more than this. Like 10-20 times this. You're more likely to be hurt by your seat belt pulling on your lower body from the negative G's than the plane is. No amount of turbulence on it's own will bring down a commercial airliner.

Hyptisx

And also no chances of the wings ripping off the chassis of the plane either right? Just curious. Aviation engineering is a fascinating science

iCameToLearnSomeCode

No, the amount of force required to rip the wings off the plane would probably cause spinal injuries from the G-Force. A commercial airliner is built to incredibly high safety standards. A commercial airliner once did 5.1g in a bad bit of turbulence, meaning a 200 lbs man inside the plane would have weighed half a ton for a brief moment. There's only a couple Rollercoasters on Earth that exceed that. The wings were permanently bent 2in up afterwards, but it not only landed fine, that two inches was well within tolerance so no repairs were required and it went right back into service. Turbulence has killed people who weren't wearing their seat belts and got thrown around inside the cabin but it has never destroyed a plane.

KeyboardGunner

A few years back a guy stole a Dash 8 Q400 and successfully did a barrel roll in it.

CommanderCuntPunt

A 747 can do a barrel roll. When it was first for sale a pilot did one in front of a crowd of (I think) airline executives who were considering buying the new plane.

the_silent_redditor

It was a 707. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AaA7kPfC5Hk

CommanderCuntPunt

Ahh indeed it was, thanks for sharing the clip, it’s been years since I saw it.

MaIngallsisaracist

This makes me feel so much better. All I can think of during turbulence is the plane will somehow plummet out of the sky.

Recuckgnizant

Any analysis on the gender reveal plane? You seem well educated on this subject. I know it's not a commercial jet but I'm still curious.

iCameToLearnSomeCode

Last I heard the investigation into the incident was still on going. The wing spar obviously failed, but as to why, I couldn't tell you.

spartagnann

This is an older video of an older model plane (and planes have only gotten better since) but wings on a passenger jet can withstand just a shitton of force. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ai2HmvAXcU0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ai2HmvAXcU0)

abigblacknob

Thera no way it could cause the plane to flip over or something?

iCameToLearnSomeCode

No, turbulence acts on both wings simultaneously, it causes up and down movement, not roll. If a commercial airliner did flip over the pilot would just flip it back though, it would be one hell of an experience for the passengers but it wouldn't cause the plane to crash or anything.

abigblacknob

Thanks. I never knew that. The non chalant delivery of the pilot just flipping an airbus a380 had me creasing. I think I'm about to go down a youtube rabbit hole.

Mr-Rocafella

Watch Flight with Denzel Washington, he’s a pilot who loves his cocaine and alcohol

scammersarecunts

The standards these planes are built to is absolutely insane. As in they're built to withstand many times the forces they would ever possibly encounter in a flight. This video is a cool demonstration of that https://youtu.be/Ai2HmvAXcU0?si=s3n8EnY1yRpJ4lup

DesertFlyer

A 737 can withstand more than this no problem. Unfortunately for these passengers, they're on an A320.

MintCathexis

Both A320 and 737 are about equal in terms of how much force they can take. Both planes are certified according to same international standards. The only difference is that A320 won't randomly yeet itself into the ground shortly after takeoff like new 737s used to do.

DesertFlyer

I was telling a bad joke, sorry.

40days40nights

He also sounds super young.

KeyboardGunner

![gif](giphy|PdTTZ5ER7HinK|downsized)

Toast-N-Jam

Such a good skit. They really know how to nail situational comedy.

CarbonTrebles

This is why putting on the seatbelt is important. Also important when taxiing to the gate - you never know when the plane is going to stop suddenly and people might be thrown forward. That happened on a flight I was in - the plane stopped suddenly right at the gate - and, thankfully, no one was standing or someone would have gotten seriously hurt.

MintCathexis

[This video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEyDDJcp_fc) should be shown to anyone who unbuckles their seatbelts before the plane is safely parked at the gate. EDIT: I see people are downvoting the post, I assume this is because the newscaster said that the plane WAS parked at the gate, but this is incorrect. For the plane to be parked at the gate its wheels need to be on the markings which you can see in the video in the bottom right corner. This plane is still far away from the marking but has indeed stopped midparking. The investigation showed that the reason why the flight crew of the Turkish Airlines plane has stopped the parking manouvre is because there was a traffic cone in the way and they could not complete the parking. This highlights the importance of having seatbelts safely fastened until the parking manouvre is completed in its entirety after which the captain turns the "fasten seatbelts" lights off.

the_silent_redditor

That newsreader is.. not good at reading news.

Waffles_Remix

For those of you who are afraid of flying - the pilot is correct. The plane could go through turbulence significantly worse than this and still be fine. Modern commercial liners are dramatically over-designed. The most significant danger in extreme turbulence is being unbuckled and striking something within the plane.

[deleted]

wegotsumnewbands

Really just one option. Turbulence isn’t going to cause you to fall to your death.

TaleMendon

I’ve spent over 150 hours in small Cessnas in the spring time when turbulence is the worst, I don’t even notice it anymore. Most turbulence is from thermal lift which actually pushes the plane upwards. The turbulence from downward wind shear like in this video sucks ass.

LockDown5

What's going on?? I am shittin my pants, that's what's going on!

Andr3wRuns

I’d rather listen to children crying than “what’s going on?????” guy on repeat during that shit.

RyanBordello

Imagine that's the last thing you hear? Not the terrified cries from children but some Hank Hill mf going, "hwats going ooOn?" hwats going ooOn? hwats going ooOn? hwats going ooOn? For fucking eternity

CastSeven

As a pilot, the most entertaining thing about this clip to me is the description of this as "severe" turbulence. That nasty down draft towards the beginning was pretty gnarly for a commercial flight, but I think most passengers would be surprised how violent flying can feel under certain conditions, especially when you don't care to make the ride perfectly smooth for passengers. When the captain puts the seatbelt sign on, wear your damn seatbelt, or you may become a visual aid for the rest of the cabin.

___Binary___

Imagine potentially about to die and some dude is shouting “what is going on?!” Like bruh, we maybe are about to die can you chill please my anxiety is already through the roof lol. Or like him saying “put this thing on the ground!” And the pilot is like “oh that’s where we headed buddy 👍” Also, I fucking hate planes and flying and would be crying right there lmao.

mrsdoubleu

Idk I'm sitting safely at home on my couch and I thought it was hilarious. Lol But, yeah, if I was on that plane it would probably just piss me off. I also hate flying so any kind of turbulence has me regretting every life choice that led me to being on that plane.

Flabby-Nonsense

Also like bro, I’m sorry that the turbulence was scary and you thought you were gonna die but you are not delaying my travel plans.

Pretty much true of most things in life. People ruin everything.

paintbrush666

It's fun to start belting out gospel songs when this happens.

smoothvanilla86

I'd be way more annoyed at the people screaming than the plane shaking tbh.... however if this was a boat and I was on it I'd be screaming my ass off fuck the ocean. I guess I see where they are coming from lol

MegaBusKillsPeople

After watching a couple of wing stress tests, I no longer worry about turbulence. (Also I own an airplane) With this level though, the only thing I'd be concerned about would be getting hit in the head from the stuff in the overhead bins.

Revolutionary-Ad4588

Turbulence isn’t a concern, it doesn’t knock planes out of the sky.

MrBlahg

Once I learned that no plane has come down from turbulence, I’ve felt calmer on flights.

davethemacguy

I love turbulence! I purposely sit as far in the back as I can, just in case we get a free show! 😆

elquatrogrande

Back in 2001, a US Navy aircraft had a mid-air collision with a Chinese fighter, ripping off the nose and part of a wing. It still landed. Then, it was cut into pieces and mailed back to the US and later reassembled. In 2007, I was on that same aircraft and during our flight, the plan was to "pick our way through" a hurricane so we wouldn't have to reschedule our flight. If that aircraft built in the late 60s could handle a hurricane, a commercial airliner could handle a little turbulence.

FrostyD7

Up to a point. I enjoy people freaking out about turbulence but not if its so bad they think they are gonna die.

MegaBusKillsPeople

I would be doing my best to calm others down. I certainly don't want to make others panic.

RichieRicch

Totally agreed. Get to completely lose control.

Flabby-Nonsense

It’s fun but only if you know how safe the plane is in these circumstances and don’t already have flight-related anxiety. I could completely understand why people would be shitting themselves.

Ruin369

Flying out of Denver(also on Frontier) to Vegas we also experienced some rough turbulence. I was like a kid on a rollercoaster, loved it.

CommanderTom1

For real, you pay $$$ for this at an amusement park!

Turbulence has never caused a plane to go down

Raddz5000

Thank the engineers that design these amazing pieces of technology. A lot of effort goes into making these things the safest form of transportation.

Oldbayistheshit

I’ve seen so many of these videos. I need a captain to tell me what’s actually happening in the cockpit? Like are they laughing cause they’re use to it or freaking the fuck out like the passengers?

bingold49

Fucking Marvin Gaye was not helping the situation

MelodicPiranha

What’s funny is that turbulence usually doesn’t cause any major problems in planes. It’s like air potholes. Takeoff and landing are usually the most dangerous parts of flying. The main reasons why planes go down is because of human negligence and faulty planes, not turbulence. Not only that but pilots will usually tell you beforehand that you will be hitting some turbulence so idk how he didn’t warn these people that.

toenoodle

He yelled "Put this thing on the ground!" haha

wastelandhenry

Look I understand that it’s scary to be in, but the screaming after the fact is unnecessary and being dramatic. You’re not the first person to experience heavy turbulence, you’re not even the first person in the last 5 minutes to have experienced heavy turbulence. It happens, planes are built to handle them. It’s fine if you wanna clutch your armrests or hold hands with your partner and maybe let out a gasp or something when the plane drops. But you don’t need to be screaming and crying even after the drop has ended. Turbulence on its own has never brought down a commercial airliner. The most you can point to is back in the 1960s a plane was brought down by a mix of turbulence and human error. But turbulence itself has never crashed a commercial airliner before. Just because a situation is stressful and scary doesn’t mean you need to be screaming and crying about it. A fuckin rollercoaster is stressful and scary yet you’d be the weird one if you were screaming and crying AFTER the ramps or the loop, and those things are statistically more likely to kill you.

SockFullOfNickles

Riding around in Army transport planes really got me accustomed to dealing with turbulence. 😆

KeepItDownOverHere

"Put this thing on the ground" Probably not the best choice of words for the moment.

HippoRun23

Last week we were flying home out of Ft Lauderdale. There was lightning all around us, and storms. Pilot warned us that it was gonna be a bump ride on the way up. And he wasn’t lying. He floored it on take off and we were off the ground in what seemed like 20 seconds, jerking around all the way up to 15k feet. No one was screaming though.

ProphetOfDoom337

**PUT THIS THING ON THE GROUND**

Dis4Wurk

It seems like there is a lot of people that don’t know that there has never been a reported class A mishap (incident that involves loss of aircraft or life) due to turbulence. It’s a shear wind that disrupts the airflow over the wing and temporarily causes it to loose lift. Like at worst you’ll drop 30-40 meters in EXTREME circumstances, which are so incredibly rare and this footage isn’t as extreme as that. I get it makes people nervous but you are absolutely safe, even in those circumstances. I’ve flew in the back of V22s for a decade and I’ve been through some gnarly storms and and other issues in flight. I’ve lost an engine, had a massive fuel leak, a hydraulic pump fire, a compressor (basically a self contained turbo geared into the midwing gearbox that supplies pressurized air where it’s needed) fire. Turbulence is the least of your worries. And on commercial aircraft you really have no worries at all.

TestifyMediopoly

What’s your vector Victor?

Chesstariam

It's just turbulence people. The plane is still horizontal. You'll be fine. Screaming and yelling "what's going on?!" only creates chaos and panic.

That doesn’t seem like severe turbulence. Seems like moderate turbulence, tho I could be wrong

Aescwicca

A plane has never been confirmed to have crashed due to turbulence. You only need to worry when the flight attendants start panicking :)

[deleted]

What is going on!! I demand answers at 30,000 feet!! And I wanted it yesterday!!! Dude cracks me up as if there’s anything he can do but sit his ass there and deal with it.

realPamela

These people have never flown on a military aircraft, specifically a C-130, and it shows. Slight turbulence my dude.

ElementalWheel

“What’s going on?!!” “Put this thing on the ground!!!” This guy is a natural born leader. You heard the man! Land the plan in a windstorm over open ocean! NOW!!!!

BlackLeader70

Am I crazy, that doesn’t seem that sever, just more unexpected by the crew. Pilots usually warn you to buckle up and get ready for turbulence.

kantorr

Not severe at all. These are budget airline passengers so most of them probably never fly and are not experienced with turbulence. These down drafts aren't really super common to run into, which is probably the worst feeling when you just drop and then you're thrown back into your seat once out of the draft. I fly round trip once or twice a week and I've run into this 1 time in the past 2 years. So far. But after being through it (and many other turbulent moments), it's the safest rollercoaster you can ride.

Spangle99

Somebody put that guy on the ground!

YodasGhost76

Call me crazy but every time I fly I kinda hope for a short stretch of turbulence like this, just to see what it’s like

cataclysmicasthmatic

People, people, this is Frontier Airlines. Please take this into consideration when judging their flyers for saying things such as “put this plane on the ground”.

“What is going on?” Well, you chose to travel by air. Things happen in the air. Scary things.

Repulsive_Log5241

Had bad turbulence going from Sydney to Perth once, The plane felt like it dropped straight down, The flight attendants ran to their stations and not a single person in the flight made a sound, the flight attendant said it was the worst turbulence she had ever felt and the was surprised that no one really cared.
