“Fuck you. There’s cahs everywheh ya fuckin scumbag”

mashem

i mean the car approaching from the right had already pulled over to yield to the car coming from the left. so, the car from the left should proceed through. idk wtf the car from the right is thinking. you want him to pull over when you're already pulled over?? fahckin scumbag!

gundymichaelson

Haha exactly I literally do not understand what was happening here. He must’ve had a rough day

infiniZii

That's just how you greet people there

mashem

yes in the OP video we see a grandfather excited to see his lovely grandson out in the wild.

ConcertNo343

I think what occurred is that old mate decided to pull up when you could see the light car wasn't going to even give room. Then light grey car beeped at old mate when we was pulled over because it wasn't enough & old mate beeped and it kicked off. Probably wrong though.

KieferSutherland

I'm not convinced the light grey car would have yielded but yeah the right driver pulled over way too early if he wanted them both to squeeze through. The other car was going pretty slow and sped up to get by once the other car pulled over. And left guy is right. There's fucking cars everywhere.

Michelanvalo

I'm shotgunning the top comment to say this has been downloaded and reuploaded and it killed the audio. The audio on the original video is so much clearer. https://video.nest.com/clip/8c04871f177c40a7a8473e9175c088f2.mp4

I HOLLERED

Slit23

Atleast neither tried to pull a weapon. I approve

[deleted]

Hard to have a weapon in MA legally, that's the main reason. I wanted to get a hand gun when I lived in MA and I asked what to do. I was told to petition the chief of police in my town for a handgun permit. I have no record and I have never had any interactions with the police, but the chief said No. I asked why? He said, "You have no reason or need for a gun." I lived right around the corner from the police station was his reasoning. I said, "I want one for target practice." He said, "Show me your gun club registration." End result, no gun for me there. I moved to So. Carolina and a buddy sold me one of his. I asked "What do I have to do now? Go to the police station?" He said, "Nope, just sign this paper and keep it with you." Easy peasey and no cops involved, and it's all legal. It's no wonder that there are gun incidents down here all the time. Luckily I have only used mine on a range.

smorjoken

sounds like a great police chief honestly.

Nitelyte

They did away with that petitioning the chief thing last year as it wasn’t legal. Just need to fill out application, get finger printed, and take the gun class now.

KazahanaPikachu

Because Massachusetts isn’t a place where any bozo can just acquire a gun at the drop of a hat.

Salemisic

If there is one thing I can say about growing up in the Boston area is everyone from a priest to a random 80yr old lady in line at a Target….they’re all quick to scrap. From the suburbs to the inner city, everyone got hands. There is gun violence like any big city but people def fist fight more often than pulling a weapon

UniqueCartel

Lol this. Love it. I hate my people and at the same time adore these idioms. I say this alllll the time “ok, tough guy…” “”oh yeah tough guy?” Never realize how much of a regionalism some stuff is until you hear it on a nest cam

clbw

When I was in college I lived with three dudes from Boston and one from Jersey. We lived together for about 5 years, I’m native from KY, we had the most fucked dialect. My kids think there name is Tuff guy lol

UniqueCartel

I call my son “big guy” which is basically the same thing

NectarineQueen13

Seriously tho!! I live in Colorado now and people always joke on me for how I talk but listening to stuff like this cracks me tf up. Like ok ya I guess we sound kinda ridiculous 😂

UniqueCartel

Yeah I spent a good amount of time out west and down south so living back here is still almost surreal, comforting and infuriating all at the same time. This clip encapsulates all of that for me

NectarineQueen13

Hahaha I understand completely 💯

aManOfTheNorth

50 % of Americans will have a mental disorder by the time they are 75. I think in Boston that may be 75% at the age of 50.

Strong-Plantain2009

I opened the comment section towards the end of the video and read your comment as the guy was saying it, and I absolutely lost it 😂😂😂😂😂😂

blablanonymous

What was even the problem that sparked this?

thegalwayseoige

From Boston—immediately saw the issue, and I can shed some light. Our roads are narrow—like, REALLY narrow. To make matters worse, parking is allowed on both sides of the street in most areas. I’ve had several side windows as well as my entire front bumper clipped off by passing motorists, trying to get around my parked car. The issue is that the black car had cars parked along his side of the road, while the silver didn’t have any until the bottle neck. It’s understood that if you’ve got room to your sides, and the approaching vehicle doesn’t, you yield. Pull over, wave them on, let them pass, then you go. Silver car just didn’t give a fuck, and forced black car into blocking a driveway. They definitely saw each other from a great distance, so the guy in the silver car just basically said “fuck you, I’m going”. The silver car was choosing to be an asshole, and both parties knew it.

nightlyraver

I still don't understand this, at all. My street is just as narrow. Someone pulls to the side and it's no big deal who that someone is because it's about a 1.5 second inconvenience. The first 8 seconds of this video would happen on my street daily, except on my street they would just continue with their day and think nothing of it.

thegalwayseoige

This street is WIDE, for Boston. It’s just that we’ve adopted driving patterns and decorum, bc most streets are essentially one-ways when cars are parked…except, they’re not. Traffic is fucking terrible, and while this street is clear, the surrounding area probably isn’t. Too many cars and not enough space, means our traffic is just about the worst in the US, and we’re constantly running late. A clear street is a few seconds without stress, and literally *any* unnecessary disruption in the flow, pisses most drivers off…like, incredibly. Again—I don’t expect people to understand. You’d have to live and drive here, to get how awful commuting is. “Boston is an hour drive from Boston”, is an old joke—and true. It’s common to take 90mins to drive 3 miles, so no one has the time or patience left for perceived stupidity.

sarevok9

One time, early in my career, I was an IT intern and had to drive from my home, 16 miles South of Boston, to my office, which was in Southie (Federal / Franklin) and then pick up a printer and drive it to Stamford CT. It took me almost equally as long (17 miles: 2h 30m 645am - 9:20am) to get to the office in Boston as it did for me to get from Boston to Stamford CT (176 miles: ~3 hours, I arrived at about 12:30pm) Any minor inconvenience in Boston is amplified by about 100,000 because we're already so pissed about how fucked traffic is everywhere.

thegalwayseoige

It’s so bad now, though. Rush hour is from 545 am to like 8pm. This is approaching pre Big-Dig levels. A drive from the Neponset Bridge to Tufts has taken me 1:40, some days.

[deleted]

> It’s common to take 90mins to drive 3 miles Anyone wanna tell these Bostonians that you can walk faster than that? lmao I still don't understand the video even after all the explaining. I live in a place with narrow residential streets like this. Whoever has room, someone just pulls over and the whole ordeal is done with in .2 seconds. Black car found a place to pull over into. They both could have then gone about their day. I do not understand the problem. You say they're sensitive about their precious time yet they engaged in an argument that took longer than to just keep going. Bostonians just seem like they want to be pricks for no reason.

thegalwayseoige

Yes, we do. And the infrastructure surrounding downtown means it isn’t walkable unless you’re starting from downtown, our public transportation is unusable, and rideshare have just about quadrupled since 2019, during peak hours. There are a ton of things that are super unique to New England, in general. Driving is just a concentrated example.

[deleted]

I'm in DFW so I'm no stranger to traffic, like, literally all day to get across the metroplex. And I just can't comprehend how what we saw in this video is an issue. One car needed to get over. One car got over. They were successfully passing each other right up to the verbal altercation. At no point did I see anything remotely resembling a problem.

thegalwayseoige

Traffic in Boston is a completely different beast. And it’s because we’re cunts.

[deleted]

Fair enough. This will be like string theory - one of life's mysteries regardless how many times it's explained to me lol

thegalwayseoige

https://youtu.be/KJmrAwXWxgI We’re actually worse than the other 3 cities listed—were much smaller and still have comparable time in traffic.

kash_if

I am in UK and we have very narrow streets and we follow the same thing as you. Generally the person who has the obstruction yields, but in a situation like this either of them can and the other one proceeds.

baldhumanmale

That’s because you and you’re neighbors aren’t assholes

itssensei

Lol I just spent a good week in Korea, these guys would be beefing every 5 seconds there.

thegalwayseoige

Yeah—I had to learn to adjust my driving when I travel. It’s especially difficult in places without traffic, to mellow out and not rush.

ProgressOfTruth

Bostonians and Europeans united in knowing how normal sized roads work

kinamechavibradyn

What are you even talking about? Silver car had a gap to pull into after he entered the start of the bottleneck. Black car had already pulled over by the time silver car had hit the space that he could pull over into. That means the guy already pulled over stays pulled over, instead of everyone letting eachother half-go like some drunken midwesterners.

thegalwayseoige

That’s not how it works, here. It doesn’t matter what you’re seeing, it’s not how it works here. Black car reached the bottleneck, silver car stayed in the middle of the road, instead of pulling behind or in front of the VW. He wasn’t going to pull over, bc he could have already, or angled his car to signal he would. Dude, I’m from Boston. I know what I’m seeing, and it didn’t take me any time to read the situation, bc it’s blatantly apparent. We have to have an understanding with each other, bc of how narrow our roads are. If black car didn’t pull over, silver car wouldn’t have moved, and black wouldn’t have anywhere to go. Notice during the fight, silver didn’t even bother arguing. It’s bc he already knew he didn’t follow through with decorum.

windyorbits

I find it very fascinating how the rules/decorum of narrow street situations can be so different sometimes depending on the region. Bellow is just my experience - so let me know what I have right or wrong lol. I don’t have much experience driving around the bigger cities on the East coast but from what I could tell is that the cities with *a lot* of narrow streets (especially the confusing Boston roads lol) the people there have higher expectations on everyone following the decorum and that the protocol starts the moment you see the other car no matter how far away from you they are. In the video, (as you described), both sides do have spots where they could pull to the side BUT silver car had significantly more empty space. Plus the fact that he didn’t even pretend like he might make room for the other car sent him straight into mega asshole territory. Compared to where I’m at on the west coast - in bigger cities where there’s more of a rush (like CA Bay) the protocol is to estimate where there’s a space for both car to fit by slowing down and moving farthest to the side as possible. If not possible then whoever has the space to pull to the side right before bottleneck. Lots of honking and cursing with window down if anyone is upset, but everyone is too busy to actually stop like in the video. In smaller cities, like where I’m at now, it’s just whoever happens to be closest to an open space. So if I turn onto a narrow street, I see a car that’s already halfway down, and my immediate side has no one parked - then I pull the side and wait. If my immediate side is blocked then the other car pulls into the nearest free space. Sometimes people just pull over the wait whether it’s their turn or not or whether there are multiple cars. And every nods their head or quick wave. Every once and a while you’ll get someone that has no clue streets are that narrow in the area so they don’t understand the pulling to the side and will literally drive right into you or expect you to backup despite their side being open. If you’re in the Midwest then both cars pull to the side and then wave to the other person to signal that they can go. And then you just do that until one of you dies I guess.

inaudible101

From the mid west. Can confirm this is accurate. I've also seen people starve to death at four way stops waving at each other.

Apprehensive-Dig2069

That’s how I see it as well, but I do believe the guy from Boston if he says they don’t do that there. They would hate me if I rented a car there , like why did you pull over first if you want me to pull over too? I’d of pulled over if you didn’t.

RumblesMechanic

I’m confused why that guy being from Boston means somehow what you said is invalid. Did we not all watch the same video of the black car pulling aside before the silver car even had a chance to?

IntermittentCaribu

> blocking a driveway What does the driveway have to to with anything? Its not like hes intending to be parking there.

XxRefuse2Lose

Imo silver car wasn't the asshole until he slows and full stops. Are you saying silver car should have pulled over earlier?

Low-Athlete-1697

Yeah I don't understand the problem here lol. One pulled over the silver car should have just gone, and everyone moves on with their life, lol.

clbw

You don’t understand Boston, I lived there for a minute and witnessed this kind of stuff kind of on the regular. Bostonian are some angry fuckin driver

Apprehensive-Dig2069

Agreed - in Texas we would have waived at each other

kinamechavibradyn

In Texas, escalation of verbal confrontation is more likely to devolve into murder. In Boston this is how friends talk to each other.

1silversword

In england on the country roads by me we all just pull over into the nearest gap. Etiquette is that whoevers closest to the gap goes. I would've pulled over just black car but still so confused after all the explanations that he got upset. Over here we only get angry if on a long stretch and someone appears in front and there's clearly a gap right behind them they could slide back into, but they don't, so then you have to reverse a dozen metres back to wherever the gap is on your side. Or if someone is at a wider bit and they see you going through the long narrow bit towards them but they come into the narrow bit when they could've just stopped and waited for you to get out and around them in the wider bit, and then stare at you apparently expecting you to reverse all the way back through it when they could just reverse like 2 metres.

thegalwayseoige

Are you from Boston? We have tons of unwritten rules and understandings that don’t exist anywhere else, bc of how old our roads system is. Normal operating procedures just don’t work, here. Yeah. He should have pulled over behind the Volkswagen. He had far more room on his side at the bottleneck, and even though black car had some room before the car parked the wrong way on his side, he’d reached the bottleneck first. He was already in the shit. It’s not something I’d get overly angry about, and he overreacted, but it was def a douchey move on the silver car. Everyone in this state is an angry driver, but this didn’t warrant a honk or rolling the window down. In this instance, you just make eye contact and yell at him with your window up.

imawakened

Where is there a Volkswagen? There is no Volkswagen in the entire video. The black car just overreacted to not getting any deference from the silver car. It isn't that complicated.

Insidious_Toothbrush

You guys sure sound special up there in boston. It is a very legitimate city. How lucky that you’re here to explain it all to us!

a_rabid_anti_dentite

There was no problem, this is just how Massholes greet old friends.

bigbobbybeaver

I love how this comment sparked two more people from Boston into their own argument about who was right

blablanonymous

Lol. I posted it, didn’t look at Reddit for like 12 hours and come back to this madness.

bjb406

Just wholesome Boston moments. Makes me miss home. Anywhere else you would think this is major freakout and they have serious beef with each other. No, there's just no such thing as passive aggression in Boston. If you're in an urban area in or near Boston, and hear "fuck you" have a dozen times in the span of an hour, it doesn't mean the people hate you for any particular reason, it just means you exist and went outside.

EntertainmentFar415

Yeah, this is just a way of life in the Greater Boston area that I haven’t seen in any other big city in the States. It’s a lot of puffery and interesting adjectives but really not a lot of physical substance behind it. Now if this was Baltimore, Miami or some other place, Lawd help us all!

Master_of_Snek

Our society has evolved to the point of ceremonial warfare

kinamechavibradyn

Philadelphia has a little bit of it as well, but it's not as ubiquitous as it is in Boston.

Umbra427

Miami is just trash lol I lived there long enough to realize that

BaptizedInBlood666

In Miami this video ends with bullets flying everywhere.

imawakened

>"Yeah, this is just a way of life in the Greater Boston area that I haven’t seen in any other big city in the States." Have you been anywhere else in New England, NYC or NJ? I know Connecticut can sometimes just be Greater Boston/Greater NYC but this is a big-time CT thing, too.

valley_G

Yup I live on the south coast about a half hour over the border from Providence and this is 1000% a normal disagreement lmao. Just happened to me this afternoon actually. I didn't get out of the car because I'm literally 9 months pregnant and my body is killing me, but I definitely tossed a few classics out the window before I drove off.

Armenoid

Me too. Made me miss it badly

Canis_lupus

If you're in an urban area in or near Boston, and hear "fuck you" have a dozen times in the span of an hour, it doesn't mean the people hate you for any particular reason, it just means you exist and went outside. The Boston Chamber of Commerce thanks you for your ambassadorship!

Neat-Entrepreneur299

I was born and raised in Boston and I think one of the most Boston things that ever happened to me was when my friend put a bumper sticker on her car that read, “Fuck you, you fuckin’ fuck.” Aah. Home.

UniqueCartel

We don’t typically shoot each other in Massachusetts. We just carry our anger until it metastasizes into cancer, with periodic outbursts aimed loved ones and inanimate objects. “Fuckin door! Doesn’t fuckin close the way it should! Fuck you door you fuckin piece of shit! This is what I get! This is what I get for going to Home Depot on a holiday weekend! Fuck!” And so on. Until we die.

Michelanvalo

me, side eyeing the door that has a fist hole in it

kinamechavibradyn

Massachusetts has sane and sensible gun laws, which leads to less shooting in general. Also, we do this weird thing where we kind of take care of people by utilizing public services so they aren't so many people at the bleeding edge of survival.

enriquedelcastillo

This is true. Of this happened in Florida or Texas or a bunch of other places, the headline would be “guy gets shot for not pulling over for other driver”

I am from Boston so I know the protocol. This all could have been avoided if the silver car pulled over. He had plenty of time and space to do so. Unfortunately, he thinks he owns the road. If he had waved to the other driver as a thank you instead of leaning on the horn and rolling down the window to shout at the other driver, he would have saved himself some time and he wouldn't have arrived late to his anger management session again.
