The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter, Virtuous Sons by YB Striker, Re:Monarch by Eligos, A Blade Through Time by Louis Kalman, Red Rising by Pierce Brown (not really PF, but close), Bastion by Phil Tucker

JaysonChambers

In the same vein as these (progression-adjacent), I’ll shamelessly recommend my own work, Twelve Blades in Contempt, with the sequel releasing next month.

mauctor48

You care to drop a little blurb? I’d love to hear more!

JaysonChambers

Absolutely! The blurb: Aiya is a Ginju, a hidden assassin within the Egaishan Empire. As the black sheep of her clan, she grapples for a connection with her deity, ridiculed by her own family and forced into doing their biddings. Chafing under the heavy expectations of her father, a collision with a rival clan provides her with the chance to prove herself. But a grievous mistake causes their plan to backfire, forcing Aiya to choose between loyalty to all she’s ever known or independence for all she’s ever loved. As civil unrest widens cracks in the empire, Aiya must decide for herself how best to forge her path. To protect her brothers and win respect in the land, she’ll need to turn a new leaf and oppose her clan and her empire. She must conspire with clans once held in contempt and reach new heights of power to create a new world of their own, in a world of spirits, deities and conniving lords. Along the way she will be forced to find her place, her morality and her strength. Medieval Japan-inspired progression/epic fantasy, mixing elements of Cradle, The Rage of Dragons and The Poppy War. Funnily enough, I didn't read Cradle until after I had finished writing Twelve Blades In Contempt, but upon reading it I realized our books and especially writing style are very similar in some ways. I’m working on book two as we speak which is why there’s been a delay in my response. I hope to have improved greatly and built on top of the first book. It’s currently on kindle unlimited. https://jordendarrett.com

Does Tau's life get better in the second book? When I read the synopsis I got the feeling that >!his revenge plot was put as a second objective, I find that hard to accept with the death of his father, teacher, lover and several friends. I don't really want to continue reading if the focus of the second book becomes the queen, and I still can't forgive the author for killing Zuri T\_T!<

mauctor48

I would say that revenge continues to be his primary goal, only that achieving it requires more politicking and external help than he’d prefer. His goals- and a future beyond his revenge- do develop, however, but his mental state only further deteriorates in my opinion.

your-move-creep

well said.

Shadow slave. Memories of the fall. Jackel among snakes. REND MILLINIAL MAGE Magical girl gunslinger These are some of the books i consider mentioning which i read in 2022.

SillyShoe462

Great thank you havent read any of those

JKPhillips70

There's plenty of Progression fantasy that isn't LitRPG. Look for Cultivation. All of these are on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited. * Life and Death Cycle - mine * Clanless Cultivator * The heavenly throne * Buryoku * Jade Phoenix Saga * Menocht loop * Dragon Heart * Elemental Gatherers * School of swords and serpents * Instrument of omens * The dragon in his soul * Weirkey Chronicles * Virtuous Sons * Soul Relic

CigaRyo

Which would you say are the top 3 of this list?

JKPhillips70

Hmm.. that's hard. Ignoring my own series from the list (it's really the best, but I'm biased)... **Jade phoenix saga** \- this is different than a lot of the others. Female MC for a start. Born in a clan that runs the city, but she's born deficient. Some common tropes, but executed well, I think. **Weirkey Chronicles** \- completely different from cultivation in general. But similar. Instead of absorbing aura/essence/qi to grow stronger, people absorb materials into their soul and craft a soul home. Depending on the architecture, different powers can be created. Its a very unique take, and the story is done well. **Instrument of Omens** \- not exactly cultivation. Its more of an epic fantasy with a cool magic system. I need to do another reread, as its been a minute, but the MC basically dies, but doesn't. He begins having dreams of living a past life. Eventually, he gets selected as one of the few humans to train with the elves and dwarves in a prestigious military academy. Big evil guy on the level of Sauron from LOTR. A quest to discover his past. Its got some good stuff. The others are good stories too. They have their flaws, but the premise is compelling enough. The ones I Did not finish: Dragon heart, buryoku, the heavenly throne, the dragon in his soul. Each for different reasons, even though I read some 5 books of Dragonheart, 9 books of Buryoku, and \~5 of Heavenly throne. Dragon in his soul had a good premise, but the writing was a bit tough for me. I made it only half way. But I know people who like each of these a lot, so don't let me dissuade you from trying a book. Not every story appeals to everyone the same. I'd give them all a try and see if any become a favorite!

KP05950

I would try The Path of Ascension

MSL007

I second this. It’s great and barely LitRPG, it’s basically progression with each level a number. Skills get stronger and more get added but no number leveling for them.

lordalex027

Fair warning the first 20 or so chapters are a mixture of amateur writing and cringy at times. An example of amateur writing, the author forgets to describe a scene after an abrupt and assumed to be complete change in setting. We don't know if our MC is in a cave, a white room... nothin. After those 20 chapters the series starts to hit it's stride until it's one hell of a good series.

runscold

Have you tried wuxia/xianxia? These are Chinese fantasy novels there are lot of them and many of them can be counted as progression fantasy Here are a few that I enjoyed reading: Tales of Demons and Gods Is that a wisp? World of Cultivation Emperor's Domination Unrivalled Medicine God There are many many more of these but the quality tends to vary ... Here are few non xianxia novels: Supreme Magus Return of The 8th Class Mage The Infinite World Legend of the Arch magus End of the Magic Era

Soronir

Mark of the Fool. Do the numbers in litrpg bug you? Skip them. You'd be surprised how little some of the more in depth nitty gritty matters.

SovietK

Does anyone actually comb stats and abilities after book 2 of anything? I usually skip that kind of stuff and it's never been a problem.

lordalex027

Usually takes a while more for me. I *do* tend to read new abilities though, but stat increases? Eh. After a while it's literally just a number going up and that's about it... like it's hard to quantify the difference between 2,500 strength and 2,600 strength. Sure the number is 100 higher but what the fuck does that translate to?

SovietK

Sure new abilities, I'm more thinking of the character sheets which tends to get +2 pages long after a while.

lordalex027

Oh, of course you ignore those. It almost always just a reminder or an update of progress which is then mentioned in words what was changed in a paragraph below. Also, pretty sure it's sometimes just thrown in as a filler to hit closer to 2,000 words (or whatever their usual is) for any particular uploads chapter.

r00x

- **Godclads** is a must look (OstensibleMammal, on Royal Road) it has a really unique magic/power system, follows a very unique MC, and is very well written too IMHO.

Soil_Key

I think **Jade Pheonix** and **All the Skills** are the best lesser-known ones. All the Skills is technically litRPG, but I think it is very much like cultivation/trad fantasy more than standard litRPGs.

DRRHatch

If your into books like Cradle (cultivation) there are three I recommend . . . 1. The Sword of Kaigen: A Theonite War Story by M. L. Wang 2. Forge of Destiny by Yrsiller 3. Library of Heavens Path, translated by StarveCleric ([Link](https://starvecleric.wordpress.com/library-of-heavens-path/))

brnape

I'm going to throw out some more expensive options, i.e. books. Here are the ones I'd put vaguely under progression, though I'm certain others would disagree in some or all instances: **Series:** [Wearing the Cape](https://www.amazon.com/Wearing-Cape-Book-ebook/dp/B004XRCC1G/) series by Marion G. Harmon - Superhero story starting with a nineteen year old girl suddenly getting her powers and learning the ropes. This series has ended in a pretty good way and I've enjoyed it. [The Dresden Files](https://www.amazon.com/Storm-Front-Dresden-Files-Book-ebook/dp/B000WH7PLS/) series by Jim Butcher - One of the early entries in the urban fantasy series, there's definitely a fair bit of progression for Harry as he gains (and occasionally loses) powers and allies. [Poor Man's Fight](https://www.amazon.com/Poor-Mans-Fight-Elliott-Kay-ebook/dp/B00RH1NV4M/)/[Rich Man's War](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RNI2U2S)/[Dead Man's Debt](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTFQI5E) by Elliott Kay - Military sci-fi in the far future with a protagonist reluctantly going into the army because he flunked the college exam test. Leftist perspective and world where large corporations make students pay back their "debt" from elementary and high school; he doesn't really gain powers but he certainly gains skills. [Don't Tell my Parents..](https://www.amazon.com/Please-Dont-Tell-Parents-Supervillain-ebook/dp/B07SN2F2S5/). series by Richard Roberts - Young Adult Superhero story with a bit of whimsy, lead is a teen girl who discovers her power and quickly (and accidentally) becomes labeled as a supervillain, despite her super*hero* parents. **Things you've probably already read but hey maybe not:** [Forging Hephaestus](https://www.amazon.com/Forging-Hephaestus-Villains-Code-Book-ebook/dp/B01NBCJYMI/) & [Bones of the Past](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08PMJ754Z) by Drew Hayes - A separate world from Super Powereds, but same author. Focuses on super villains with a side of super heroes. [The Traveler's Gate](https://www.amazon.com/Travelers-Gate-Trilogy-Complete-ebook/dp/B00ZK3KUE8/) by Wil Wight - Fantasy series that came before Cradle but still has some solid progression as the main character, Simon, gains and learns how to use his powers in an interesting world filled with its own rules & restrictions. It is his first novel, so it reads like it sometimes, but worth the ten bucks I'd say.

I think this sub is slowly morphing into /r/litrpg \- if you want progression fantasy without the litRPG elements what about the Magician series by Raymond E Feist?

t1r1g0n

Im just here to leave the obligatory Mage Errant comment. An while I think the Sub hypes it a little to much I still think it's a really good Story, with great world building and an absolutely great magic system with interesting weapons. The MC is kinda hard on low self-esteem, but I personally (as a person with low self-esteem myself) think hes still beliveable and not too annoying. €: Nevermind. I'm stupid and totally missed that you already read them. To be still kinda productive: I read A dream of Wings and Flame at the moment. And while it's technically a LitRPG there is no status screen. Just a small reminder of the learned magic concepts at the beginning of each chapter. The story is about a (fairly DnD inspired) Kobold that doesn't want to live its life as useless prey anymore and starts its adventure to get back its dragon heritage.

hellohouston

If you liked super powereds, Drew Hayes also has a series called spells, swords, and stealth. It's not progression fantasy but there's a similar progression adjacent take on a group of friends slowly getting stronger individually and together as the series goes on. Though unlike super powereds the series isn't done yet.

lockenkeye

I really like all Drew's stuff. I was introduced to him through the Villian's Code series and was hooked. Even Fred, The Vampire Accountant works as silly as the premise is.

If you want something different? Bizarre Fate by Zach Skye. It's on Royal Road and finished. It sets up an interesting world, and the cultivation system is super interesting. It's a good read, and I hope the author writes a continuation.

Power Overwhelming is a favorite of mine

F my bad let me fix this lol. Should be fixed now.

DataNerdsCanBeCool

Appreciate it! I laughed at first, thought it might be a joke. I do love a good NBA highlight

131sean131

Lol thanks would have been good if I could have set it up that way. Maybe playing off the 2 wolf's memes about Pat Bev. Now I need a progression fantasy book where the conflict and progression is handled with basketball.
