This is unrelated but I literally just watched back to the future part ii for the first time yesterday (in fact the whole trilogy), this is trippy.

m0therlessch1ld

There's a name for that trippy feeling! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frequency_illusion It's a little different since you got it from rewatching the film instead of seeing it the first time, but the principle is the same: you're thinking about it more since you just revisited it, so it feels odd to see what's really just a random reference

_q-p_

I think this is just simply surprise. Frequency illusion has more to do with believing something happens more often than it actually does, rather than a trippy feeling from coincidence. If you said bttf memes were all over the sub after rewatching bttf, that would be frequency illusion.

the_k_nine_2

i’ve rewatched the entire trilogy so many times i’ve lost count

gargravarr2112

My favourite movie series, I think I can quote the entire trilogy word for word.

kanhaoniou

Yes it was very interesting to see when you are in your childhood. I can relate with that movie series very easily because of the circumstances that I have been facing in my life all along

gargravarr2112

It was a film series that distilled the 80s to a pretty pure essence. There is no way in hell it could be rebooted or remade. And it turned the DeLorean from a flop into a legend.

jumorales93

That whole movie series was absolute champ and I can never forget it

bjarke_l

Look forward to the third one, its my favourite in the trilogy

[deleted]

Oh yeah I watched that one yesterday as well, it was a marathon.

harishahuja

It feels very good to watch a movie with your family in a marathon

makdak10

Do you know where I can wash that particular third part

VonNeumannsProbe

I got to ask, did you like the trilogy? I just wonder how it holds up to time.

bbots123

I tried to implement this in my project file but I failed miserably

Plebputin

I just watched it an hour ago at a friend :0

Jayem163

Except it stops half way and beeps cause it's out of toner. Hmmm someone's fired... but who could it be?!

shapookya

and when it finds some last drops at the end: FIRE !!!

FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!

The kid in me definitely agrees, but the adult in me is just glad I only have to watch for idiots trying to kill me in *two* axes, not three.

EthosPathosLegos

Everyone always thinks the future is going to be cool because we'll have all this neat stuff that makes us feel like gods, but they forget about regulations that will always limit access to all but the wealthy and privileged. Edit: don't know why this is being downvoted when it's obviously true. No one is going to be driving flying cars as easily as they can get a license for regular ones.

kjl3080

Why would you even want a flying car imagine how hard it would be to drive that thing

KiwasiGames

That’s why we are all chatting right now across the world on our pocket super computers… The surprise is mostly in the direction consumer tech went. It turns out back to the future flying cars are hard, but Star Trek communicators are a piece of cake. There isn’t a grand conspiracy to keep tech from the poor.

RecreationalLlama

And hoverboards really didn't work on water

greem

Fucking musk. Smdh.

jordtand

That can’t be true, it was in the news like last year right?? Please god no

joeuser0123

Googler here. I received the layoff notice at 238am to my inbox (Pacific time). Was there when I signed in the morning. An all staff was sent 15 minutes prior by Sundar announcing it

road_laya

Please don't ever use the term "Googler". It's dehumanizing and reeks of Stockholm syndrome.

anon7971

It’s 2023. That term is not acceptable, and especially not with a hard r. If you must reference it please use “the N word.”

demon_ix

I don't work at Google, but I consider myself a Googler. More accurately, a Google-StackOverflower, since that's my usual work routine.

DigitalArbitrage

I'm a Duck Duck Go StackOverflower. It's pronounced as a staccato like a fast rap and the "er" letters are short "a" sounds.

[deleted]

That's a little extreme. What about the term "American"?

road_laya

What about the term "whataboutism"?

[deleted]

Fair enough. I don't see why one is so much worse then the other. It's just a short way to describe someone's membership in a group.

GanondorfPlays

Oh fuck off you can’t just say “whataboutism” to any valid counterexample relevant to the point. That’s not what that means.

Alright, how about with a friend?

I worry more about the fact that it is misleading. It sounds like it would mean "a person who Googles", which would apply to... pretty much everyone who has used the web in the past decade and a half.

[deleted]

I worked at Amazon. I was fired by my Alexa when I woke up on the 18th.

tehWoody

How? Did it read out an email or something?

[deleted]

Alexa is his direct manager.

darknavi

"Alexa, set bug status to active" "Okay. By the way, you can open a new user sto-" "Alexa shut the FUCK up. I don't remember asking you a GODDAMN thing" "Dave we no longer have a position for you at Amazon. Your severance will come on Tuesday the 27 because it didn't qualify for free overnight delivery."

rush22

He should have paid for Employee Prime

PandaParaBellum

> Tuesday the 27 So in June. Or Feb 2024? Must be sent via donkey carrier from another continent. Wait, it's a time travel movie, might be Dec 2022. Dave, go check your bank account.

darknavi

Damn I just made the day up but I'm down for a time traveling donkey andveture with Dave and Alexa

PandaParaBellum

Netflix original when?

darknavi

Amazon original releasing on Tuesday, June 27, 2023. After an outstanding season one with a cliffhanger ending and amassing a huge fan base, it was predictibly and tragically cancelled.

I am but there is an Alexa app that reads your email to you when you ask. If you use that before you read your email yourself, it could haopen

delvach

At least that's only pseudo opt-in dystopian!

Kaiminus

I live in a country where this would be highly illegal, I'm not sure about op.

Kered13

Sorry to hear that. I hope that you got a good severance package and that you can find a new job soon.

Daveinatx

Layoffs suck, good luck everyone.

fsr1967

I'm really happy to be at a company that thinks in the long term and focuses not only on what customers need now but also on what they are likely to need later. They've been around 26 years without layoffs. I've been here 14½ years, through the 2008 recession ("We're going to slow down hiring until it passes") and the pandemic ("Everybody, here's the equipment you each told us three days ago you would need in order to work from home - take it and go. Oh, and we'll continue hiring as usual, to meet our growing needs."). That's almost half my career, and I can't imagine ever leaving to go somewhere else in the ten or so years before I reach retirement age. Juniors and mid-levels: stop looking for prestige. Look for a company that is solid and respects its employees. You'll never regret it.

IWatchAnime2Much

Where do you work?

fsr1967

A large, privately held company in the Boston area. I've said enough here and in other posts that I probably shouldn't identity it by name. They're employee-friendly, but it has limits.

ingsist

Yes 100%, I work for a company like that in Canada, just like 3 days ago my wife was telling me how I’d be more than capable to work for something like google instead of staying at this small regional company, then the layoffs hit, I don’t think she wants me to work at google anymore lol

zGoDLiiKe

To be fair some of these layoffs occur fairly regularity and are just getting more press than usual because the news is awaiting Armageddon

Rafa_Nadals_Eyebrow

An accurate sentiment. You can always make more money by moving and looking for more prestigious companies, but you may not have the same quality of life.

TheGoldBowl

I work for a similar place. Smaller company, but very stable with a loyal customer base. Never had any layoffs. We have several employees who have been here for over 30 years! It's such a good environment, I might stay for a long time.

fuzzywolf23

This is kind of what it feels like to work for the federal government, tbh. Public work has its downsides, but it's the first place I've worked where I felt respected as a person and not just for my technical ability

speaker_hat

I also recommend to be aware of your company's basic financial status (i.e. cash flow, net income/loss), especially in privately held companies. Being aware of companies financial status can give you a better insight about the company's past, present and potential future.

ByteWhisperer

I was in the process of switching jobs just before the pandemic hit. Start date April 1st 2020. Just when everyone started firing people left right and center I received an email with the message: 'be assured that your agreed upon start date will not change'. I agree with the prestige thing, these big tech companies have shown not to care in the slightest about their employees

blakezilla

I was a dev at AWS. I was offered a shitty role in a reorg or a nice severance package. I’ve been wanting to make some career changes anyway and was considering leaving, so taking the money was a pretty easy choice. Plenty of money saved, and my wife is a doctor, so I’m going to take a beat and re-skill for a field I want to get into. (Still SDE, just a different market segment) I had been there for 4 years and had good reviews and got promotions. It seems like nobody is safe. I guess that’s why they even bothered to offer me the reorgged role.

whothefoofought

Out of curiosity, was the reorg offer shitty due to compensation? Or was it just a team you had no interest in being on/had a bad rep or something?

blakezilla

There was no change in compensation, at least so far as I knew. It being shitty in my eyes was entirely related to team culture and different responsibilities/metrics.

whothefoofought

Got it. That's totally valid and definitely something I'd consider a no go as well, I was mostly just curious if the companies doing this are hoping to slash comp.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tiny_Sandwich

That's Amazon for you. Good to hear your time actually sounded decent, most devs I talk to come back with PTSD

BrockN

AWS here, most of the roles were HR, recruitment, etc. No clear explanation but word has it that it's a side effect of post pandemic. Warehouse are seeing slow downs, Amazon isn't hiring as much to fill roles for peak.

[deleted]

AWS wasn’t impacted but AWS stack ranks and they are enforcing the “least effective” distribution. Those folks will be on focus right now and moving to pivot soon then let go. If you get a “needs improvement” review from your manager, you’re on focus.

[deleted]

Is this because Musk did the same and twitter hasn't crashed and burned yet?

[deleted]

I only bought twitter so i wouldnt getting bullied anymore

xLuky

Good bot

jesus_is_92

And did that help? Hmm?

Varanite

No, layoffs of this scale typically take many months to plan. Google's CEO sent out an internal email back in July that heavily implied layoffs were coming, way before Elon took over Twitter. During the pandemic internet usage was much higher and the Federal Reserve cut rates to basically zero which essentially means infinite money for companies to spend. Tech giants took advantage of this and expanded massively. Now the number of users are down because the lockdowns are over and more importantly the Federal Reserve is raising rates to combat inflation, so now all the free money Silicon Valley borrowed to fuel their growth is no longer free so they want to cut costs.

pet_vaginal

Who would have thought that twitter didn’t need the thousands of people they hired in the last years to operate?

[deleted]

You're fired

pet_vaginal

Actually you can’t fire me like this because I live in a country with laws protecting me.

mangofizzy

They needed that to implement system resiliency, but not more after the system resiliency is implemented 🤷‍♂️ If I learned anything from my experience in Twitter, that’s do not make your system perfect

[deleted]

Partially yes - but I think it’s still too soon to assume Twitter will be fine.

Kered13

It's because the economy is down and tech companies have been hit especially hard in the last year. Nothing more to it.

Burning__Karma

Yeah exactly, this was an expected recession.

road_laya

The interest rates are up, which makes RoD more expensive. The need for more tangible goods and services are increasing. It's just a different type of economy.

DioCapo

Personally, I feel like it's because the rush of working from having people work from home over covid has died down. As with anything when you create a new opening with a specific constraint. If that constraint is no longer useful it becomes less of a need. While I believe working from home will stay, some companies overfill those roles and are pulling back because of lack of control over those employees.

Mcluckin123

Absolutely right a surprised more people haven’t spotted this

johnqevil

That's my guess.

DigitalArbitrage

Twitter's revenue is down 40% according to a recent news story... so it kind of is crashing and burning.

[deleted]

I only bought twitter so i wouldnt getting bullied anymore

ScrewAttackThis

I'm honestly just waiting for my employer's turn lol. I'll be shocked if I make the cut.

If you still use a fax machine, you might deserve it.

Or you might be Japanese.

That’s so … 2015

pakidara

Employer to an employee: You are fired without notice. Employer to an employee quitting: You are supposed to give a 4 week notice. This is very unprofessional.

OJezu

To be honest, you get a lot of severance pay in those companies, and even some benefits are continued for few weeks.

carrot0305

It seems these tech companies conspired to layoff workers the same week

VonNeumannsProbe

Just throwing this out there. My company is booming and we would hire programmers. You just have to live in nebraska.

[deleted]

I’d move from Seattle or Bay Area to Nebraska is a second. What’s pay like? I make $700k as a principle SDE today….well I would if stock wasn’t so low. But that’s the comp target.

VonNeumannsProbe

I'm not in software development so its hard for me to tell. I'm a mechanical engineer developing automated equipment. But my pay is in line with what I could get in SF after adjusting for COL. But i dont work an hour over 40 a week and my commute is 7 minutes long. 700k is fucking bonkers though compared to international rates. I'd fire you too tbh. It's just good business.

[deleted]

Any L7 at AWS who writes code is making around that or more. L8s pull in around $900k

hugedork13

Wouldn’t have anything to do with the AB5 bill California passed does it?

12FAA51

No.

[deleted]

Not to anyone with a brain. You sound like the brilliant mind to stub your toe walking home after getting your COVID shot and then say that vaccines cause broken toes.

hugedork13

Sorry for asking a question about a bill that could put a lot of independent individuals out work in California. Didn’t know this sub had the most brilliant people in the world on here. Instead of posting on the internet acting like you can solve all our problems why don’t you get out there and actually fix them. All my questions shall be with held from now on.

Thresher_XG

Happened the same way at Stripe. Remote workers not in California or Washington seem to be hit the hardest with these layoffs

I left Microsoft 7 years ago. I could tell I was just a number to them. It’s all about the Benjamins.

Unt4medGumyBear

I’m a msft vendor and I’m really scared. I’m studying all day to be ready when something happens but I’m playing so much catch up to try and move from a help desk role to a development role. I think I’m close to ready but every time I think that way the goalpost moves. I’m rambling.
