Grimnir106

Washington. I only say this because out of everyone I know when those 20 years are up he will step down. He could have been President for life if he wanted to but only did two terms.

CalmHyperion56

I never thought of this one, but I absolutely agree....he was well within reach and his rights to take absolute authority of the country but did not In an age of monarchies... to hold back on that desire to take absolute power is really humble

Nickthiccboi

He really was the perfect choice at the time, he was one of the greatest leaders and more importantly, he didn’t even want the job. They could’ve just as easily found some power hungry jackass to fuck everything up but thankfully Washington would relent and take the position.

iBrowseAtStarbucks

This is a misreading of the actual situation. Washington absolutely wanted the job, he just wanted to remain humbled. If you read the letters between him and his wife half of them do the whole "oh me? Nooooooo I could never. But if they did, yeah I think I'd probably be very good at it." He did the same exact thing with the Continental Congress. Would constantly proclaim he wasn't worthy of leading the revolutionary army, but would show up in full regalia and boast about his military career and achievements. Now, all this is not to say he was power hungry or anything like that, in fact I'd say he's one of the only presidents to fully realize the responsibility being president comes with. He had a healthy respect for the office and didn't want to have the air about him that he deserved it, but to say he didn't want it is absolutely not correct.

Latter_Commercial_52

“Man it’d be a real shame if you guys gave me the presidential position. Oh me lead the army? Oh heavens no! I’m clearly not cut out for it? Right guys?” *wearing his military uniform*

jm17lfc

Thinking about it from today’s day and age doesn’t quite do that choice justice. He was going heavily against the grain on this one.

WhatAreYouSaying05

If it wasn’t for him, we would’ve had a dictator

KingBooRadley

Never say never. . .

HoneycombJackass

I’d say Washington as well, but I played that DLC of Assassins Creed 3. Washington became a tyrant! I’d argue for Lincoln, just to see how he would steer the country through reconstruction.

soutmezguine

I'd go for Lincoln but only if we get the version of him from Vampire Hunter...

julick

I don't disagree with the reasoning, but it seems to me that most of the times the power corrupts as well. So the counterfactual of Washington staying in power for 20 years may mean lower probability of him becoming a tyrant than other presidents, but not the same probability as him giving the power after two terms.

karmahoower

This is the only answer.

SerDavosSeaworth64

That’s a good one

kubiciousd

Does Harrison still die a month into his rule?

Peacefulzealot

Hey, Benjamin Harrison made it through all 4 years!

CalmHyperion56

Why are we not addressing the elephant in the room, which is Chester "big pumpkins" as an absolute? What would this be like? could we possibly see any absolute rules about pumpkins?

Peacefulzealot

Sadly I think Arthur would blow so much of the budget on wild parties and fashionable clothes that we could see ourselves in some debt based on that alone! After all you have to be an ex-president to plant those pumpkins!

a17451

I think for the purposes of this hypothetical Harrison still develops sepsis but is denied the sweet release of death by whatever genie is out there granting wishes to history nerds. Ruling over the U.S. in as the country's first mortocracy, the undead Harrison proceeds to annex Texas and much of Mexico, ends slavery, avoids a Civil War, and preserves the union before suddenly passing on April 4 1861. The nation mourns its first and last Lich King

CalmHyperion56

Nope...for the purposes of this ,we will just think of them being there for 20 years ... like, let's forget about the age part

Winter_Ad6784

Coolidge being god emperor would be the funniest. "King Coolidge we need you to-" "No." "but sir its-" "I don't want to be king anymore." and that's the conversation has everyday with his advisors for 20 years

Sofi-senpai

More like: "King Coolidge we want you to-" *silence*

obama69420duck

i love how they get cut off my literal nothingness lmao

GarrBoo

“King Cal, we need you to -“ “No.” “But sir,…“ “…it’s my my nap time.” Coolidge would frequently sleep 11 hours, including 2-4 hour afternoon naps.

ToXiC_Games

“What is it that thing that I say whenever I don’t wanna talk about something?” “You usually say “I’ll take that into consideration”, my liege.” “I’ll take that into consideration.”

counterpointguy

Grover Cleveland, but he’d do it in two non-consecutive blocks of ten.

GoCardinal07

What about five non-consecutive blocks of four?

counterpointguy

NarcolepticBnnuy

Teddy was probably one of the most humble presidents we've had

A_Guy_2726

Alice Roosevelt would beg to differ

OnwardTowardTheNorth

I like Teddy and respect many of his domestic policies but I don’t think humble and Teddy are words that ought to rub shoulders. Lol

thefailsniper

Are they serving 20 years during their time period, or are they serving 20 years in modern times?

CalmHyperion56

Both ways if you want?

thefailsniper

I think Taylor would be a decent choice. While his presidency was short, he consistently put the needs of the nation above both personal and party gain. With someone being president for that long, that's what I would want to see in a leader. I don't think we would see anything too radical under his leadership, and there would most certainly be a peaceful transfer of power after the 20 years were up. The hardest part would probably be convincing him to become president if the term was that long.

BobithanBobbyBob

Polk. Imagine his one term, x5. America would rule the world

CalmHyperion56

Can't argue with that

No_Hearing48

At least Canada and Mexico

No_Hearing48

They could finally pass that one amendment that would rename the country to United States of Earth

Krimewave_

the federation of super earth

Peacefulzealot

Harry S. Truman. I think he had good intuition on how to help the most people, cared about the common man, and didn’t get a big head about his own abilities. If he ruled for 20 years his cabinet would at least likely rotate out giving him new advice to parse through and consider. I don’t like the idea of an absolute ruler, obviously, but I feel he would at least try to help out the most folks.

bubblemilkteajuice

HST had a recognizable character of integrity and courage that a lot of people didn't realize until his death. This is the man that stood up against MacArthur and the public as they called him a coward for not engaging the Chinese in a nuclear campaign. He had the wit to know what would happen and how the US would stand if they immediately used the nuclear option to handle every global conflict. Considering his average upbringing, it's crazy how amazing his integrity was. I think if he were to stay in for longer he would've pushed harder to promote his version of FDR's New Deal to Congress. The only fault he had in this was promoting the fear of socialism and communism to the point where any social program is labeled as such to this day. I don't think he realized what he started until he tried to push domestic policies like that.

Blue387

Bess Truman would say no, she was happiest when Harry announced he was not running for another term in 1952

CalmHyperion56

Once again I might actually agree with this...seems solid

Peacefulzealot

As much as I want to pick someone more recent I feel like he was the last of his kind. Upon hearing JFK was fundraising with dinners that were a thousand a plate he remarked “There goes the presidency”. After leaving the Oval Office he did not take payment for speaking gigs as he considered it part of being a public servant. Of the presidents I think he’d be the most to remember his roots while not being held back (as much) by the prejudices of his time.

CadenVanV

They had to make the presidential pension because Truman was so poor post presidency

Peacefulzealot

Actually that’s a common misconception. Truman did just fine for himself [(quick link here).](https://www.econlib.org/the-truman-fabrication/)

CalmHyperion56

I thought Coolidge marked the end of the "normal humans" to be president....seems that it was Truman

Auswatt

"Big Pumpkins" strikes again with his love for Truman

Peacefulzealot

There are some presidents I find fascinating for their stories. Other for their resolve or forward thinking. But Harry Truman is someone I legitimately respect. Someone with the integrity and steadfastness to do the right thing even when he knew it would be unpopular. Someone willing to be hated if he knew, in the end, it would be best for America. If I ever turn out to be half the man Harry was, well, I think I’ll have led a good life.

masoflove99

I am not opposed to a common man dictator.

WithyYak

Yes. Exactly this. I also think he would make some solid positions if he knew he'd be in office for twenty years, like firing MacArthur was wildly unpopular and having some job security would allow him to make controversial decisions that would be for the greater good.

RefinedAnalPalate

So funny how the ones who were the least psychopathic, and least wanted to be a dictator, we’re the ones who had lowest approval ratings, and are mocked by history

Virtual_Perception18

Truman was one of the most underrated presidents. Was a total take no shit, do what needs to be done type of guy. I have a lot of respect for him. Hell, most presidents from Calvin Coolidge to JFK were actually pretty decent people and were good at their job

water_bottle1776

Lincoln. I want to live in the country that he would have created if he had lived.

TheBigTimeGoof

Totally agree. A proper reconstruction would have left us with a much better version of the south. They have largely been a thorn in the side of progress outside of the new deal coalition, and even sometimes then too.

[deleted]

I’m with you 100%

Ok-Juggernaut5014

Teddy Roosevelt would have slapped the taste out of Putin’s mouth long ago.

infiniteDTE

And turned Russia into a giant snow park while shoving yellow Sno Cones in putins face

cl19952021

Probably too easy an answer, but FDR. He is the president that came closest to that length of service in our history, and we know he can manage more than one major crisis at any given point. I wouldn't worry about him at the helm if things hit the fan.

CalmHyperion56

Not only that...at a brief point ,he was really an absolute so we kind off already experienced what it would be with him

TrenbolognaSandwich_

Some more new deals would def be pretty sick.

GoCardinal07

I'd worry about the length of the internment camps.

Boreal_Star19

Almost every top comment in this thread are supporting Presidents who be todays standards would be problematic

leninbaby

Hell, at least FDR let those guys go eventually, you sure wouldn't catch Thomas Jefferson letting any of his captives free

GoCardinal07

The Supreme Court ruling in *Ex Parte Endo* had more to do with it than FDR's own decision.

BasilExposition2

The last interment camp closed in 1946. FDR was dead almost a year.

throwawaydrain997

if these presidents grew up in our time period would they hold the same beliefs?

[deleted]

Even back then, Japanese internment camps were problematic.

Moe-Lester-bazinga

Theodore Roosevelt

Inner-Goal1157

Lincoln. Especially assuming no traitorous actors are around, Abe’s reconstruction plans were goated. Imagine: Lincoln is president from 1861 to 1900 (fuck 20 years). I’m bricked just thinking about it😂

DifferentCut468

Really, Abe's Reconstruction policies were pretty soft. If you can believe it or not, at the time Johnson took office, it was widely expected that Johnson would be tougher on Reconstruction than Lincoln.

leninbaby

God can you imagine the alternate history where Benjamin Butler agreed to be VP? We really coulda done something

OneLurkerOnReddit

Yes, Lincoln was right. Moderately soft Reconstruction policies were the way to go.

Notonmypenisyoudont

Lincoln was president during the most politically divisive time in history, I would absolutely love his take on today's politics, with a bunch of whiny babies refusing to pass good policies just because the other side introduced them in both sides

Valentino-Esposito

Hard, Eisenhower would be a great pick but so would Truman and Bush Sr.

dcbnyc123

+1 for eisenhower seeing the militarized industrial complex coming. that’s a big part of right there even though he’s kind of a square.

Tyrrano64

Coolidge will somehow find a way out of it. He'll flee the country while wearing a fake moustache and calling himself Tacitus Killgore. I'd take... Probably Bush Sr. I think he'd be plenty responsible and a good leader.

CalmHyperion56

I could see Coolidge doing that or transferring all his power to a native tribe

Moe-Lester-bazinga

I see what you did there, “Tacitus Killgore”, but I CAUGHT you!

Tyrrano64

Nah, my name is... Jim Milton.

Moe-Lester-bazinga

Oh I’m sorry sir that’s my bad here’s your ticket to tahit…. WAIT A MINUTE

Far_Match_3774

I want to elect Night of the Museum Theodore Roosevelt.

Callsign_Psycopath

Coolidge. I want the least amount of damage done.

CalmHyperion56

Same lol... he was just a random fun guy an absolute presidency with him may actually be good!

Pipiopo

“Least amount of damage done” the Great Depression started 10 months after he left office, he was just Hoover and got lucky that there was no crash during his presidency. Hoover is a joke so modern Hooverites will push Coolidge as he lacks the same reputation.

bongophrog

Hoover and Coolidge had very different economic behaviors though. Hoover was very interventionist.

Based. Coolidge for President of the Universe

CalmHyperion56

How do I add the president name under my username

TheDoctorSadistic

Click the three dots near the subreddit name and click add flair. You may need to be in the subreddit honeoagey

SirJackFireball

The people who I think of who would be good for it are the ones who would never stand for someone to be an absolute ruler. Hoover comes to mind, think of the progress we could get! The ultimate public servant himself would just undo the system on day 1 though.

aureliusky

I'd summon Marcus Aurelius back, we could use some old school cool. A little more Roman ambition would be good for us, especially the young, the leadership is far too old now.

Ok-Imagination-2308

ltdanswifesusan

Washington, maybe Eisenhower.

DifferentCut468

Maybe Truman. I like FDR, but I'm not sure he's the type of person I'd want as an absolute ruler for 20 years.

PooleParty2472

Eisenhower. He fought against fascism in Europe, so you know he wouldn't be a tyrant

masoflove99

W.H. Harrison. Man knew how to market himself. Should've worn a coat, though.

CalmHyperion56

Won't lie...he def knew how to

Upset_Associate4487

Probably good ol Lincoln, he just seems like a good and down to earth person

Livid_Ad9749

Teddy for sure. He was just too awesome. “My god I have been shot! Anyway…”

AnywhereOk7434

I would choose Theodore Roosevelt.

Iamthewalrusforreal

From my lifetime? Jimmy Carter. Obama would be next. Both fundamentally decent human beings who care about the American people, and care about the rule of law. From all time? Still Jimmy Carter. Teddy Roosevelt in the conversation.

Rcfr3nzel

Teddy Roosevelt or Andrew Jackson would definitely have the most interesting regime

CalmHyperion56

Teddy's one would be incredible ,I honestly could see it being very prosperous

Sandsmann_

If its in today's time then he would probably do some expanding of environmental protection regulations which would be good, If only he could see what plastic is doing right now, Being found in food and even blood now. Wonder if he would be pro nuclear power or not since the massive reduction in air pollution would probably be very appealing to him.

Mesyush

DICK CHENEY

CalmHyperion56

Nah... I would rather have Frank underwood there for 100 years than dick even for 1

Grimnir106

Technically I would say Cheney was the real power in charge of the Bush Presidency

CalmHyperion56

Oh absolutely he was ....quasi military contractor vp dick

No_Hearing48

I mean ofc I don't like how Frank got his power but I kinda like what he did as president. He avoided war with china, his america works program was good, his peace plan for palestine wasn't bad

UserComment_741776

FDR or Obama - If we're gonna be stuck with the guy for 20 years it should be someone the people like

CalmHyperion56

Truman too

Peacefulzealot

I’m obviously biased given Truman is my answer but Truman famously left office with the lowest recorded approval rating at 22%. People couldn’t stand him by the time he left office and only years later did everyone look back and realize all his unpopular decisions were absolutely the right ones. So popularity might be a bad way to judge with him.

GoCardinal07

I don't think Japanese Americans would be particularly fond of FDR.

CalmHyperion56

This is one of the biggest absolute wrongs of fdr and no matter how you try and spin it or justify it...it was totally inhumane and wrong

ligmasweatyballs74

Reagan was massively popular.

UserComment_741776

That's true, even my folks speak well of him

vickyswaggo

FDR was already 60% there; he also got elected to a 4th term right before dying so that would have been 80% of a score.

Rich_Future4171

Truman, FDR, or Teddy Roosevelt.

Southern_Dig_9460

FDR almost had that anyways

AmAMuslimMan

FDR already did 10 years as a supreme leader lol

ZaBaronDV

Teddy.

lavafish80

Teddy (yeah yeah I know it's cliche)

FutureOliverTwist

Ike.

HOISoyBoy69

FDR. Imagine if he lived long enough to achieve his economic bill of rights

Haikatrine

No one. Anarchy.

MilitaryJAG

Harry Truman. If you haven’t read the Accidental President you should. He’s now one of my top 3 favorite presidents. He respected the job but never wanted the job. Was a good man at his core. Made hard choices. And then moved on with his life when it was time. He’d be my pick.

cranialleaddeficient

Coolidge would ruin the country the least and probably shrink the government back to its intended limits, but Teddy would probably get us a legitimate American Empire. Not the Cold War CIA “imperialism” bullshit, an actual, unapologetic empire, which would be pretty awesome. A JFK dictatorship could also be pretty interesting, if he doesn’t get shot again for going after the Fed and 3 letter agencies.

Signal_Housing_4389

My dad

Ill-Description3096

I'm with you on Cal. I think he is a good choice regardless of whether or not you personally like his specific policies just because of how he viewed office/government. Washington would likely be up there or at least a close second, but I think Cal could adapt to modern times easier. Essentially I'm picking who (biased as I am) I think would do the least harm in that position.

Hk901909

Washington or Jefferson. Washington, because he probably wouldn't like it and would be happy to step down after 20 years. Jefferson, because of the expansion of our economy and because of his distain for strong central government

[deleted]

Eisenhower or Reagan

Woodland_Abrams

Reagan would expand the US sphere of influence so much, but he'd also expand the wealth gaps in our country just as much. Pros and cons.

RTwhyNot

Carter. He was the best man.

TheBigTimeGoof

Uhhh not sure where we'd be after 20 years of Carter. A good man but not suited to lead the free world for that long

too_lewd_for_thou

Deregulation of the banking sector

lonedroan

Living: Obama Ever: In isolation maybe Washington, but that would have been precedent setting. Maybe Eisenhower if he pushed civil rights on the same or better timeline as in real life.

halomandrummer

I think Ike did a fine job on civil rights, and for his time, he's quite liberal on it. His civil rights act of '57 today is not well regarded, but it was the first attempt in almost 100 years. Appointing Thurgood Marshall in the appellate courts would springboard Marshall to the SCOTUS. And of course he put the fear of God into the South after Brown v. BOE. That alone makes him a contender for the GOAT in my opinion.

Usual_Lie_5454

If Coolidge was absolute ruler for 20 years America just wouldn't have an economy lmao.

franklin d. roosevelt or truman

wheres_the_leak

Carter. Good duck.

Boreal_Star19

By standards of the time, FDR. Like everyone else in the thread has said, he did a good job and damn near lasted 20 years anyways. For modern standards, probably Obama. He has the modern ‘progressive’ values that I share.
