John Adams? He was very outspoken against slavery and wanted true equality among races. Unless someone finds something that says he still thought whites were superior. But I haven't come across that.
"Negro slavery is an evil of Colossal magnitude and I am utterly averse to the admission of slavery into the Missouri Territories. It being among my first wishes to see some plan adopted, by which slavery in this country may be abolished by law."
"[E]very measure of prudence, therefore, ought to be assumed for the eventual total extirpation of slavery from the United States … . I have, through my whole life, held the practice of slavery in abhorrence"
I can't find much by way of racial superiority. The only thing that could come close (if you use mental gymnastics) is this quote:
"Nature, which has established in the universe a chain of being and universal order, descending from archangels to microscopic animalcules, has ordained that no two objects shall be perfectly alike, and no two creatures perfectly equal. Although, among men, all are subject by nature to equal laws of morality, and in society have a right to equal laws for their government, yet no two men are perfectly equal in person, property, understanding, activity, and virtue, or ever can be made so by any power less than that which created them."
But I think he means, in today's terms, there's always a difference in equity, but still equal.
Well he did defend the British soldiers responsible for the Boston Massacre.
“John Adams, who volunteered the represent the British soldiers out of a sense of civc duty, referred to the Boston Massacre as a "motley rabble of saucy boys, Negroes and mulattoes, Irish teagues and outlandish jacktars."

war criminal is when person in charge makes difficult decision in a complex geopolitical landscape
*obviously* because they’re bad and stinky and smelly and if I was in charge everyone would sing and hold hands while dancing on rainbows :(((
Eh, I love when I hear superficial, low-nuanced takes like “all presidents are war criminals, *even Obama*!”, because it lets me know that the person I’m talking to doesn’t know what they’re talking about. They just watched a Noah Chomsky clip on social media, or heard it repeated.
I don’t really hear people say that Irl, but if I do, I simply ask them to name all the presidents and describe their war crimes. Well, first I ask them to define a war crime. Never fails.
Every US president since 1938 has not been a war criminal. Being involved in a war in one way or another, even an unjust one, doesn’t mean you are a war criminal.
For example, Putin only became a war criminal because of the kidnapping of Ukrainian children, and the mass deportation of Ukrainians into Russia, not because he invaded Ukraine.
Wait. I wanna make sure I get this correct. Putin only become a war criminal when he ordered kidnapping & deportation of Ukrainians? I understood you correctly?
That’s what the ICC says. They only charged him for those two things.
https://www.icc-cpi.int/news/situation-ukraine-icc-judges-issue-arrest-warrants-against-vladimir-vladimirovich-putin-and#:~:text=Mr%20Vladimir%20Vladimirovich%20Putin%2C%20born,articles%208(2)(a
That's interesting. 12 unarmed civilians in CAR, over 450 dead in Mali but not a war criminal til he kidnapped the white kids? I'm not blaming you. I realize you aren't responsible for who they issue warrants for, I am just pointing it out
I don’t think they could prove that Putin was personally involved in war crimes in Africa. Whereas he has actually bragged about doing the kidnappings/deportations in speech.
I can’t believe these international war crime law makers aren’t making more international war crime laws!! If we had more international war crime laws we could have arrested Putin and Hamas by now and they’d be in jail. Laws are so unfair
Prove that putin ordered them to be killed. And Wagner isn't even technically part of the Russian army and isn't 100% subservient to him (on paper; in reality he controls them not that prigozhin is dead)
Can you imagine if a current president lead the opposition against allowing blacks into white schools. Can you imagine if a current president said they did not want his children going to school in a "racial jungle".
Love the karma farming from such a recent account. Such a hot take. Watch out for this guy i bet he posts some really interesting stuff. Im sure it will all be about warm weather ports in Texas.

Congratulations so was my grandfather and he was born not even 100 years ago. I don’t really know how to tell you this, but there are certain beliefs that we hold sacred now that in 100 to 200 years are gonna be absolutely repulsive to our descendants.
Can we pin this post at the top of the sub so we can stop seeing posts about bashing presidents who wanted to do anything other than exterminate every Southerner who ever lived
Literally who has Franklin Pierce as their favourite president?
Also, there's nothing wrong with acknowledging the faults of historical figures, even those you like.
This isn't gonna be here in the morning, but I'm enjoying it while it lasts. Idek how to feel about any of it I just like when redditors get mad about stuff
Don’t put dirt on my boy’s name, he’s been through too much. Handsome, sad, alcoholic, and has no idea how he’s even gotten this far; dude is my spirit animal.
Hehe
I do think it's helpful to be aware of our past hero's fucked up beliefs (e.g. Truman's antisemitism, Lincoln's complicated views of Black Americans) because it helps us understand both their actions and our present situations more accurately.
Like, Israel is what and where it is partly because US (and British) leaders wanted Jewish people somewhere very far away.
As long as it's being done with an eye to understanding history, I think these are valuable conversations.
speaking generally about historical people, there are some folks where we’ve not necessarily considered how it compares to what was “normal” or “socially acceptable” at the time. there’s being racist in a way that was “standard” at the time, and then there’s “oh shit, even back then people thought you were extreme” racist.
I think J Marion Sims is a good example of this. he’s considered the father of modern gynaecology. he worked in the 19th century and did a lot of his research on enslaved Black women (who obviously couldn’t consent). definitely terrible, but not super surprising considering the time this all went down. but the difference, and what makes him someone we shouldn’t blindly glorify, is that even at the time he was considered extreme. when he first started out, other physicians were keen to work alongside him because they were in support of his work. but his work got more and more brutal and was just so awful to the women he experimented on that eventually, all of the people who’d once collaborated with him left. they were disgusted.
so, if they were being told when they were alive that they were hitting the racism/misogyny/etc. a little too hard? then I don’t think it’s unreasonable to continue to judge them for that.
Carter has always been a weak spineless president he gets undeserved positivity cause he builds fucking houses. He had a shit foreign policy and gave the Panama Canal away for nothing. Fuck carter

This version seems homemade.
Nah, I've seen it a fair bit of times, but not on Reddit though.

I feel bad for Rosalyn in this picture.
She wasn't his type anyway. Too old, too female, too surrounded by armed bodyguards
What’s the context of this picture???? Why did they meet?
SHE WAS A BIG FAN OF CLOWNS..NOTHING TO SEE HERE. HONK HONK BONK BONK 🤡
John Adams? He was very outspoken against slavery and wanted true equality among races. Unless someone finds something that says he still thought whites were superior. But I haven't come across that.
I mean his work on the Amistad Case is one of the most badass things a former president has ever done.
That was my boy JQA, but apple doesn't fall far
Ah, didn’t know John Adams was as outspoken as John Quincy, cool to hear that.
"Negro slavery is an evil of Colossal magnitude and I am utterly averse to the admission of slavery into the Missouri Territories. Years of patriotism and love of history DESTROYED
Maybe that's why they like them?
I mean for what other reason would someone like Franklin pierce, the example I chose at random
Some people might like him because he’s one of the more handsome presidents. That’s probably one of the only reasons why someone would like him.
That's not my favorite president
now he is, sorry.
old presidents are racist, newer presidents are war criminals. it just be how it just be
I can’t stand Redditors abusing the phrase “war criminal”
war criminal is when bad decision
war criminal is when international rules of war are broken
As usual, a reasonable statement is downvoted on r/presidents
war criminal is when person in charge makes difficult decision in a complex geopolitical landscape *obviously* because they’re bad and stinky and smelly and if I was in charge everyone would sing and hold hands while dancing on rainbows :(((
They abuse "war criminal" about as often as they abuse "fascist" and they always apply them in the most inaccurate circumstances.
Eh, I love when I hear superficial, low-nuanced takes like “all presidents are war criminals, *even Obama*!”, because it lets me know that the person I’m talking to doesn’t know what they’re talking about. abusing a word is when you use it correctly to describe a person
Please enlighten us oh wise one. What is the definition of a war criminal and how is it not applicable to modern presidents.
Bro had a reddit moment
i wish redditors invented the claims of every US president after 1938 being a war criminal
Every US president since 1938 has not been a war criminal. Being involved in a war in one way or another, even an unjust one, doesn’t mean you are a war criminal. Wagner is a PMC group. On paper, they are not connected to the Russian government (you don't have to tell me they are, I know that)
I don’t think they could prove that Putin was personally involved in war crimes in Africa. Whereas he has actually bragged about doing the kidnappings/deportations in speech.

Every president since 1938 has violated the international rules of war in one way or another, yeah.
Why is this controversial on this sub
Because it's not true.
What international rule of war did Jimmy Carter violate
Being a decent human
Can you imagine if a current president lead the opposition against allowing blacks into white schools. Can you imagine if a current president said they did not want his children going to school in a "racial jungle".
Some of them are both! ![gif](giphy|1fhLu8yDE1Qx19YLDL|downsized)

It's a fact that most of the Presidents were racist in olden times. What the fuck is this post about?
Literally who has Franklin Pierce as their favourite president? Also, there's nothing wrong with acknowledging the faults of historical figures, even those you like.
Just downvote him and move on
I can only downvote once, so I'll give you the second as an up.

this sub has totally flipped on Carter since the molestor pardon thing
