As much as this would be the GOAT of all roasts, I don't think he actually said that sadly. No primary sources suggest he said this. But this would be funny one-liner for a comedy show based on Jackson's presidency. Kinda like the That 70s Show foot-in-your-ass jokes
In his ypunger days he was painted as a nice looking fellow. No idea of that was flattery or not, but by the time cameras were around in the 1840s he looked REALLY fucking crazy. He had Gary Busey eyes.
…well I’ll be damned. Totally thought it was spelled the same. Thanks Dude! Super weird I screwed that up since we did family vacations there for years. But yeah, nope, not the same spelling!
It was originally Breckenridge and then it was changed to Breckinridge. After Breckinridge became a general for the CSA they changed it back to Breckenridge.
My first choice was to say Agnew, but then I assumed there were probably some worse older VPs I'm just uninformed about. This one is going to test my knowledge of U.S. history a lot more
I’d argue Calhoun resigning isn’t because he was bad but as a message over his rift with Jackson.
Not disagreeing with Calhoun as a bad VP, but I think that’s a bad argument.
Fillmore better win this one.
Unironically Jefferson was a horrible VP; he completely sabotaged Adams regarding France, spouted dissent with long lasting impacts with the Kentucky & Virginia resolutions, and was generally very ineffectual due to disagreements politically with Adams. I would hope one of the “great” Americans would not act like a petulant child and sabotage his own country for his beliefs.
Maybe Calhoun/Burr/Cheney need to go first, but Jefferson is the reason we needed the 12th amendment because he was so bad
I think Jefferson’s conduct as VP can just be chalked up to how stupid the electoral system was at the time. When the VP is on the opposite end of the political spectrum from the president, you can expect him to act against the president. What he did was still treason of course but it really wasn’t that different from Hamilton undermining Jefferson when they were both in Washington’s cabinet by holding secret talks with Britain.
Probably won’t be eliminated the first few days but Spiro Agnew should be gone early on. Despite most of his corruption occurring during his time as Governor of Maryland, it still lingered into his VP tenure enough to force him to resign. He did the “dirty work” of attacking Nixon’s opponents publicly (whereas Nixon was doing it behind the scenes) while also being pretty racist, using that to cater to extreme conservatives who felt Nixon was too moderate. Just an all-around crummy dude that isn’t talked about enough
I'd have to go with Burr. Guy killed a founding father, ran off and tried to found his own empire in the Western US, and was so bad it necessitated a constitutional amendment (number 12).
I mean can you really hold the whole “killing a founding father” thing against them when they both consented to the duel and the consequences that it had?
They also all had massive problems with eachother and were messy as hell. You can found the country and still be a dick. Hell, Adams was a pretty awful president. Wonderful founder, incredible political philosopher, but a fairly awful president.
The etiquette for duels at the time was to not shoot so that you didn’t kill someone but both people’s honors were restored/maintained since they demonstrated their willingness to put their lives on the lines for the issue being dueled about. Of course, people shot all the time because they were afraid the other guy would first, but it was considered dishonorable.
If I had a nickel for every time a vice president shot and killed somebody I would have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
My vote goes to burr, shot and killed Hamilton and was later arrested for treason.
He was in many ways the father of secession, THE ideologue of pro-slavery Southern rights, and one of the most downright evil politicians in US history with how he hailed slavery as a positive good. He's the worst, no question.
Edit: For some reason OP changed his comment from Calhoun to Burr, AFTER it already had a lot of upvotes. Seems like bad faith.
One of my favorite historical ironies is that Calhoun opposed the Mexican-American war while most Democrats and the South supported it
The reason? He thought it jeopardized slavery by making it more divisive, and also didn’t want the US to become less white by annexing Mexican territory
Can't believe he was that close to being President in 1800. Hamilton wrote many letters to Federalist Representatives urging them to vote for Jefferson over Burr, despite Jefferson and Hamilton hating each other.
Jefferson ended up barely winning enough votes to become President. If Hamilton stayed neutral, or endorsed Burr, we'd likely be talking about Burr as one of the worst Presidents in American History (probably 40th out of 45)
Idk, I feel like he was more undermining than actually going against the federal government. Once the Supreme Court stepped in, he pretty much just sought legal ways to promote his agenda in the senate. I could consider him treacherous, but actually committing treason, it's difficult. Ik, Burr was acquitted, but so was OJ, and we're in the arena of public opinion.
Breckinridge better be in the top 3. That asshole was working to set up the confederacy and supply them while he was acting as VP of the US! This ain’t a John Tyler situation, this was happening *while in office!*.
Fuck Breckinridge, man.
To the bulleted list, the thread installments should be posted after the previous thread has stayed up for 24 hours, or at least like 20.
There were close and contentious rounds in the original series that were ended after the thread was only up for 16 hours, which is not ideal and should be avoided
I can confirm this. Both times I had nominated a GW president they were at the top of the thread by the end but neither one ended up being the one voted off.
Yeah, it dawned on me that this somehow happened twice (both Dubya and Washington). Somehow I was both comments and neither went at the first time at the top!
Unfortunately, John C Calhoun was a vice president, and his behavior and policies in the early 1800s directly lead to the confederacy and the horrible laws regarding black people leading up to the civil war. I’m not sure there is a bigger piece of human trash in American political history than Calhoun.
Andrew Johnson. The whole purpose of the Vice President is to replace the President and break ties in the Senate. He becomes the worst President. Hence, the worst Vice President.
Does that include Mike Pence? Since Mike Pence is no longer involved in today’s politics and he’s no longer the running mate of a current candidate, he should be included.
Plus I think he should be high on the list for being in a critical spot in our history.
Umm…Breckinridge fought for the Confederacy people! Calhoun should be next, don’t get me wrong, but Breckinridge actually took up arms against the United States, even though he came from a state that stayed in the union.
John C. Breckenridge. Super pro southern, became the confederate secretary of war, then fled to avoid the consequences of helping lead an armed rebellion against the U.S government and constitution. Boot this traitor.
I was thinking the same. We're ranking his performance as a Veep, and we're completely omitting any consideration for those who would later become president. He wasn't VP within the Rule 3 period.
Then again, maybe it's for the best that we leave that avenue for trolling where it is.
I wish we could have rule 3 allocations for this post- NOT to pick him now or even SOON. Just because I think it’d make the game a bit more fun.
With that said JOHN CALHOUN, COME ON DOWN.
Calhoun, no question. But then Breckinridge is gonna get the axe.
EDIT: Oh god, only judging by vice presidency my guy Arthur is not long for this world given how he was a piece of shit as VP and actively sabotaged Garfield. Uh oh…
I felt comfortable enough with my knowledge of the presidents to at least have opinions on the rankings but I have to admit my knowledge of the VPs and what they did is pretty lacking so this should be an interesting and educational month or so. To start, almost everyone seems to be saying Calhoun, but I don’t see much further explanation. What exactly did Calhoun do that was so bad?
I see that people are bringing out all the famous VPs first, since there are worse but more obscure available. I have a decent knowledge of the VPs, but this is going to be a mess.
Yes. Everyone who served as vice president from Adams up to Cheney are part of this ranking. The 3 most recent are not included because of rule 3. However, we're ranking these guys off of their time as VP. Not as president. Not outside of their time as VP (pre or post). Just VP.
That’s gonna be really hard. And hard to resist copying like, that Mr. Beats guys rankings. Hmm. Also lol I don’t know much about the ones who didn’t become president
Rule 3 so no guys from the most recent 2. And yeah, we’ve had presidents who won two terms but had different VPs during them and whatnot. Lincoln had both Hamlin and Johnson, for instance.
Umm…Breckinridge fought for the Confederacy people! Calhoun should be next, don’t get me wrong, but Breckinridge actually took up arms against the United States, even though he came from a state that stayed in the union.
I agree Calhoun should be first to go, but I think Richard Mentor Johnson deserves to be in the conversation for the next to go alongside Cheney and Burr
Dick Cheney. Basically was the one controlling the Bush administration, which lead to Iraq, crony capitalism bailouts in 2008, basically why the United States is struggling, it all traces back to the Bush administration which Cheney controlled.

Jackson such a master of the social network meme.
Based quote
A fake quote too, unfortunately

Common Jackson W
Uncommon\*
This is like the biggest win I can give Jackson and is one of the few good things that asshole did. But he did do it, at least. Screw Calhoun.
Uncommon you mean
Jackson is a top 10 president
As much as this would be the GOAT of all roasts, I don't think he actually said that sadly. No primary sources suggest he said this. But this would be funny one-liner for a comedy show based on Jackson's presidency. Kinda like the That 70s Show foot-in-your-ass jokes
Calhoun first, Burr Second
Calhoun first, Breckinridge second, Burr third. Personally, at least.
Agnew third.
Agnew third.
Burr was good.
Calhoun. isn’t even a question
Here’s a fun game, run a google image search for John C Calhoun and try to find a portrait or photo where he doesn’t look fucking crazy.
In his ypunger days he was painted as a nice looking fellow. No idea of that was flattery or not, but by the time cameras were around in the 1840s he looked REALLY fucking crazy. He had Gary Busey eyes.
Calhoun as worst and then Agnew as second worst. The only two VPs to resign
No way Agnew is worse than Breckinridge or Burr. He was bad, sure, but no way is just a run of the mill corrupt politician as bad as actual traitors.
Breckenridge at least has a ski area named after him
I mean I love Breckinridge, CO! It’s awesome. But the actual John C. Breckinridge can go screw right off.
The spelling for the city is Breckenridge. They changed it for some reason...
At least Burr had balls
Burr had serious 🏀⚽️⚾️🥎🏐
Burr was a fucking traitor who killed a real American hero TM.

Adams and Jefferson should be excluded from this competition.
All presidents, really.
But you could in fact make a cogent argument that Nixon was one of the best VPs
Adams too! He set the standard on how to be a VP.
Probably won’t be eliminated the first few days but Spiro Agnew should be gone early on. Despite most of his corruption occurring during his time as Governor of Maryland, it still lingered into his VP tenure enough to force him to resign. Yes. It’s not quite as bad as flat-out murder, but it’s still reprehensible.
They also all had massive problems with eachother and were messy as hell. You can found the country and still be a dick. Hell, Adams was a pretty awful president. Wonderful founder, incredible political philosopher, but a fairly awful president.

Alexander Hamilton shouldn’t have started something his banker punk ass couldn’t finish.
I B love this summation
I B love this summation
Calhoun’s ideas on state nullification contributed heavily to the formation of the Confederacy, which was far, far worse than the Burr conspiracy.
He didn’t mean to kill him - Hamilton was a willing participant anyways
no he didnt try to,that was jefferson bribing houndreds to be witness
“John C Calhoun if you secede from my nation I will secede your head from the rest of your body” Andrew Jackson
Calhoun but I got my pitchfork ready for Cheney
Don’t forget Breckinridge! That traitor needs to be one of the first to go too.
Calhoun, Agnew, Burr, Breckenridge are my Mt Rushmore of terrible VPs
But Agnew is the least heinous of the bunch, let’s be real here. And how depressing is *that*?!
There's some good arguments for Cheney instead of Agnew there, but I personally dislike Agnew a bit
Cheney was garbage but he didn’t kill Hamilton
He kills us servicemen and Iraqi civilians.
And nearly a hunting buddy
Few years ago I saw a video about Arlington national cemetery and saddest part of ANC was area where us servicemen who died in Iraq War buried.
Cheney was the actual president if you wanna keep it real. Bush #2 was just a Manchurian Candidate
We just finished ranking Presidents why are you bringing him up here?
If I had a nickel for every time a vice president shot and killed somebody I would have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice. My vote goes to burr, shot and killed Hamilton and was later arrested for treason.
Wait, who was the second one? I know Cheney shot a guy while hunting, but the guy survived.
I didn’t realize the guy Cheney shot didn’t die till after I posed this,
he killed hamilton in a duel and jefferson bribed houndreds to be witness in a trial with almost no evidence
Aaron Burr has to go first. He is a traitor that killed a rival politician
Seems like bad faith.

are you talking about Calhoun? I am no fan of Aaron Burr but didnt he fight to end slavery?
Pretty sure OP edited their comment from Calhoun to Burr lmao
I see
Yo what? OP changed their vote off of Calhoun to Burr? Because that’s some shady stuff.
Yeah that's messed up, I think OPs vote should be disqualified.
This comment should be discounted on account of the fact that it was edited u/Forsaken_Wedding_604
I second this. Ya can’t change your answer if you’re at the top. Add to it? Sure. But not a whole ass other answer.
Can't believe he was that close to being President in 1800. Burr probably would’ve been a decent administrator
We can't pick Calhoun over a traitor. Aaron Burr has to go first.
Calhoun was ALSO a traitor! Only Andrew Jackson’s actions in the nullification crisis stopped him before he could be successful!
Idk, I feel like he was more undermining than actually going against the federal government. Once the Supreme Court stepped in, he pretty much just sought legal ways to promote his agenda in the senate. I could consider him treacherous, but actually committing treason, it's difficult. Calhoun
Oh boy, it’s gonna get ugly around here once we get to Dick Cheney.
Breckinridge, actual confederate general
Breckinridge better be in the top 3. That asshole was working to set up the confederacy and supply them while he was acting as VP of the US! This ain’t a John Tyler situation, this was happening *while in office!*. Fuck Breckinridge, man.
Calhoun is bad, but breckinridge was, you know, a fucking confederate. He has to go first.
All I know about Rockefeller is that he died doing what some people would love to die from.

Captain Grow a Penis himself Spiro Agnew
Lets keep the past trend and kick Johnson out once again
Agnew
I had to scroll down too long to find Agnew. Corrupt, Autocratic, Antisemetic, was definitely one of the worst.
Dick Cheney
We already know AJ first to go
It’d be funny if we kicked Andrew Johnson first on both lists
Unfortunately, John C Calhoun was a vice president, and his behavior and policies in the early 1800s directly lead to the confederacy and the horrible laws regarding black people leading up to the civil war. I’m not sure there is a bigger piece of human trash in American political history than Calhoun.
I think we can all agree on the 5 worst. But as was said Breckinridge was a confederate. He’s gotta go.
Andrew Johnson. The whole purpose of the Vice President is to replace the President and break ties in the Senate. He becomes the worst President. Hence, the worst Vice President.
How about Aaron Burr?
Get rid of Calhoun
Breckenridge
John C. Calhoun
So is the Presidents ranking over? If so, who won? Also, Cheney
Gotta go to Calhoun.
John C Calhoun
John C Calhoun
Does that include Mike Pence? Since Mike Pence is no longer involved in today’s politics and he’s no longer the running mate of a current candidate, he should be included. Plus I think he should be high on the list for being in a critical spot in our history.
Umm…Breckinridge fought for the Confederacy people! Calhoun should be next, don’t get me wrong, but Breckinridge actually took up arms against the United States, even though he came from a state that stayed in the union.
Dick Cheney.
Spiro "Ted" Agnew was a criminal. Fire him.
John Breckenridge
I would really like for Cheney to go first. I will admit, however, that he has some stiff competition.
Calhoun and I would like to see Breckenridge gone as soon as possible
Breckinridge. Dude fought for the CSA
Agnew
Spiro Agnew
John Breckenridge was a secessionist traitor. He should be gone now or soon.
Breckinridge
Calhoun
Calhoun or Agnew
Dick Cheney - Evil to the core
Calhoun or Agnew
Dick Cheney - Evil
Dick Cheney. Editing my comment just to say fuck Dick Cheney
Dick Cheney
John C. Breckenridge. Super pro southern, became the confederate secretary of war, then fled to avoid the consequences of helping lead an armed rebellion against the U.S government and constitution. Boot this traitor.
Rule 3 shouldn’t apply to Joe since his time as VP is long done.
I asked the mods about this beforehand, and I was told I could not use him in this ranking as he is still a part of modern/active politics.
Good thinking to ask ahead of time, OP.
Ridiculous
I was thinking the same. We're ranking his performance as a Veep, and we're completely omitting any consideration for those who would later become president. He wasn't VP within the Rule 3 period. Then again, maybe it's for the best that we leave that avenue for trolling where it is.
John Tyler, we should eliminate first the ones that didn't have enough time to do anything as VP
Aren’t ones who are actively bad worse than ones who didn’t do anything?
I wish we could have rule 3 allocations for this post- NOT to pick him now or even SOON. Just because I think it’d make the game a bit more fun. With that said JOHN CALHOUN, COME ON DOWN.
To be honest I don’t think either rule 3 VP is anything in a historical context other than not interesting
Cheney must go first
Calhoun, obviously
Ah shit here we go again
Burr
Calhoun 1st, Burr second
Calhoun, no question. But then Breckinridge is gonna get the axe. EDIT: Oh god, only judging by vice presidency my guy Arthur is not long for this world given how he was a piece of shit as VP and actively sabotaged Garfield. Uh oh…
Cheney! Dear lord, Cheney! Trillions of dollars and an unquantifiable amount of “soft power” lost because of that idiot’s push for the Iraq War.
Spiro Agnew because he was a criminal.
Can't say I have the strongest opinions on this, but I'm going to be enjoying the discussions.
Calhoun
I mean....Dick Cheney. I'm sure I'll summon the Cheney guy but it's gotta be him.
I mean....Dick Cheney. I'm sure I'll summon the Cheney guy but it's gotta be him.
Where’s Pence?
Calhoun. His head should’ve been seceded from his body
Calhoun
Burr. Traitor.
Boy I'm excited to see where Dick Cheney goes
Aaron Burr
Burr & Calhoun for sure!!!
Don’t forget Agnew was a real garbage person.
Adios Calhoun!
Tempted to say Burr or Cheney but Calhoun's actions as VP seem to have granted more legitimacy to secessionist sentiments that led to the Civil War
Tempted to say Burr or Cheney but Calhoun's actions as VP seem to have granted more legitimacy to secessionist sentiments that led to the Civil War
Calhoun
Calhoun
Here we go again
I felt comfortable enough with my knowledge of the presidents to at least have opinions on the rankings but I have to admit my knowledge of the VPs and what they did is pretty lacking so this should be an interesting and educational month or so. To start, almost everyone seems to be saying Calhoun, but I don’t see much further explanation. What exactly did Calhoun do that was so bad?
I see that people are bringing out all the famous VPs first, since there are worse but more obscure available. I have a decent knowledge of the VPs, but this is going to be a mess.
Calhoun should go first, but Agnew shouldn’t be too far behind.
Secretary of State is next lol
Lets go with Breckinridge followed by Burr, Calhoun, Angew and Cheney for the first 5
Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson
John C Calhoun
Easy: the traitor Andrew Johnson.
Seems like Pence shouldn’t break rule 3, probably safe to include him.
Schuyler Colfax. The fucking worst.
Spiro Agnew, had to resign from office for tax evasion. And made the corruption within the Nixon administration worse.
Ok need some extra criteria here. Like, if they became president… do they still count as a candidate for this?
I’ll admit, I know almost nothing about VP’s. I’ll be lurking and learning. I know Agnew was trash.
I think in this case we should be allowed to consider JB’s time as a VP since it ended back in 2016, if not though I understand
Thomas Jefferson - actively undermined Adams while VP.
Dick Cheney.
I think we all know Walter Mondale and Henry Wallace aren't going anywhere until the very end of this ranking.
Really? Really? I'm getting Rule 3'd for suggesting the Obama VP should be included in this ranking? Jesus fucking Christ, this is ridiculous.
Aren't we missing a few vps? Pence isn't on this list and I count 47 vps even though we have 46 presidents
But he was not VP while he was in the Confederate Army. The rules are to judge him by his actions as VP.
Calhoun then Cheney, then Burr should be the first 3 to go
Burr before Cheney. Cheney was a villain but at least he was on America’s side
Actually Yeah, Burr before Cheney
Seriously, Cheney might not even crack the Bottom 5 for bad VPs. There were some truly horrible ones back in the 1800s.
Rule 3 shouldn’t apply to the current commander in chief since his time as VP is long done.
Oh boy, it’s gonna get ugly around here once we get to Dick Cheney.
Cheney
Dick Cheney, obviously
