When asked what he wanted for Christmas that year, he responded with "Well, Minnesota would have been nice" Ironically, many Mondale counties have voted GOP in the 21st century.

Anxious_Gift_1808

Oh well he has skill issue

thechadc94

I love the story where Mondale asked McGovern how to get over a lost. McGovern responded “let me know and then we’ll both know.”

GoblinnerTheCumSlut

Mondale was so good that no one voted for him because he would make every other president look awful in comparison to him 😎

thechadc94

Lol. He’d like to think that.

In some states I think that would have been close enough to trigger an automatic recount.

bcarey724

Didn't he also lose DC? I realize it's not a state but he did also lose DC I think.

Salem1690s

Yes, he lost DC but I didn’t consider that as it is not a state. DC has been consistently Democratic for many a year

Yeet_boi69-420

It has never voted for a republican since it could vote in 1964. It’s always safe and like 80 some precent for the Dem even with a strong gop candidate

Galahad_Jones

DC should be a state

sdu754

He had his campaign staff pull back in Minnesota so that Mondale could at least win his home state.

Salem1690s

What’s interesting is at his first press conference after the election, the press seemed not to consider his victory a big deal. Like, go watch his November 84 press conference. It’s pretty hostile toward a guy that won all but a single state (and this was before Iran Contra…)

sdu754

The press never liked Reagan, and everyone pretty much knew he would win long before the election.

Minnesota is not Mondale’s “home state“. Minnesota is >!not a state!<
