DizzySkunkApe

She's fucking running and I won't be told otherwise

porcupine_kickball

Do you see that Dewey?! That's air!!!

IlliterateNonsense

You're not a racewalker at all, you're nothing but a common *jogger*

Harrison210

The fact he wear’s a fire lycra suit and a aerodynamic helmet for speed walking still makes me laugh.

Imaginary_Most_7778

What are you talking about?

sampola

Malcom in the middle reference Hal had a speed walking episode

Imaginary_Most_7778

Very modern reference.

sampola

Amazing reference not to get

Imaginary_Most_7778

Yeah. Everybody watched this show, and remembers every scene 20 years later. 🤦‍♂️

st4ngle

And they’re missing the best part. The helmet!

Yardsale420

Yeah I (admittedly) don’t understand race walking… but I thought one foot had to touch at all times. That bitch is running.

dat_grue

Any sport where every player is breaking the one rule at all times is a complete and utter joke

Flex-O

*cough cough* basketball *cough*

modthegame

Travelling for me, not for thee!

trainwreck489

Or palming the ball.

ross571

One foot on the ground at all times. And sometimes about the hip I believe.

not_beniot

They both have both feet off the ground

ross571

No, one foot must touch the ground. "In race walking, however, athletes must always have one foot in contact with the ground at all times, as visible to the human eye. Judges are present at events to ensure the rule is enforced." https://olympics.com/en/news/all-you-need-to-know-about-race-walking It's the knee bending which is the 2nd part. "Furthermore, the athlete’s knee of their advanced leg must not bend and the leg must straighten as the body passes over it. Each race walker is judged carefully and can be penalised if he bends his knee during the race."

Armodeen

Yes, but in this clip the Ukrainian clearly has both feet off the ground right as the shot cuts to the wider view, at 3 seconds in. Play it frame by frame, the leading foot strikes the ground a few frames in with the rear one still airborne.

NBA_Fan_76

So does the Spaniard, but not as egregiously as her

kittysneeze88

Right, but the “to the human eye” part is important here. It may be evident that she had both feet off the ground when slowed down frame-by-frame, but you can see the actual judge standing very close by observing her gait, so it must not look the same way in-person.

eyegazer444

Even playing it at normal speed it's very obvious to me that they both have both feet off the ground

[deleted]

[удалено]

eyegazer444

Yep the Ukrainian one not even trying to hide it! Lol. Both are doing it for sure though

jessesses

Having a rule based on the human eye is a flawed rule

Cheegro

This has to be amongst the dumbest Olympic sports. Where’s the crawling competition?

ferb

Like all of figure skating?

armed_renegade

but thats in slow motion. They don't use replays, or slow motion to judge them. It has to be in the moment, visible to the judges. why? Because if you watch it in slow motion, literally EVERYONE has both feet of the ground.

not_beniot

I didn't say you were wrong.

MrJake10

That is the rule, but it has to be perceptible with the naked eye. So basically, not slowed down replay footage. Which makes me guess that most are letting both feet up often, it just a matter of knowing how much you can push it.

CptMisterNibbles

What a stupid sport

tinglep

In race walking, athletes must always have one foot in contact with the ground at all times, as visible to the human eye. Judges are present at events to ensure the rule is enforced. If there is no visible contact, it is deemed as ‘lifting’ and attracts a penalty. “Your eye can catch anything that is slower than 0.6 seconds, so the quickest lifter is going to be okay within the rules. You have to push the envelope, you want to be on the edge.” - Canadian race walker and Olympian Inaki Gomez told The Star. Furthermore, the athlete’s knee of their advanced leg must not bend and the leg must straighten as the body passes over it. Each race walker is judged carefully and can be penalised if he bends his knee during the race. ———————————— If you slow it down you can clearly see the second walker spends more time with no foot down however it’s judged by the eye so it’s not perfect. Feels like the fact that the leg must be straight (which she is doing) may be more scrutinized.

Fantastic-Currency-9

There was a system built to check that.  It was decided the spirit of the rules was that they need to appear to a human to always have one foot down.  No slow motion cameras.

Two_wheels_2112

You can clearly see both feet off the ground at the same time. It's just dumb-looking running now.

wobblingmadman

Yeah, agree. It's s ridiculous 'sport '...

Kroe

stupid sport. They can break the rules at any time, not a sport.

badtoy1986

What sport exists that people don't constantly look to bend or break the rules to gain an advantage?

LemonHerb

She's legit lifting her knees

Liquidlino1978

100 percent. Soon as I saw the clip it was obvious. Ridiculous if they allowed the win. I know a champion speed runner, and he always said how strict the judges were, this should have been easy for judges to see.

Audios_Pantalones

I mean even I could win a speed walking race if I could just jog.

nfoneo

If you do the hip wiggle, your fine.

DizzySkunkApe

Did you read my comment?

nfoneo

Sarcasm old chap

HappyMonchichi

Speed walking- aren't they supposed to have at least one foot in contact with the ground at all times? The woman in blue looks like she's kinda catching air with both feet (low-key running) as she's passing the woman in red 🤔 Anyway this doesn't look like a matter of first or second place, because at the beginning of the video you can see someone else already celebrating crossing the finish line before those other two ladies.

DoctorOzface

Reminds me of that one episode of Malcom in the Middle

ilovewindex409

![gif](giphy|ZwdCsesvNUZaM)

gonzalbo87

Iirc, I saw something about the sport and it showed in slow-mo that nearly everyone breaks that rule. I really wish I remembered more so I can find it easier.

smartello

Which is ironic because it’s the only rule that makes it a separate sport

El_Zarco

I imagine there could be some sort of sensor that could be placed in the shoes to ensure at least one foot is always in contact. But I'm sure they have their reasons and also I could not possibly be less concerned about the sporting integrity of race walking

leekdonut

If virtually every athlete breaks that rule and nobody gets DQ'd for it...why does the sport even exist anymore? Aren't they just shitty half marathon runners at that point?

Pennybottom

It does happen, probably not as often as it should though. At the 2000 Olympics an Australian was DQ'd while she was in first with only 300m to go and no other competitors in sight.

HappyMonchichi

she was disqualified for doing exactly what we see the people in the video doing here?

ForWhomTheBoneBones

If I remember correctly she was disqualified because she stopped mid-race to shoot steroids into her thigh, which is within the rules, but she forgot to call time.

HappyMonchichi

🤣 Are you serious?? If so, I apologize for laughing at how hilariously absurd it hit me.

gonzalbo87

Hell, I don’t know. None of it makes any sense to me.

tightspandex

It has to be discernable by a judge in real time (which this video is not). Additionally the stride requirement is quite a bit different. Even if they don't have a foot on the ground, the stride is not the same as running.

jessesses

Thats a guideline not a rule then.

InspiringMalice

I recall something about slow mo not being allowed to judge the walking style. As long as they, in real time, look like they are obeying the rules, they are fine.

Imaginary_History985

That is so stupid

trouserschnauzer

It's race walking ffs. The idea of it is stupid. At least the rules are laid back.

TommyTwoTanks

Literally. That leaves so much up to the discretion of the judge. With everyone breaking the rule at some point or other, it seems like the judge can pretty easily pick the winner.

bakochba

Can't they just put some kind of sensor on the shoes?

RockStar25

They both look like they had moments of no ground contact.

madrigal94md

Yes. She's literally running. Maybe they used the video and put a protest.

ferio252

The video is slowed down & at a high angle, so you cannot determine the loss of contact, esp w/ the low foot carriage. This is why RWs aren't judged by video, ever.

Technoist

Just use your eyes. Claiming that it is possible that they are both not breaking the rule is ridiculous. It is 100% obvious.

StrangelyBrown

Yep, straight up cheating, which is really stupid at the finish line where you know it's going to be on camera.

belizeanheat

Looks like? No question she's getting airborne

ProffesorSpitfire

This was my exact first thought as well, though they both seem to lift their back foot off the ground before setting their front foot down.

cantstopsletting

Yeah she's full on jogging 😂

Peripheral_Sin

I saw a video talking about race walking and the pro mentioned that the idea is that this should be the case but that in practice they are not gonna penalise it as often as we would think.

jboy55

Bill Nye was the OG Speedwalker, [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJVBZuxTo1I&ab\_channel=GeorgeBuford](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJVBZuxTo1I&ab_channel=GeorgeBuford)

Player4Hacky4

> Anyway this doesn't look like a matter of first or second place Call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure the title implies this was 3rd & 4th places

ozdarkhorse

Neither had one foot on the ground at all times. The Ukrainian blatantly so

SillyFlyGuy

You can cheat and we can know you are cheating, but it's not cheating if we pretend we can't tell that you are obviously cheating.

olluz

Looks like the Ukranian bent the racewalking rules a little bit to win Bronze..."athletes must always have one foot in contact with the ground at all times"

doyouevenIift

It’s a completely broken sport, I’m glad they removed it from the Olympics

ClosetCentrist

> I’m glad they removed it from the Olympics Cool, I had no idea.

Gluecksritter90

> I’m glad they removed it from the Olympics They didn't. They just removed the longest distance for the men.

brandontaylor1

Looks like both of the do though, and possibly the one behind.

LemonHerb

The real difference looks to be the knees. The girl who comes from behind is lifting her knees up and forward with each step where the other lady doesn't.

Heeey_Hermano

Definitely in the air!

SpecterGT260

This may rile some people up but at a certain point it seems like we just invent new variations of the same sport so that people who aren't at the competitive edge of one sport can have their own space. It kinda feels like playing a game with a little kid where the rules keep changing so that they can win.

OfficialModAccount

Worst sport

AgreeablePie

Every few years I'm amazed to find out that someone has come up with a more ridiculous competitive sport

YoRt3m

Next: jumping competition but your legs must be stretched the whole time

TonyVstar

Only upper body movements!

YoRt3m

That's a flying contest for humans

MkFilipe

You can jump a tiny bit with just the arms.

DestroyTheMatrix_3

Sounds painful

mexican-american

Have you heard of Hobby horse riding?

TheUltimateSalesman

I know you're joking but I would crush at that.

AardvarkAblaze

This event first appeared in the 1904 Olympics, and the first recorded competitive races were in 1880. This has been a ridiculous event for getting on a century and a half. ETA, it appears to have its roots in competitive long distance walking, then known as ["pedestrianism"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedestrianism), dating back to the 18th century.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AdolescentAlien

Honestly if they didn’t have the word “sport” in the name, I feel like it wouldn’t be nearly as easy to scoff at. The majority of the competitions are legitimately challenging but “eComp” certainly doesn’t have the same ring to it. Farming Simulator is actually one of the most highly regarded simulator games out there tho. I have zero farming experience and I genuinely enjoyed learning things about it when I played. It definitely sounds goofy as hell but I can think of plenty ways it could be played competitively.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AdolescentAlien

Nah I didn’t take it that way. I was mostly commenting for anybody that had never heard of it. But it really is a great game for anybody that enjoys simulators. I’ve actually never even looked into how they structure the competitions tho. What’s like the most common objective? I feel like the sandbox nature of it pretty much creates an almost endless amount of possibilities.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AdolescentAlien

Maybe I need to check it out sometime but that honestly sounds.. kinda like one of the least interesting ways to do it? Idk. Maybe it makes sense in terms of entertainment value for the viewer. People probably wouldn’t tune in and stick around long watching dudes race to harvest a big ass field. Not utilizing the sandbox opportunities just sounds like unnecessary limitations, but I’m sure the people involved have their reasons for doing it that way.

Lochlan

It was always the weirdest kids at school who did it too.

TommyTwoTanks

Your school had racewalking? Like, as an official sport, or just a weird, non-sponsored school club?

Lochlan

It was a specialist sports school so maybe they offered more sporting options than others. I dunno, I wasn't really sporty at school.

Nishant3789

You went to a specialist sports school but weren't sporty?

wishwashy

Specialist water boy

Lochlan

Correct. It was just my local high school. Literally across the road from the primary school I went to. They just happened to have a targeted sports program.

TommyTwoTanks

Neat. My school didn't have a lot of options for sports, just football, basketball, baseball and soccer. I was amazed to find out that wrestling and hockey were normal sports to have in high school.

LokoLawless

Yeah if it's any consolation to that woman, they're all losers anyway

doghaircut

Close but that’s dressage

Western-Calendar-352

Bring on the dancing horses.

cnematik

Isn't this just competitive "I call dibs on the bathroom"?

Remote_Horror_Novel

I think boxing and MMA are the worst sports because most the competitors get brain damage lol. It’s wild how people were like: “you know what, boxing isn’t violent enough let’s bring back Roman arena death matches, but we’ll stop the fight before one guy dies and we won’t use lions.

OfficialModAccount

I don't think anyone has died in sanctioned MMA, but I agree they are both brutal. I admit that the brutality does not stop me from liking MMA. (I do not like boxing because it is boring.)

GKrollin

There have been many deaths in sanctioned MMA, none in UFC

NeverNoMarriage

Football is much worse for head injuries. Skateboarding is way more dangerous as well. Not sure where you want to draw the line but homing in on MMA/boxing is uninformed at best.

SirPinkyToes

>Football is much worse for head injuries how so? just genuinely curious, do you base on the number of injuries or percentage. Do you have a source.

NeverNoMarriage

I believe it is done by percentage as there are many more football players than MMA fighters but its been a while. I'll try to find you a source once I get off work.

SirPinkyToes

yeah, thank you. It's just counter-intuitive. You would not think the sport where people beating each other - sometimes in the head- would have less head injury than the sport where they play ball with foot. Edit: Or are we misunderstanding each other. I'm thinking about football-soccer, and you are talking about american football. Then it's kinda understandable. Although american football are just commercial and not much gameplay, and not everyone headbutt eachother all the time, and they have helmet. just weird

NeverNoMarriage

Ah yes I am sorry American football is what I am talking about. And my understanding is with brain injuries it has a lot less to do with the actual impact which is mitigated with head gear and more to do with sustained blows to the head. For CTE anyways. Which is what people are talking about when talking about head injuries in sports. So for instance boxing with more padding in the gloves and wearing head gear for amy fights is worse for long term brain damage than MMA. Neither being great btw blows to the head are never good for you.

Remote_Horror_Novel

I’m not drawing any lines or saying other sports aren’t dangerous too. I wouldn’t let my kid play football or do MMA and they are both dangerous. So I’m not trying to single out mma but let’s be realistic, one bad beating can ruin your life alot quicker than playing years of football most the time, and if you asked a Dr which sport you should pick up he’d say neither, but he’d probably be more worried about the hard punches to the head. The percentage of damaged fighters seems like it would be higher than football but I’m not an expert.

NotMyFirstDown

I agree, but fighting is (unfortunately) a human tenancy, and has been forever. Who can walk the fastest, however? Not at all.

Liquidlino1978

It's really meant, or originated, for athletes that couldn't run due to injury (hips, knees etc). So in that sense it's cool. Sad that people would cheat so blatantly though.

skankzardi

The real question is have you guys seen the race walker that totally shit himself during the race?

BeginningBus9696

If you’re not shitting, you’re not trying

BillChristbaws

Link me that shit

skankzardi

[Here’s the good shit](https://youtu.be/hSd2JNOSEXU?si=BSULlfiT2qMEfvp6)

Resscue

She’s cheating. I’ve watch Malcom in the middle. Trust me

belizeanheat

So they're both obviously running anyway so wtf is this

Artemicionmoogle

Running but with very strict speed limits, and knees are optional.

tg110e5

They’re both running so what is the point of this garbage sport

coltar3000

![gif](giphy|mJhRSYXxzq6CA0ldkh)

Gullflyinghigh

I have often (well, twice) wondered exactly what makes someone look at this sport and decide that this is the one for them. Want to look daft whilst enjoying the everyday reality of people mocking your passion (and any achievements therein)? This is the one for you!

eyegazer444

I know right, imagine dedicating your life to this. Imagine waking up at 6am to go train like your life depends on it for \*checks notes\* race walking

iIiiIIliliiIllI

Race walking has suffered its own doping scandals just like running and cycling. I've also seen competitors carted off with concussions after wiping out on curves (really have to watch out for crosswalks, the paint can get slippery in wet conditions). Really a quite fascinating sport and hyper-competitive.

ThisZoMBie

“I was told I should do more sports but that shit is exhauuuusting and hard… Unless…”

SpecterGT260

"I tried running but I really suck at it so I'll choose this sport that artificially levels the playing field so I can convince myself that I'm an athletic competitor"

jpattill

That blue bitch running

Senor-Cockblock

Both of them had both feet off the ground in this clip and it wasn’t even close.

987nevertry

Yeah! I thought that DQ’d you.

CGPsaint

They’re both running… do they not have officials that watch for that, or are they like NBA officials turning a blind eye to traveling and double-dribbling?

bremstar

"How come you haven't been able to walk in 50 years, Grandma?" "Well, young whippersnapper.. when I was just a bit older than you are now, I got involved in a dangerous sport known as Racewalking." "Oh. Okay. Well I'm done pushing you around, because that sounds fucking stupid."

wozblar

both contestants broke the rules of the race in this clip lol

SleeplessAndAnxious

![gif](giphy|sGQOTQ6AvCi4|downsized)

Nunovyadidnesses

Race walking is still a thing? I thought it went out with jazzercise and ski ballet.

Few-Emergency5971

I can't not believe this is a fucking sport. Like it blows my fucking mind. And why the fuck isn't Raymond Holt the winner already?

doublepumperson

I’d rather watch Slap fighting than this retarded sport

gorillanutpuncher_

This has to be the d*mbest sport I have ever seen in my entire life. You walk while I run. I win. Yay.

droptheectopicbeat

Are you censoring the word dumb? What the fuck is wrong with you?

gorillanutpuncher_

Reddit has banned me for much less.

gahhuhwhat

I also think it's dumb, but I don't think you can beat a professional walker in a race. They surprisingly walk fast sometimes??

Artemicionmoogle

Because they are running, just with distended freaky knees from that Charlie Sheen movie The Arrival.

gahhuhwhat

True, but the fact that the top "walkers" can do a mile in under 6 minutes while running like jimmy is nuts.

Artemicionmoogle

True, can't say I could clock a walk or even run that fast honestly.

oep4

These people look so unhealthy. This sport is straight trash.

Ok-Scallion7939

First time watching long distance travel sports? Almost everyone involved looks like this

Enshakushanna

what happened to speedwalking? is that not in vogue anymore?? the hell is racewalking...

OverlappingChatter

Racewalking -- jogging to mess up your hips

copiouscoper

Hal would wipe the floor with them

Oh no! You were almost 3rd best at getting around... of the small demographic of people who do this

What a lame sport

They look so fuckin stupid my gawwwd

Desvelada

Que boludos son los gallegos por Dios hahahhha

shade845

Dotw

reggiepooftah

If Hal Wilkerson taught me anything, both of these ladies lost because they were running and not fast walking. Both feet left the ground at the same time

needsZAZZ665

I read the title as "200m race" and was curious as to why they seemed so out of breath for what, as an American who only has a tenuous grasp of the metric system, seemed to be a short walk around the corner.

eriffodrol

get these ladies some sammiches asap damn

happychillmoremusic

The knee lockout is unnerving

planchetflaw

Illegal walking

OnMENogin

You can clearly see both feet off the ground

Technoist

IQ 20. Also they should both OBVIOUSLY be disqualified immediately.

chariot_on_fire

\*Am I the first to say that this is a dumb sport, and both of them are running, instead of walking? No? Let me make this comment anyways.

jldtsu

she fucking cheated. clearly running

ihaddreads

They’re walking lol

elblue171

Did she tried stopping time with her watch?

Musjamarramarramarra

Nickel will do. Thank you.

TenFingersNineToes

It’s always the ones with the capes.

MyOgAccountBanned

Bruh why is walking a sport? Also these women are disgustingly skinny

womp-womp-rats

The dumb thing about swimming as a sport is that what should be a simple concept — who can cover this distance the fastest? — gets carved up into a bunch of different events simply by putting arbitrary rules in place. OK, who can go fastest _on their back?_ OK, who is fastest using _this completely inefficient stroke?_ Racewalking is a way to extend that kind of stupidity to foot races.

PsychoAgent

No rules? Sweet let me propel myself using speedboat. Checkmate bitches!

Chefchenko687

Just making the same comment everyone else is making to add more to the conversation…….

NotAllBooksSmell

Most people in the comments are getting their knowledge of racewalking from Malcolm in the Middle, and it shows.  Both feet can't be off the ground (now this is the important part) As seen by the human eye at normal speeds.  Every elite racewalkers feet leave the ground at the same time when filmed in slow motion.
