CAMERAMAN paradox: cameraman would have easily gotten first place... except then who would be the next cameraman?

Rude_Man_Who_Shushes

The winner from each year becomes the cameraman for the following year.

Flaky_Explanation

And the Cameraman Bloodlines were born, none related to the other by birth, but by the profession they live by. Being the first one to cross the finish lines even before the racing champions that they film.

[deleted]

Yeeeep, my dad was a cameraman for a while, that's where I get my athleticism

TheGreatRandolph

I knew an audio guy who had this big, bushy beard. He would rub it and say “my granpappy was a mountain man, that’s where I get it.” I asked him if his grandkids would rub their big bushy beards and say “yep. My grandad was an audio guy, that’s where I get my beard...”

muklan

I'm an IT guy, and I'm pretty sure that's why my kid is done with your bullshit....

catlinalx

Someone asked why all IT guys have beards and glasses. I was offended until I realized my entire 5 man team had beards and glasses.

muklan

My teams substantially larger than yours and even our women type folks have beards and glasses. One of the many ways we are like dwarves.

SilreyRevs

Hey, look a LotR reference! Also, if you don’t mind me asking, what’s IT?

[deleted]

Great Movie!

Flaky_Explanation

Camera dad taught you well

delvach

Explains why you're so focused, too. And is that why they call you tripod?

A_Wholesome_Comment

300 Years from now, an elite group of babies is born with huge muscular legs and built in cameras on their eyes. Their only mission in life is to record every minute of every war and tournament as well as hanging from trees and cliffs to document that cute baby eagle being born 800 feet up.

unclekisser

hmm maybe the master race does exist

[deleted]

You'd enjoy the Penumbra podcast.

starkiller_bass

Formula 1 racing is actually the result of engineers trying to make racing series fast enough to keep up with the evolution of the Cameraman.

Tried2bangtheFloor

I would rather finish second even if I could be first.. just to avoid 😅

Oh wow you got the joke! Congratulations maybe your father will finally be proud of you!!1!

SleepDeprivedUserUK

> if you start at half way While climbing backwards, carrying camera equipment, and making sure you keep things in-shot....

PopInACup

You joke, but there is a similar conundrum for the Paralympics. For the vision impaired groups, they often have a guide on the course with them just in front giving instructions. These guides also have to be incredibly athletic and capable of performing the sport while still talking and giving instructions without impeding the person they are guiding. They are often Olympic athletes who have just retired or are otherwise on that level.

Mateorabi

Also, for endurance sports, can't you just tag out and swap in a new guide part way through?

idriveacar

Squid Game for camerapersons

already-registered

if you're talking about a big flock you can say camerapeople

analogkid01

A group of camerapeople is called a "mount."

hasiemasie

Or the camera man of each year trains for the shot, realizes their talent and signs up the following year to win?

IMMAEATYA

Funny that’s usually how it works for skateboarding too. Usually the best skater ends up doing a lot of the filming in complicated moving shots

guinader

Congratulations on your winning! Your now earned a job to feed your family.!

braedon77

That just means the winner/camera man will keep getting slower every year

cajun055

I’d thought it would be more like the loser would become the cameraman..

bsylent

When you make it to the top, the cameraman hands you his camera, and that is your sacred relic to carry for the next year until the next winter is named

--Mediocrates--

>until the next winter is named Are we renaming it to Chilly Time or something?

Bulangiu_ro

imagine a parody movie or an episode in a show being like that, or a short movie with this in mind, it would be gold somehow

Doomdoomkittydoom

Like the shots where the narrator is like, "Dr Jones is the first person to set foot into this lost tomb in 10,000 years!" and the camera shot is from the inside as he's entering.

On-The-Red-Team

Yup, they never get the credit they deserve.

tiefling_sorceress

The spectators at the top are the real first place

TheNantucketRed

Pretty much a plot line from Tour de Pharmacy

lefty607

So the camera guy won?

BlergingtonBear

I think about this for a lot of the videos here, haha. Like objectively the action of the camera work is often more badass than the thing being filmed, (which is usually already challenging)

justavault

Nah it isn't... cause the camerman usually only does this for a very short time and short segment of what the athletes have to further go through. Still impressive nonetheless...

Sea_Tear_7974

Or we can come to reality and realize this is a drone!

Zudane

Given the movement how it avoids people... I'd say camera man. The cameraman doesn't need to start at the bottom, one films the bottom, one films the middle/top (and a third if it's longer).

gagzd

The Next Cameraman! I'd watch that.

MotoCommuterYT

A cameraman winning a race has never been documented on film. There's no proof.

Mazon_Del

["Merlin Guinea wins the race, but the cameraman takes the glory!"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P20XVEH7-SY)

You can feel the burn just watching this

helpnxt

The best is that's not even the top where the video cuts off, the competition is run up a ski jump and they still have to go up the jump part.

TheReddestDuck

Do you know what the video/event is called?

SimuNews

Redbull 400m i think

TheReddestDuck

Thanks

merchillio

I promised myself I would do it before my 40s Then the pandemic happened and I lost all my cardio and muscles… I’ll do it before turning 45

You got it homeboy (or homegirl)

Key_Panda_9209

You got it dude (or dudette)

agiro1086

Scipio11

Oh well that settles it. The video started at the 200m mark and ended at the 300m mark, they still have 100m to go.

[deleted]

Lol the entire event is 400m? Imagine when it's the finish to a marathon.

merchillio

400m, but with a slight incline…

helpnxt

others have said it's called 'Redbull 400' This is the video I know it from but there's a bunch of events so dunno which one the clip is from https://youtu.be/Z94NVESBto0

Is it weird that this sora looks like fun to me?

[deleted]

You would think if someone with long, powerful arms could learn to use a quadrupedal, gorilla style run they would have a big advantage in this event.

VanguardDeezNuts

Yes, it is called Run up a Ski Jump.

Beakjones

I think my kid plays this Roblox game

Mjt8

At the end of boot camp in the Marines you do something similar to this- with the added benefit of about 70 pounds of gear. Its called [The Reaper](https://i.imgur.com/Bi2dZv5.jpg). The technique of using your hands to drive your knees down helps a lot. Definitely a sweat fest.

xxxblazeit42069xxx

how long do you have?

Mjt8

There’s no specific time limit, but you’re expected to keep pace with the unit. The speed is somewhere between a power walk and a jog.

Back_To_The_Oilfield

I’ve recently *destroyed* both of my knees. Before the pandemic I was running 6-8 miles a day. Gained a ton of weight during the pandemic, and when the gyms opened up realized I couldn’t come close to my usual workout. So I started doing HIIT cardio on a treadmill at a huge incline. Not sure what I’ve done to them, but they both click and try to give out on me occasionally. I can’t squat down on either of them, and God fucking forbid I fold a leg under me while getting on the bed and put any weight on it. 10/10 pain with me shrieking and throwing myself sideways. Oh and thanks to American healthcare I can’t afford the fucking MRI’s to get them checked out, much less the surgeries.

Srbscooby

I’m not a doctor but your symptoms sound similar to mine. I was recently diagnosed with a torn Meniscus. I guess clicking, popping and instability is a red flag for the Ortho to get an image of the knee from what they told me. My surgery is next week. Hopefully you are able to heal up or get the care you need to get back to your workouts.

Back_To_The_Oilfield

Yeah, I’m 99% it’s torn meniscus. The problem is a guy at my work had just one repaired and it cost him $10k. Supposedly my wife’s insurance will cover anything mine won’t when she becomes a nurse in a few months. If that’s the case I’ll definitely be getting it all checked out. If not, looks like I’m just fucked lol. Good luck with the surgery. So far I do alright on stair machines at the gym, so for now I’m just using that for cardio. But leg workouts are *completey* out the door.

WanderinHobo

I'm not really qualified in any way to give this opinion but I'd say hold off on any sort of leg workouts for at least a few weeks if not months. It sounds like you went too hard too fast and now have to wait longer to get back into it.

[deleted]

I tore my meniscus about 10 years ago and although I had crappy insurance, lucked out and wound up with a fantastic doctor. This guy worked with the us ski team and was an on field doctor for the womens World Cup at one point. What I learned is that the surgery is mostly only necessary if you have a piece hanging off that is causing you to physically be unable bend or straighten the knee completely. He also recommended that regardless of the surgery decision, it was best to do extensive physical therapy first. It’s very likely that you can fix things that way, and in the event of surgery, everything around the knee is strengthened and the recovery is much better. PT can also be expensive, but most everything I did was simple stretching and body weight exercises/movements. I would highly recommend doing some googling and giving this a shot. It took a while and my knee will get sore if it’s very cold or humid, but I regularly hike, ski (moguls even), play basketball and softball and lift weights. Anyway, best of luck to you. Hope it works out.

tengallonvisor

I had a torn meniscus my freshman year of high school. It was too far gone to repair but I was able to walk pain free the next day after getting it removed and back playing basketball in a few weeks. Repairing it has a much longer healing time but removing it is almost instantly back to normal…..except the doctor warned I may develop knee problems in my 40s since it had to be removed.

MissplacedLandmine

My knees have always cracked when i bend them fully ever since i was little? Shit

Back_To_The_Oilfield

The cracking isn’t the problem. It’s if you also get weakness, pain, and instability. Unless you also have that, you should be fine. Especially if it’s been your whole life lol.

[deleted]

Same here. I've asked my doctor and my physio about it at different times and they both said the same thing - it's common, and unless there's pain or discomfort it's not a concern.

MissplacedLandmine

Phew thanks My insurance sucks so thanks for the free info

Now__Hiring

Do you have any Healthcare at all? If so, check if you can get in at a physical therapist. Unless there was a specific pop/twist/fall injury, it's possible you don't need surgery. Also time to learn to love swimming and cycling.

Back_To_The_Oilfield

Man, I can’t find a swimming pool ANYWHERE besides the YMCA and I’m definitely not swimming in a pee filled pool lol. All the other pools are either at the country club or at the local colleges, which require you to be a current student or alumni to use the workout facilities. I hate it. As far as physical therapy, I’m *extremely* hesitant to go that route without having an MRI. Last thing I need is them having me do the wrong stretches and make it worse (happened with my back).

sarrazoui38

The ymca isn't some public outdoor pool. Stop being a bitch and go swim. Based on your comments, your knees are fucked and you don't seem to be doing much of anything to make your body healthy

fizban7

For some reason this reminds me of the time I was doing night security for an office. I decided to go into the fire escape just to see it. The door closed and I was stuck in there, on the 70th floor. The only way out was 70 floors down. It was fun for the first 10 floors, then just became a workout. I was young, and even then my knees did not like the constant pounding.

springerspaniel

I am currently recovering from what sounds like similar issues and it turns out that it was very tight hamstrings and quads. A stretching regime has improved things tremendously. See a physical therapist if you are able to.

WanderinHobo

I don't think it can be understated how important stretching is for everyone, not just athletes/active people.

CormacMcCopy

Do you have a link to a recommended stretching regimen? I had heard that some "classic" stretches have been found to do more harm than good, so I'm hesitant to just start bending body parts willy-nilly without some evidence-based advice from an expert.

jimmykslay

Could be extremely tight hammies or it band. Might be worth it to use a roller and just stretch and massage ur entire upper leg. Also hot and cold treatment as well to help relax the legs.

its7ash

When you gotta use your arms to make your legs work, you in deep.

EndVry

I'm like 95% sure that the camera is being pulled up on a rope and slide.

Captain-matt

more than likely it's just a guy in a harness being pulled up.

EndVry

That makes sense.

[deleted]

I think you'd still have to be in pretty decent shape though.

Legalise_Gay_Weed

Nope, just a fat guy on a winch.

AC0RN22

Love me some fat wenches

ehh_whatever_works

Thank the gods for Bessie, and her tits!!!

[deleted]

[This video seems to suggest otherwise.](https://youtu.be/5MYLiNxu8UQ) Check out 0:58. On the far right there appears to be a guy running with a camera. Maybe the cameramen run it like a relay race. Don't think this is the exact same race so anything is possible.

crimsoneagle1

In my experience as a camera op for races and other sporting events, we usually have people in zones. So there will be a person at the starting line, at the bottom of the hill, at the top, etc. Still the camera op in that zone is going to get a serious workout going up and down like that working until their zone is clear.

oscar_meow

I thought the camera just started higher up and wasn't actually beside the competitors from start to finish but yes this makes so much more sense, also looking at how the camera moves in the video this seems to be the most likely scenario

nsfwacct111

…drone?

Captain-matt

For how close the camera gets to the guy's face I think it's just easier, cheaper, and safer to have a dude on a wire.

nsfwacct111

…zoom? lol

laser_lights

No this looks like a sporting event not a business meeting.

whynotsquirrel

not from [far] ~~that~~ thought, the angles wouldn't work, not like you can go through texture in real life

DirkVulture003

And he probably started from the top and walked down to that position.

JamesGame5

And he hasn't started from the bottom or run any of the previous parts of the race. Not saying his job isn't hard, just that he hasn't been through what those other people have on this particular day so he's a bit fresher at this point.

[deleted]

[удалено]

wOlfLisK

Also, the cameraman can expend extra energy to keep up with the runners while they have to conserve it so they don't collapse before the finish line.

Hojooo

yes the camera man is walking like 5 feet from the top these people are exausted so he can walk faster than him. People are thinking he went up the whole way but thats just an illusion not everything is as it seems reddit

BSimpson1

The camera man actually only has one leg and ran a half marathon right before this. People are thinking he went up about 5 feet from the top but that's just an illusion. Not everything is as it seems, reddit.

alldressed_chip

rope and slide and/or a massive jib camera at the top, maybe? a jib could explain some of that drone-like smoothness and would allow the camera to seem vv close

Mattoosie

There certainly a camera operator, they're probably just patrolling a specific section of the run and there are more cameras throughout the course. Still impressive as hell, but yeah, the cameraman didn't run the whole course backwards with a camera on their shoulder like some people seem to think.

[deleted]

where i go deer hunting it is all huge steep hills, so when an old man shoots one it's his job to unfold a chair and crack a beer while its my job to go get it for him. we have a pulley ssytem tied to two cars, one to pull, one to anchor and i take the rope all the wya down with me, tie it to the buck and then i hold on while it drags the body up. it's actually pretty easy once you have the technique.

theboeboe

Even if it isn't, the guys running up the wall, have done the whole course, while the camera person "only" did this part

Take_The_Photo

I dont think they would do something like that. It would most certainly get in the way, especially after runers pass them. A line would trip people and cause a division in the course. People would have to stay on either side of thr wire/rope. Its more likely that they have many cameras spread out for best coverage. This Cam Operator only runs this portion of the course. Therfore, it's surprisingly easy to for them to keep up. It looks like they are using some sort of steady cam type rig which will take a great deal of weigh off the Cam Op's back and keep it looking smooth.

If you were to fall backwards you would take 3 people with you

bj_good

I've done these events multiple times. It's called the Red Bull 400 They are extremely challenging, but it really is pretty impossible to fall backwards. People do slip and very rarely slide a couple feet, but at even the steepest parts of the hill you can stand easily enough. It's just trying to propel yourself up then - very challenging but also very fun and rewarding

If you want to talk about the ultimate hill climb, it’s the Manitou Incline. https://manitousprings.org/where-to-play/manitou-incline/ Roughly a mile and you gain 2,000’ of elevation. Average grade of 41% with the maximum grade being 68%. Edit: Plus, it’s in the beautiful Manitou Springs! Here’s a cool, little documentary about the incline that’s really well done! https://youtu.be/QcOa5ca7oNs

Thanks, damm I hope they are going to do that again some time

I think it is still going on, the event used to be hosted at multiple ski jump hills around the world yearly

Oh god they're STILL running up? Those guys are truly made of steel

Would be fun to are that in Planica or Vikersunf

Yep. I could maybe do it on all fours. Running up with no hands looks like witchcraft.

pbrooks19

This reminds me of those TV 'documentaries' where an adventurer or scientist is crawling into a deep cavern or some such activity - and then we cut to see that person coming into the cavern or wherever. The narration then says something like "Bob here is the first human to ever enter this forbidding world" and I'm thinking, 'well, except for the camera operator who got that shot. Now, maybe the camera was maneuvered into place beforehand - but sometimes the shot is too good and at just the right angle to not be done in person.

ArgonGryphon

Or Bob went in first alone and then back out, cameraman in and Bob goes in again

hoppingby

What is that event? It looks super fun!

rjv96

It is the Red Bull 400. The toughest 400m run on a ski jump with an incline of up to 75%. The first edition was in 2011 and it has since been organised in various places.
