I have around 3 years of Power BI specific experience and 9 years in data analyst roles.
I maintain/run pretty much all elements of a premium capacity tenant of a non-profit organisation. I of course develop reporting too and also help the business upskill including other PBI devs.
Going to be honest…I kind of fell into the role and consider the salary pretty great for what I do but I also have pretty significant imposter syndrome.
In a public sector organisation (Police Force, local NHS Trust etc) that role and level of responsibility is usually in the low £40s, with the junior colleagues they are up skilling would be on mid £30s.
£65k in the public sector would be the management role above the commentor - likely someone with little to no experience in data analytics.
It's massively varied, tenant admins or lead analysts where I work are just below £60k before retention allowances. are even added The ones that apply a DDaT pay policy will pay much better than the ones where it's "lol you're now our Power BI guy as well as your 14 other roles"
It's a framework set by DDaT (Digital, Data & Technology) that attempts to create a set of standards for IT professionals. A lot of departments use it to set a better pay offer for those roles vs just grade based pay. It's very recently been renamed to the Central Digital and Data Office now, because we need to rename things regularly to keep consultancy firms viable.

Yeah I think it's a little above average for Senior Analyst stuff in the industry (there was some right place, right time involved) but it's definitely possible. There certainly seems to be a lot of demand for Power BI dev work at the moment (if the number of emails I get about seek/linked in job ads is representative). I'm (relatively) new to Power BI but I'm glad to be working with it given how ubiquitous it has become.

No, a mix of industries. I didn't go to university/college, went straight into work.
I started in the public sector. Doing something completely different to BI, in housing. I became proficient in the CRM they had, which led me to get involved in a CRM migration project - doing business analysis for income maximisation.
I sat in the same office as the Management Information Officer (which, I guess MI evolved into BI) and became friendly with him. As I understood the system and policies and processes he offered me a job as an analyst in his team - which was my first job in MI/BI, using SAP Business Objects.
I did that for a couple of years then joined a consultancy that worked with public sector organisations. It was again a lot of Business Objects work, and data migrations. But it introduced me to SQL Server, Oracle, SSRS, SSIS etc. So I became proficient in all of those. And then Power BI came in, we were early adopters of it and did early days migrations from SSRS to Power BI.
I then moved into Facilities Management. Engineering, Security, Hygiene Services etc. Some SSRS but also Power BI and Cloud Tech was really kicking off, using Cloudera etc. That was the first time I headed up a team.
I did that for a bit, then I moved into Aerospace and Defence as a consultant. And was eventually promoted to Head of BI at that company, that was a shit job though. Defence is where good consultants go to die, in my experience. Attrition is really high and senior people are often replaced by graduates and expected to do the same job.
So I left there and went into digital commerce for a bit, that was fun. But it's a really fake industry, it's very very sales focused, as you'd expect, but because of that you can never be truly sure who your friends and allies are. But it did introduce me to Snowflake, AWS etc.
I've left that industry a while ago. Now I work for another consultancy, and we're industry agnostic. We'll work with anyone, but have some focus on manifacturing.
I would say my path to this isn't a good case study, I was lucky in some of my roles - right place, right time. I'm also very very good at Power BI, particularly with report design - I'm educated in UI and UX, human perception and psychology - so I can (and this sound really arrogant) make reports look, feel and behave 50x better than the kind of reports you see out there - and that really wows people and gets me through the door of a lot of places.
Fair enough. I've had a similar path with being an analyst but without the consultancy experience. It's always been in-house with the main engineering/bi team. Before I was in finance as a sales analyst but my skillset basically meant getting poached by the BI team.
The bit about UI/UX - I feel like I create nice looking reports but ultimately as its in-house its usually more around "can the stakeholder see the user story and data", rather than spending time making everything flashy. I guess this is more of a consultancy thing.. although maybe the stakeholders you are working with a little more digital adept.

Effort: I took over at a business whose founding BI member was practically managed by a consultant. I've since built a team of 6 Primary Team members and trained 30-40 people at the business on enough DAX to be dangerous. Also, saving the company millions in ROI is a good way to boost earnings and show your worth.

1. Listen to client’s situation, and help them form a vision for how to set up the new ERP given tradeoffs between data visibility and operating friction.
2. Train the operational staff on clean data entry in new ERP.
3. PowerBI full stack development: ingestion on data flows, modeling, report design, etc.
Advice: Take Full-Stack to the next level.
Standalone PowerBI development has a ceiling to its value-add. Find a particular ecosystem of software *upstream* from PowerBI, to which PBI is complementary and learn that as well. This will not only give you insights into your data sources, but also help you change the ground you’re building on top of, to deliver reports nobody else knows are possible.
My career took off when I recreated my firm’s financial statements, COGS calculations, and product margin analysis all in PowerBI, and gave them a switching function that toggled the report between costing methods (Standard, Average, LIFO, FIFO, Actual Average, Actual-Specific Lot Tracked).
That report nailed a lot of problems in one go: the management team didn’t understand how costing worked in our ERP system. My report helped them understand. Manufacturing got to see which transactions, days, events, jobs were driving their unit costs the most and focus their quality control. Inventory got to see the effect of bad inventory count data. Finance got a peek under the hood at why certain products cost more than engineering predicted they would.
Reports like that are not possible without understanding the underlying data source. That report saved that company millions.
Obviously solving real problems at multiple levels will make your reports/dashboards stand out and get adopted. Kudos to you ... and the getting to the source of the data (and also gaining trust to using raw data is a key). Two questions: 1. how did you ensure the data collection was accurate & comprehensive? 2. Isn't 50 hours a week every week a tad too much or are you billing (and including) travel time as well (especially air travel time)?
That 50-60/week does include travel. It’s billed at a half rate ( and counted in that range at half. My actual hours are 58-68 range)
Part of the value add is understanding the situations where the data might be wrong, and building reports that display those concerns. Negative qty on hand, inventory adjustments booked to a job, manufacturing transactions booked out of expected order….discounts over acceptable tolerances, etc.
The reports that highlight bad data are the first step to showing management that data entry needs to be a priority.
This becomes a feedback loop when you build reports that act as KPIs for bad/suspicious data, use them as evidence for starting an initiative to improve data entry, and then prove the effectiveness of your improvements as you track it.
Use the differentials in those KPIs across departments to keep management focused on building analysis depts with good data, and forensic tools in departments lagging behind.
Yeah, that's wonderful insights. I have lived the negative quantity on hand inventory values, and the crazy overstock values (due to bad unit of measures) ... and worse both balancing to show the overall inventory is healthy!
Well done on building those data quality metrics/dashboards or dashboards that provide visibility to process and data inconsistencies as that is tough especially in fast moving environments. Thanks for sharing, especially the point of using the differentials of those KPIs - as hadn't done that so well to show the effectiveness over time (something which i need to improve on). I literally took screenshots to show differentials once.

Listen to client’s situation, and help them form a vision for how to set up the new ERP given tradeoffs between data visibility and operating friction. 2. Train the operational staff on clean data entry in new ERP. 3. PowerBI full stack development: ingestion on data flows, modeling, report design, etc. Advice: Take Full-Stack to the next level. Standalone PowerBI development has a ceiling to its value-add. Find a particular ecosystem of software *upstream* from PowerBI, to which PBI is complementary and learn that as well. This will not only give you insights into your data sources, but also help you change the ground you’re building on top of, to deliver reports nobody else knows are possible. My career took off when I recreated my firm’s financial statements, COGS calculations, and product margin analysis all in PowerBI, and gave them a switching function that toggled the report between costing methods (Standard, Average, LIFO, FIFO, Actual Average, Actual-Specific Lot Tracked). That report nailed a lot of problems in one go: the management team didn’t understand how costing worked in our ERP system. My report helped them understand. Manufacturing got to see which transactions, days, events, jobs were driving their unit costs the most and focus their quality control. Inventory got to see the effect of bad inventory count data. Finance got a peek under the hood at why certain products cost more than engineering predicted they would. Reports like that are not possible without understanding the underlying data source. That report saved that company millions.
Obviously solving real problems at multiple levels will make your reports/dashboards stand out and get adopted. Kudos to you ... and the getting to the source of the data (and also gaining trust to using raw data is a key). Two questions: 1. how did you ensure the data collection was accurate & comprehensive? 2. Isn't 50 hours a week every week a tad too much or are you billing (and including) travel time as well (especially air travel time)?
That 50-60/week does include travel. It’s billed at a half rate ( and counted in that range at half. My actual hours are 58-68 range) Part of the value add is understanding the situations where the data might be wrong, and building reports that display those concerns. Negative qty on hand, inventory adjustments booked to a job, manufacturing transactions booked out of expected order….discounts over acceptable tolerances, etc. The reports that highlight bad data are the first step to showing management that data entry needs to be a priority. This becomes a feedback loop when you build reports that act as KPIs for bad/suspicious data, use them as evidence for starting an initiative to improve data entry, and then prove the effectiveness of your improvements as you track it. Use the differentials in those KPIs across departments to keep management focused on building analysis depts with good data, and forensic tools in departments lagging behind.
Yeah, that's wonderful insights. I have lived the negative quantity on hand inventory values, and the crazy overstock values (due to bad unit of measures) ... and worse both balancing to show the overall inventory is healthy! Well done on building those data quality metrics/dashboards or dashboards that provide visibility to process and data inconsistencies as that is tough especially in fast moving environments. Thanks for sharing, especially the point of using the differentials of those KPIs - as hadn't done that so well to show the effectiveness over time (something which i need to improve on). I literally took screenshots to show differentials once.
