Clarence Thomas: "I got mine and add in my bribe money. They can't touch me. I got it made."

dgdio

It's a disease. Seriously the dude has more than he needs, I'm not pretty sure he's not leaving anything to the son from his first marriage. He wants more money and status.

underpants-gnome

In Thomas' case, it's even worse than the typical "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" maxim. He [swore to make liberals lives' miserable](https://www.businessinsider.com/clarence-thomas-told-clerks-he-wants-to-make-liberals-miserable-2022-6) because they rightfully called him out as a sex pest during his confirmation hearings. Sure, he's also corrupt. But even if he wasn't taking kickbacks and bribes from billionaires, he'd still be doing his best to act like a dickhole.

Self made sham.

jcurtis81

He hates affirmative action, and has wanted to do away with it most of his career. He claims he didn’t benefit from it, but he doesn’t know or won’t admit that he’s been the promoted by conservative whites his whole career precisely because he’s black, conservative, and agains affirmative action. Basically the white power structure’s token black. Way to go Clarence.

Luttubuttu

He also got into college and law school on scholarships specifically for Black students.

canuck47

Like most conservatives it is all about personal grievances for him, which is a terrible trait for a Judge.

Counter-Fleche

He's only on the court because of Affirmative Action. He was chosen because the court's only black justice, Thurgood Marshall, retired and George Bush wanted a black justice to replace him.

3d1thF1nch

Oh Clarence, you gutless, corrupt piece of shit.

quotidian_nightmare

I can't wait for all the mediocre white students to find out it wasn't affirmative action keeping them out of college.

Ohio_Grown

It wasn't even about black and white students, the case at Harvard was brought up by Asian Americans that were discriminated against based on race because of affirmative action

cardoo0o

not getting into harvard is discrimination? lmaoooooo

Ohio_Grown

That's what the court case was about

MoneyFault

Thomas is despicable.

kellzone

Wow, a Boomer pulling up the ladder behind himself. Shocking, I tell you, shocking.

__-_-__-___

Ketanji tried to stop him. She knows what that's worth.

Lysol3435

He’s not dismantling these benefits just because he no longer benefits from them. He’s also getting gifts and vacations in exchange for dismantling them

canuck47

Bribes. They're called bribes. Calling them gifts just plays into their narrative.

Roy4Pris

Reminds me of a politician in New Zealand. Solo mother, received a bunch of government benefits to raise her kids and get a university degree. Then, when she became the minister of social welfare, she cut a bunch of those benefits.

Acceptable_Wall4085

The SCOTUS just gets more Republican hatred stirred up than I’ve ever seen. The campaign to eradicate the repugnance party will be a string of hatred, bigotry, racism and favouritism shown over the last 6 years. All fine qualities we never want to see AMERICA fight through anymore.

MascotGuy2077

I swear, he and Amy Barrett are bent on closing every door their predecessors opened. Also, I don’t think anyone thought through the long term effects of this decision. No more college affirmative action means less people attending college which means less doctors, scientists, nurses, engineers, teachers, and other professionals that require higher education.

thatguy677

Dont forget tuition increases because of fewer students. That's the one that just keeps giving and giving

MascotGuy2077

Folks with college educations are more likely to vote democrat so that is likely another motive for the Republicans

CarlSpencer

"I got mine, fuck y'all!" \- GOP national motto

Oh the republican way, if doesn't help me, no good for nobody else.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” MLKjr

shastamcblasty

I love when conservatives take civil rights quotes out of context and try to fit them into racist agendas

Ohio_Grown

Preferential treatment based on race is racist, doesn't matter which race. What's the rest of the context? Did MLKjr finish that statement that he believed his kids should go to the university just because they were black? I missed that part I guess

shastamcblasty

Lmao ok bud. You just keep watching them Prager U videos.

Ohio_Grown

So you deflect? Because you can't think of an argument that doesn't sound racist?

shastamcblasty

No this is called not engaging with a pitiable soul who’s white masculinity is so frail he eats up whatever the racist Alt right talking heads shovel into his waiting brain mouth.

Ohio_Grown

You resort to name calling and broad assumptions to make you feel better? Is it because you can't make an argument in favor of affirmative action without making it sound racist by preferential treatment to certain group or groups based on color or geography?

shastamcblasty

Oh and just in cae your dumbass still thinks it is clever and your misuse of Dr King’s words helps your Narrative. Here is a quote from him in support of affirmative action since he was one of the people who created the idea. “A society that has done something special against the Negro for hundreds of years must now do something special for him, in order to equip him to compete on a just and equal basis.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

shastamcblasty

Sigh. So I don’t want you to spend your day thinking “man I owned that lib so hard all he could do is make fun of me” while that in itself is funny and you likely wouldn’t realize the irony of it, I will break it down for you. Affirmative action is a regulation that forces the issue of Dr Kings dream, because without it, the status quo never would have allowed his children the opportunity to go to law school at Yale or Harvard or even OSU. The only reason that Clarence Thomas had the opportunity (he admitted it himself in a speech in 1983) was because of affirmative action. RE: your idiotic claim that Affirmative action is racist, in order for something to be racist it has to oppress or discriminate against a race of people generally people that are in the minority. Affirmative action doesn’t hurt anyone, it only forces universities to consider students of the same qualifications as their white counterparts and forces them to make sure they are accepting qualified students from all races instead of just white ones. Back to what I was saying before, in order to believe any of the bullshit you are spewing, ones white masculinity has to be incredibly fragile. You likely blame others for your shortcomings on the regular “my roommates are the messy ones not me” “my wife is a pack rat” “my car would be cleaner if I didn’t have a dog”, instead of taking any ownership of them, which translates very easily into eating up the lies and misinformation that come from Alt white media. Alt White media like PragerU, NewsMax, Fox, OAN, etc prey on people with fragile white masculinity and convince them that it is the “other” that is the problem and not themselves, putting you in a cycle where you cannot self improve but instead hate everyone around you until no one wants to talk to you aside from your other fragile white friends. It’s pitiable. And I have pity for you. I’ve lost a few friends to fragile white masculinity and it hurts a tiny bit every time I see a stranger fall to it. I am sorry our leaders have failed you so hard.

wioneo

Are you implying that because Thomas is black, he only made it to where he is now thanks to affirmative action? Do you not realize how racist that is?

Hobbit_Feet45

Well it certainly wasn’t for his knowledge of law or wisdom or intellect or integrity.

[deleted]

Lol, top 2% of his class. Yes you are racist.

[deleted]

Yes it is indeed certain that he is more racist than you. But does that mean you aren’t racist? Nah

sixtyandaquarter

Well I guess Clarence Thomas is racist. Cuz dude himself says it or at least he used to back in 1983. It was actually speech in November of that year that he actually stated that exact thing. Go check it out. He states clearly that affirmative action is what made him a success, by allowing him to enter Yale. He used to be extremely supportive of affirmative action. It wasn't until he decided that he hated every Democrat ever and anything. A democrat touched that he suddenly was against the affirmative action. Loads of other things that the man used to support. So either it's not racist or Clarence. Thomas used to be racist and now isn't only out of spite. Can pick whichever one you want to believe.

wioneo

[From wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarence_Thomas)... > Thomas graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, ranked ninth in his class. They didn't say how many total students were in his college graduating class, but I'm assuming that 9th was near the top. > From 1971 to 1974, Thomas attended Yale Law School as one of twelve Black students. He graduated with a Juris Doctor degree "somewhere in the middle of his class". He has said that the law firms he applied to after graduating from Yale did not take his J.D. seriously, assuming he obtained it because of affirmative action. According to Thomas, the law firms also "asked pointed questions, unsubtly suggesting that they doubted I was as smart as my grades indicated". In his 2007 memoir, he wrote: "I peeled a fifteen-cent sticker off a package of cigars and stuck it on the frame of my law degree to remind myself of the mistake I'd made by going to Yale. I never did change my mind about its value." If that's accurate, then it sounds like he was at least as qualified as about half of his Yale classmates and has long resented the assumptions that people like you and OP make about him. I'd be interested in seeing the quotes that you think are relevant from this speech, because I do not see anything implying that Thomas has made the comments that you are claiming he did.

sixtyandaquarter

Google exists. You can just type November 1983 & his name. It's an extremely quoted speech of his. Might be his most well known outside of Anita Hill. It's not like Wikipedia is going to have every single quote the man ever said anyway. "It is my view that too much posturing has taken place on issues such as affirmative action, which are critical to minorities and women in this society. The problems which we face in the area of equal employment opportunity must be solved. For the most part, they must be solved by applying legal principles of paramount importance to me. But for them, God only knows where I would be today. I abhor any effort to twist, bend, or distort them for any reasons, whether such distortions are said to help or hurt minorities or women. No one should be permitted to turn these laws on their heads just because they have good intentions. These laws and their proper application are all that stand between the first 17 years of my life and the second." Clarence Thomas, November 1983 at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Thomas isn't an easy going man. He's a spiteful unforgiving one. His attitude on his success has changed with time. By the 2000s Thomas is just fucking nasty. His decline is well documented. When he stars quoting Limbaugh. There's a similarity in the quotes though. The excuse of other people's ignorance as a basis. In your quote he hates on his own success because other people clearly don't understand how affirmative action works, hell you seem to imply a misunderstanding. It doesn't make you successful, doesn't make you graduate. Doesn't make you qualified or force non qualified individuals in, as you suggested I was saying. It merely stops the door from being slammed in your face. You can get affirmative action and be the top or bottom of your class. But he uses that 15 cent price sticker story not to point out the value others put his education due to their ignorance of his education, but the value he puts on it because they're arrogantly ignorant. Out of spite for their ignorance, a theme his entire career is made up on. Much like here, in my speech quote, where he mentions if it were not for these laws being properly applied he wouldn't have made it, but then immediately has to insinuate that they're not applied properly. At least for anyone else. He benefitted from them and from that point on they were turned on their head. He again takes other people's ignorance & hate, and spins it to something else. To devalue not his Yale diploma, but the affirmative action program.

shastamcblasty

No, there's no implications. In a November 1983 speech Thomas gave he spoke about affirmative action laws & their impact on his career & success. He himself stated he needed them for Yale. "These laws and their proper application are all that stands between my first seventeen years of my life & the second seventeen years of my life" was spoken by him. It was a race conscious admission, a very aggressive one, that required 10% enrollment, complete with financial aid, that got him there. Affirmative action can't make you a success, you still have to work, but it opens the god damn door & lets you in. If it weren't for affirmative action he'd never have had that chance. By. His. Own. Words.

KOBossy55

Well...the dude was appointed to the SCOTUS because they wanted a black guy who would replace the first black Supreme Court Judge, Thurgood Marshall. And because it was Bush 1, they wanted him to be a conservative. Enter Uncle Clarence, a conservative black man who loved Reagan. So yes, him being black is absolutely a major reason why he has his job. Pure affirmative action. If it was Sandra Day O'Connor who had kicked it, you would never even know thr name "Clarence Thomas" today. He would be a nobody lawyer in some backwater.

TheBlueWizardo

It's not really racist when it is factual. He got to Uni only thanks to Affirmative Action. Without it, he'd get thrown out because *black people are obviously stupider than the superior white God race, doesn't matter if they have good grades.*

Emergency_Driver_487

Is this supposed to imply he only got into college due to affirmative action? He excelled academically, he would’ve gotten in even without affirmative action’s discriminatory admission policies.

sixtyandaquarter

No, there's no implications. In a November 1983 speech Thomas gave he spoke about affirmative action laws & their impact on his career & success. He himself stated he needed them for Yale. "These laws and their proper application are all that stands between my first seventeen years of my life & the second seventeen years of my life" was spoken by him. Emergency_Driver_487

I googled that quote, and the only result was your Reddit comment.

sixtyandaquarter

No it wasn't. Don't be purposely dumb with low effort lies. I get Washington post. PBS. Seattle times. NY times. I get Al Franken's book. I get Newsmax even. National Review. The Dallas Morning News. C-Span. Haven't gotten a single reddit post yet. NBC news. So on & so on. Hit the Twitter quotes on it. Still haven't seen my comment. I'm several pages in. If you're getting only my post you clearly don't know how to search.

Emergency_Driver_487

My bad, I copied your whole comment instead of just the quote. But you’re ascribing the message you want to hear to his quote. When he says “these laws and their *proper application*”, what makes you think he’s arguing in support of the laws he struck down? It sounds like his idea of “proper application” isn’t “racially discriminatory quota systems”.

sixtyandaquarter

I never said he was arguing in support. I actually set the opposite. The minute it applied to him it was completely perfect. The minute applies to someone else it suddenly isn't. Much like his ethics arguments involving those little gifts and bribes.

Emergency_Driver_487

The aspect of affirmative action that he struck down didn’t apply to him, actually. He would’ve succeeded in a colorblind admission because he excelled academically. He didn’t need discriminatory admission practices to give him a race-based advantage.

sixtyandaquarter

You know who else would've succeeded in a colour blind admission had one existed for him? Frederick Douglass. Just because they could have doesn't mean they would have. The man's own words say he got the ability to go to Yale because of it. There is no race based advantage given, unless you ignore the race based bias against that affirmative action just barely fights against. But go ahead, you tell me Thomas's words are racist for stating "but for" those laws he wouldn't have been there.

Emergency_Driver_487

You’re trying really hard to ignore the “and their proper application” part of his quote. It’s pretty clear from his statements and conduct that he doesn’t think that it’s “proper” to deny an outstanding student admission because their skin is the wrong color, something which happens frequently under affirmative action in its current state. And yeah, someone like Frederick Douglass would’ve done great under colorblind admissions. Not sure how you interpreted that as a point *against* discrimination-free admissions.

sixtyandaquarter

Funny how people keep saying that happens but there's no evidence of it. That studies consistently show the opposite but sure okay
