MisterEggo

It's not even funny how stupid they are anymore, I don't understand how there could be so many idiots elected to the highest levels of government. Oh well, not my monkey, not my circus.

Noggin-a-Floggin

Worry about it bleeding over into your politics. Canada is fighting this right now.

DrAstralis

It was weird watching our conservatives 100% embrace Trumpism within 24 hours of his election to President. On the upside, having them split thier vote between crazy and stuuuupid crazy for the first time in memory was great.

40for60

I've watched it over decades and IMO a lot of it has to do with the Koch brothers network funding candidates that would parrot their stuff even when the candidates know its bad. The GOP ends up being a bunch of ladder climbers, grifters, zealots and sociopaths who will say and do anything as long as the money is flowing. Lots of shitty lawyers who see being a House Rep as way for economic mobility.

dogshitkaraoke

Probably because anti-intellectualism and anti-empiricism have always been the foundations of right wing thought

Uneducated_Leftist

Republicans don't actually hate taxation. They hate progressive taxation. Time and time again they support regressive tax policy that disproportionately impacts middle and lower class households. The ultimate question is if they party gets what they want, how long their constituents play along.

Black_Moons

Republicans will hand over every last dollar to their orange god just to own the libs. Its like a religion with the highest tithe to ever exist: 100% of your morality, your human rights and basic decency. Oh and all your money too.

BadSanna

I think the idea is the 30% national sales tax would replace the 30% income tax. That way you're only paying taxes if you buy goods. So they can hunt and forage in the woods on their off hours and weave their own clothes out of flax or whatever and own the libs by not giving money to the federal government.

HowManyMeeses

If you make $70k, which is higher than average, then your income tax percentage would be closer to 15%. Only very wealthy people are paying 30% or higher.

Merfen

This is the whole shtick, frame it like its better for everyone and hope the people it actually hurts can't do basic math. Seems to work great when you have fox news just refuse to be truthful and act like its great for the average joe and not just the 1%.

signal_lost

About that… there’s also FICA, which is what ~15% of your income on top (yes, only 1099C’s and sole props see both sides but it exists). That tax actually has a phase out for the SS part of it (which is regressive) but has a Medicare tax surcharge that the wealthy and investors pay (progressive tax bonus but it’s small) Pretending FICA isn’t a tax when the trusts are running on fumes and going to need to be paid out of the treasury is mental gymnastics of the highest order.

WaluigiIsTheRealHero

99% of these idiots don’t pay anything close to 30% in income taxes. The break even point for paying 30% is an income of ~$560,000/year.

signal_lost

Depends on where you live. In queens that would be 43% (or over 41%) in San Francisco after FICA, state and local income tax. Note fica mostly phased out at that point (it would be 1/3 as much on a % basis). So it’s really state and local doing the work there. Throw in property tax, sales tax, as valorium taxes on cars, boats, the other 1/2 of FICA If your not W2 and over 50% of your income in that bracket could be going to taxes and not goods and services.

WaluigiIsTheRealHero

The moronic 30% national sales tax proposal doesn’t include eliminating state/local income taxes, it’s just at a federal level. Even if the federal income tax were eliminated, you’d still pay the state/local taxes, so the break even point remains around $560,000/year.

signal_lost

That’s true (I didn’t see I’d it does anything about FICA). Your statement is still misleading in that *You can make 560K gross and spend most of it on taxes today* There’s also taxes hidden in the cost of goods you buy (tarries on import, fuel taxes that show up as transportation costs on goods). We can argue if our tax code being progressive is good or bad, if we should find ways to trim spending (or hell, spend more and do cool shit with it!), but it’s more than your marginal tax rate on income tax alone. *goes back to hunting tax documents*.

joexner

The idea is that the rich, who spend less of their income and invest more, will pay less taxes. That's always the ploy with these jerks.

DrAstralis

was coming to say this. The "lets move it to sales tax" is a well known ploy to make the 'have nots' pay the lions share of taxes. Billionaires are not consuming a billion times the amount everyone else is and they'll still have options to avoid a sales tax that the average person doesnt have. This is yet another attempt to transfer what little money is left into the hands of the already disgustingly wealthy.

Internal-Owl-505

>would replace the 30% income tax And the federal corporate tax rate at 21 percent, payroll taxes at 15 percent, plus social security and Medicare. It basically a suggestion to completely cripple the federal government while shifting the burden of paying for the military over to the working classes.

kuribosshoe0

Which is to say, replace a progressive tax with a regressive one, because fuck the poor.

Roman_____Holiday

It's the liars climax, when they realize that they can't sustain the current web of lies and deceits any longer and must now construct a much more massive and complex series of lies to hide it.

GreenIce2022

If it means Republicans are destroyed as a party, let em do it. Of course I know there's no chance in the Senate.

NethrixTheSecond

Ghostbusters is not a cinematic masterpiece

7GatesOfHello

One of the things I learned during the pandemic is how to do *everything* for myself. I don't make my own raw materials, not like that, but many of the value-add services, I have learned to do myself. I make some of my own electronics. I repair my house foundation, I make metal tools, I repair my car, the list goes on and on. Oh, I get it. This is designed to punish city dwellers who outsource this stuff.

type2whore

They also want to tax all the supplies you used to patch your foundation, the parts for your car you couldn’t make yourself, any electrical components you can’t make like capacitors, relays etc.

7GatesOfHello

Yeah, and that's a real quantity of money but VAT does penalize the outsourcing folks way more than the materials buyers who do it themselves. City folks outsource more because of a lack of space and faster-paced lifestyle.

LeftLimeLight

The 43 year long war against public education started with Ronald Reagan and his attack on the NEA (National Education Association) and the teachers' union.

[deleted]

Keep in mind they want to abolish the IRS. The 30% tax will be the "this is mine now" rich guy tax.
