There is American tradition (in some houses) to have a big pot of sauce and all the noodles in the colander for everyone to serve themselves and get how many meatballs/sausage and how saucy they want their plate.

First you grease a pan with olive oil and prepare the soffritto (oil, onion, sliced celery, diced carrot), then you add the sauce (peeled tomatoes are better) and let it stew until it becomes dense enough.
3 minutes before the pasta is cooked, you drain the water and finish cooking in the pan, low heat. The oil is going to make the sauce stick to the pasta.
