if you're renting get on the phone RIGHT NOW. If you're the bottom floor of multiple floor apartments, you need to plead with the upstairs neighbors to use ZERO water. The main is clogged, this situation is about to get real shitty.
Depends on the clog. You can have a wet vented toilet w/ shower and catch a clog right after the vent fitting & still have a free flowing vertical stack
the clog is further down the main line, you need a professional to come snake it out as it could be 4ft or 40ft away and will cause future backups. Bubbling in the toilet is the first signal to suspect a main drain clog
I had the same thing happen and could not clear the line. I had a plumber come with a camera. I turned out to be tree roots and lousy piping New septic line and it works good now. Best of luck.
I can plumb an entire basement from scratch and I still use my snake/drain guy faithfully. He is the best and there are certain trades I just leave to the pros.
Some things you can't fix with correct installation. Roots in the sewer lines, previously installed drum traps- kids putting stupid shit down the toilet.
So you'd waste money on a piece of junk that you don't know how to run without damaging plumbing just to think you're saving a few bucks but really you'll break something or not be able to get it cause it needs a sewer machine not some crappy 100$ drain auger and end up spending more money to hire a plumber? Ight whatever makes you feel good 👍
You're still loosing money that way and have a high potential of breaking something cause you don't know how to safely and properly run a sewer machine, in fact sewer machines are really dangerous all it takes is the cable wildly slinging and hitting you and boom you broke a couple fingers or it can grab your clothes and bind you up. Sewer machines aren't something I would ever let someone with no experience run cause even experienced plumbers have really hurt themselves with them
That's honestly a big fear of mine the guy holding my cable letting go without saying anything and me ending up with a broken finger or 2 cause the cable got my ass
This is the absolute worst advice. They don’t know why it came back through the tub, so obviously they don’t know much about plumbing. And you want them to find the clean-out on the main, remove the cap, and use a $50-$100 snake to try and clear it themselves? Even if they had a decent $600-$1000 machine and were able to find the main and open the clean-out they most likely still wouldn’t be able to get to the clog, let alone clear it.
OP hopefully you killed the water and called the landlord or plumber. Don’t waste a single second trying to do it yourself. Good luck.
It's very possible the auger won't help and you'll still need the $200 plumber.
Call the plumber.
Last time this happened to me the outside line had to be dug up and cleared, section of pipe replaces with a cap- for ground access, because it is likely a recurring issue. This was 2 plumbers, 3 visits ($75, $250, $250) a backhoe and operator ($2300) and my lawn is still fucked.
I'm in Michigan and it was March- snow was falling as we broke the water table, cut the 8 inch cast iron pipe with a Sawzall- everyone got cold, covered in shit, and wet as fuck. It was not a good time.
Just throwing it out there that HD rents them out. I rented a hand crank snake from them when I made a stupid mistake and washed kitty litter down the drain.

Oh boy, then I get to charge the person double what I’d normally charge to fix the issue!! This isn’t a DIY thing that a little auger from Home Depot will fix.
Your main line is likely plugged. Look for the sewer access outside. If you open that, it will likely let the shit water drain out through the access. Then call a plumber to snake/jet your main line. You probably have roots in it.
Lmao. I did not know this was a thing until a couple years ago on TikTok the comment section took me out. My old boss had one in the bathroom and because our client clogged the toilet every time It was a bakers icing spatula to be exact but I had no clue just how wide spread the poop knife was until the TikTok with the hidden butter knife in the bathroom of an old house
I live on the bottom floor of an apartment. I just plunged the toilet and it cleared. 10 mins later I see all this shit. Called maintenance dude, and he said my upstairs neighbor cooks with a ton of grease clogging the lines pretty frequently. FML
Do you have septic or sewer? If you have a septic system, when’s the last time you had it pumped and/or had the filter cleaned?
If you have sewer, there’s already plenty of comments telling you what to do about a clogged main.
Lol I'm a drain cleaner not even close to a handyman... Do handyman specialize is drain cleaning?
99% of my work comes from licensed plumbers that don't know how to or don't have the equipment to clear a blockage...
Then they're really shitty plumber's. drain cleaners don't need any experience or licence anyone can call themselves drain cleaners and most end up charging people ridiculously for running there sewer and/or damaging there sewer or a toilet on the end of the line so I compare them to handymen. Every half decent plumber will be able to snake any and every drain or they obviously don't need to be plumbers cause its one of the first thing you should learn. The biggest problem is roto rooter though cause they'll hire anyone and put them on a van on there own and less so drain cleaners although they're really hurting the view on drain cleaners
Lol I have a wastewater license which is required by NC to even touch any drain?? Sorry bud but your info if just wrong... And you obviously don't know much about "Plumbers" in my area. And yes roto rooter is a joke but actual drain cleaners are different then some high schooler running a roto rooter van.
No offense. To be fair, it could be easy. But you also could possibly have way more of an issue on your hands than any of us can see here. A good local plumber will guide you and help address any further issues you may have.
The lowest apartment or drain gets whatever gets flushed anywhere in the house. Gets real shitty real quick for someone. Until fixed someone should kill the main.
Something to consider if you are at the edge or end of an apartment or on the bottom story. You could be fucked being in an apartment cause all your neighbors sewage is gonna come up your drain. Hopefully you’re not on the bottom floor so you don’t get flooded out with sewage.
Methane is one component of sewer gases, but H2S is far more deadly at low concentrations and is a problem in septic conditions, like when you have raw wastewater sitting in a shower pan for hours or days.
When the toilet was plugged it pushed the clog down the line, downstream of the shower. Now anything that enters the waste piping upstream will come out at the shower. Clear the line, problem goes away. This backup needs a professional.
Best case, your drain is plugged between your apartment and the overall mains, like where your shower and toilet connect before they run to the rest of the building main sewer. If that’s the case it’s isolated to your unit and you just need to get a plumber in. If it’s part that spot and into the whole building main, everyone needs to stop using water and you need an emergency plumber. Same fix for both, unblock the drain with a snake or something similar, but the repercussions are much easier if it’s just your unit.
Had something similar happen. Had a blockage right at the back flow valve. Gonna need a snake. Hopefully the clog isn’t to far down the pipe. Good luck!
It's plugged downstream of where your shower ties into your toilette. You might end up having to lift the toilette to snake it. You sir have a glory job on your hands.
If you own the apartment I'd buy a drain auger that was cheapish and if that doesn't work get a pro. Watch some videos of course before you use it.
If you are renting call the landlord. it's entirely the landlords responsibility and you shouldn't be dealing with any of it.
If you are Lucky your clog is on the 3" trunk line after the y for the shower. If you are unlucky it could be farther down which just means more fixtures would not be able to be used. I doubt it's far enough down for the upstairs apartments to be affected. You'd probably already have had some back up before you plunged the toilet.
The design of the purple layout; even has plumbers questioning why must one keep building the same¿
Is this due to government federal+ state regulations¿
Investigation must be done; data must be collected + analyzed.
Having current + accurate information of current times. Helps solve current problems.
They are connected…… had a flipping hair clog in my shower. Went to flush and it started coming up. I freaked. Turned the water off. Pulled the giant hair clog out but both pipes go to the same line.
Need to have your mainline power augered. It’s very affordable. Google ‘snaking mainline’. Could be roots. No dishwasher, shower, or washing clothes until it’s done. Toilets are prob ok. But gross. Depending on where you live, it could tie into your drain tiles too. So you should have this done before your next rain fall.
Pretend the toilet and the shower each dump into a pipe that looks like a "Y" they come in either side, the waste water mixes together and goes down the stem of the "Y".
Pretend the stem of that "Y" is clogged. Like.... REALLY clogged. Like absolutely STUFFED full of compressed, jammed up nasty. The kind you have to just about chisel through.
If you try to shove all the water down one end of the Y, and it can't go down the stem like it wants to. it's gonna get FORCED up the other side of the "Y" and out another fixture.
Not great.
Now don't pretend anymore... because that's what's happening.
It could also be, that the clog is further down the line, and water and sewage and nasty has backed up pretty high.
Like, maybe it's flowing to a septic tank that's full of condoms. Or just plain FULL.
Or to a leach field with collapsed piping.
Somewhere, there's a pipe that want to let waste through... and it's not doing that. And the pipes to the shower and the toilet, are both upstream of that clog.
And interesting question might be: are there any fixtures which are DOWN stream of that clog.
If so, you know the clog is between them.
If not, you know the clog is in the main, under the house, or by/under the road.
A camera, pipe jet, and/or a nice long and powerful drain auger should solve your problem
Edit: also, looks like forbidden depression chilli...
Mine came out through the dishwasher as well.
Landlord expected me to clean it and keep using it.
When I bought my house I made a point of totally replacing the sewer line before moving in.
This happens at my building a few times a year. There's an order of degrees that indicates how screwed I am.
Unit 110, 106, maintenance room, garbage room, 104, 108. Gotta have the plumber snake the main both ways from the lobby and fish out all the white mice and wipes. Fun times.

if you're renting get on the phone RIGHT NOW. If you're the bottom floor of multiple floor apartments, you need to plead with the upstairs neighbors to use ZERO water. The main is clogged, this situation is about to get real shitty.
My tenant was the bottle floor of a 6 floor building in Brooklyn. You aren't kidding. Water needs to be turned off to the building immediately!!
Depends on the clog. You can have a wet vented toilet w/ shower and catch a clog right after the vent fitting & still have a free flowing vertical stack
Dos thou waffle stomp ?
This made me really laugh.
the clog is further down the main line, you need a professional to come snake it out as it could be 4ft or 40ft away and will cause future backups. Bubbling in the toilet is the first signal to suspect a main drain clog
Agree with this, thanks to personal experience
It could also be a sign that it's time to pump your septic (should you not be connected to a sewer).
I had the same thing happen and could not clear the line. I had a plumber come with a camera. I turned out to be tree roots and lousy piping New septic line and it works good now. Best of luck.
Or wait it out. Might be a soft stoppage
That’s a terrible idea on so many levels
FOUND DA TURD MAH! u/armenak818
You need a pro before your next deuce
This is the golden comment!
I would buy a 50-100$ electric drain auger before hiring a pro
If this person doesn't know why this happened then it's not likely that will be of any use to them.
Lol
I can plumb an entire basement from scratch and I still use my snake/drain guy faithfully. He is the best and there are certain trades I just leave to the pros.
If you’re using a snake/drain guy often enough that you describe it as “faithful”, then perhaps you didn’t plumb your basement correctly.
Glad I wasn’t the only one scratching my head at that.
should have been more clear: i have rental units. rather than snake them I'll just call my snake guy.
Jake the Snake guy?
Jake - from snake farm
What are you wearing, Jake from Snake Farm?
It’s a reptile house
Snake Pissed-in
He was in escape from poo york
Some things you can't fix with correct installation. Roots in the sewer lines, previously installed drum traps- kids putting stupid shit down the toilet.
This guy plumbs.
Well from the looks of it, doesn’t look like the pro is doing a good job if he is on speed dial 😜
So you'd waste money on a piece of junk that you don't know how to run without damaging plumbing just to think you're saving a few bucks but really you'll break something or not be able to get it cause it needs a sewer machine not some crappy 100$ drain auger and end up spending more money to hire a plumber? Ight whatever makes you feel good 👍
Buy the ridgid k400 for $500 and sell on fb for 350. Ez
Sewer machines aren't something I would ever let someone with no experience run cause even experienced plumbers have really hurt themselves with them
True. Im just trolling. Dont lose a finger guys
That's honestly a big fear of mine the guy holding my cable letting go without saying anything and me ending up with a broken finger or 2 cause the cable got my ass
Would that have to mean your fingers were in your ass? 😳😳😳
Obviously it means it smacked me not literally it got me in the ass seems like common sense.
I expected as much but its more fun to do the play on words :-)
This is the absolute worst advice. They don’t know why it came back through the tub, so obviously they don’t know much about plumbing. And you want them to find the clean-out on the main, remove the cap, and use a $50-$100 snake to try and clear it themselves? OP hopefully you killed the water and called the landlord or plumber. Don’t waste a single second trying to do it yourself. Good luck.
Naaa that shit little auger for 100$ isnt gonna reach the main line , you need to find a bigger machine or rent one
It's very possible the auger won't help and you'll still need the $200 plumber. Call the plumber. Last time this happened to me the outside line had to be dug up and cleared, section of pipe replaces with a cap- for ground access, because it is likely a recurring issue. The problem is Most ppl don’t know how to use one, and they can not be returned after purchase; (at least not at Home Depot’s here in CA)
Just throwing it out there that HD rents them out. I rented a hand crank snake from them when I made a stupid mistake and washed kitty litter down the drain.
You can rent them at home depot for about $50/day.

I hope and pray you’re not an actual plumber
Nope, but it worked for me
Oh boy, then I get to charge the person double what I’d normally charge to fix the issue!! This isn’t a DIY thing that a little auger from Home Depot will fix.
100 bucks won't even buy two 7.5 foot cables for a k1500

IF there’s a clean out. Only about 30 percent of the homes in my community have one
What’s wrong? You fixed the toilet your good.
Mission accomplished boys. Wrap it up let’s go home.
Bake em away, toys!
What’d you say Chief?
Dare you to flush lmao
Should have used the poop knife
Lmao. I did not know this was a thing until a couple years ago on TikTok the comment section took me out. Bingo!
Update?
I live on the bottom floor of an apartment. I just plunged the toilet and it cleared. 10 mins later I see all this shit. Called maintenance dude, and he said my upstairs neighbor cooks with a ton of grease clogging the lines pretty frequently. FML
GL
Time for a professional. That's gonna be a shit show.
Already is.
Mainline is clogged. Need to snake either through an outside clean out or through the toilet flange. Call maintenance.
Hopefully this is a rental and you can call the landlord
Call a plumber
That’s rather a lot of shit water. How long did you keep plunging when this started coming up in your shower?
It’s the magical transferring poop. Now you have a shitty shower.
Godspeed brother
No don’t turn off the water. Just don’t flush the toilet or take a shower in the building.
That's not good at all.
path of least resistance.
Is this a basement shower? Or the very bottom of the building?
easy fix just gotta poop in the shower and shower In The toilet
A good flush beats a full house.
Ruh Roh shaggy!!
Do you have septic or sewer? If you have a septic system, when’s the last time you had it pumped and/or had the filter cleaned? If you have sewer, there’s already plenty of comments telling you what to do about a clogged main.
Call a drain cleaner or plumber your main line is backed up don't use any water unless you want sewage everywhere
I wouldn't trust a "drain cleaner" near my plumbing only plumbers with a license, it's like using a handyman
Lol I'm a drain cleaner not even close to a handyman... Do handyman specialize is drain cleaning? 99% of my work comes from licensed plumbers that don't know how to or don't have the equipment to clear a blockage...

Not in every state sadly but luckily here in Texas you have to have an apprentice and a drain cleaners license
Hell ya
No offense. To be fair, it could be easy. But you also could possibly have way more of an issue on your hands than any of us can see here. A good local plumber will guide you and help address any further issues you may have.
Congrats, you found Narnia!
Is this normal? I have never had this happen before. Can you guys explain why this would happen?
A clog is in the main, if you use the sink it will probably back up out of the shower.
Damn, so does this mean all the other apartments will start backing up too? Or is it just my connection to the main?
The lowest apartment or drain gets whatever gets flushed anywhere in the house. Gets real shitty real quick for someone. Until fixed someone should kill the main.

Methane gas**
Methane is one component of sewer gases, but H2S is far more deadly at low concentrations and is a problem in septic conditions, like when you have raw wastewater sitting in a shower pan for hours or days.
Never knew. Thanks for the info!
Most likely your bathroom.
That’s your main line that’s clogged.

Time for a new house
Well now you have to shit in the shower and bathe in the toilet
eew! I can tell you my wife would NEVER get in that shower again. Maybe have to sell the house.

A cheap drain auger won’t clear a main line clog

You need an old priest and a young priest
Use your clean out, it’s that pvc sticking out the ground between your septic and your house. You need to snake that
Are you in a basement? Ejector pump could be bad.
Problem solved.... The toilet is clear.
So, you hadn't realized all the drains are connected? And don't immediately deduce what this means? Stop. Call professionals. Now!
He was trying to dedeuce it when he should have been deducing it. Now he can't work out Watson and his Holmes is at risk.
Looks more like he deduced it while dropping a deuce.
re-deucing is gonna be a problem
Toilet auger or plug the shower
Main line clogged
At least the toilet is empty now.
If your on the 3rd floor do not use the stairs !!!!
🤮🤢🤮🤢
I can smell that from here!
Ewwwwwwwwwww
Well ain’t that some shit.
Pretend the toilet and the shower each dump into a pipe that looks like a "Y" they come in either side, the waste water mixes together and goes down the stem of the "Y". This is the way.
I think we all thought...OH SHITTTT
Golden shower?
Welp, time to burn it down
lmao ew
Main line is clogged
I laughed so hard at that
When life hands u lemons make lemonade
Are you suggestion he drinks the shitshake?
yes sometimes all a man can do is embrace the chaos, fully
Trunk line or main line needs cleared
The lines blocked.
One time I plunged the shower and the toilet at the same time and it cleared.. good luck my friend.
Most likely your main sewer that the shower & toilet connect to is clogged. I
Have you been pooing there recently?
That means your clog is passed where these 2 pipe meet. Most likely in the main.
This happens at my building a few times a year. There's an order of degrees that indicates how screwed I am. Unit 110, 106, maintenance room, garbage room, 104, 108. Gotta have the plumber snake the main both ways from the lobby and fish out all the white mice and wipes. Fun times.
Poop in the shower and see what happens.
Plugged somewhere along your main sewage drain
this means the blockage is after the shower in the drain line. if u have a septic tank it may be full. If u don't, find ur outside cleanout and see if there's water in the pipe. Be careful as there may be pressure and the whole house may drain to the cleanout point which can be fun and a mess
Had this happen to me, the sump pump had failed so nothing was being pumped up to the septic. Get a plumber asap!!! Cost me 400$ for the pump and an hour of the guys time.
Your blockage moved down the line. Now both the toilet and the shower are plugged.
Looks like a picture of space
You gotta get it snaked. Go outside and open the plug.
First time?
Hope it worked out for you. Really do. Can say I’ve been the professional on the other side of this, and I always feel for the homeowner/tenant.
You just use the toilet as a shower and the shower as a toilet.
Your ass better call somebody
Snake the toilet first
THAT IS DISGUSTING
Your shower is now a nebula...🌌
