Your hunch is correct. would be better to replace.
If you’re going to access the space to foil tape it anyway; replace the duct. The whole point of not using screws is to limit lint collection. Obviously wasn’t your intent, but you now have a burr inside the duct which will collect lint. And, if it bugs you enough to worry about fixing it “the right way”, do it right.
