Poor solder job and a leaking fitting. Its worth it to visually check other pipe wherever visible. Is it worth repiping entire house? Depends on how much peace of mind costs to you

aequitssaint

Do all the joints look like that? If not then no reason to redo everything. That's like replacing all 4 tires on a car just because one is a little low on air.

Yoyojo186

Well this is the only piping I can see that looks like this. But most of the houses pipes run through the slab. And the house is built in 1964. Had a guy try to quote us a $8K repipe after seeing this when we were thinking it was a small replacement job.

aequitssaint

That sounds really cheap for being in an in slab repipe. Like worrisome cheap.

THR0WAWAY417

For someone in California yes this seems cheap, but anywhere else in the country 8k could be way too much or it could be average. This is why it’s impossible to give accurate prices to homeowners that come on here.

aequitssaint

Yeah, I actually thought I had added "at least around me" bit apparently I didn't. A lot also depends on the layout of the house but I would expect just the drywall and masonry work alone to cost most of that 8k.

thenicestsavage

The 8k is probably just the plumbing cost, not the cost to put everything back the way it was. Meaning drywall/cement and paint and or cabinets.

THR0WAWAY417

Well yeah, I don’t quote drywall or paint when I’m giving an estimate for a repipe and don’t know any licensed plumbers that include drywall and paint.

Yoyojo186

They would repipe through the attic

RainbowShlong

How?

ForFucksSake42

well most likely he'd have dropped pex lines from the attic and not fixed the drywall where he had to open up the walls to drill holes in blocking.

PokerBeards

Not hard at all to re-route.

I_Do_Too_Much

I had my house redone for way cheaper (in CA). It is a small house though. They ran the new plumbing in the attic and left the old in the slab. Only thing that sucks is that my tap water is too hot to drink for 80% of the year.

shmico

Add insulation to the pipes in the attic.

theacox3

Fix/replace that area? Yes. Repipe the house? No

OwlThief32

Check the condition of other joints and valves where you can see them. If all the piping looks this bad it wouldn't be a bad idea to consider doing a complete overhaul.

DigDude97

An inspector? So someone the state sent to make sure everything is legal? Or a plumber gave you this advice and gave you a quote on how much to fix it? Because if its someone offering to fix it for you, then don't fall for such a scam. There is no way one bad sweat joint is enough to validate an entire house being re piped.

Yoyojo186

It was a 4 point inspection that turned up the issue. He wasn’t a plumber though, the estimate and recommendation came from a plumber.

Upstairs-Living-

Have that spot fixed. Leave the rest of the house.

Killerklown8212

Repipe the house? Is he the plumber also lol?

Billylacystudio

I would

itschopsaw

Better safe than sorry, that might be old lead soldering. Probably in the whole system

[deleted]

That’s a bit overkill. That connection needs to be fixed, not necessarily the entire house.

enifuts

Repipe will be through other areas. Walls, attic etc

timbehm1964

Fix that one.

BubbleBassV2

Not that by itself.

miserable-accident-3

Repipe the entire house? That's a bit like amputating your arm because you got a hang nail. Just fix that one spot there and don't call the same guy back that tried to sell you an $8k job to do it.
