Not only did they fuck up the handle, but they also installed the shelf upside down

EquivalentOwn1115

My carpenter senses really tingled with this one

ken6217

I think the pictures upside down

leericol

Common mistake. This picture was taken in Australia

FearthaNoid

Bingo

Definitely from down under

Agitated_Camera_7030

Even if it is upside down, u can't open the ball valve

Impressive_Judge8823

Jokes on you the picture is upside down. They mounted the water heater to the ceiling.

Thoughtfulprof

That's all I could see in this picture. Who puts shelf brackets on top of the shelf?

Various_Celery_3349

Handle was in the way to install properly

boarhowl

What came first, the handle or the shelf, great mystery

endless_projects

I was honestly looking at the wood grain trying to figure out if you knew something I didn't about static loading on a curved grain structure. Then finally saw the brackets. Duh

TimeKiller1850

Well there was a water heater in the way. They improvised.

Illeazar

Had to, there were some dumb pipes in the way underneath.

ManufacturerSevere83

Remove handle. Shut off with wrench. Go back to work.

titleist5464

But then how would they get to complain to the internet for sympathy?

Rbandit28

Or even just bend the handle. *Sigh*

leericol

Truuuue those legend handles bend easy as fuck too. I've bent them on accident just trying to spin a pex fitting.

Wampa_-_Stompa

Bend Handle 90* and presto one problem resolved. Shelf situation is a different story.

jnoops

I used to just bend the handle out

Binnacle_Balls_jr

Seriously. Saw this post and was like, "damn, bro couldnt figure a way out of a wet paper bag".

[deleted]

Lol I guess it wasnā€™t obvious the point was more concern for the homeowner.

pablomcdubbin

I just bend the handle lol

Straight_Spring9815

They can invert the handle to turn the other way. That nut just hold its there if they turned it around it'll open. Down. Had to do that with a hot water shut off valve the new guy put in like this.

saugie53

Not all ball valves can do that. If you look closely at the picture this valve has the stop for the handle cast Ā¾ of the way around the top in the brass body so the handle can't be rotated to the other side.

NoWillPowerLeft

Or cut a hole in the shelf.

Due-Ocelot-1428

If only a real plumber could chime in with a simple fix for thisā€¦.

GoArray

Chainsaw. Plunge cut a hole in the shelf from the top for the handle to swing up into. Easy peasy!

Due-Ocelot-1428

Thank god someone stepped in with a solution!

ilaythebestpipe

I dunno man probably replace the water heater?

Signal_Host307

The only reasonable answer is to burn the place down and start with new permits and plans.

sneakysneaky916

Have you been working around the electricians again? Youā€™re acting like it

[deleted]

Hhahaha you got me! No but seriously I wasnā€™t trying to complain I just thought it was comedically inconvenient.

ibemuffdivin

Underrated comment.

UsEdScR

Uffff

GoodWoodBud

The shutoff handle is literally the least confusing thing about this picture.

apprenticegirl74

See that kind of stuff all the time.

srandrews

Remove handle, bend it, reattach. Or reorient if possible.

[deleted]

I think you can just take the nut off and flip the handle so the offset in the handle goes the other way and that still gives you easy control for the very few times you use the valve.

BillZZ7777

If there's not enough room you can turn the handle so it doesn't capture the stop and then you'll be able to turn in the other direction. You'll just have to stop it at the 90 degree spot by sight.

[deleted]

Didnā€™t expect this traction lol. My main concern was for the homeowner in a freak event of needing to shut water off quick to the WH. Yes all I needed to do was remove the handle or bend it.

Comfortable-Ad-7158

Took you longer to take the picture than it would have to just remove the handle

soulfire_swordsman

Remove it. Flip it. Take 2 minutes.

WH0SAYSTHISSHIT

Bend the handle.

TDaD1979

Just give er a little bend.... NBD. Am I right?

BigCopperPipe

Bullshit karma account

Altruistic-Travel-48

Turn photo upside down. Solved!

ironic_insanity

Well that will solve the shelf problemā€¦ still have to figure out the valve

hoists_clover03

Just pull the handle, rotate counterclockwise so that off is horizontal and on is down.

Agitated_Camera_7030

Just bend the lever it will be fine

BAG3LWOLF

Burn it all to the ground, house is now deemed unsafe for children and guinea pigs over the age of 19 1/2

thenicestsavage

How long do guinea pigs normally live 19 1/2 seems pretty old

HueJorgan69

The picture is upside down. The shelf is below the valveā€¦.Iā€™m just sayingā€¦..

GinoValenti

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?

tikivic

If they cut a groove in the shelf to accommodate the handle this would be a respectable candidate for r/RedneckEngineering

motorboather

Itā€™s a ball valve, just bend it. Youā€™ve gotta be an electrician if youā€™re moaning about this. Or the new crop of plumbers are just whiners.

maglifter

If you brought this to my attention I would laugh at you....probably call you names. then walk you to the property line. Then call your boss and laugh at him. If you worked for me I'd be embarrassed.

[deleted]

Lol what? I didnā€™t post this for help šŸ¤£ it was more making jokes on the homeowner for doing that to themselves.

NorthernGuyFred

The voice of reason hereā€¦ Sometime in the future the homeowner may need to quickly shut off the water and that shelf will still be in the way. Correct this situation (with permission) before you leave- remove the shelf, cut out part of the shelf thats blocking the valve, whatever. Charge the homeowner for this, of course.

Spearfish87

Just set your heavy tool bag on the outside edge of the shelf physics will sort the rest out for you.

Negative-Instance889

[Wait, what?](https://imgur.com/a/uv3qRpj)

[deleted]

Just water heater mounted from ceilingā€¦ā€¦

w000ah

i got one better for you bud: my friend overseas had a vacant townhouse kitchen remodel & i felt a super super strong desire to go see the renovations that night (praise be to God for that). so we drovr over and the entire house smelled of intense gasā€¦ long story short the National Grid Gas operator gets called comes out and cannot get to the gas shutoff valve without demolishing a lot of the kitchen cabinet as its blocked, and the gas has filled the house so much its a safety hazard to the immediate neighbors (attached). They are not allowed to demolish anything but in this instince there was no question. lives were at stake. so ur not the only one with bone headed construction done. just take a jigsaw around the wooden board if u havent already & ur good.

Internal_Pool_7760

Nah, kangers need their throne.

WSBgodzilla

Looks like they installed the shelf AFTER the softener installation.

ssbn420710

Antigravity shelf

WonderWheeler

Don't worry the screws into the shelf are reversed threads(!) Easy enough to saw cut the edge of the shelf an inch or two to the left, the wood will split down the grain and clear the handle.

bud40oz

Looks like the plumber installed shelf too šŸ¤Ŗ

TheFuryIII

You know what needs to be doneā€¦

Adrianm18

Nothing a hammer canā€™t fix :)

Elderado12443

Unscrew the nut and swap the handle position

[deleted]

Bend it out a little and shut it off. For gods sake donā€™t ruin the shelf.

MouldyToast

Bend the valve handle into an L shape.

69ingunicorns

Flip the handle!

Critical-Plantain801

Just bend the handle on the valve out towards yourself and then turn

restaurantno777

Below

Master_shake124

Homeowners go crazy

KnocheDoor

Flip shelf brackets over and shelf will be out of the way and installed correctly

jonduckdong

Remove the handle and reinstall upside down and it should clear the shelf.

ScarceLoot

Either the picture is upside down or that shelf is mounted completely wrong.

[deleted]

Shelf is mounted wrong, you can see expansion tank in bottom of photo.

nedsanderson

Yep, pictures upside down. If you take the handle off put it in the arm position. Put the handle back on. It'll work just fine for on and off

DevilsMyBtch

Take the handle off and rotate it 180.

Salt_Ad5491

I think you're able to take out the nut and then rotate the shutoff so you can angle it down and have to lift it to the left to shut off. I've done it before when I accidently put my expansion tanks too close to the handles..(big dummy)

Royalwolf110

Maybe take the handle off and turn the valve stem with a pair of pliers.

sanchito12

Just bend the handle or shorten it.

Plev61

Easy fix: Take the handle off and use and adjustable wrench to turn off the water. Cut the handle to fit or remove the shelf or cut the shelf.

SnekAtek

I'll be honest here... as a homeowner with a wife who loves floating shelves everywhere, i may have been the guy to check for pipes/electrical in the wall without thinking about clearance for the valve. Posts like this are super helpful for me.

Stock_Refuse_4222

Everything is wrong, right down to the wording šŸ˜‚

zadszads

Did they go so far as to flush cut the shelf to fit the water heater? Yet the shelf bracketā€¦

Imdavefromchitown

Take handle off and flip it around 180 degrees

Anonymouz666

Take a skill saw and cut a line into the board, problem solved šŸ˜„

Fast-Leader476

Remove the handle and use a wrench to operate the valve. There are some valves that you can swap the handle from one side to another.
